[Q] loading custom recovery woes - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, I officially feel like a jerk right now. I RUU'd my hero. . . lost root. . . spent ridiculous amount of time trying to GET root back. . . and now I'm stuck with GodSpeed Recovery Darchstar Edition. I've tried EVERYTHING to get back to CWM. Well, hopefully not everything. ROM manager free doesn't show up in the market (for whatever reason). I can't get it to side-load the .apk at all (astro doesn't recognize the file at all). I'm S-OFF but making a HERCIMG.zip with the recovery.img enclosed doesn't work. When I try to push it through fastboot, I get FAILED: remote not allow.
hboot:
HERC XC SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-1.47.0000 (HERO20000)
MICROP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-2.42.01.04.27
MAR 1 2010, 16:02:39
I can't help but feel I'm "googling in circles" anymore. I just need a way out of this. . . PLEASE!!!
If I flash CWM 5.0.2.7 in my current recovery, I get:
Install from sdcard. . .
Finding update package. . .
Opening update package. . .
Verifying update package. . .
E:No signature (3 files)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted.

Is there a place to toggle signature verification in that recovery? If so, turn it off and flash cwm.
You could flash a rom then download rom manager and flash cwm recovery
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

Well just sign my recovery zips and you can flash. Also you don't fastboot flash HERCIMG.zip files. You place them on the root of your SD card and boot into the bootloader. They also have to include the android-info.txt inside with the recovery.img as well. Next time you need to reroot just use z4root and manually reboot or OneClick root. Here is an alternative way to flash.
Install Busybox.
Download Terminal Emulator.
Place the recovery.img on the root of your SD card.
Enter these commands into Terminal Emulator:
Code:
$ su
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
私のEVO 3Dから送信される。

A slip of some wording there. I was trying to flash the recovery image in fastboot, and attempting to get hboot to pick-up the HERCIMG.
I tried z4root. . . claims it's rooted, but I can't get rom manager through the market. Side loading doesn't work and neither did the previously mentioned options.
One-click gave me the recovery that I'm currently attempting to replace. I can't load any of the latest ROMs with that recovery, and there is no way to toggle signature verification either. I have no idea which ROM's I can flash.
Searching for clues on the .txt file now. . .
thanks

Use my terminal emulator way to flash a recovery.

That worked dastin. What's funny is that I was able to flash CM6.x last night. Once on the phone, I saw that ROM Manager was installed. I flashed CWM through that application, and went to bed. It stated that the installed recovery was 2.5.0.7!!! This morning, I rebooted into recovery to find GodSpeed still installed!!!
At any rate, your terminal emulator method flashed the 5.2.0.7 image for me. . . and I thank you for that!!! I'm still fairly new to all of this, so what I find on the internet is what I know/learn so far. \
Nandroiding now!!! Flashing zerohero momentarily!!!

Remember that different recoveries put their files in different folders so that Clockwork would not find it if the recovery image isn't in the /clockworkmod/backup folder. Did you reflash 2.5.0.7 in clockworkmod? It will always say that is what your recovery is when you are using a custom recovery.
Also, when using Hboot, make sure that your HERCIMG.zip isn't written as HERCIMG.zip.zip. This won't work and you also need to have an "android-info.txt" in the zip as well if you are making your own, not just the recovery.img (and it can't be named something like GL-recovery.img. I use Dastin's Orange Corps 4.0.1.4 recovery
I have made all of these mistakes in the past. I leave a HERCIMG.zip on my SD card at all times just in case there is a problem and I have some I can flash from recovery. It has saved me a lot of time and trouble when something unexpected has happened.

Well, this all started with my wife losing her 4 month old Evo 4g. . . yay. I had to RUU the hero so she could use it while I found a replacement. I tried a bunch of different ways to get it to activate while on zero hero to no success.
I was trying to flash CWM with GodSpeed. It never did stick. ROM Manager stated it flashed 2.5.0.7 when I was finally able to try that.
What I really don't understand is why I couldn't flash the recovery in fastboot. I kept getting "FAILED: remote not allow" after the flash command. I'm quite sure I was flashing that correctly. Anybody have an answer for that?

