Everytime i placed my hand on the back cover, it felt really hot. Is this normal ?
I'm currently running HoliRaidier 1.75 rom.
The phone does tend to heat up quite a bit, especially when running CPU intensive tasks.
You should use a task manager to monitor what apps are running, and terminate anything unnecessary.
Thanks - I'll try to do that.

Never had this problem. Check to see if you have an app that's running rogue or something.

Did you check to be sure the kernel you're using matches your ROM?
When you say 'data connection,' I'm guessing you mean mobile data connection and not wi-fi. If it is wi-fi with the problem, try re-copying the wi-fi module for your kernel over to /system/lib/modules
Yes - I do meant the 'mobile data'. When I used a custom rom, then I got the data just fine. However when I used the ATT based rom - It doesn't appear to get any connection. I don't know why, and if I would know how to set or change the custom APN would be helpful.

Edit: Yes I always flash the kernel before install new ROM from the same dev.
I have also realized that it does get hot, and with the new holliraider 1.7 i realized that the battery dies faster.
I've had my Vivid for about three weeks now, and it runs ice cold. It's stock, with the addition of about twelve new apps, that's it.

Latest Cyanogenmod nightly number 97 (10/3/2010) has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch if you are running it or a newer one.
Back Story
Long story short, the Chinese group Miui mananged to get / build (not really sure) a new Radio Interface Layer for our HTC devices... I pulled this file out of the Nexus one build that they released and it works perfectly. Link to the Nexus1 version
Over in the Nexus one forum a few people have questioned where this Chinese group got some of the files they're using, as they're really bleeding edge (at least thats what they say in the N1 forum). This newer / different RIL file seems to fix the issues we're facing with random phantom reboots while wifi is on. Also included in this is the issue where the signal bars show an "x" for a second or two after connecting to a wifi hotspot. Also fixed are issues where the radio signal drops before / after receiving a call that plagues AOSP builds (ruby and CM for sure).
Cyanogenmod 6.xx
This works on the 6.xx versions as well as the Nightlies.
NOTICE: As of Oct 2nd this has been "committed" so I assume the nightly that comes out this evening will have the fix built in. Check it out
Latest nightly number 97 has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch.
Ruby 1.1.1
This works for Ruby. If you are wanting the BT Media Streaming audio fix as well, please see this thread. They are two separate installs.
Shadowrom
It has been confirmed that this also works for Shadowrom.
Bugs
I honestly don't know of any yet... but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Only a handful of us have been testing this thing out on the inc so far. Figured more people might want to check it out.
Credit
I take no credit for the fix. The Miui group built/got it(not sure which), I simply happened to be playing around with some files and noticed the side effects. Thanks again to Jermaine for letting me know more about the rom (and the fact that they weren't plagued by our reboot issues) in the first place so I could start digging...
Of course thanks go out to the entire ruby and cyanogenmod teams, without them we wouldn't have these fun roms. Lastly, IncredibleDoes for doing the Inc port of miui that opened our eyes to it.
Installation
- Download the file and place it on your SD card.
- Load up Rom Manager and hit "Install rom from SD card," select the file.
- I'd probably make a nandroid backup if you haven't recently just in case... no wipe has been needed.
Disclaimer
If this messes up your phone, not my fault Was tested by about 30 people so far, and no issues that we've seen. Please make a nandoid backup just in case.
THIS IS FOR AOSP roms listed above ONLY. Please do NOT install it on any sense based roms.

Not that I can tell... so far the mere fact that the wifi isn't causing reboots anymore is the main reason I'm putting this out there...

I really dont believe its the wifi. Its when the 3g turns on or off when the issues happen, which is when you leave or enter a wifi area. I turned 3g off and didnt use it for 2 days with wifi on the whole time with no reboots. I've have the lockup with just 3g on as others have noted. Also I believe that the lockups and the reboots are a separate issue. I have yet to see where any dev said it was the wifi directly, and with the known issues of 3g+froyo it points to 3g not wifi.
So, if you turn wifi off and are in a good 3g area then you will unlikely lose 3g much if at all, but if you have signal issues then the reboots still exist.
If we are going to find out what the problem is we need to setup test groups.
1 - no wifi, no 3g
2 - no wifi, 3g on
3 - wifi on, no 3g
4 - wifi on, 3g on
Make sure everyone is using the same rom/radio.

That's a possibility, but I think I'm in a good 3G area, and the majority of my movements are in a pretty small geographic area. I'll get reboots when my phone is just sitting on a table or in my pocket though in an area w/ strong signal.

I think what we'd really need is for the testers to check all 4 combinations. There's too much geographic variance to have a bunch of different people testing these combinations unless some lived very close to each other.

To be honest i wouldn't know. I don't like AOSP roms on the Galaxy S phones. To be honest haven't been on CM7 since nightly was 2.3.3 (been a while). But from my experience Native roms work better for longer periods of times. But I9000 ports work well enough. I also like Audience chip support.

I believe it is, but your kernel might have to change. I do know both CM7 and MIUI have a few kernels to chose from, some might be limited to a specific bootloader. Again I could be wrong.

There is no wrong way to close an App/Game.
It's the developer of the app that causes the problem.

