[Q] Problems with Captivate + USB connection

Okay, I'm boggled at this problem. I'll provide all the details and maybe someone much more saavy than I can clear this up or provide a solution:
- Purchased new samsung captivate unlocked from amazon
- Phone is running stock 2.2 Froyo (I factory reset it once, from privacy options)
- Phone has no SIM card in yet.
Problem:
Phone does not connect to any computer or USB port by the provided USB cable
Troubleshooting:
- I have tried to connect the new phone using the provided cable and it only recharges. There is no sound or indication on the PC of detecting the phone. Only a beep on the phone indicating it is charging.
- I have tried every USB port (front and back) of 4 different PCs. 2 laptops, 2 desktops. Including trying USB ports with no other USB peripherals attached. (PCs were windows 7 64 bit PCs)
- The only success I have had - was when I tried it on a powered USB hub connected to a laptop, the computer detected a Samsung android device. It worked for 2-3 reconnect/ejects. Then was never able to repeat this success on any combination of USB hub + PC (laptop or desktop)
- I have tried a samsung stratosphere on the provided captivate USB cable, the Stratosphere usb cable and my Nook USB cable. It worked on all 3.
- The Captivate failed on all 3 (only charged, no USB to PC connection).
- I have tried debug mode on, debug mode off, mass storage mode, kies mode (with kies installed/uninstalled). Drivers installed, then uninstalled. Still only charges, the PC does not detect any device connected.
Conclusions:
- The USB port on the phone is faulty (then I would return it to amazon), this phone is 1 week old.
What I find odd is how it worked for 2-3 connections on a powered USB hub on one laptop.
- The 3 USB data cables I tried were all not "good enough" for the captivate but work fine for the stratosphere and for my nook. (Then I'd find a good enough cable)
- The phone currently does not have a SIM card. (not sure if that is somehow related).
I will probably return the phone at this rate, but would like to know if this is a common problem with Captivate with no common solution.
Side Question:
My ultimate goal through all this, is to root the phone so I can tether to it wirelessly. I obviously can't tether through USB since I am unable to make a data connection through the USB port.
If there is someway I can tether wirelessly without rooting the phone then I may be able to live without using a USB data cable.

But u may have a port problem... U can get USB Port repair done by a good trust worthy guy here... Samsung Captivate USB Port Repair
And as far as the wireless tethering, u can do it without being rooted, but it will cost u of course. That is, u will have to pay for the tethering plan.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking along a similar route that the data pins on the USB port were no good.
Seeing that the phone is only 1 week old I will probably return it and either get a new one or different model.
You wouldn't happen to know if this is a common issue with the Captivate? so I should avoid it in the future?

^ Speakin from my experience and what I've read over the past year and a half or so, it is not a common problem.
The Captivate was a great phone in it's day. But these days u have a wide choice of other more up to date phones.
The SGS II is my main daily phone now and my Captivate is my work cell.
Don't get me wrong though, the Captivate is still a great phone.

PC cant find my device

Hi, i was using a custom ROM on my GT-i9000B. Few days ago, my windows stop recognizing my phone.
I plugged a SGS SII and a Galaxy W at my PC, after that I wasnt able to find my own phone using USB.
I did a system factory reset. Now I am at stock 2.2.1 and I still cant connect it using USB. adb devices doesnt show nothing. Odin shows nothing too.
I also try reinstall kies and samsung usb drivers.
Alog cat shows:
E/MTPRx ( 4020 ) Battery charging. plugType = 1
E/MTPRx ( 4020 ) Not of USB charging. DOnt launch MTP APP

What does your Windows Device Manager show?

it shows nothing... ;(
my friends can use their phone here. THey have a Xperia S and a sgs W.
I am not able to use my GT-I9000B. Now I cannot even change my ROM cause odin is not able to find it! ;(((((

Try in order:
1) Use other USB port on your PC, preferred is on the motherboard (back side of the case) if it's desktop.
2) Use other USB cable.
3) Use other PC.
4) Check if charging works from PC
5) Check if charging works from charger

1) I am using a notebook asus A42F I tried on 3 USB ports
2) I have 2 original samsung usb cables
3) I tried at my friends pcs and it failed too. At mine pc, when I plug the phone at my notebook , it plays a sound but it didn´t show the phone and the internal sd cards. ;(
4) charge works from usb cable
5 ) charge works from power charger

Plays a sound on PC or on the phone?
If it is only a phone playing the sound (charging start) then I'd suspect some failure (dust particles or broken connection) in the phone's USB connector - please take a look in to the phone usb socket - does it look ok, are there any bent pins, some large particles etc?

