The easiest to start with CF-Root. CF-Root roots your phone & installs all the necessary stuff for flashing. You will need Odin & possibly a stock rom for your phone. These can be downloaded from http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Remember always do factory wipe & clear cache before & after flashing. Also make sure to do a back up of your stock rom before flashing anything. Also make a back up of EFS Folder in case your IMEI number is corrupted.
I recommend connecting your phone to your pc after installing CF-Root & copying everything that is on the internal sd card onto your pc.
Instructions in first post. It is long and can be confusing but if you read it carefully it is all quite easy.
Next go here (Team ICSSGS) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1398223
Instructions are in first post of thread. (Below instruction copied from first post of link)
Flashing Instructions
If you are flashing from another rom.
1. Flash ROM(new script should handle coming from any ROM, you also need gingerbread bootloaders)
If you are upgrading from an earlier build.
1. Flash the newest build in CWM.
If you have rebooted and your phone will not go past the kernel screen.
1. Boot into CWM and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
2. Reflash the appropriate kernel.
3. Reboot.
If the flashing procedure didn't quite go to plan, please follow this guide
After this install this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468795
Again all instructions on first post of thread.

http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2012/01/i9000xxjvu-android-236-upgrade-for.html
try that its were i started and ive flashed loads of roms now

Instruction for Flashing new ROM
There are basically 2 methods for flashing a ROM
1. CWM recovery menu mode
2. Download mode.
1. For CWM recovery mode you phone must be rooted with CWM, just put the ROM zip file in sdcard of your phone of your choice. then power off the phone. Then you may want to boot in reovery mode for this use pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume UP + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to recovery mode there just wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache from option then find and select install from sdcard -> chose file zip from sdcard and press power key to selct and start flashing. wait max 5 min and your phone will be booted with new rom of your choice.
2. Boot in to download mode by pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume down + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to download mode now connect your phone with PC and open odin in PC then select ROM file as PDA, PHONE & CSC under propoer boxes then click start - wait max 5 min and you phone will be booted in to new rom.
Thanks

[Q] How to install custom ROM ...?

Hey Frnds...m new to this forum and also new...to Samsung galaxy s i9000 2.3.3 os
Plz can you provide me some help for the installation of custom ROM like ..simply honey 4.o....what are the advantages of that....?
PLz Help me... i want to install simply honey 4.0 But i dont no how to do that..>
Tnx in advance..!!
...then I suggest you read the Simply Honey thread in the Dev forum. It will tell you all the advantages of the ROM and give you instructions about how to install it.
No one can do it for you, you will need to put the time and effort in and educate yourself. Once you have done that, if you still have specific questions then ask them but don't expect anyone to hold your hand and walk you through it step by step. If you don't think you can handle that or don't wish to try, I suggest you stick to the Stock ROM on your phone, you will be happier that way.
However, if you DO make the effort, I guarantee that the knowledge you gain will be invaluable and really improve your Android experience.
Thnx for the rply....n i`ll definitely try to install custom ROM....and i don't want anyone to hold your hand....i just wanted to know the installation process..!!Thnx for the rply and i`ll check the forum..!

Simpliest way is to download CF root for your current rom. For example XXJVQ. Download Odin ( 1.3). Than turn off Kies if running! Open Odin. Put your cell phone in download mode via 3 button combo ( volume down, lock, home) You will see a droid digging and download. Connect the phone with data cable. On the top left you will see PAST. Now hit PDA at Odin. Choose the CF root ( extract it if it is not in tar archieve) than hit start. After the boot open the menu of the phone, and see clockwork mod. Install it! Now select custom rom of your choise. I am on JUWE's with GALAXIAN kernel. Put the rom on your SD card. Than go to phone RECOVERY ( vol up home, lock) You will see the the CLOCKWORK MOD. Choose ot instal instal zip from SD card. Choose the rom and than go After the Flash WIpe data, Wipe Cache and wipe Dalvik Cache. Convert to EXT4 and u are good to go.

That doesn't sound very good, please make this clear for me, did you successfully installed the fresh 2.3.5 rom from point 2?
If you did, try reflashing using "re-partition" enabled with pit file 512
Sounds to me like the internal memory could have some problems.

thanks for your post
after i finish installing the fresh 2.3.5 ROM thru odin & dowload mode with re-partition enabled , it gave the same problem . nothing changed same setting & same apps still exists
i just noticed that if i uninstall the installed apps & delete files and folders in exernal sd
they will come again when i restart the device
wipe the sd-card if u have, go to recovery and wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, download a fresh install JVT or JVS. Put phone in download, then open odin and connect the phone then flash. Hope that helped.
Maybe you should try settings -privacy and disable automatic restore and backup data.

