[Q] Can't connect to 850 AT ALL - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody I'm having a bit of a problem with my SGS i9000, international version. I'm currently running CM7 with the UGJL2 modem.
I recently signed up for a data plan. My carrier is Movistar Chile.
Problem is, I can't connect at all. Not even on EDGE. I have checked the APN settings and they're OK.
I have also tried changing the settings in Service Mode to no avail. When I choose any other setting than GSM 1900, I don't get any service.
Also tried changing some settings in Testing. Nothing.
Tried flashing many modems, most of them with 850 enabled, no good.
Any ideas?

I might suggest to flash a different modem or one of the radio 850mhz files found on this site.

What do you mean by "radio 850mhz files"?

I can't recall if I tried that modem. Will flash and check. Thanks for your responses!
EDIT: flashed KC3, no good. There's no way it'll connect with 850, just 1900. Tried changing settings in Service Mode, nothing.
Maybe flashing another ROM?

Try this for 850mhz
I am on Telstra in Aussie and we use the 850Mhz, and when I upgraded ROMS I had to sort out the same issue you are having. I found a Telstra modem, opened a modem file, swapped my modem into it and put it into my phone. The in recovery opened the file an it all worked. Not sure if that is the correct way, but it works for me and gives me both 850 and 2100 for Telstra.

Change your rom to jvu, its sweet, and try to use the modem that was in your stock rom from chile
Im using simplicity + semaphore+ UGKG3 modem

Thanks for the reply. Sadly, the phone was imported all way from England... not the smartest thing to do...
So tecnically there is no stock Rom for the I9000 from Movistar Chile.
However, now that you mention it, Movistar used to sell the I9000B here, and I'm not sure if I could grab the modem file from a I9000B from Chile (if I happen to find one) and flash it. Are I9000 and I9000B modems compatible?
EDIT: found out something weird. I actually got a hold of a SGS2, factory unlocked, and swapped the SIM cards. In the SGS2, the APN settings from Movistar Chile are picked up automatically (preconfigured?), thought there is still no connection when Data is enabled. This (APN settings preconfigured) DOES NOT happen on the SGS1, as if there weren't any settings predefined. I have to put them manually. Why...?
With the other SIM card (Entel Chile), both phones set the APN automatically and connect to the data plan without issue.
Does this mean there's a phone issue AND a carrier issue?
I also forgot to mention that I got rid of CM7 and flashed the latest Darky's Rom, JVK modem, 850 enabled as far as I know.

The apn issue is from the preloaded apns from the rom you uses, it happened to me no other than simplicity.
The letter b on i9000 means the region, from example im in mexico and i have a i9000t that its for latinamerica, the i9000 alone its erupean and MAY BOT HAVE 850mhz antenna
Do you had 3g before the data plan weon? Hehehe

I have flashed Captivate modems on the SGS and they work. Could I9000B modems also be compatible?

It should have 850MHz, since that's supposedly the frequency Movistar uses here...
Still trying to figure out what to do

Have you tried to make sure it is enabled in the network mode/cell info/power info menu
in your dialer: *#0011#
and make sure under all the options 850 is enabled

Thanks for the reply, but I already tried that, didn't work SGS doesn't support 850mhz out of the box, which is why I flashed another modem in the first place.

Ok there's a cm7 radio zip it worked for me when I was on it ill find the link and post soon.

[Q] Darky's Rom 8.0 - Issues with weak signal

I recently updated to Darky's Rom, 8.0, wipe edition, and although I really like how fast it is, and the battery life seems ok, I've noticed a strange issue.
I'm on Rogers in Canada, with a Bell Galaxy S Vibrant (i9000m) so it only gets UMTS band 1900.
While on the stock Samsung firmware, I'm often in an area where I get say 1-3 bars, but it seems to work fine.
On Darky's rom, it's constantly going from the 1-3 bars to no signal
In areas with good-excellent signal, it works flawlessly.
I'm guessing this is a bug with the modem he is using in this rom?
Any ideas anyone?
The modem he uses is the latest one XXJPY. Only thing I can suggest is try one of Doc's ROM's and choose the modem you had before you installed Darky's ROM and see if that affects performance. Some modems perform better for others purely because of their location (Normally Europe tbh mate). If you see better signal from a different modem on Doc's though and its a real problem to use Darky's, just make as much of a similar version or maybe one you actually prefer in his kitchen and install R64's theme ontop. Won't be much different tbh mate
Instead of flashing another rom why don't you just try flashing a new modem, in the JL2 thread found in the general section theres a JL2 modem file thats flashable with clockwork. Try just flashing the modem to see if it helps you out.

