Hi people,
I don't know if it's me, or just my lack of knowledge as to topics on this problem..
I have Rooted my Galaxy-s because i didn't want the lot of standard apps, that worked really well..
After this i used KIES to update to Android 2.2.1, works fine!
Now i've been waiting for Gingerbread for so long, and according to Android, i should be able to update Over The Air.. but noooo..
KIES keeps telling me i have the latest Firmware installed.. but it clearly isn't..
My conclusion: i think i can't update because my phone was Rooted? PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong, which i hope to be the case..
I've tried factory reset on my phone but of course it stays Rooted..
Do i need to UNROOT my phone? Can't remember which programme i used to Root it so that doesn's help
Is it me, or am i just unlucky.. or maybe i just don't know enough about Rooting?
So, can anyone tell me how to install Gingerbread on my Rooted Galaxy S ?
Currently its running Android 2.2.1, Smallbandversion (whatever that means) is I9000XXJPY
Build number: FROYO.XWJS5
Sorry if this is the 100th topic on this, but i really digged a lot throuh other topics..
Loads of thanks in advance!
No, nothing to do with being rooted - won't make any difference.
Firstly ota updates not activated for sgs yet (ever?). Official updates are only available via kies dependent on your region and carrier, so you may be running the latest firmware for your combination of phone, region and carrier. gingerbread has only been released for a couple of nordic countries so far. if all goes well the rest of europe are expecting a general release very soon.
For the rest we are dependent on spoofing kies into thinking we are in region NEE (FINLAND) or flashing via odin. So you either spoof kies, flash via odin our sit tight and wait. But ota definitely not

As i thought, thanks to both!! I was a bit worried i c*cked up my phone there, but this tells me it's again down to lazyness on Android or Samsung's side..
I've been waiting so long so i got impatient and shovelled trough about all of the topics, but now combining your two replys, i think ill have a go with the NEE version then?
Beeing in Holland we'll just have to make do with a nice Finland version then that will make it interesting since Finnish is THE most weird written language there is, what with all the iiiimouyoniiisuomi and all but i trust it to have an English layout as well?
Ehm, i don't know the meaning of the term "Spoofing", is that a way to crack Kies somehow?
Again, BIG thanks to you! I will try the link and hope for the best, if it won't work i'll just have to be patient (so more).. Good thing beeing in Holland there are means to alter perception of time..
Thank you guys!

The NEE version definitely includes English and I'm fairly sure it includes Nederlandse too. Spoofing is a way to fool Kies into thinking you have a different firware/region, I've tried it and find it a messy way to upgrade. Just search spoofing Kies if you want to learn more about it. Personally I use use Odin 1.3, it's very easy to use, first make sure you can access recovery/download using the 3 button combo, and just to be safe, track down a stock version of the ROM your currently on in case you ever need it. JVH is also out now (a newer version, you'll find the thread here easily). I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work for you, just read through the guide a couple of times until you have it straight in your head, and if you're not sure about anything just ask, lots of good people on here willing to help others.

I've seen a few people post that gave them updates when they were using custom ROMs, but even if I flash a kernel on a stock ROM it tells me this version of the device cannot be updated. Kies is weird.
Kies updates official firmware only and will not update custom or stock roms .
But sometimes it gets in a muddle and does but very very rarely .

Well i thought maybe ill give my provider a call, after that i called Samsung.. anyway it's a maze of menus and of course none of the official people (who should know) don't know jack sh1t.. Seems like only thing they know is how to get the cash out of your pockets..
good thing the people on this forum DO know what they are talking about!
so adding up your replies above, i still wanna go with the Finnish NEE version, so i downloaded it, and installed Odin 3 on my laptop,
drivers for my phone are allready installed so Odin recognised the device if i connect it in download moce, so far so good on that,
now its down to the PIP, and i think the PDA stuff where i need to select the .tar files.. ??
am i right? i watched the Odin tutorial on youtube 4 times now..
and i downloaded the GT_I9000_XXJVK_XXJVK_OXAJVK_Sbl file, which contains these files when extracted:
-CSC_OXAJVK.tar.md5
-PDA_XXJVK_Sbl.tar.md5
-PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
i think this is the Finnish NEE version
so, which files am i missing, and which ones should i load in Odin?
i know this must be getting old but i know you guys can help me talking me through
so again, big thanks in advance!