HTC DREAM - DRC83 firmware 1.6 : issue with loading custom firmware

Hi all,
I have spent several days trying to fix this problem without any luck.
I have a HTC Dream on development 1.6 firmware (DRC83), I have root access to this phone. So the 'SU' command works in any terminal on the phone. I have the standard SPL.
I am trying to load custom firmware : the new CYANOGEN 4.1.9.9.9
I have used several recovery images and updates to load a SPL that can install the Cyanogen update ontop of the 1.6 development firmware but without any luck.
With root I have placed a HardSPL "update.zip" on the sdcard root and install it via the recovery mode, it aborts the installation after while. I tried several files several times. The Cyanogen update also does not install this way.
I have also tried to downgrade using the DREAIMG.nbh file but the bootload does not seem to work well for me .. it simply goes to the screen with trafic light colours. Again I tried several files several times.
I cannot get fastboot to work either, although I can work with adb, this is how I got root access to the current development firmware.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
you dont need the hardspl for cyans rom
you cant have fastboot without the engineering/hard/haykuro spl
the traffic light colors is the bootloader
why does it abort
its no use telling is it aborted if there isnt any more info
im assuming your running a dev phone 1 firmware on it. you need to upgrade to cyans 1.4 recovery, then flash everything
thanks finally fixed it, no running the customer firmware.
The story was basically that I had root access to my dev phone 1 but the flash_image file did not exist in the /system/bin folder so I had to take it from another firmware package.
I pushed the file into the bin folder on the phone using adb and set up access to flash_image with shell command : chmod 0777 /system/bin/flash_image
next i installed the cm-recovery-1.4.img and with command: flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img
it finally worked and I installed the custom firmware.
thanks again!
ah ok great to see you got it working
the standard dev phone firmware makes it a little more difficult to use lmao esp after getting used to the community baked roms
man i'm a real noob in android os and flashing these is also a dilemma, i've been using i-mate jam couple yrs ago now i have a diamond and also G1 with DRC83 i ask you to spend some time and explain me how to get it flashable and also which roms are most functional? please don't give links to guides spend some time to make a step by step manul for noobs like me i read through the threads but they are really complicated. no normal manuals even for an experienced ROM flasher like me. we- noobs need this badly...

Cant flash anything on a DEV G1!

Hello all.... I am working on a group project where we will be using a dev G1. The phone was shipped to a another group member and before I can get my hands on it, he decided to upgrade the firmware from 1.0 to 1.6, having very little knowledge of android beforehand and therefore he cant really tell me what exactly he did either. He followed the directions on the HTC website. As far as i can tell, I do have the 26I radio, engineering SPL and 1.6 installed currently, not sure about the recovery though (i.e. stock 1.0 or 1.6). When I got the phone, root access was gone but followed some simple steps on this website to regain it. By way of typing in "su" in terminal emulator and in ADB shell, I now also have su. However I still cant flash anything. When trying to flash cm 4.2.5 in the recovery, the system verifies it and then aborts installation. I then tried to install the Amon-RA recovery to no avail. Tried fastboot, ADP, terminal, im not sure how to access the /data/ partition on the phone and there is no option for acessing the console in the recovery menu. Installing through ADB dosnt work, no test-keys in current recovery. In fastboot it says "okay" for both sending and writing the recovery but rebooting into recovery shows that it didnt work. In terminal it says "flash_image: not found". I'm kinda lost and need some help....
All I need is cm4.2.5 on the phone with root.
Thanks in advance.....
Edit: I triple and quadruple checked the name of the recovery image when trying to install through terminal. I'm pretty sure it cant find the command "flash_image" and not the file itself. Just wanted to clarify...
You could try downgrading to RC29: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...ngrading_to_RC29_.28US.29_or_RC7_.28Europe.29

Tried that, already... That method only works for the stock T-Mobile G1's which have a different SPL. The Dev G1's come with engineering SPL and I have no idea how to flash the .nbh image from that. All it does I think is enable Fastboot, I cant get it to do anything else.
This fails?
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Nope... No luck, it says:
sending 'recovery' <4456kb>.... OKAY
writing 'recovery' <4456kb>.... OKAY
and then I reboot using "fastboot reboot", wait till the homescreen loads, and then go back into recovery and it still shoes the the triangle and the !.....
Bump...
Anyone?? Right now we just have a reallly expensive paper-weight in our hands ANY help/thoughts/comments would be very appreciated...
This thread is meaningless since there is NO SUCH THING as a "DEV G1".