I may give that a whirl, at least to try it. It seems the general consensus is that the GPS does not work anywhere near as well with this as with the one Darky uses, but I definetly want to compare, so it's good. Thanks

That's pretty neat, I hadn't seen that before
I'm running darky's 8.0 with a jl2 modem. Just find a modem that is flashable via cwm and flash that on top look in one of my recent posts, there is one in there. Then all you need to do is manually add your access point name after you flash the modem and you should be good.

JL2 Modem with 8.0
I'm running darky's 8.0 with a jl2 modem and the signal and GPS functions amazingly. I'm on Fido (Rogers Network) and highly recommend flashing the JL2 modem to fix your issue.
there you go!
Just flash with CWM
thanks guys, i'll give it a try.
btw I did some more investigation by going through the band selection.
Rogers, who I use, uses GSM (EDGE) on 850mhz and 1900mhz, and UMTS (3G) on 850mhz and 1900mhz
The i9000m supports GSM (EDGE) on 850mhz and 1900mhz, and UMTS (3G) on 1900mhz
Using Darky's rom, GSM 1900mhz and UMTS 1900mhz are working. GSM 850mhz is NOT working, hence when I'm in an area with poor 3g signal, it is dropping to EDGE, and since I'm not getting the 850mhz GSM band, I'm dependent on the 1900mhz GSM band, which is iffy in this area
So I installed the JL2 modem, and sure enough 850mhz is BACK!
Woot! Thanks people
I'll do some tests with the GPS later and see if that is still working correctly.

Great to hear! Enjoy this awesome ROM and if you haven't already, please consider donating as Darky has put a lot of work into the creation of the ROM.
no issues at all since switching back to JL2 modem, looks like this is a must for Rogers users.
Thanks again all.

Hello everyone!
Im from Malaysia. I flashed my GT-I9000 about with Darky ROM 10.2 final which is based on JVQ ROM (Gingerbread 2.3.4) about a week ago. Everything else is great except for the poor signal strength. is your phone the north american i9000m or the international? international phones have no 850 support. any bell modem (jl2, kc1, etc) will automatically enable 850.
go into the band selection, then wcdma, then pick 850 only. if the phone switches to the 850 band then your good, just go back in and pick automatic

It's still an i9000m, hardware wise, so you should try reflashing the modem. There is no reason kc1 shouldn't work on your device
Wait wait wait. Isn't the international version missing the hardware support for 850? If it's missing the hardware it's not going to matter what modem you use! That's your problem.
And it is not true at all that you cannot get 850 on a european modem. I have an i9000m, and have used several european modems (jvk, jvb, etc) with 850. A few steps are required to enable it, that's all. Search and you'll find them.

So did you try flashing the modem or complete rom again?
You could try flashing back to UGJL2 froyo again, then reflash Gingerbread. Kinda strange you can't enable wcdma850 in the combi menu. Did you confirm in the about phone settings that kc1 is the baseband?

I am going to try to flash to kc1 entirely. I can enable the 850 band, I just can't connect to the 850 band network.
I guess this is a provider problem. I finally broke down and phoned our incompetant technical support and they said they have had some problems with the KC1 update on the 850 band, now I have to use an inferior JL2 to work on our 850 band.

