Data Plan questions...

So, AT&T kills you on a monthly data plan, unlimited for $40 a month are there any alternatives for getting a monthly data plan or do I specifically need to go through AT$T for that service?
Also, I use the "No Data" feature which is awesome by the way to essentially turn off the data to and from my phone, I use WIFI. Someone sent me a text message the other day that I did not receive I assume because I have the data turned off on my phone, as planned.
Is there a way to get around this, t receive messages when connected via WIFI or is that specific to the data plan associated with AT$T?

u do not need to turn off your connection when using wifi. when you have wifi turned on and properly connected, all data usage will be through wifi so no charges. your phone calls and txt will still come through normally. you can call/email att to confirm, i did. plus you can also check your usage online and it will show no charges for anytime you are using the internet through wifi.

I can get sms through my web connection? I thought SMS came directly from my provider?
Is there a way to use another provider for data service?

That would be the best choice if you want to have data wherever you go for less then the DataConnect plan.
Well if you're without an access point that is.
I've been using it for a while now, and I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month, (IMplus / Tethering pretty much all the time) and it works great.

I've heard this before, I pay $39.99 for MediaNet unlimilted...so how do you get it so cheaply? The tethering can be done with ease but getting caught could encurr the wrath of ATT $$$$$ !

I'm using MediaMax unlimited.
Its unlimited Data /w only 200 texts a month.

I know I have the option of downgrading to MediaMax Unlimited online (account access) but I've contacted AT&T and they told me this is not supported so I'm a little leary to change it and have it cost me in the end. How long have you been using this? If it works fine I'll just downgrade and see what happens.

I've been using it for about 2 years now since I got a flip phone with a browser.
I've talked to AT&T about it and they do "frown" upon not using a dataconnect plan with a PDA but I've been using it with the HTC for 3 months and nothing has happened, plus I would just say that I have a flip phone that I can only use medianet on, and that I switch my sim to that from time to time.

The tilt will automatically connect/work with MediaNet.
The PDAconnect / Dataconnect plans will still get you on edge/3g, its just a fancy, more costly way of getting you there.
MediaNet will do the same... and you dont need a tethering plan with the tilt because, well, you have a tilt.

I think I might no longer be confused ... MediaMax is still a service offered through AT&T (https://www.wireless.att.com/media/cingular_video_purchase) at a reduced rate...
So, you can't get an external data plan from another vendor for your phone although @ $20 bones I think that falls in line with everyone else's plans.

For thos in Canada using a Kaiser on Rogers...

What type of plan do you have? And which options do I look for in order to maximize the capabilities of the Kaiser on Rogers' network?

I have the 3 yr vid calling plan (free for 3 years on contract) not sure if they have that now. Its weird to be saying this but overall, u should check out the rogers section at howardforums. Aside from that I am using a basic data plan that still works (10 megs for $5) but it can be tricky to get, especially now that rogers has Windows mobile data plans.

This is basically what I want to use in addition to the plan I have now (which is 250 anytime minutes, and the $11 Communicate value pack). I want to be able to use the GPS, 3G network, be able to read and send emails, browse the internet occasionally (youtube, etc.) and use Windows Live Messenger.

everything will basically need data except what u use for gps will determine if you need data or not

Don't go with the unlimited mobile browsing plan as it's not applicable with non rogers devices =/ (the csr's might not tell you that either) you'll still incur data charges. (check howard forums to confirm)
Your best bet is to wait for the tiered data plan that's coming out in a few weeks.

I'll be carefull with that as well. I have the same plan but on Fido and for the past 2 months, i havent been charged any extra (although i accumulated about 32 mb avg for both months).
Im still watching my data consumption... so hopefully nothing will change in the future.

Which is the best US provider to use with the imported Diamond2?

Hey guys,
I was wondering, which one of the different US providers would you recommend to use with an imported unlocked diamond2?
I'm currently with AT&T, and I'm having a lot of issues to connect to MediaNet... For some unknown reason, the phone looses its connection:
- every single time after either a reboot or using wifi
- on time to time, randomly without any specific reason
My main concern being: it's a pain to get it back! It takes several reboot and retry to re-setup the data connection.
I was wondering if some of you have actually experience better result with other provider or even with AT&T... (note: i m on a pay-as-you-go plan for phone and data)

I, too, am using Diamond2 with ATT and I'm ok with it. Granted, I've given up trying to use MediaNet on this phone but not really missing it.

I'm on T-mobile with the $5.99 unlimited data (T-Mobile Web). It's now $9.99 Web2Go if you are starting a new contract with limited data. Everything is working fine and the other day I got my email working on the diamond2 through the $5.99 plan.
No connection problems at all.

Same here with T-Mobile and the T-Zones plan, my call quality is pretty good with no drops & edge has descent speeds.