Do you see ANYTHING on there that says "G1"?
Answer: No you definitely do NOT.
If I remember correctly, after you use fastboot to flash the new recovery image, you can't let the phone reboot or it will overwrite the recovery with the stock recovery image
The solution would be to use fastboot to flash either Cyanogen's or Amon_RA's recovery image, and be quick here, but when you send the fastboot reboot command be holding down the home button on the phone so it will boot to the custom recovery image

[Q] HTC Hero CDMA Recovery mode stuck on splash screen

Right now I am tinkering with the Linux kernel for the HTC Hero. I am able to build the kernel source from the HTC website and have access to root on the device. However when attempting to flash the zimage using fastboot it gives the error "(Remote: not allowed)"
While searching through the forums I have found that there are additional steps that needed to be done to fully root the device. I have followed the instructions on the following thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
After flashing the recovery image and sending the command to reboot into recovery mode, the device will start up at the HTC splash screen and will not continue further for upwards of 15 minutes (I have not tried waiting much longer)
I have also attempted the flashrec method outlined here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603052
Recovery mode yields the same results when booting into recovery mode from shell or from hboot's home button. Has anybody ran into this problem and found a solution? If so, please provide direction.
do u realize the methods u are using are over a year old.
just had to put that out there...

Thank you for the response. Currently my device is running Android 1.5 so it cannot install this. I will try updating the OS in order to install it.
well, my best advice is this: hopefully you can run an RUU.exe while connected to fastboot. Follow the logical links in my links thread listed below, once you have RUU'ed to android 2.1, then root by whatever method you wish from my thread, hope this helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063843
EDIT: you may also be able to update officially from www.htc.com/support
EDIT 2: there are also links there to unlock the nand and bootloader AKA "s-off" so that you can fastboot flash your kernel. But look around in the development section, A LOT has happended since 1.5 lmao. Like custom fast kernels and nice ROMs and such.

Thanks for the assistance. I have updated my Hero to the official 2.1, then attempted rooting with z4root. It would freeze at the reboot screen for about 10 minutes, yet still rooted the phone (except the recovery partition)
I had tried using fastboot to load my own zImage, but it would continue giving me the "Remote: not allowed" error. After that, I unrooted through z4root to undo my changes and used RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3 which installed clockworkmod as the recovery partition. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909258 )
Once I had done this, I was able to boot into the recovery partition and use the unrevoked-forever boot to have hboot turn to "S-OFF" ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955 ) which seemed to work. However, when runnning
Code:
fastboot flash image zimage zImage
It gives me the same Remote: not allowed. I saw a post for using fastboot without s-off by booting into RUU mode, however it would not recognize the zimage partition.
Do you have any more suggestions?
I really appreciate your assistance

regaws s-off allows flashing HERCIMG.zip to any partition, in your case the boot.img. The ohter s-off method by darch allows fastboot commands. You should read up on regaws way. All you need is a zip that contains a boot.img and an android-info.txt. If you wish to flash darchs s-off methos over top of regaws you CAN do that, I did that myself. That way you can use whatever method you wish. There are links in my links thread. Good luck.

[Q] Problem installing Recovery (out of memory)

Hello everyone,
I've already searched for this problem but I don't find a solution that works for me.
There is my problem :
I have a HTC G1 with COS-DS one day I tried to update de recovery with the beta one. I always have done this using the terminal so :
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
And then the error starts saying that he had problemas reading 0x0000000 (out of memory), and a last message saying "error writing recovery: No space left on device"...
When I try to flash (that recovery or another one, the problem is the same) with fastboot, he says me that he doesn't have the right signature :S...
How can I solve the problem ?
Thanks in Advance ^^
PS : Rom Manager says that the recovery install successfully but it isn't truth, and Recovery Flasher didn't work too.
Pss : Sorry for my bad english
flash this file in recovery, than do superwipe right after and reboot
re
I don't have any recovery :S When I first tried to install the recovery and get the Read Error my current recovery just stop working..
o wow.. so what happens when you power on holding home+power?
I see the G1 T--Mobile screen and nothing happens :S...
hmmm but you can still get into fastboot?
EDIT: what was your latest radio & hboot?
Hi (thanks a lot for taking your time to help me ! really !)
Yes I can boot into fastboot (but if I try to flash the recovery using that solution I get a signature failed error.
Fastboot Informations :
Dream PVT 32B SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.33.0013d (DREA20000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.28.25
Before that I was using the firt Radio and Hboot with the extra Ram (I can't remember the version :S)
no problem man lol but dont get too excited bcuz im not really sure what to do.. normally you would do the fr remove when this happens but you went too far and lost your recovery lol im not too familiar with fastboot... do you know of a way to down grade via fastboot? or can you at least boot up into a rom right now or are you wiped? lol