any idea
is there any way to wipe all the ROM from the device before i install the fresh ROM.
and how can i open the recovery mode
You should try to flash custom ROM.. It worked for me when I had issues with installing stock ROM. After I flashed custom and stock after that, all worked well.
Download JVS firmware. Extract JVS pack: there will be four files: CODE, MODEM, CSC and .pit-file. Go to Odin (don't plug phone in yet).
1. Click PIT and select .pit file
2. Click PDA and select file called "CODE"
3. Click PHONE and select file called MODEM
4. Click CSC and select your CSC file.
5. Make sure you have ticked autoreboot and f.reset time and re-partition
6. Put your phone into download mode (Vol.down + menu button + power button)
Plug your phone in and start flashing.
After the phone reboots, go to download mode again (don't plug phone in yet) Download some JVS based Kernel. Don't extract it. Go to odin and click PDA. Select the Kernel you downloaded. Plug your phone in and click start. Wait few secs till it reboots.
Now, download some JVS based custom ROM from developer's section.
Go to recovery by pressing Vol.up + Menu button + power button.
Go to mounts/storages and select "mount usb". then plug your phone in and move the custom ROM you downloaded to root of your internal SD card.
After that click "unmount usb" and go back to first screen.
Then you do factory reset + wipe cache. Go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
After that, go to "install .zip from sd card", then "select .zip from sd card" and select the custom ROM you put there.
Wait till it flash and reboots. Try if you phone works.
I have never had similiar issue as you, put sometimes flashing cusrom ROM helps. Hope in this case too.
Edit: BTW, you could always try to format your whole internal SD card

Volume up + Home Key + Power, if you have CWM recovery you can do this
1. go to factory reset,
2. clear cache
3. Advanced-> clear dalvik cache
wipe battery stats
4.flash stock rom using odin (for best results)
6.flash custom kernel which includes CWM recovery
7.flash custom kernel.
Steps 6 and 7 are optional

thanks guys for your kind effort
First, find stock JVT from here: http://www.sammobile.com/threads/17-Samsung-I9000-Galaxy-S-Firmwares.
I suggest to download JVT firmware, it is the newest. I accidently wrote JVS, instead of JVT.
Speedmod kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044519
- you will find download links at the bottom of the first post, download speedmod-kernel-k15i-t15.tar -version.
Simplicity custom ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203047
When you've done those flashes and if you want stock ROM back, just do these steps again:
Download JVS firmware. Extract JVS pack: there will be four files: CODE, MODEM, CSC and .pit-file. Go to Odin (don't plug phone in yet).
1. Click PIT and select .pit file
2. Click PDA and select file called "CODE"
3. Click PHONE and select file called MODEM
4. Click CSC and select your CSC file.
5. Make sure you have ticked autoreboot and f.reset time and re-partition
6. Put your phone into download mode (Vol.down + menu button + power button)
7. Plug your phone in and start flashing (click start)
Attention! There is two different CSC files in JVT package - I chose bigger one.
"kindly note that the device is not rooted.."
That confirms you have no CWM
I have the very very same problem for the past 2 months here. Been looking for solutions but till now haven't solved it.
Hope something works our for you so that I can get this phone working too :s .. I have been restricted to making only calls and messages.

ok... let's try this: format your internal sd-card then flash a stock ROM using odin like you see here
after you have successfully installed a fresh ROM (using odin) you need to flash a custom kernel that has clockworkmod recovery and gives you root acces like this
Then if you want a custom ROM
Volume up + Home Key + Power, if you have CWM recovery you can do this
1. go to factory reset,
2. clear cache
3. Advanced-> clear dalvik cache
wipe battery stats
4.Flash a custom ROM
5.Enjoy
hope this helps

[Q] How to flash Stock GB ROM on ICS ROM

I have ICS rom installed in my note and wanted to go back stock GB ROM.

Section (5) : Getting back to your old Ginger Bread ROM :
If your having troubles and want to go back to your old GB ROM, this is how you restore. Credits to chasmodo for the instructions.
1. download AbyssNote 3.9 kernel. It's a flashable zip.
2. put this zip on your SD Card before you try to restore your previous system
3. when you want to restore, power off your phone
4. boot into recovery (Volume up + Home + Power)
5. chose 'install zip from SD Card'
6. navigate to your Abyss kernel zip and flash it
7. go back to the Recovery start menu
8. go to advanced/reboot recovery <--- this will reboot the phone directly to recovery
9. you will discover that you now have Hyperdroid Redpill Recovery - it comes with the Abyss kernel - it's pretty much the same thing as CWMR
10. wipe cache, dalvik, do your factory reset
11. start your restore, and it will work.

Make sure u have installed USB Drivers for Note
Make sure your device successfully added to Odin (Yellow block with COM port number)

what ics rom do you use?
if there is not chainfire's kernel inside, just stop to do anything about odin or recovery.