For starters I'd go with JVB or JVH instead of JVK, and as it's your first time flashing I'd use a single .tar version like the one at the top of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037584
or one of these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
Both have the bootloaders so it's just handier.
You can also join samfirmware.com if you haven't already, plenty of firmwares there.
Once you have the single .tar on your desktop open Odin 1.3, click on the PDA button navigate to Desktop and select the appropriate file, (see pic attached).
Then put your phone in download mode using the 3 button combo and only then connect it to your PC. Wait for Odin to recognise the phone, when it does, press start and just wait for it to do its job. All going well once it's done it will reboot your phone, wait for the phone to finish rebooting before closing Odin and disconnecting.
If you still want to go ahead with the 3 .tar files you've already downloaded then look at the second link in this message, it has a good description of how to flash using the three files
that IS very helpful indeed!
now i even know in what order to do everything, its nice you explained it step by step so big thanks for that!
So, doing all steps gives my phone Gingerbead?
Im still puzzled as to why are there so many versions like XXJVB, XXJVH and all those? If it's all Gingerbread, does the correct version depend on which country youre in, or is it an updated version, or ar all of there totally different?
I just downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVB_XXJVK_NEEJV3_Sbl.exe.crdownload
Thats the "NEE", so should work on my device i understand..
so i extracted it in a folder and again there are three .tar files;
CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5
PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5
PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
so im guessing i only have to load the "phone" .tarfile into Odin?
i promise im not a 70 year old man, just a newcomer at flashing

Ok so you're going with the three file flash, that means that in Odin you click on the PDA button and navigate to wherever you stored the PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5 file, click the Phone button and find PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5, then click CSC and find CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5.
BUT....
You are coming from 2.2.1 right? I really think you should use one of the single .tar files in the pic attached as you're so new to flashing, they definitely have the GB bootloaders which you need if you're flashing from Froyo. The pic is taken from the second link I posted earlier. I flashed a single .tar and didn't do a wipe or factory reset and didn't have any problems. Just get the JVB or JVH one and use the method I posted earlier.
I'm using JVB with no problems, but others think JVH is better.
DMD9 i thank you again for all info you posted!
I will take your advice to use a single file, since all this still feels like blindfolded surgery to me and i take it when using 3 files theres more to go wrong?
I downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVH_XXJVO_NEEJV3_Sbl --like you advised
But if i extract theres these three files in it, so i take it i only need to load the PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5 in the PDA section ?
Which is the JVK.. the one you didn't reccomend
What makes a this file different from another? is it the features, or some country dependant thing? Or can i use this file, what are the drawbacks on this one?
Big thanks again!!

I remember you saying it has to be on my desktop? so the folder would be my desktopfolder then..

Excellent! You are now ready to flash Gingerbread.
Before you do it just go back and read over all the directions again then flash at your leisure
(The file didn't have to be on your desktop, it just makes it quicker and easier to find when you open Odin)
I'm relatively new to flashing as well (I've flashed about 8 times now, so I'm getting used to it lol) if you aren't sure about the naming of the different versions I.e. XXJVK etc. the best thing to do is join samfirmware.com. they have a page that explains what all those mean and how to understand what the basic firmware contains. It was a massive help for me.

