I've seen multiple methods of dock mode being triggered on Android devices recently. Some are using multiple magnets and some are shorting out pins 4 and 5 on the USB connector.
Can anyone elaborate on how it is activated on the DS7?
It's triggered by bridging some pins on the Dell 30 pin connector.
I dont know which pins they are (as the connector is mostly undocumented, or just as much the 3rd party connector makers havnt documented it) but the pins might be for that specific purpose.
I would love to know which pins they are if anyone does know.

I have exactly the same problem.
I bought a retractable sync/charge cable from ebay.

However, if the cable is plugged into the phone, then the phone speaker (and I think also the mic) are muted. The cable dosn't even have to be plugged into the PC USB port to cause this problem.
At first I thought this was some incorrect wiring on pin 19 of the connector at the XDA end of the cable. This signal is meant to control whether the sound is driven out of the car kit pins or not. However, this signal was not connected on the connector, which should be ok.
I noticed that if the phone is paced in the original sync cradle, then the pda appears to go into handsfree mode, which would tally with one of the functions of pin 19.
All I can guess is that the s/w in the phone detects a signal on the USB pins and attempts to route sound out via the car kit pins.
Anybody know of a fix for this?

I know many people have exactly this problem. It is not a problem of our XDAIIi, it is the problem of the Sync charger. I remember someone has shown how to fix this problem of the sync charger in a Vietnamese mobile phone forum but I don't understand anything 'bout electric so I can not translate it. What a pity!

I have the link but I'm sure u will not understand anything 'cause everything is in Vietnamese. In that topic, one guy said that he could fix that f***ing problem and if anyone wanted to fix it, just brought the sync charger to him. He just shown how to fix it in a few words that no one could understand. But in general, he said: "open the plug head of the sync charger and remove the first "masse" string". Does anyone know what is the "masse string"?

I took another look at the wiring in my cable.
I noticed that pin2 (GND/Sense) was connected to the other GND pins at the XDA end of the cable. The notes in the above web page states this will cause the phone to hang up.
I disconnected this pin from GND and now I can hear phonecalls when the cable is plugged into the phone.
I noticed that pin 5 (Analog GND) was also connected to the other GND pins which is also apparently a bad thing. I disconnected it just in case.
Pins 20,21 and 22 are the 5v positive charge connections. They are not connected in my cable and I wondered about connecting them to the USB 5v signal. I decided to leave it in the end as they may draw too much current form the USB port. The phone does charge anyway - just very slowly.

In my cable connector there were two small red wires soldered to 3 pins (from '2' to '5' and from '5' to all three GND pins which were soldered together as one pin;
The thing is that '2' shouldn't be connected to GND. In wiki there were suggestion not to connect '5' to GND as well (has nothing to do with sound problem).
I removed those red wires and everything is working fine (I'm using it for a month now);

I just wanted to share what I'd done for my streak in order to quit carrying a cable around everywhere. This is just a quick outline of what I did and supplies I used to make it.

what to do:
-cut micro usb out of its rubber/plastic shell
-desolder all the wires
-cut the streak cable close to pdmi connector
-refer to this site for usb diagram, make sure to note that there's one pin that gets skipped over on the micro usb adapter

-solder wires accordingly refer to my pictures if you get lost (the pdmi cable comes with all the wires correctly color coded)
-plug into streak and see if it works
-if everything works proceed to make a plastic shell for it out of dvd case
-use a little bit of epoxy to mount everything and keep it from sliding around

Hi I'm not trying to negate the value of your guide in any way. I think a permanent mod to a compatible connection makes a lot of sense, especially if one never plans on using a Dell Streak 7 dock. The cable you linked to wouldn't work, because the jack on the non-PDMI end is a USB A female connector, which accepts the end of the USB cable (USB A male) that normally plugs into the laptop or PC itself. To make it as useful as the DIY adapter the OP mentioned would require you to dismantle the host adapter and replace the USB A female jack with a MicroUSB B female jack.

Not sure if this has already been discussed/discovered, but will it be possible to use the new Nexus dock "and" an OTG cable at the same time? It seems feasible given that the dock charges the device using the pin connectors which frees up the USB port.
One possible problem is that the dock also acts as a passthrough for data/audio so there may be a problem with the tablet trying to reconcile both sources trying to have simultaneous access.
I ask because it would be nice to be able to charge my Nexus 7 and utilize an OTG cable (for storage drives and game controllers) at the same time. I know there is an OTG Y-cable solution, but that involves rooting the tablet.
Has anyone already explored the possibilities of this combination?

I read somewhere else that while docked, the device doesn't react to an OTG cable. This is just what I've heard, haven't seen it confirmed.
This guy did something similar, and the results are evident: Dock point is useless! Charge and OTG can not be carried out simultaneously!
Would be nice to know, if Timurs kernel, which allows charging and multiple USB would solve this. Have no dock, so I can not check. What I would like to have is something like the magnetic pogo charger which is annonced for Nexus 10.

I'm hoping the answer is yes, but anticipating no. This brings up a second bit I want to discuss:
If the gold pins are only for charging, and the only way to physically "connect" with the phone is in the covered USB slot, how will we get any fitted docks that can do anything more than just charge the phone?
I'm thinking docks for a desktop or car for syncing or music purposes.

Charging only, and no you won't get *fancy* docks.

Since it almost impossible to find a PDMI Port, I retrofited a MicroUSB port.
I even contracted FOXXCON, got a reply contract DELL for replacement part.
I have Charging and Data + / - (Detected by PC) working fine.
Only Issue is that the device shows it's not charging when Power ON and connected to PC (Hardware Charging LED is lit).
-Maybe this is Normal??
It does show charging when power on and connected to Charging Adapter.
I will post pictures when I get home today.
