[Q] Every ICS rom I try always causes the same problem. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried Teamhacksung, ICSSGS, Fusion, and a few others, but every one I flash leaves me with the same problem. I never had it on and Gingerbread roms or froyo.
My phone is constantly shutting off at random times during the day with no explanation. One minute I'm using my phone and the next it's just off. It's never shut off while I'm using it but if I set it down and come back to it later it will be off.
Anyone else had this happen to them and possibly find a solution?

Try flashing a different kernel??

Should have mentioned I tried that as well, but not many. If you have one to recommend I'd try anything.

I would say try using the glitch kernel. And btw are you on GB bootloaders?

I' using Glitch right now and I have no idea about the bootloaders. How should I find out?

He has to be if he has flashed ICSSGS successfully.
But the random shutdowns and things like that are typical bugs of beta ROMs. I remember having these problems all the way back in froyo. Try different setups with kernels and see whats the most stable for you. If you have to have a rom that never messes up try a gingerbread based ROM until ICS gets a litte more stable. Also if you are overclocking or undervolting I highly suggest removing them both to improve stability.

I897 ROMs problem

With all the I897 roms im having a really annoying problem.
The phone powers off in the night, or after long periods of the screen powered off.
I can't even put an alarm because the phone is off after I wake up...
Im sure its not an app problem because it even happens on stock KJ3, and also not a problem of my.phone, because it doesn't happen in i9000 roms, or CM7.
Anyone else having this problem?

This happened to me when I was using SetCPU. If you have that or any other CPU governing app installed, try removing it and see if it helps.

i897 GB Bootloaders, more specifically: OneClickI897UCKF1-bootloaders
I have had 2 or 3 sleep of deaths since running the KJ3 leak. ?? Maybe just a bug in the firmware, because I usually stay pretty close to stock, except for boog's kernel and dev launchers. Don't use widgets that much, etc.

It happens to me EVERY night, and it happened also on Pinnacle (KH3 ROM)
Yeah that's not right... ??? I don't know what to think about that, especially since it doesn't happen on i9000, etc.

Yeah I thought that it was probably my device but then I flashed i9000, CM7, MIUI, etc, and tested them all for a few days and none had the same problem.
I would use any of those but: MIUI and CM7 have bad battery life, and i9000 ROMs have that annoying charge bug. i897 have great battery life but it's really annoying that I can't use an alarm.

[Q]No data connection on captivate with custom roms?

I am using a samsung captivate running aokp build 31 semaphore kernel. I cannot seem to get data connection at all. I go into settings, more, mobile networks, and when I click network operators, it just searches for a network forever. I have tried several roms and still cannot get service on any of them.
Is there something I'm missing that isn't getting me any connection? If so, what can I do to fix this problem?

Well I changed the kernel from glitch to semaphore to see if that would do anything but it still didn't work. I'm new to all of this so I don't know if kernel is the same thing as modem.
Kernel is different than the modem the modem is what controls the cell signal part of the phone there is a website that has a map and it has pins on it that tell you what modems work best in what areas you will have to Google it because I don't remember the website off hand and you have to be on a computer for the site to work right.

thanks i found the website. but if i flashed a different modem and my service still doesn't work what could be causing the problem then? And is ice cream sandwich a froyo or gingerbread rom? because i basically only use ice cream sandwich and i want to make sure i dont flash a froyo modem for a gingerbread rom.
Just flashed a modem from that map. thank you so much. I got my data back and at my house where i get no connection, i have full bars. Thanks so much. Now last thing, i can flash a rom over it and it will stay correct?

ICS is basically Android 4.0 gingerbread is 2.3 and froyo is 2.2. You are gonna want a modem that has ics in the name of it I think the one I'm using is cm7-ics -jl3 or something along those lines.

yeah i got cm7-ics-UGKG3. Data works great. Will the modem affect the battery life as well, because i was getting terrible battery life with any rom, so if that affects battery life, then that could have been the reason it was so bad. I was just in a bad modem. And also, does it affect the performance such as smootness, or is that the kernel and roms job?
Also, when i flashed semaphore kernel and was using that. I tried to install a rom or anything, but it said there was an error and it wouldn't let me flash anything. Is that normal for a custom kernel to do that? this was the first time i tried a custom kernel normally i just use the one that comes with the rom. I had to restore one of my old roms because CWM wouldn't let me flash anything new.