I am using the COS-DS Rom working and booting normaly. So I can fully use Fastboot and my Rom... but if one of the 2 stop working... That can become a big problem :S...
The ironic thing is that I've update my Recovery because I dind't like the old one (ClockWorld installing with Rom Manager) in other to SuperWipe and then try the HTC SenseLX (your rom if i'm not wrong) XD.
ok well try to boot into your rom and download 'oi file manager' from the market than put these 2 files on your sd card!
flashrec
ra-dream
now open file manager and select the flashrec file.. open it then select backup recovery... if it does something or not we will see lol but than try to type in the box: sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
than the "flash recovery button should light up. Press it and see what happens..
I've already try that (as said in my first post zs) And he says No Commound Found (but I can give it a try again ^^^)
ooo ok no your probably right... did you try downloading 'rom manager' from market than open and select flash clockwork recovery... see if that works..
Already done XD Rom Manager says that "Recovery Succesfully Instaled" but when I try to boot into recovyer (Home + Power Button to boot), I have the same G1 -- T-mobile and nothing more :S
o wow... lol this sucks.. uhhmmm im not sure what else to do.. search xda for threads saying 'No Recovery' or something... im pretty sure someone recently had this issue and solved it.. i dont know what it could be...
When i've searched for a solution I've found this solutions :
1 - Use a software to close all open software and then flash in terminal (Not Working)
2 - Flash using FlashRec (Not Working)
3 - Rom Manager 4 (He says that the install was successfull but it is not truth)
4 - Fastboot (Erase recovery and Flash Recovery file.img) - (Signature Error)
PS : it's funny... RomManager says that My current recovery is Recovery RA Dream v.1.7.0 - Cyan... But it doesn't boot. Now I've flashed with Rom Manager and He says "Current Recovery : ClockWorld 2.5.0.7)... I will try to boot again
EDIT : Not working :S...
ooooooooooo i know whyyyy!!!! fastboot doesn't work for 1.33.0013d lol you need an engineering spl 1.95.2003 thats the one fastboot works on for flashing files
argh zs Is there anyway I could install that SPL without broking anything else (like the rom since if this one brokes the situation could turn into a nightmare to me :S)...

... it's not completely true ... you have restricted fastboot capabilities!
look at this thread: you can flash the orange-xxx.nbh using fastboot, then you have a full engineeering spl, you boot into fastboot, flash the recovery (using fastboot), afterwards flash radio and spl (both using fastboot) again ... and you are done, i.e. working recovery, 2708-radio and 0013d-SPL.
o haha ok than nevermind... im not sure what the problem is..
YEAHH My Recovery is back ^^ Thanks a lot !
PS : What is the rom the nbh installed ?
EDIT : I found it XD Android 1.1 THE FASTEST ROM EVER (I'm not being ironic XD) Thanks a lot again !

How to root 2.30.405.1 WWE (SOLVED 10 JUL 10 )

It says : Simply install this patch via CWM and reboot. From there you can proceed to run any root apps you need (such as Titanium).
I am S-OFF but I can not install CWM due to not being rooted.
@jul644
What is Sensation root got to do with IS root ?
My problem is I just flashed the newest GB WWE rom for IS and I dont know how to root it yet although I have a XTC Clip S-OFF'ed IS.
gingerbreak doesn't work?
Since this is the latest RUU , I think gingerbreak needs a patch
so you are still s-off? after flashing the latest ruu, hboot and all?

how about the other method.where you use a file to run in recovery?
CWM Recovery...
Ok copy the attached .zip file at the root of our SD Card and reboot into Bootloader by holding the Vol Down button and power button.
It will install the Latest CWM Recovery on your phone from Fastboot menu and after that you can install SU and Busybox from market and root your device
Don't forget to delete the file from you SD Card later otherwise next time when you'll boot again in Bootloader it will start installing recovery again
Alternately if you have Android SDK setup on your PC and ADB commands are working from your PC then you can unzip this file and go into the folder where its extracted and run this command to flash it from your PC:
"adb reboot bootloader"
This will reboot your phone into Bootloader.
After that run this command:
"fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
This will flash new recovery in there. Just reboot after this finish from your device.
I rooted 2.30.405.1 like this on my device.
You might have to flash SU using recovery later if it doesnt install from Market.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was traveling to another city so couldn't respond in time.
Good that everything worked out for you
That's why I said in my earlier post that if SU doesn't install then flash it using recovery. When SU installation fails it copies the SU binaries on SD Card to flash using Recovery and that way your installation completes
Enjoy yourself now

For the Sensation, currently we have a temp root called Perma Root , with this tool you can do almost everything as you can with root but its working until reboot
