Assistance needed - Editing framework-res.apk - HD2 Android Themes and Apps

I need some help in figuring out what images to edit in my framework-res.apk . I do not like the background for the notifications found in a theme i downloaded from the market for CM7 . I used UOT to make a framework-res.apk file (Custom Theme) and i want to use that image for the background . So i am using a self updated version of apk Manager to extract and sign my apks . but i can not for the life of me figure out which file controls the background for notifications . Can anyone shed a little light on the subject for me ? Ive googled and i found one thread stating that all png's for the status bar must be edited . but i find that not helpful as i dont know which pngs are in controll of the status bar and notifications background . I appreciate all help given ! Btw i appologize if im in the wrong section .

can you post a pic of what exactly you want to change? i have answers...but just want to be on the same page as you.

As you can see , my notifications window is brought down by dragging the status bar down . I hate that ugly background in the notifications window . I want to change it . But can't figure out how . Btw I failed to mention this is a theme I downloaded .

those are in the system ui apk, not framekworks.
like the pic with is shade_bg.
however, to change those remember you need to change the theme's apk, not your system as themechooser in cm7 supercedes the system.
cheers.

AHA ! You are amazing . I cant believe its named shade_bg like i was looking for something along the lines of notifications_background or notifs_bg or something that makes more sense xP that worked btw . now i have another question for you Since youre amazingly smartical !!
Here is a picture of the default theme . Notice where my toggle buttons are (at the top) its a solid background . But where my actual notifications are its not solid . Is this controlled by an xml ? i took apart the default SystemUI.apk and looked at the shade_bg and it is the same throughout(i figured the top of the image was solid and the rest was transparent)

it would make things easier if you drew on the picture so i knew exactly what you are looking at.
if you are talking about the area around the words "no service" and "ongoing" the background is a .9.png but i forget which - however, i have never seen it transparent.
the green bars can be removed with xml editing.
the white bg of the "auto-rotate switch" is a .9.pngs.
all the lettering is in xml/ colors.
the best idea (when i was making these) is to make things outlandish colors, compile and see what it looks like.

Hey thanks for the reply ! I actually looked at the xml and it used a different png . The name was like statusbar_background.png or something like that
. And my theory was correct . Just the top of the image is solid making the background of the toggle buttons solid . And thanks for that think gives me something more to tinker with :-D
Speaking of tinkering , I was messing around with uot and I wanna get the animated background for the notifications . I tried uploading my themes apk but when I tried switching to the uot theme themeChooser said the theme was incorrectly compiled therefore I could not use it . Do you know how I can edit the xml of my theme to give it the animated background ? I uploaded my systemUI and then took it apart to see how it does the animations . And its a series of .png images . But I don't know what modifications are needed to my themes xml to get the animations working . Thanks again for all your help ! You are truly a theme master :-D
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk

I don't have an exact answer. What files are you seeing as part of the animation? Also, often they are controlled by an XML in the drawable folder (not the hdpi one.) I have changed some animations but not am expert. I would search the thread I gave you to see if possible.

[icons]WM 6.5 Black & Blue/Red/Green/Yellow/Orange/Purple/Grey Folder Sets [12/4/09]
Hello all,
Here's my little contribution to the community after having received so much from so many. I've been using these folder icons because I wanted something that went with my phone and I couldn't stand the default yellow ones.
If anyone wants something added to the set I'd be more than happy to do so, especially if they supply the icon to go on the folder

For Black and Gray you can download them here.
For Black and Orange you can download them here.
For Black and Purple you can download them here.
For Black and Yellow you can download them here.
If you'd like to mix and match to add some color coding to your start menu hierarchy, you can just download them all!
How-To
I recommend using one of several icon changing apps available at XDA. The one I currently use is JWMD's Icon Changer, and have used and liked Showaco's reSTART too.
CREDITS
The base folder icon came from the HydroPRO Icon Pack, which is floating around all over the net. Here's a link from my site if you just want to d/l it and not do all the searching. I got it from Vista Icons and it was written by mediaDesign at DeviantArt
Many of the other images I put on top of the folders are from the Alpha Dista Icon Pack, also floating around all over the net. Here's a quick link for that too. I got this from Vista Icons as well. It was written by Danial Flaco at Deviant Art.
The rest of the images were taken from various logos on the web, images I've come across, and stock WM 6.5 / ATT Tilt 2 icons.
Obviously, I make no claim to the original artwork and do not request any kind of credit (I only super-imposed the images I liked, after all) and I place no limits on what you do with this set. Feel free to use, distribute, alter, etc. etc. I'd suggest that if you are looking to sell any of it that you contact the artists listed above first

