[Q] How to upgrade Xrecovery - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks,
I'm really a noob in the Android world so bear with me please
I've recently installed Link2SD and partitioned my SD. Now, I want to backup my system + data + ext partition but I have no such option (nand backup + ext) in my xRecovery ( I think I'm using a very old version xRecovery 1.0 mini-alpha).
I've come through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119456 and I found CWM-recovery-4.0.1.5 but I'm not sure which one of the two should I use? Can I use the zip file from within my current old xRecovery to install the new one (install custom zip)?
Thanks for the help!

IMO You can flash CWM throug Your xR. But You must remeber to flash good version:
- "Amend" should be flashed by xRecovery
- "Edify" should be flashed by the previous CWM recovery
Click to collapse
Co You will have to use "Amend" version

You will need ClockWorkMod recovery to flash newer ROM'S.
"Amend" should be flashed by xRecovery
- "Edify" should be flashed by the previous CWM recovery
Click to collapse
I will put downloads to these files.
and here for edify
EDIT: Xrecovery is old now, and ROM's are becoming more stronger and powerfull, so they needed a powerfull recovery to flash them
What i really wanted to say was, there are 2 ways of obtaining ClockWorkMod recovery
1. you can do what is above, which is flash edify and amend, but look at this face ---> ಠ_ಠ
I have heard that it is possible to do the flashy thing with edify and that, but some people just ended up with a Brick, so i would follow step 2 instead, just for your own saftey
2. Flash GingerDX v013 then boot into CWM (because GingerDX has clockworkmod recovery installed) and choose one of the latest ROM's you downloaded
Hope it helped and good luck

Thanks a lot guys for the help. I've installed the amend from the old xRecovery so now I have the new version but when I go to backup, I still can't backup everything with the ext partition why? I'm going to read more about GingerDX because I have no idea about it .

ಠ▃ಠ you dont know what Gingerdx is? its only 1 off the most popular (but old) ROM's. however, gingerdx is old now, if doixanh dont wanna update it, then he wont (but he has family as well, just like the rest of us). There are newer ROM's out now (im making one rght now) so you could try out those ROM'S
good luck

Well, CWM 3.2.0.0 as shipped with GingerDX should actually backup a sd-ext partition if there is one.
It won't backup a ext3|4 formatted /mnt/sdcard partition and it also won't backup a swap partition (because that won't make any sense at all).
The real problem, however, is that THIS CWM version has a backup/restore bug!
CWM happily creates a backup and will even tell you that everything went fine. It will even happily restore a backup and tell you that restore went fine. At the moment you reboot you're stuck with a soft-brick at the Sony Ericsson logo.
CWM 4.0.1.5 works, but the problem is that this particular version lacks the SD card partitioning feature.
In short: The state of the CWM ports to the X8 isn't very bright.

i use CWM 5.0.0.4 i think
thanks to alfs kernel

hmmm.... so there is no way to backup an ext partition without installing a new ROM? I just want this because I use Link2SD and I want to backup everything. I can do it manually by using Linux but I thought xRecovery can do it. Is there any bugs with CWM-recovery-4.0.1.5-e15-Amend? Is it dependable? Is there any aother backup apps I can use it instead of xRecovery?
Cheers

I replaced the cwm-rec.tar in GingerDX with the tar of CWM 4.0.1.5 and am happily using it ever since (restoring backups - as I did some testing with the X8 lately, so it was very welcome to have a working backup restoration) - it works very well if you can live with the missing partitioning functionality (read: no way to partition the SD on the device).

[Q] OK Help, A2SD broke and nand restore won't work!

