[Q] Cell Standby bug???? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to fix my friends captivate for a while with no success. I am quite familiar with the phone as I have been installing roms for quite a while.
Cell standby seems to be a major battery drainer, and even with the sim removed, it still drains about 30 percent in 4 hours after a fresh rom install with no new apps.
I have tried: Illuminance, Miui, CM7, Apex and all saw cell standby draining. It did not act like this in the past.
I have tried multiple kernels (TalonDEV, Corn, glitch, platypus, etc.) and multiple modems (KG3, KI4, and more I dont remember and even one from the Nexus S). I have also installed multiple Gingerbread bootloaders to see if that worked but nope.
All resulting with a drain from Cell Standby.
To note, the battery is probably wearing down after such a long use but cell standby shouldnt be draining on it that much should it?
I have also tested that cell standby does indeed drain after inserting someone elses battery into it.
From doing absolutely nothing on the phone, battery life drains completely in around 13-16 hours.
another note: I have the Rogers Captivate.
so... help?!?!

no one have any ideas?

Strange Battery Issue

Hey all, I'm new here since I just bought a used G1 on Craigslist after losing my previous phone, so this is my first Android phone. I rooted it and I've been messing around with the phone for the past week.
Everything's been working pretty well, but my battery behaves strangely. I'm current running BiffmodV2.1 on 2.22.28.25 using ezterry's kernel. I just did a clean wipe and calibrated the battery too.
The problem is, when it's sleeping (I put the end button behavior to sleep) it uses barely any battery. I leave it in sleep mode overnight and it goes down by maybe 2% tops. However, the second I start using it, the battery starts draining like crazy. It uses maybe 1% for every 1-2 mins I'm using the phone. I turned everything off (wifi, gps, data (I disabled data because I don't have a data plan), background data, sync), turned screen to dimmest, and setCPU to 528mhz. Even with all this, it still drains severely. When I use it for music with the screen off, it uses about 1% battery every 10 minutes, much better than the drain is nowhere near what it is when the screen is on (minimal use without music). When I put it to sleep with Wifi enabled, it also barely drains any battery, but same thing happens when it's awake.
Does anyone know a possible solution to this? I also recently bought a 1400mAh battery, but it's most likely coming tomorrow. The current battery is pretty old, it's the stock battery that the previous owner has been using for the past 2 years, but even then, it doesn't explain the difference in the battery drain.
TL;DR G1 battery drains like a mother when awake, uses almost no battery when asleep even with music playing. Looking for a fix.
EDIT: I also tried Super D 1.11, Chromatic, Cyanogen, and a few others. All had the same exact issue.
I'm having this exact same issue, my phone also turns off randomly when I'm using it. I didn't have this issue when using radio 2.22.27.08.

Sounds like it's time for a new battery. It cant be the rom doing it since you've flashed so many and it still does the same thing. Try out your new battery when it come I'm pretty sure that'll fix it.
Got my new battery, and things are much better. It still drains a bit fast with the screen on and doing stuff (texting, browsing, etc) but the battery life is much better now. I'm guessing the new battery fixed it!

[Q] battery issue- forgot where 0% is?

I've been experiencing battery issues for awhile now. while i was previously losing less than 1% of battery per hour with the phone idle, I'm now losing more like 2-3%. on the whole, I'd say my battery is lasting half as long as it used to.
I've looked into all the usual things like the kernel, rom, modem, app & widget setup, but nothing seems to be helping. I've tried most of the major kernels available (xcal, suckerpunch, suckerpunch voodoo, hardcore's, & di11igaf's) as well as a handful of roms. I even thought it might be a modified framework file from a theme I had applied, but that doesn't seem to be it either.
I noticed something the other day- I had run my phone's battery all the way down to 0% until it turned off. then when I plugged it in and turned it on to check my email, the battery indicator read 53%. I always flash to stock, clear battery stats, & recalibrate the battery when I flash a rom, so this was pretty surprising.
It feels like a longshot, since I have done all the recalibration/battery stats clearing stuff, but is it possible that my phone has forgotten where 0% is and my phone is now doing an auto-shutdown at 53%? It would explain my drastic drop in battery life.
If this is the case, is there anything i can do to manually reset my battery, other than clearing the stats in CWM and recalibrating?
Any help/suggestions are appreciated. This is basically my last attempt before buying a new battery.