Hi!
First of all, I thank you all devs doin so much work on these forums, I am going to donate to most of you developing for my phone. I am new to Android (coming from symbian, FINALLY!!). Maybe this helps, I used to read these forums regarding flashing, ROMs, MODs, etc, it didn't make sense till I purchased this SGN. I have little knowledge. So...
I've installed Titanium Back-up Pro (yes I payed for it) then this asked for root access, then I installed/flashed this kernel with root, CWM, Super User and other stuff.
Everything seems fine so far, Titanium says it's ok, I back-ed up all stuff with it.
My questions are:
1. I want to know if this change will remove completely my Samsung warranty? (the author of the modified kernel says that Samsung can track changes done to the sys files like kernel)
2. If Yes, this also mean I cannot update the firmware via Kies anymore?
3. Is there any possibility that the kernel I use to get updated? Does this mean it could conflict with some new firmware version (If I manage to get it updated)?
4. If I update the firmware (if possible considering existing situation), will this put back the original kernel? Is there any side effect?
Please take a minute to understand my concerns. I payed quite some $$.

1.Rooting voids the warranty, but good thing, flashing back to stock, you regains warranty.
2.You can update via kies (If your currant firmware same as it shud be for your country, b'coz if you manually update newer firmware, which was not released over kies in your country, Kies wont recognise and so you cant update) but, You will lose Root + CWM
3.Usually you will get newer kernel according to your firmware from thread you have used early. But to be practical almost newer near release kernel works for others. e.g. I am using CF Root KL7 for LA4
4.It depends on the way you are updating, If tou update over Kies OR with PC Odin, it will replace with original Kernel. Too keep Rooted n preserve CF root Kernel, you have to use Mobile Odin/ CWM to update firmware.
You may get details of updating newer firmware here

go through post#2 n 3 in detail
Excellent!
Thanks for your quick reply!
Sounds like you have the freedom to do all around upside down: go "illegal", go back to legal, but there seem to be more for me to understand:
Ok, suppose I proceed with update via Kies, I loose ROOT and CWM. Then, if I want to put back the root and the CWM, I need to find one compatible and it's not going to be for the same KKA I have right?
1. If your device is rooted then the their is so warranty.
2. Yes.. you will not get updates from Kies. (if you are rooted)
3. You can flash Official ROM and Kernel via PC Odin. (Warranty Revoke)
4. you have to flash Official PDA, PHONE, CSC Via Odin PC.
Then you ll get complete Official warranty. Be careful while flashing. Read everything.
Follow this thread for more details about flashing and follow the instructions.

Anyway, I am now trying to connect Kies and it does not allow it initiated from computer, but from the phone itself, via browser.

If you are rooted the device then you cant update from Kies. Just forget about kies.
if you want update device, download Firmware from above mentioned thread and extract it.
you should get 3 files.
Download Odin from the same thread.
Open Odin Attach those 3 files as mentioned in thread.
(i.e : PDA= CODE_xxx , PHONE: MODEM_xxx, CSC: CSC_xxx)
UnTick Re-Partition and leave Auto Reset and F.Reset time ticked.
1. turn off your device .
2. Put device in download mode by pressing Volume Down + Home + Power hold it for 3 - 5 seconds.
3. Device will prompt you to press volume up to continue and volume down to cancel. just press volume up then you can see Downloading mode screen.
4. Connect your data cable to device and PC.
now you can see yellow colored block on Odin and shows "Device Added".
5. Click start. Thats it wait until it restarts.

Ok now I understand there is a new update XXKKA but it's not available for Mobiles in my country, but it's available in Germany (everytime they have it first).
I will purchase a MicroSD in the next couple of days and back-up my apps and user data, then I will try to flash this latest firmware XXLA4.
I hope I can upgrade firmware with CWM so I can keep my data, my accounts, my apps and settings.
My question is now, my firmware now is XXKKA (my phone says it's the latest), is there any conflict with this latest XXLA4 or maybe kernel issue? I don't know much about these, I am just concerned.