Hi Guys
I always tell myself not to fiddle with my phone at the weekend, but I simply can't stop myself. Anyway I saw that some of the ROM Chefs had come up with some 2.3.3 OTA ROMs so I flashed one. Not a problem there, but A2SD was not appearing, so I ran the DT script again. Still nothing.
I tried restoring to my known good recent Nand backup, and got a bootloop?!?
So what I'm really asking is how on earth can I get my 1GB partition back for DT A2SD on the new Gingerbread (Geo) Rom, or why won't my restore work? (Again it might be to do with the fact it can't find the sd-ext to restore to?)
Any help appreciated as I'm not going to spend half a day fiddling again!
Thanks
What recovery are you using? I had the same problem a little while back when I tried flashing a CM7 rom...turned out it was an issue with CWM 3.0.0.5 I had to completely format and repartition my SD card, then go back to a backup that was on my PC before I could get it to work. I know use AmonRA and have no further issues.
I too an using the latest Clockwork recovery - will use Amon-Ra from now on methinks. Unfortunately "somebody" deleted the latest Nandbackup so I'll have to start from scratch!
Also keep in mind that any backups made with CWM cannot be restored using AmonRA...which sucks. I restored to a previous version of 2.2 with CWM after formatting and partitioning my SD card, downgraded to CWM 2.5.1.4, restored to a previous known good backup of a rom I usually use, then after everything was back to normal used ROM manager to flash AmonRA 2.2.1 Once all of that BS was done then I made a new Nand Backup with Amon and now I am good to go. I don't know if I'll use CWM again after going through all that BS...

[Q]Flashing a custom ROM from Stock.

Hi everyone here, im a happy new O2x user. Im coming from an Optimus One.
I have some questions (maybe stupid questions, sorry about that) and i hope somebody can help me, i have been reading a lot of post around the forum but i didnt understand any clear answer for this, i'll apprecciate any help.
1. Whats the different between install Recovery from ROM Manager and install other way like this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098745 . Which one could be better option?
2. Where the ROM Manager installs the recovery (I mean external or internal storage)
3. Whats the different between mount CWM on internel or external storage?
4. Is necessary an EXT partition in every ROM? The partition is for Internal or External SD? on LG P500 the EXT is for install apps on external MicroSD, so what is the EXT partition for on the LG P990 if it has a lot internal storage itself?
5. G2x is only for T-Mobile? how can i be sure that my phone is 2x and not G2x? (Mine is a P990)
6. Last question, HDMI works on any ROM?
Thanks in advance guys, and sorry for being n00b u.u
pd. Sorry about english.

Hoi,
may I can help you a bit.
1. To install the Rom-Manager you need to root your device first. The install via the manager afterwards is easy and smoothly. I think the CWM in this thread is not yet "officially" released because the ROM manager only shows 5.0.2.0. Doesn't matter at least for me at the moment. 5.0.2.0 works fine!
I recommend you to install it via ROM-manager.
2. It's installed on the internal SD-card.
3. Can't help you with that properly. CWM made everything as it should do for me. May it depends on the way you mounted your system. CM7 for example mounts your external SD as "internal"-SD to use it as system partition.
4. Sorry, dunno.
5. G2x is called P999 so you got a o2x.
6. HDMI on every ROM. Well, no ;-) On most stock based ROM's it works.
-> I recommend you this stock MOD rom [ROM] 20110921- lg o2x gb stock mod by topogigi v1.6 - Bug defeated!
It works quite well and is very fast and stable. V1.7 will be released shortly so you may wait till tomorrow.

I think imma use Rom Manager for recovery but, do i need any specific version? or i can just search for "Rom Manager" on Market, install official clockworkmod app and click on "Flash clockworkmod Recovery"?
About the ROM you suggest me to use, it said i need to flash GB baseband, the file to download for baseband is an extension .fls with 7mb size, that kind of extension is flasheable from CWM? if i wanna back to V10 baseband how can i do?

1- As said, just install ROM Manager from Market once your phone is rooted, then in the app's menu you select 'Flash Clockworkmod Recovery', in the pop up menu you select Optimus 2X and you're done. Suggest also to install O2X Reboot from market to be able to reboot in recovery (or normal mode) without having to play with buttons.
2- Recovery is a special partition, so it's physically installed on internalSD, in the 'system' part of it, you can't change it. The Backups are by defaults written on external SD card.
3- CWM mounts by default externalSD but you can access to internalSD also there is a menu entry for this.
4- Ext partition is not necessary here, and not used, it was a trick to expand 'internal app storage' in older phones. Don't bother with that.
5- You have an O2X.
6- HDMI works totally in leaked 'official' Gingerbread ROMs (and Froyo ROMS evidently) and works partially in CyanogenMod. In Cyanogen you don't have FM Radio and AD2P neither.
I recommand http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254359 (I use it), and CyanogenMod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058254)

You must flash Baseband with Smartflash (see here for howto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008070&highlight=smartflash). It wipes /data so make a backup of your apps with Titanium Backup.
With Topogigi's ROM the preferred Baseband is 0725 (I've got this one) or 0823 as it comes with 0725 RIL (read carefully the Opening Page of the thread all is clearly indicated). With CM7 many people have it working with old 0218 but works well with 0725 or 0823.