It seems its all ok.
I am worried about what alogcat shows.

I guess i will upload a new rom to my phone using wifi and update it from cwm.

This log part looks like charger connection.
So looks like although Ground and +5V connections are ok - otherwise there'd be no charging, two other wires - data connection are not connected or are shorted.

But I can't be 100% sure of course, might as well be a software glitch, so you may try usual routine - wipe cache partition, flash some good stock rom?

Did your previous ROM have fast charge? Did you ever enable it?

PC does not recognise phone [device descriptor request failed]

So the story is that i got a samsung galaxy note 5 (n920i) with a broken screen from my sister and it worked fine before. A year later i fixed the phone and wiped the files, cache and stuff i noticed that it did not charge with my aftermarket charging cable (battery was at 0%). I thought the cable was screwed so i used an official samsung one and it started charging. once it started up i did all the startup installation process and such but then i noticed that it would not use fast charge (i have an official samsung fast charge socket) even with the fast charge setting on. so i thought to plug it into my pc but it does not recognise it at all. (device descriptor request failed every time) I used many different ports on my pc and laptop, used many aftermarket and official charging cables, i even used it on devices like the gear vr and a docking station and they dont recognise it either.
I found a post saying to push up the tongue in the charging port which did not fix it, i tried all such drivers and fixes thinking its my pc and/or laptop but no luck, like i said i even used devices like docking station and gear vr and both dont recognise it either. So i just thought it may be the charging port its self and purchased a new one to install(i also got a new battery just incase) . After replacing both the charging dock and the battery successfully it still does not work on my pc nor does it charge properly. it is running on the newest update out right now.
edit: I also lost the little white signal cable for the antenna while replacing charge port but i have purchased a new one and its on the way. (if that causes an issue)
I have tried using samsung kies and smart switch with drivers and it does not recognise it either
I dont know what else to do can someone help me figure it out whats wrong.

My phone have a problem that does not connect to pc with usb cable, my last hope is to try to install a new firmware.
By research, i think its a software problem.

Thats exactly what i think but i dont know how to flash it without a pc

currently my note 5 no os installed, i try flash stock rom using odin but usb not recognized. i also try pendrive otg also unable to detect the pendrive

So i bought a used A2 for 5500 INR.
At first i thought it was a bargain but soon it turned out to be a nightmare.
The phone is full of bugs.
Worst one is that the phone only charges through the usb port. No data transfer of any sort. like an old nokia pin charger.
OTG doesn't work. It doesn't connect to the PC.
Whenever I plug in the OTG/connect it to pc, the usb options are all greyed out (same in the developers options default usb preference).
I can't even use Gcam now bcoz the PC doesn't recognise the device at all, so can't enable Camera2api, can't root, can't install ROMS... can't even buy a new phone cuz i have no money ???
turns out my phone also have the slow Emmc issue ?....read speeds are okay but write speeds are very slow... specially Random write (~10mBps).
I read many people have faced this issues. All those Posts are old, has anyone found a solution.

Try to reset the phone and then check the same and you can always use adb over wifi when phone is turned on incase u need but for fastboot u need cabel anyways try installing the correct adb and fastboot drivers check and delete old drivers tis may fix it or take to local shop

I had the exact same issue only charged and no data transfer or otg I'm computer it shows device description error but headphones worked fine I went to a mi service center and changed the usb port for rs.700 now it works like charm must be a water damaged sub board don't get cheap replacement from Amazon coz they only charge the phone and they miss out fast charging ic

Question Mi 11 not connecting to my PC?

Hello does anyone else have a problem with the Mi 11 connecting with a USB? I have the Asus Prime Pro X570 motherboard with mutiple USB ports, 2 usb ports on the front of my Corsair 5000X and every port apart from 2 will only charge the phone. The two usb ports connected to the ethernet rail the phone constantly connects and disconnects and the select file transfer, no action etc on my phone literally flashes and has seizure.
It can't be the cable because it works on other PCs. Also tethering works through USB. It's only when I'm trying to access the phones files?

Hello I Have the same Mainboard with the same problem and what can I say... For me the solution was an other pc to unlock the bootloader and flash a cfw. Then tested on my main pc and still nothing. Then tested my three other USB cables and with two it worked.
I have no idea why that is a thing. Maybe the Mainboard USB problem that had to be patched since 1.2.0.0?

Maybe it's an Asus problem but I brainstormed and was like wtf it's android. If you need to transfer files you can use an ftp client and do it over WiFi, but it still sucks cause I can't flash anything

I had the same problem but after I connected the phone to a 3.0 USB port the problem solved instantly.