Here one think you should notice that LA4 is an official update for only some regions. it means if the LA4 dint released in your region , Kies wont Support LA4 too even it is an Official.
I suggest you to update to LA3 , any way ICS will be releasing soon for our Note. and Don't bother about Kies update. more over in this ROM you ll get warranty too.

Hi
My problem is "Waiting for device"
My LG is on version 2.2.2 and it says that there is no Upgrade available
I spent 3-4 hours trying to root my phone but failed. Do I need to root cell phone before I upgrade to version 2.3.4 or can I switch to version 2.3.4 and then Root Cell Phone
Every time I try to Root my phone i get error "Waiting for device"
My debbugin is on, and I turned of my firewall is there something else i need to do to get Rooting Right ?
Thx
You can safely update to 2.3.4 and then root using one of these guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327599
Thx
That second link for update to 2.3.4 GingerBread works 100% on my LG Optimus 2x ?
EDIT : Can i get link for updating my LG from Froyo 2.2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.4 , safetly
It should work, follow the guide to the letter and you should have rooted your phone.
Here's your link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327929
Wait
First link is for Rooting phone
Second is for update to Gingerbread
Third is for Rooting phone on Gingerbread ?
No, the first three are all for rooting
The fourth one is for updating manually to GingerBread
Ok .. soo first i Root my phone by one of that 3 links and then i update to Gingerbread (4th link) ?
The other way around
If you first root and then update, you might lose your root, so...
First update then root.
By the way: After you root, do you want a stock LG rom or a custom one...?
Explame me what that means xD
Haha ok
Stock LG rom is just the normal rom from LG you have right now but then a little improved (removed unnecessary software and apps). Normally the people who like the looks of the stock rom choose Stock-based roms.
Custom roms are roms completely different than LG. They look different and they have different apps/software. Most people out here prefer custom roms like CyanogenMod or MIUI. I prefer CyanogenMod too because it's in my opinion overall better than stock rom.
You can find these roms in the development section. The reason why I asked you this is because if you want to have a custom rom, you don't need to update to 2.3.4. You just can root 2.2 and flash one of these custom roms over it. This will automatically update your phone to GingerBread.

No I didn´t try OTA update . I bought LG 2 days ago soo kinda new here xD
Try one first,
go to settings ----> about phone ----> phone version (or something like that, not sure) and do the update from there. Trust me, this is much easier than the kdz method. If there is no OTA, then you should use the kdz method.

Well i did this metod to root my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182
But how i can be sure that my phone is Rooted successfully ?
There are a lot of ways to check that. You can either look in your app list for an app called Superuser. If you have this app then you should have rooted successfully. But if you want to be 100% sure, download the root checker app and see for yourself .
Hey guys,
I just rooted my phone yesterday on stock 2.3.4 and got this annoying issue: Every time I shut down and restart my phone, some settings revert to default on their own. For instance, text input language becomes german (was the default language when I bought the phone), input text sounds are activated again, and so are mobile networks which I must disable quickly because they mean charges.
Could you please shed some light here? Thanks!

AFAIK, this is the only way... Because you have no OTA it seems that this is the only option. But I'm not sure about that.
My advice is to search, perhaps there is an easier way to do so.
EDIT: Download Rom Manager (app) and from there install ClockworkMod Recovery. With recovery you can flash a stock-based gingerbread rom on your phone! (how could I not think of that earlier ) make sure to do a nandroid backup in recovery mode.
EDIT 2: You might wanna try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408919
Flash this in recovery mode.
Or you can just go directly to the latest KANG-54 build. Android 2.3.7, very stable and smooth as butter.

after backreading for a couple of days, i have seen a lot ways to root & install recovery on our OptimusBlack .. . mine is V20B im knowledgeable enough about modding phones.. last two are OptimusOne(frroyo) & X8(eclair) ~
this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456274
or this one using BlackJack Method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111771
now my question is which method do you think is much easier to get 100% SUCCESS on ROOT
someone here who get a successfull root access using BlackJack?
any feedbakcs?
IMHO, if you still om froyo, the first one should work best (SoC right?)
But GB? Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23790405