Install Rom Manager, and select flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it will install the latest recovery to your phone. It is recommended to have the latest recovery.
.fls cannot be flashed from CWM, u need to flash it through smarflash just download the baseband file and follow these instructions. http://android.modaco.com/topic/335494-12-aug-smartflash-stock-baseband-release-103521-20110725/
Note: Flashing the baseband will wipe the device, so dont forget to do a nandroid backup from the recovery before flashing it, just in-case anything goes wrong.
kk guys, thank you @Striatum_bdr and @hisham027. I think im starting to get this.
I already installed CWM from ROM Manager, really easy process. About all my other questions, everything is fine now, i think im going to full understand this within the days, thank you again for ur help. =)
About smartflash, whats the different beetween all that versions of baseband patch on the "How to" threads? (I mean Baseband 1035.21_20110622, 1035.21_20110614, etc.)
Once I get the V20 baseband, can i back to V10 and how? When i get the V20 via smartflash, my StockROM Nandroid will back the V10?
If smartflash will wipe the device, i must flash the ROM from CWM right after smartflash baseband patch, right?
Thanks in advance.

Those are basebands released earlier, you should use the baseband from the topogigi's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254359
You can restore the nandroid backup even after flashing a new baseband.
Yes, after flashing the baseband you can flash the ROM from CWM.

We usually call BB with the last 4 digits: 0622 for example, which means 22th June (=date of release, simply).
So 0725 is more recent than 0622 and so on.
Latest is 0823.
Smartflash doesn't t flash on /system-/boot-/data-/recovery-/cache filesystem and so if you flash V20 BB your Nandroid will be V20 BB... Baseband and ROM are completely separated.
I think you must consider the geographical zone concerned by Baseband. For example 0725 was an european Froyo update, so it is clearly adapted to european networks and standards.. 0823 was Canadian if I'm correct so perhaps not copatible with Europe, some 06xx were from Asia so didn't work at all on my phone...
OK, ty guys. I think i get it now. I just need to find the baseband working for mexico u.u. How do i know when a baseband is for Froyo or Gingerbread?
But now i have another problem, lawl. I flashed CM but i dont like the fact that External SD becomes Internal, so now im stuck on this ROM ¬¬, i want to try miui cuz' i like the visual style but it doesnt boot, i tried to restore nandroid backup but it stucks at LG logo for loike 30min and doesnt boot o.o, by the way how long can take a nandroid to restore? my nandroid size is like 1gb

You should reflash your Nandroid with a complete wipe and best re-format all the partitions (in mount and storage menu) before. I'm not sure MIUI is in ext4 filesystem like CM problem could come from that. And perhaps use backtoext3 tool (search in forum to have download link).
A Nandroid restore can take perhaps 4-5 minutes max.

Hi!
I have similars questions : I have an LG O2X with 0725 BB and stock froyo. I did a backup with rom manager and Titanium Backup.
I would install Topogigi 1.7 (ext 4)
Questions:
1. This install wipe my Internal sd?
2. This install wipe my external sd?
3. I have to move my rom manager/ titanium backup somewhere else (pc) to avoid data loss?
4. I will lose my photos and/or sms doing this? Rom manager backup doesn't concern also data (pics, sms etc.)?
thanks!

1) No. None of the sdcards are touched.
2) Same as 1)
3) Not really, but it's always a good idea to make a backup of the backup anyway, in case something goes wrong and you must do some type of disaster-recovery.
4) Photos will stay (as they reside on one of your sdcards, depending on settings), SMSs will be lost. Just install "SMS backup and recovery" from the Market and make a backup, and restore them later using the same app. (In theory you can restore SMSs from the Titanium Backup, but this sometimes leads to problems, I advice against restoring system data.) In the same vein you can also install "APN Backup and Recovery", "Call Log backup and recovery" and "Bookmarks backup and recovery." That should have you covered ;-)
Happy flashing.