It will affect battery life but won't help with smoothness different kernels and roms help I over clock mine to 1300 mhz instead of stock 1000 that seems to help but the captivate period has bad battery life so I got the extended battery for 13 bucks and I don't even look at the battery any more.

Okay thanks. And if you flash a rom over a custom kernel such as AOKP with icy glitch kernel over semaphore will the icy glitch kernel replace the semaphore kernel then you would have to reflash semaphore or will semaphore stay?

It will replace it but I seem to have better luck with icy glitch and I don't think you can over clock with semaphore.

fixed it by flashing speedmod kernel.
It's a known issue. ICS 4.0.4 Bluetooth doesn't work on custom kernel. But speedmod (since k3-9) and Notecore has fixed it.
if your using speedmod kernel versions prior to k3-9... you can't hold on your BT for a long time..it would just turn off for brief seconds... its a known issue on lower versions of the speedmod kernel... install speedmod k3-9 and higher and your BT will be fine.
i have installed stock GB, then updated to ICS thru kies, everything Stock....still BT doesn't work...
u are saying if i put a custom kernel it will?
is it safe to flash that speedmod over stock kernel?
Nop it should work on stock.. If it doesn't work on stock it won't work on anything

Any harm for flashing kernel too manay time?

Everyone can tell whether flashing different kernels (hydracore &speedmod) back and forth many time on ICS 4.0.4, does it cause any problems to the phone or not? For example, apps do not work or sth.

In my experience, as long as the kernel is Safe and Compatible, flashing again and again would not cause any damage. I would recommend using a Kernel Cleaner (jBroid Kernel Cleaner for example) if you plan on flashing different kernels regularly.
Hope this helps.

CM7 - using a custom kernel?

Hi all,
First time posting in the IncS section. I bought an IncS a few days ago and I'm pretty happy with it. My previous phone was an Optimus One (P500) which was running a modded version of CM7. This is my first HTC phone so I hadn't used Sense prior to this one. After spending some time on ARHD, I've decided that I'm not a big fan of Sense.
I'm planning on flashing CM7, but I was wondering if those of you that are using CM7 (or have used it in the past) have used a custom kernel with it or is the stock CM7 kernel the best option? Am I right in assuming that Redux and XS kernels shouldn't be used with CM7 since it's a gingerbread based ROM?
Tiamat don't even think just Tiamat.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
Thanks : ) I found Tiamat's kernel page and noticed the latest is 1.1.5. I'll give that one a go.
Couple of questions since I see you're using Cm7.. From checking XDA and a couple of other forums I've read there's an issue with the backlighting on the buttons not working, but I'm unclear as to whether this is still a problem since these seemed to reference older builds of Cm7 from a few months back. I noticed the newest nightly was 20121111. Would you happen to know if the backlighting problem is still there? Also, I noticed there was a fix for camera freeze that was incorporated in the stock Cm7 kernel in the last couple of months. I'm assuming this isn't in Tiamat's kernel? Looks as though his latest kernel was released last year.

IMO stock kernel is better choice.
Yes it's already includes camera freeze fix, so there's no need in flashing it manually. But anyway you can try tiamat+fix
I can't say anything about backlights bug, coz it was long time ago I used cm

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I tried out CM7, both with stock kernel and the tiamat kernel. All went well initially. I couldn't believe how much more RAM I had available vs the Sense roms. After using it for a few hours the phone would freeze up at random times, and it would freeze up when I'd try to use the dialer. I ended up having to ditch CM7 and go back to a Sense ICS rom unfortunately. CM doesn't seem to have the level of development and testing on the IncS as it does on the Optimus One. With any luck there will be a stable CM10 available at some point.