AT&T data plan is slow and not very stable for me...
The main reason I need it is: mails!
I got so addicted to the 'read mail everywhere' plan, it's scary... When it doesn't work, it's bugging the heck out of me
I found in the 'phone setting' that it's possible to change the baseband; so instead of having them set to 'auto', I'm trying to force them to be:
'gsm' and '1900+850' to see if there is any improvements.
In any case T-Mobile does sound a lot cheaper...
I m currently paying $100 for 400 minutes (good for a year) and $20/month for 100MB... That's about $30/months.

Edge on T-mo has really good speeds here in CO. That's why I don't mind not having 3G. Soon enough manufacturers will be making quadband 3g handsets. I hope.
Any who kandjar if you need help with the data settings if and when you switch to T-mo just post up. If you search google for T-mobile wireless configurator you can get the settings by selecting any WinMo phone in the list ut you have to change some things.

Disregard that last part about the configurator. The D2 finds the settings automagically for you. But you still have to change 1 or 2 things so it'll work.

Youtube worked on my Diamond2 with ATT. I don't have a data package with ATT, but I have wifi in my complex and I can watch Youtube on the Wifi.
As well as sending/receiving emails.

True, I should have been a bit more explicit..
I also managed to get it to work through wifi...
I m just wondering if this work with data plan (through medianet ...)

Yes it works fine on T-mobile edge. Maybe AT&T edge is a bit slow? IDK? This is on T-zones might I add. Not T-mobiles full web service. Who needs that with opera available?

Hotspot provisioning hack?

I'm currently on Verizon with unlimited data, but am considering changing to T-Mobile. On Verizon we have to hack the hotspot provisioning to get around Verizon's limits on hotspot data usage. It's my understanding that the $80 T-Mobile unlimited talk, text and 4G-LTE data allows only 7GB of hotspot data usage per month (or at least that's what they told me).
I'm not familiar with T-Mobile versions of the G4, but does a hotspot provisioning hack exist that will allow unlimited data for hotspot usage?
I normally use about 35GB of data per month. Does T-Mobile throttle you?
Sorry for the newbie questions, but would appreciate some advise from those with experience.

I did the exact same thing as you, switched from VZ to TMO. Much happier - when I get signal. Loving the 12 band of LTE, I get signal pretty much anywhere when I lock my phone to that band. You can't beat TMO's unlimited plan either. Yes, there are a few TetheringProvision hacks around. They're all dependent on what model phone you have and what firmware you're running. If you'd give out your phone brand/model and what version of Android you're running, you're likely to get some info either in the forum or privately.

starting today att brought back unlimited data for tv subscribers for a limited time great right? there will be a 22gb limit then you will get throttled, not so great. you'll also have to forfeit your tethering. do we think we could find a way to maintain tethering while going to the new unlimited data plan?

Sprint and T-mo do the same type of throtling but it's now what it sounds, they only throttle you on congested times and it's not like they drop technologies. you stay on LTE but other users that havent hit the cap or aren't unlimited get speed priority so it only really affects you if you're somewhere like san fran in rush hour where everyone is trying to use spotify at the same time...
like the other comment said that should allow you to tether but it's missing a step try this if you cant get that to work:

So they ding your speeds after 22gb? Yeah no thanks. I was interested in this but found out its actually more expensive then what I am paying now, and I lose tethering. With the data rollover I have, there hasnt been a month where I havent had at least 19-20gb to play with

I SWITCHED TO T-MOBILE AFTER 10 YEARS ON AT&T AND I LOVE IT. 2 LINES UNLIMITED EVERYTHING AND NO SPEED REDUCTION OR THROTTLING BEYOND 23GB AND NO DEPRIORITIZING EITHER. $100 bucks!

Keep in mind that T-Mobile has BingeOn, and it's automatically enabled unless you enter your settings and shut it off. That is of course unless you like throttled video.

Sorry did not have my glasses on and I can see Caps Better. Yes, I did disabled Binge For my line (left the Wife's on she won't notice). I went to At&t to see the offer and see if it would benefit me and I would just add two people from my family to have the 4 lines, and Switch to Direct TV also.
At&t and Direct TV will still be more than what I have .
At&t is the best Network in my Area but is too expensive.
I'm Staying with T-Mobile because of My better plan (No limits, no throttling, no deprioritizing in my local area, 2 lines 100 bucks) and I did not like Direct tv's equipment. I will keep Cable with my Tivo (6 Tunners 2TB capacity).
If Tmob gets more low freq Lte spectrum it will be better at penetrating buildings and icreased distances and then it can give The big ones a run for its money.
For now it meets my needs very good even when I go to Germany visit to my Daughter I can Txt and get Low speed Data.

*chuckles* I wasn't questioning your choice, though I did feel it was a bit odd mentioning it in a thread regarding AT&T unlimited data. Be thankful however that you're not on a MVNO like MetroPCS or Boost, since it's de rigueur to throttle LTE on most MVNOs, a notable exception being the GSM half of Straight Talk.