[Q] Battery Drain After Updated to Latest official Gingerbread firmware

The battery drains very fast even when I'm not really using it, it uses about 20% of electricity just for 9 hours of idle.
Does anyone have the same problem?
I am also on 2.3.3 and constantly draining the battery completely and charging it several hours past the green light to make the most of the battery, but I still have to kill WIFI and 3G to even get it through ONE day, and that's only standby.
Donno if it was better b4 i upgraded 'cos I only had 2.1 the first day.
Thinking of getting the 3rd-party 1750mA battery, ASAP.
Also hoping the good guys can Root this phone soon, and warriorvibhu makes a swirling fast SUnAaBh-Sense-Rom for it. That would be fantastic!
I absolutly can't say that i have the same problem - actually, my experience is just the opposite.
Try to folow the steps in this post.
Yes there is an issue with the Incredible S dialer using a high amount of battery even while idling. This issue has cropped up after the 2.3.3 update.
The DHD is experiencing a similar issue. No fixes yet. Probably a bug in the ROM.
I just can't understand it. Why can't HTC make firmware that doesn't crave so much power? Don't they betatest at all?
I've tried the jkolner-trick vigorously and got a few hours more, but still not accepting i can't have it on standby for more than 24h. It truly SUCKS!
SO longing for S-Off so i can get the HD-Rom. Damn HTC!!!
Try airplane mode during the night, i went from 10-15% to about 3% overnight.
I had the same issue
Resetting Battery Stats solved my problem.

[Q] drastic battery drain galaxy s

After a difficult update with Kies I was able to upgrade to Gingerbread.
Everything seemed to go well the first time then I found drain battery and slowing down on the system.
So I decided to make a simple wipe which reported the phone as fast as at first, but the battery still has problems.
In one night from 90% it was completely drained so today I decided to use 'Battery Calibration' made from user 'marosige'. This time in 5 hours I lost 30% of battery life using some sms, internet for 15 minutes, and playing cut the rope for 10 minutes. More or less.
However I have to see if the battery loses all of a sudden like last night which is the biggest problem.
All of this is not normal have you any advice?
Thanks in advance
Hi Fattox,
Dont worry your socks off I flash Roms quite often and this requires me to calibrate the battery. Sometimes with certain Roms I find the battery may drain quickly the first time and then things get better.
You say you have calibrated so that means the app you used should have deleted the old battery stats from your systems file. In saying that if you follow these next few step you should be ok (unless there are other issues causing the drain)
1. Make your you drain the battery fully until phone dies and can't be turned on by pressing the power button then....
2. Plug in phone and keep it off until battery is fully charged. Don't take it off charge as soon as it says full. Just let it go for about an hour more or so to ensure it's at capacity.
3. Turn phone on and use as normal until dead...
Providing there are no other issues causing the battery drain you should find your battery usage to be satisfactory. Remember to turn off wifi and gps when your not using them as well as maybe turning your screen brightness down. Anything that uses less power the better....
Hope this helps.
between the recalibration with the app and your point 1, I had the same problem: during the night the battery loose all the energy.. so strange.
All this after I upgraded to Gingerbread.
I'm going to test all this week then I'll spend my warranty.

[Q] Ativ S - battery draining quickly

Hello,
I have an Ativ S and about a week ago the battery started to drain very quickly - about 15 to 20 per cent an hour.
I do not have wifi, bluetooth or gps on and usually the battery lasted 2 -3 days but now I need to recharge twice a day.
I thought that this was maybe caused by a program so I reset my phone and reinstalled only a few programs, but that did not work.
1) Is there any way that I can see if an app is draining my battery quickly?
2) Could this be a hardware problem? If so, how can i tell if it is the battery or the phone? I think that my warranty has expired, so returning it is not an option.
PS It is on GDR2, no interop unlock or any other tweak whatsoever.
Thanks
I'm not going to say it's flat-out impossible for an app to drain your battery that fast in the background, but it's not far off. If you want to be really sure, though, enable Battery Saver mode immediately after unplugging the phone (at full charge) and don't use it. Battery Saver prevents all background app activity, so there won't be any apps running and therefore they *cannot* be affecting the battery.
I'm pretty sure that, given the rate of drain and the fact that it persisted through a hard reset, you have a hardware problem. The good news is that it might just be a bad battery - that is a thing which happens, and it's even fairly common on batteries a couple years old - in which case it's a good thing you have a phone with a user-replaceable battery! The way I'd test that is to swap your battery into somebody else's ATIV S and see if the problem persists. If so, it's the battery; if not, it's your phone. Alternatively, you could just buy a second battery and see if that helps.
One other thing to check: if the battery really is still working and the phone is draining it that fast, it'll be dissipating a lot of energy as heat. Does the phone stay abnormally warm while the battery drains like that? That would be a sign of a problem with the phone or the OS, as opposed to the battery itself.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure there are some battery diagnostics and charging statistics located in the Diagnosis app (##634# in the dialer). I forget the code for them but I have all of the codes written somewhere; alternatively, you could do some searching. You could compare the reported battery capacity there with the expected (design) capacity.
I reset my phone again, installed only Viber and till so far, the battery drain seems to have disappeared (or at least improved).
Some users on wpcentral reported that they had major issues with battery drain caused by Whatsapp.
I used Whatsapp for quite some time but never had any problems( till now).
Maybe the last update caused this, i dunno...
Anyway, thanks for your answer.
I will see how it goes and I will let you know.