Can recover with CWM recovery but no boot afterwards

I installed the NOVA HD software with CWM Recovery. Just to try it. I made a full backup of my original GB with CWM Recovery. When I wanted to go back to my original gb rom I wiped all memory and then I did recover my backup. But after full recovery and a reset the phone got stuck on the startup logo. So again a full wipe and then NOVA HD ROM on it. All went well, and the phone booted normally into ICS. After that NO wipe and recover original GB backup. The logo came. Then the original splash screen also. And then nothing again.
What am I missing here? What should I do to get my backup of the original GB rom back on my phone with CWM Recovery?
Perhaps a file system format problem ? What version of CWM do you use? Touch 6 version has problems with ext3.
Find and try backtoext3 zip to force ext3 on all partitions, before restoring. And depending what version of CWM you use try the Non Touch 6 CWM (see thread about new 6.x CWM first post).

Strange so.... Try back2ext3 anyway.
Try to flash cm7 or other GB rom. And after that restore your backup. Might even try with a stock GB.
working
hey if u dont want to root ur phone then go with smartflash .The below link is give u a original rom and installing method .BUT BE SURE IT WILL WIPE UR ALL INTERNAL DATA u must backup all data first .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1035041
in this u find the 2 files
1 fls file which is baseband file put it in cp bin
2 bin file which is ur orignal rom put it in ap bin
NOTE-- if ur fail in first 1 or 2 attempts then dont worry repeat it for several times. This will put ur device on stock rom and unroot
All thanks for your replys. I think I will give CM7 a try. And then trying to get the backup back.
But maybe I will stay on this Nova HD rom. It is very quick. I have it installed now for two weeks and don't have any problems with it besides the headsetbutton and videocam issues. I like the quick startup of the normal cam function though. And I use holo launcher which is for me the snappiest and lowest memory consuming launcher.

Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2 issue - SD card not getting mounted - and solution

After upgrading my phone to CM 10 and installing ROM Manager 5.0.2.1 (which
includes Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2), I had a problem in that nothing could be
installed because the SD card was not being mounted.
There was no way of downgrading Clockworkmod Recovery because nothing would
get installed.
After numerous methods, I solved this by paying for the premium version of ROM Manager.
Once that was done, I got the option of reverting back to an earlier version of Clockworkmod Recovery from
within ROM Manager. I chose (arbitrarily) version 5.0.0.0 and now the problem has gone away.

Weird, I did the same with the free version, downgraded to 5.2.something (that I had working before) and its working correctly.
In summary: DO NOT INSTALL THE v6, usb mounting does not work... yet
CWM 6 working ok for me.I can install roms etc , but I can't mount SD to use on PC
But if you're making a backup on CWM6 and you want to restore on CWM5 it won't work. The backups in CWM6 are a lot smaller and diferent from previous vers

Actually, you can change the way that CWM recovery backs up your system so in fact maybe by changing the back up method, you can restore CWM6 back ups on CWM5. This includes difference compression methods, file type, etc
Just FYI, you don't have to buy Rom Manager Premium to downgrade your recovery image. The 'free' way would be to inject it into a kdz file and extract AP and CP binaries then flash with SFT.

[Q] CWM can't find my Recovery Touch

My device is a P990h, wich is the same P990 but fabricated here in Brazil
I installed the LG v28G Stock ROM this weekend on my app, coming from a CM7.2. At that time I had CWM 5.5.1.5 and CWM Recovery Touch 6.0.1.5 (payed with paypal) with plenty of backups.
But now CWM doesn't detect the Recovery, prompting me to install it. When I chose to do so, it doesn't detect my device saying that it is not supported:

As I was concerned with a possible irregular functioning, I said that I did have it and chosed the second option (v3 and higher). Now I have CWM Recovery v5.0.2.8d on my phone and can't find the old backups and stuff anymore!
What should I do? Is it happenning because CWM really doesn't support P990's ICS? How can I upgrade the recovery tool to the newest one?
I'm thinking of installing a v30a stock ROM on my device, since v28G isn't matching my expectations, but I can't put it on with this issue bugging me