Hi wokwitme
In WM6.5 use reSTART by Showaco to reassign icons to folders. In this case image files must be placed in:
\Program Files\reSTART\icons\
In WM6.1 you need to convert icons into .ico files and then into a .dll library. once in a .dll library you place a link in the folder you wish to assign an icon to called icon.lnk. The shortcut of the icon.lnk file must point to the .dll library and the index number of the icon you want to be displayed.
There are better WM6.1 tutorials on the forum.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Hi eknutson
I have nade an icon set of my own which I was on the point of releasing.
Unless they're copyrighted I'm going to use your blank folders as a template to make some more icons. Don't worry, I always attribute work I use.
If you'd like to support this, it would be great if you could send me a higher resolution source file. If you want a preview of what I plan to release please let me know & I'll PM it over to you.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me or what you're asking for here... The icons just go in a folder on the device of your choosing. I use "\My Documents\My Icons" for convenience.
To apply the icons for you would be very tough, a lot of people have their own layouts and organizations to folder structure. Unless you have the exact layout I have, automatically applying them wont work.
Did this address your question? Let me know, I'm happy to help any way I can

Downloading... Very nice, thank you
Looks great, well done my friend and keep them coming!
Wow, very great. I like this Theme.
I try it and it's very great.
Is it possible to do this in white?
Very nice!
Love!
Good also for 2.8?
The problem with making a white theme is that the fonts are in white too so they won't show up. I'm not sure yet how to change the font colour.
This only works on 2.9. I started working on it when 2.8 was out, but had to restart for 2.9. I threw away the 2.8 version, sorry!
Might be good for 2.8, I will try.
Uh, the Fonts. Okay.
And the Navbars on Bottom and Top only? Does that work?
I think for white Hero every widgets etc in Black, but this Both bars in White...?
Any way you can get this to work with MoDaCo's 1.1 rom for the Sprint Hero? Thanks.
Formel what do you mean by navbars? Like the status bar at the top and the phone button at the bottom? There's still the fonts problem, I'm not sure how to get around it.. Maybe someone can enlighten me?
Formel please can you post this theme on your German forum?
I can make a CDMA version soon, just need some free time and I'll make it.
Yes, I mean the status Bar on Top and the three Buttons on bottom.
I've found yesterday in market a Theme for GDE Home replacement in White.
I think I've seen here a theme with white status bar.
Suddenly, i've forgotten to make a new thread at Handy-FAQ.de. Thank you for reminding.
Now, I did:

Cool thanks for posting it up dude! I'll try and look into the white theme a little more as I'd like it too
would you be so kind to share some of your knowledge?
i would like to have the transparent background for the notification pulldown, aswell as the bottom bar with the "mold" in it, but i would like to have it with the stock colors. if you could tip me off witch apk i should look in, and maybe even what files to replace that would be super awesome! pretty please...
Sure - The background for the notification pulldown is called status_bar_background.png and can be found in \res\drawable-480x320\ in framework-res.apk
The bottom bar mold, do u mean the 2-tone effect? Doesn't the stock rom already have that effect in stock colours though? The bottom bar stuff is in \res\drawable-port-480x320\ in Rosie.apk anyway.
Give me a shout if you need anything else!

Yeah looks very nice! But as it's in GDE it might be easier to change the fonts for that. I will start looking into changing the fonts, I'm pretty sure it's possible in Sense.

thanks for that quick answer! i will dig into that tonight, no time to do it at work...
what i meant with the bottombar see attachment. as long as i know where to look i think i can find it.
just for my curiosity/clarification: all you do to create a theme is extracting the apk, alter the image files in it, compress & resign and install? or is there more to it, like altering xml files (which i can not open as they are compiled?) just that i'm on the right track here...
Haha ok I get you know, I thought you were talking about mould Yes you can definitely turn that bar back to grey. I can do it for you if you get stuck. Now I know that's the bit you mean, I think that's in the same folder as the background transparency, \res\drawable-480x320\ in framework-res.apk. I'm not at my dev computer right now so I can't be totally sure, but if you can't find it let me know and I'll have another look.
Yes you're on the right track, that should work fine. It can get a bit confusing but if you keep all your files organised you should be fine.
I didn't alter any xml files to make my theme, so just leave those alone and replace the .png files.

