Since u r flashing the zip thru clockwork recovery, and u most likely rooted to get that far yes... however if u r one of few who managed to install a custom recovery but did not root then I suppose u would not have to have root.

just the apk will do u no good, because of a few reasons, first is that it needs to be a system app, which without root u can not install it to the system/app location , and even if u got it to install without root it still will not work because it requires the libs for it to work, the app itself can not decode hand writing to text without them.
And just fyi a zip that u flash yo install any kind of app contains the apk, all u need to do is open the zip and u will see the app
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I did see the apk. I was just unsure on how to root my Xoom. Even though I've extensively on the subject, I still find it a little intimidating, I was hoping there was a "One Click Root" program.

I have rooted a few devices in my time a xoom and a Samsung moment. So my question is what is the best way to root this phone? with the xoom I had to hook it up to the computer and run the sdk the moment was done with the handy updater with a new file loaded into it. I just havent seen a clear cut way to do it here theres some of the one clicks which honestly scare me. But beyond that?
This is your best way. Designed from the ground up and works flawlessly. Credit to mtmichaelson and all the guys he worked with to get this going.

It does work well, I have not found a list of lost functionality but there may be one. The one loss I know of is the 4Ghotshot, tether continues to work however.
The instructions in the linked thread are a little vague.
How Do I Root and Install CWM?:
1) Download zip and extract
2) Install drivers if not already installed
3) Click Root&RecoveryAIO.bat
4) Select what you would like to do

Where do you get the drivers and when it says click Root&RecoveryAIO.bat, is that an application like One Click or do you need to somehow install it?

You need the lg drivers for the revolution. Once you do that, plug the phone into the usb and select internet connection with usb debugging on and then simply follow the above steps. This is my first android phone and it was so easy thanks to MT for making it so easy.

There should be a folder inside of the zip labeled drivers. Check in there and run one of those. I downloaded them from the site posted earlier and put them in the zip.

Oh, and I tried a while ago to view all devices and I can see p4, can I use that?
Edit: I think why rom manager doesn't display p4 on my device is because it detects it as p7500 and not p4. I could be wrong.

It should be detecting both gt-p7500 and p7500 as the p4 now. Give it a go.
I installed CWM 5.xx on my P4 (GT P7500) via Odin and since then I have flashed and updated through the successive updates until the current one 6.0.3.0. I have never had a problem with it, not once did Odin failed me. Furthermore, it is not a requisite that you must install Rom Manager before you can install CWM Recovery. I do not have Rom Manager installed on my device. If Rom Manager is not working for you, why don't you spend a little time to master the use of Odin, you will save yourself a ton of trouble, stress and time.
Cheers!

As a matter of fact I read through the entire thread before I posted my reply. Can't remember seeing 'bursted cable' being the reason you prefer not to use odin otherwise I would have suggested mobile odin, even though I have not used it so far; or that you changed your cable. Following your elaboration, I now understand. If any part of my post, the language or manner of putting across my suggestions offended you in anyway, kindly forgive me as I was only trying to be of help and definitely not to offend you.

Thanks for the info about the mobile odin part, I read a post somewhere here saying that mobile odin doesnt flash recoveries, I'll give it a try.
Oh and that flashable zip thing is a great idea, why didn't I think of that before haha. I can do that myself but I think it would be better if someone more experienced could do it. Pulled this from DP4. Not sure if this will be the official bootanimation they go with but for now that's all I got to go on. This is not a flashable zip. So you'll need to copy and paste with a root browser apk to the appropriate location.
For those of you who don't know its in::::
system/media
1.----just rename the one that's there by adding " .BBB" all that does is make it unrecognizable by the system so it doesn't use it but if something goes wrong or you just want to change back its there to rename back to the original name.
2.----copy and paste this zip file from wherever you downloaded it, to system/media
3.----change permissions to rw-r--r--
4.----click the thanks button here.
5.----click your buddies thanks button. No not his,,,,hers.
6.----reboot and stare in amazement. Or however you slow motion stare at something.

@mattwheat someone made a video on the installation process using your guide: https://youtu.be/TSYa2C9aldc

It's not a boot animation, it's the new updating system animation to replace the old Android.

So basically if you're rooted you won't ever see it since you have to update via fastbooting factory images anyway.

Somewhat, yes. You can be rooted and still have stock recovery(why, I'll never know)

Can't you still take an OTA if you hide root and flash stock recovery?

All it requires is stock recovery, other devices may need removal of root

You welcome Google doesn't mind this stuff, unless it fully. They allow bootloader unlock and a bit of root. Check their support.

Can anyone tell me why I can't change permissions of the bootanimation.zip? I've used other boot logos on other devices and know how to change permissions but it won't let me do it here. Thanks
Feel embarrassed to ask but... How does one download this file on mobile? When I open the link it displays the file name, if I click the download icon it offers to open with Google Drive, and then immediately with ES Zip Explorer or FX.
Chrome

When I tap the download link in chrome it asks if I want to open with drive or with chrome. I choose chrome and bam, it's in my download folder.