850Mhz 3G and Overcome

Hi guys
I'm running a Telstra (australia telco) tab on Overcome 1.4.5 custom ROM.
This carrier has an 850Mhz 3G network just like AT&T or Rogers over in N America.
I am unable to connect 850Mhz in HSDPA, only in GSM.
I have tried both JMF modem and stock Telstra modem (i.e. stock from carrier), same issue. If I force the 'WCDMA' setting I cannot see the 850 network at all.
Anyone else running Overcome and using 850Mhz 3G? Help appreciated
i have the same tab, and im on overcome 1.4.5 still, grab the modem.bin from rotohammers thread, by memory its the i9000 modem, ive been using that and its been working perfectly.
cool, and you're on NextG?
BTW I've tried locking it to 850Mhz via @#2263#, and it is still choosing the 2100 network (3Telstra) lol. A guy on whirlpool forum is telling me its a random bug, heard anything about that?
You can get a CWM flashable bell modem at the first post of the overcome thread.
yeah I'm trying that tonight (the JMK modem) cheers @ work now don't have the cable with me...
FWIW the jk3 (typoed jmk above) modem did the trick.
It wasn't included in the overcome 1.4.5 thread but IS on the 1.6 threads, go figure
not sure why the stock carrier modem didn't work? but not fussed

Best Modem for Bell i9000m and ICS?

My phone is the i9000m Bell and I am on TeamHacksung v.14 and wondering what is the best modem to use?
Right now I am using UGKG3. It works but its not very strong for signal.
I used UCKG3 and it's fine on 850Mhz which is what Bell uses. To check you're on 850 dial *#*#0011#*#*
I can't post links but google 850 i9000 for instructions on how to add the 850 band if your phone isn't connected as 850 CDMA
when I do that dial this is what I get
UMTS: HOME(CS+PS)
RRC State: IDLE
WCDMA 850 band 5
FREQ DL: 1087
FREQ UL: 862
CELL_ID:*****
PSC:7a
RSCP:-101,ECIO:-10
Well you are on 850Mhz but your signal does seem low, maybe a low signal area?
If you poke around in this thread you can try other 850Mhz modems, some might work better in your location. Finding the best modem for your carrier/location seems to be a lot of trial and error
thanks rax22... I will check around.
I tried this test and it says:

FREQ DL: 587
FREQ UL: 187
CELL_ID:0x_______
LAC: 0x2936

RSCP: -110. ECIO:-14
I was unaware that flashing a different modem may improve my reception/service, I thought it was a sort of works-or-not thing. If anyone would care to help as well that would be great
(sorry to OP, don't mean to steal thread, only gain help from it as well)
Are these two showing the signal strength?
RSCP: -110. ECIO:-14
If so what do they mean and should they be higher or lower for better signal. I have been trying lots of different modems and trying to figure out what works better for me.
thanks.
You can't use anything other than 850/1900 on Bell. 850 is for downstream, and 1900 is for upstream. KG3 is the only radio that is known to work with Bell.
I tried the JVT modem today and it worked. Ran a speed test with wifi off and got some decent results. I did go back to KG3 though.
Can I ask exactly which KG3 modem file you are using? There seems to be a few different ones floating around with different names and file sizes.

[Q] Modem question

Hi All..
I have been having some peculiar problems regarding modems and was hoping someone could share some insight on it.. I get my modems here: http://soggycashew.weebly.com/index.html , and currently am on MIUI, but the same problem that I am facing persists with CM7, ICS, or any I9000/I897 roms too.
First off, I'm from Malaysia and using Celcom, thus these bands are used:
3g: WCDMA-2100
2g: GSM-900
The problem that im facing is, whenever I flash a modem that doesn't have 3g 850mhz by default, I break my 2g.
Something like this: Flash a modem with 850mhz by default (ones that i tried: UGKG3,BVJJW2,UGKC1,UGJK4), everything works fine.
Flash modems that don't have 850mhz by default (ones that i tried: ZSJPG, DXJV9, ZSJV6), 3g works fine (wcdma 2100) but 2g is broken and if i force it to "2g ONLY" i get emergency calls only. Checking the service menu, i realise that it is getting a signal from another carrier using the gsm-1800 band, but doesn't get anything from home network on gsm-900 band.
Any idea why and how to overcome this?
Hmm... Use one of the modems that work for you, and the problem is solved!

Actually the modem that is used here officially for the i9000 is DXJV9 and already available and is one of the modems that I tried but is giving me the problem..
I'm using BVJJW2 for now, somehow UGKG3 heats up my phone very fast.
I have similar problem.
My cappy can use only 2G network but not 3G.
I am running on Doc's Master ICS V3.1 with its default baseband.
Is there any one facing the same problem ?
Please advise.