True multitasking has been built into Android (similar to Linux, which it is based) from day one. Here to say it, but that would be a longshot. Best bet would be to become more scrupulous on what apps you download and more critical of the makers when their programs go rogue. Plus turning background data off in settings can help. Fyi.
Note: I don't want you to feel as if I'm being overly critical or a douche here, just realistic with what we have and what we are dealing with.

I hear ya, I know its wishful thinking. I just wish android was as efficient as iOS. Android having Backgrounding from the start was a big perk, but I gotta hand to apple for seeing how inefficient it was and hold off until they found a better solution. Android needs to grab the bull by the horns and convert to that solution.

I've noticed my phone only charging at around 70mah when simply on the home screen (charges very fast when screen is off/sleep, 800+mah). I am using battery monitor widget to see the current draw. Using battery doctor, it tells me Maps is using 99% of the battery being consumed, even after testing it out playing Temple Run 2 for 20 minutes on max screen brightness. Is anyone else having this issue? Any known solutions? I even tried disabling GPS and latitude.

Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app
I have tried that. But I would like to use my GPS as it has a lot of uses with applications. That still doesn't explain having such a high current draw enough to only charge at only 70mah even while in use. Any phone should be able to charge significantly faster than the battery drains (aside from USB charging). Something is putting a ton of unwanted load on while the phone is not sleeping. The phone sleeps VERY well in the sense of conserving power (-10mAh)
Can someone download battery doctor and see if Maps is also very high on their list? It could also be a false reading on the apps end. I'm looking at my phone right now on max brightness and it shows it's discharging at -304mAh, which is acceptable. I'm more concerned about the charging rate being horrible while the phone is awake. Something might be really making the processor do unnecessary work.
I have the same percentage for maps as well....

I use GSAM. I used to have issues with maps doing that, and forgot how I fixed it. I wish they would make Google maps not suck. So many freaking wakelocks.

It's kind of sad that they took "Screen" out of the list of power consuming things as that is truly the most common power consuming factor. I'm really not impressed with this release of Sense. I WANT MORE PANELS!! lol I went from 7 panels from the Evo 3D to 5 panels including blinkfeed which I don't use. Sooo lamee
Anyway, the phone is new so I'm sure there will be updates fixing a ton of issues since they kind of rushed the release after the initial delay. I'm betting a bunch of issues escaped unfixed because of that. Would anyone suggest a ROM to potentially fix my issue and improve everything as a whole?

That app is stock sense. Settings > power > usage. I would say definitely ROM it. More customization possibilities and it will only get better. The ROMs that are out now are completely stable and mildly tweaked compared to what they will be in a month or so. Also I had slow charging for my first few cycles and it seems to have gotten much better. At least on par with my wife's evo lte.

I'm leaning towards the Viper ROM. Any other suggestions or possibly better ROMs?
I believe everything gets wiped when the ROM is flashed, correct? I already have TWRP installed.
The generic answer is to try a few different ones and see what works best for you. For me, I'm using viper as my daily. But who knows what I'll be using tomorrow.... I'm a flashaholic. There's a superwipe posted in these forums that will wipe everything for you but in essence it formats system, data, cache, and dalvik. Any time you jump to a different ROM you will want to wipe everything. Keep in mind a factory reset is not the same thing as a full wipe as it does not wipe system files.

So every time you flash another ROM, what do you do to recover all your data, apps, game progress, etc.
I just made a backup of everything with my stock ROM using TWRP.
Personally I use titanium backup.... But it can cause issues as can any app that transfers data between ROMs. you can actually import data from your nandroid by using titanium.... Or just restore the data partition from your nandroid from within twrp. No matter what you may run into issues and if that's the case just start over for the best results.
I apologize ahead of time if this makes no sense.... Exhaustion at work is setting in.

Just take your time between selecting things and use the volume and power buttons instead of the touchscreen. It will install eventually

k thanks
You have to try..
I tried some rom, and all are good, custom kernel are *-*!
On my Galaxy S3, I tried so many ROMs but I always went back to either stock or Android Revolution HD. I now have the One and I use Android Revolution HD 10.2 which is great, but I haven't tried any other custom ROMs, to be honest with you. I may give Trickdroid a shot since it seems very popular here, but I'll probably go back to ARHD eventually since I love how stock, stable and fast it is, and most importantly battery life is great.
well ive used the hd 10.2 today and seemed ok i listened to music streamed music from dropbox and listened to tunein radio today and battery life seemed good and also didnt get as hot as the other roms ive tried for what i use it for do i really need 4 cores active all the time could i not just have 2 active mostly and 4 when needed would this help the temperture of the phone and save even more battery life ?
I am not sure the kernel supports that. I know that the Galaxy S4's octa-core or whatever has that feature, but I am not sure about the One. Perhaps it does as well.

Use stock. It's so stable I have no words for it and you don't have to mess with it too . So what do you say?

with pretty much every rom it will be hotter at first but after a few days it will cool down. and if you turn on power saver it will limit the cpu and other things if you set it to which will help with temp and battery
Use greenify for better battery. Set it where it hybernates all apps when their not being used. Battery life is great without it but with it... It's phenominal.