No, flashing back AbyssNote 3.9 + a GB kernel should work (I did a nandroid restore instead),
just DO NOT WIPE ANYTHING while on the "killer kernel", this appears to corrupt the partition table.
can somebody help me, i flashed a stoch firmware over the ics without flashing the obysse kernel, now it juh go to samsung logo and restart there, what can i do now
Try this:
1. pull out your battery
2. wait for 30-40 seconds
3. put it back in
4. go to stock recovery (volume up + home key + power key)
5. wipe everything you can (wipe cache and do a factory reset)
6. reboot system
If this doesn't help, try reflashing your stock rom and do the above after flashing.

Boot loop on Rogers Captivate

I was on the latest Rogers GB firmware before I decided to flash Slim ICS on my phone.
I followed all the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 (skipping the non GB parts, flashing the speedmod kernel using ODIN 1.85, then installing the zip from recovery)
However, the phone softbricked. Fortunately I was able to get it back into download mode by holding down the volume buttons while inserting the batter. Anyways, I decided to flash to another kernel to see if I could get it working again.
Next, I tried to flash Corn_Kernel_UCKK4_v705 and try it again but I was unable to find the zip file in recovery mode. Rebooting doesn't seem to do the trick because it just keeps getting in a boot loop.
I got it into download mode again and flashed KK1_Stock_Kernel but it's still giving me a boot loop whenever I try to boot.
Anyone know how I can fix this?
Alright, well from what I can tell, your kernel isn't compatible with the rom. An ICS rom like Slim ICS requires a kernel that is also ICS-based, but KK4-based kernels are gingerbread. Try flashing Semaphore's latest kernel through ODIN as a .tar file and reflash the rom through that kernel's ICS recovery mode.

Try this..
1. Return back to stock, using the method from the same post you mentioned. (it shows you how towards the bottom)
Note:
a. you can also get the phone into download mode by just holding onto the volume buttons "both" together!! and then plugging in the usb
connector from ur PC/laptop.
b. once in download mode, please see that Odin detects your phone, it will have a yellow highlight with COM (something like that written on it)
c. if not you need to have the right drivers!
2. Download the Slim ICS package again and move it to your phone's internal SD card
3. Dowload gapps and move it to your phone's internal SD card.
4. Download the devil kernel --> here
5. Follow the steps mentioned in the post you followed, after flashing the speedmod kernel which has CWM, go into CWM and flash the ICS ROM.
6. If the phone reboots or gets stuck, remove battery and restart phone!
7. Give it some time to boot. Once it does, reboot into recovery and flash Gapps, reboot(not required but still.. ) flash the kernel you downloaded.
8. Should work fine!
Hope this helps Enjoy.

Sorry for the necro but I just tried this and I was unable to flash anything with CWM after flashing Slim ICS.
I wasn't able to install any zips from my internal or external hard drive for some reason.
I let it reboot afterwards and the same boot loop happened. I tried reflashing it to stock (which was how I fixed it last time) but now it's stuck at the I896 logo screen and it wouldn't boot further.
I can still get it into dl and recovery mode but reflashing doesn't solve this.
Nevermind, I got it to work again using US i897 stock 2.3.3 for some reason :/

[Q] Noob thread - Phone stuck in boot (need help)

Hi All,
My phone locked up this evening for no particular reason. When I rebooted it, I got stuck at a slow flashing Samsung Logo screen.
After scouring threads and web pages for several hours I am stuck!
I can get to the download screen to install a custom ROM and also to to the system recovery menu.
I cleared the cache and also performed a factory reset, but no help.
I have no ROM backups
I suspect I need a clean firmware but don't have a clue where to start or which ROM to install.
Can anyone help me with VERY simple noob friendly instructions for installing a new ROM from scratch? Happy to read through linked content.
Can anyone suggest which new ROM is best for the device? It needs to be clean and stable. I am totally OK with stock ROMs.
Thanks so much in advance guys! Thanks for your patience with a complete noob.
Would need more details..
Such as what version of Android your phone was on?
Was it rooted? Any custom recovery installed?
If a custom recovery is installed boot to it and then do a factory reset and clearing the cache..
Or you can download the Stock Firmware in a Zip File and flash it via Odin.
For Stock Files, search here or google it and download the firmware according to your region.
And for Odin : http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
enter stock recovery(press Volume UP + HOME + Power at the same time for 5 seconds) and a menu will show up...use Volume keys to navigate in that menu..with Power button you select an option...
select Wipe Data/Factory Reset - and scroll down to yes and select it..
Wipe Cache Parition - do the same..
then reboot....
if doesn't work...provide me some info like country where do you live and your mobile operator and i will give you a firmware to flash with odin and how to...
The most important question here would be was it rooted? If you are rooted and have custom recovery installed you can wipe data there and flash any rom of your choice (head over to the development thread).
If your device are not rooted, I afraid you'll have to use odin to flash stock firmware. Head over to sammobile site to download firmware for your country.