[ROM][Dark Themed open eclair 1.2.1]

Hey all, I created a dark themed version of open eclair 1.2.1 baconweave.
This is a full rom so you will need to do a full wipe before flashing.
I created this by pulling some icons from Xrom and editing the classes.dex file.
I did not build this rom so thanks to the open eclair team for an excellent 2.1 rom and I would also like to thank Justanothercrowd for the icons i pulled from his rom.
As this is my first shot at themeing I only changed the framework-res.apk and services.jar. So, this is not a full theme.
If you are already running open eclair 1.2.1 an easy way to apply my changes would be to extract the framework-res.apk and services.jar from my zip and adb push them to the appropriate locations on your mobile.
I will most likely not be updating this as it suits my needs.
I made a couple other changes to this rom.
-removed gallery3d.apk
-fixed bluetooth issue when pairing both handsfree and media audio.
As always I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device....

The only real editing I did was to change the text color to white. The rest was simply replacing the existing PNG's with the ones I pulled from justanothercrowd's Xrom dark ROM.
An easy way to see what PNG's are what is to extract them from the framework-res.apk and view them as thumbnails. I can't remember what other files I edited. When I get home I can retrace my steps and give more info later.
yeah I mean I can do that too. But most of the time when I try to make all the png's on the notification bar black, they just pop up as black squares on a white surface =/
EDIT: I think I found out how. the name of the png that changes the notification bar color is activity_title_bar.9.png right?

wrong info he gave you. the tabs he showed you and that you are looking for are known as status_bar_item_background_normal.9, status_bar_item_background_focused.9, and status_bar_item_background_pressed.9.
the activity_title_bar.9, which he thought was the correct png, is actually where it reads the words "Ongoing" and "Notifications" which is the activity_title_bar.9
anyway, hope that helps clarify things for you guys .
Oh ok thanks man almost got everything confused lol

Bug report: the pop-up letters on the keyboard don't show. They are the same white as the pop-up background. Dtachd says it probably and xml edit somewhere, or you could change the pop-up background color
Where does one acquire that background? I love it.
You are the man!
Thanks brother.
If you wanted to add an accurate battery mod to this, I just did the images for it in Photoshop the other day. They have the exact AOSP style, so no number in the image, but it's accurate down to the pixel (so there's a change every 3 or 4 percent). You can use it if you want.
Note: Not a flashable zip, just a regular zip with images in them.
A numbered battery % would be great

Thanks for this. Awesome.
Nice theme Is there anyway to get rid of the new GPS icon that comes with DJ05? Only thing that looks out of place in the theme, and it's annoying to have an extra icon in the notification bar that is useless.
The only bug I've noticed so far is this -- the inactive upload/download 1x status icon is still from TouchWiz. The active 1x icon, however, is AOSP (not pictured).:

i did find a way to remove it but it will need a invisible image. you won't see it in the status bar but its still there. Falcyn thanks for posting that, i will look for the problem and fix it. I found another TouchWiz element. I could only find it in ROM Manager though. If you're selecting a check box in the popup, its blue rather than the grey or yellow other places. Not sure if it can be fixed or not as this was the only place I've seen it so far. See the attached image.

Does anybody use PNGOptimizer when creating themes?

I'm not a themer, but I'm a designer and I do a lot of Android UI design which includes slicing the images and making 9patches. In my workflow I always use PNGOptimizer to remove unneeded information from png files. I use PNGOptimizer which I find very usefull and easy to use.
I opened some of themes and almost every one of the were not optimized. I took the PNGOptimizer and cleaned all pngs and on theme that is 8.1MBs in size I have gained 0.7MBs in size. This is not only the filesize gain, but the theme is acting pretty much faster (by observing).

The app is pretty much straight forward, just drag and drop the png files, and it will optimize them in batch. It will give you the log, where you can see how many %s have you gained.
There is a settings view by right clicking on a window where you can set the desired cleaning process.
This app is Windows only, and it's free

I'm sure there are similar apps for OSX and Linux, but I haven't tested them as I don't use these OSs.
I just wanted to share the tool with you guys, and if I posted in wrong thread, I'm really sorry, and please move my thread to the appropriate one

I dislike when people use PNGOptimizer. I've seen a lot of people using it on MIUI lockscreens, and some themes (ZDune's MIUI for CM7, for example) and it makes them incredibly hard to edit, because it changes the PNG from RGB to index color mode. When you open the PNG in photoshop, it has a big thick black border around it, loses gradient transparencies, etc. I tried to edit a theme for my sister to make it all pink but found it impossible to do because all the PNGs were in index color mode. Oh well.

You can always convert them back to 32-bit.

paint.net is a free image editor which can do the conversion to rgb 32-bit if you want (and opens the files correctly, without the black border)

Thats true, I've heard that. However, Doesn't it save them with a non-transparent background? And even if it does save with a transparent background, batch editing a ton of images from a theme would take forever, having to open each with paint.net and saving them before I can edit with photoshop. I can't imagine doing that with 200+ png's.
Batch processing is your friend.