Question: Does this method of rooting your Black leave the Phone untouched?
Cause my mobo died on me - and after the repair i got it back from maintenance with Stock V20N on it. I flashed then V20C, rooted it with SOC and put my Nadroid backup on it. I had then to install the LG Update (cheat with own little Webserver and edited LMHOST) to update to V20N / V20O. Now i am on V20O......
I have finally the phone and layout i like but miss root to Backup the current ROM.So after playing hours with it - and the upcoming CMW9 or Miui ROM around the corner - i need Clockword Mod. So question again short:
How to root V20O without losing settings / data / apps?
Pls advice and sorry if i overread the solution in some of the threads - i read them nearly all....

that method is for rooting GB right? but what about installing CWM?
Got my new OB and its on GB v20b..
That method is for flashing an already rooted version of v20.
Flash it (use the same version as you already have and make no wipes after)
then install superuser.zip and you ll have access to CWM.
That s all you gotta do.
Or flash v10a or similar with smartflash, root it, install cwm and then install any custom ROM you want. That s probably even easier.

okay.. now im confused where's the real thread or link for rooting GB v20b?
v20o root does not work
hi there,
first of all, I'm a noob in rooting and flashing, etc. I have a question regarding the mentioned v20o flashing (by SergovnikRZM):
I downloaded and installed all files, but in SmartFlashTool the start button is grey, I cannot start the process.
Also I cannot choose the Com Port and the LG Mobile USB serial port as the picture shows.
What should I do? Do you have any idea?
(I have a v20o Hungarian rom and the OS is xp sp3)
Thanks in advance and sorry if it's trivial but it is not mentioned in the steps..
How about enabling windows enabler? If your on Windows 7, you should run it as admin. you need to click on windows enabler, till it shows ON.
Ok, I will try, but this step was not mentioned...
(os is xp sp3)
when I tried the KDZ update I had to run windows enabler, and it was working well, and as I see this tool is also included to root, but this step is missing
Anyway, thanks your reply I will try it
Hi guys!
I noticed today that there were a system update for my optimus 2x.
But after it downloaded it said validating software package and returned an error stating that the package was invalid..
Has anyone else bumped into this problem? Is it because my phone is rooted?
It is otherwise stock.
Thank you so much for your help!
- Kevin
Okay.
So can i ask how do i unroot the phone using CWM?
I looked at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021554&page=2
it talks about installing a recovery.zip using CWM, but will it unroot the phone or not?
Thanks!
The name says it all and it is sticky in dev section...
{START HERE} ROLL UP THREAD - Guides, ROMs, Kernels
0. Read
1. Root following TrymHensen`s guide
2. Install DjangoManouche
3. Hit thanks to all of devs around for making this phone a racket
4. Sit back and enjoy
Hi and thanks for the answer!
you see, my phone is already rooted. I need to unroot it in order to get the latest update from LG installed on my phone.
The reason for this is that when i download the update OTA and try to install it, i get an error message stating that i have a invalid software package.
And the reason for this as i understand, is that the phone is rooted.
i have read the roll up thread you linked to, but it does not state anywhere how to unroot the phone. And thats what i need help to do
Use smartflash and put some older version on it, then update it to current version. It will be unrooted.
Thank you for the answer, will try that!
But im struggling a bit to find the older versions though. The links to them are either down or broken. I need the EUR version.
You can flash stock v20q via cwm. If you said that your phone is rooted, install cwm and then flash this stock v20q.
If you want to downgrade, then update using lg update tool, you need smartflash and some older firmware like Euro v10d.
You need to read and search, really, all is here on the site.
At least press the thanks button if my posts are helping you, it is right here.
Thank you for the reply.
I will flash with the v20q one you mentioned. Its the version im trying to upgrade to anyway, så this seems better instead of downgrading it to stock, then upgrading using OTA!
