While I am not thrilled with the stock ROM, I do miss the WIFI HotSpot I was able to enable on my Tilt2. This allows me to use a tablet rather than a smartphone screen. Would someone out here please provide a simple workaround for this one feature. I'm willing to donate as well. While I was very comfortable with the Windows Mobile altering, I am android stupid, yet willing to learn.
This phone is really dragging without it.
Thanks.
You're not going to find much unless you switch to a custom ROM. The ATT stock ROM is designed to neuter tethering unless you have it on your plan; custom ROMs don't have that check built in.
Before you ask "how do I ____", go read the stickied superguide in the development forum and follow the instructions to the letter.
I understand your reply, here's what is puzzling me though. If I sign up with AT&T and have to toss my unlimited plan in the process, how do they enable the wifi hotspot option? OTA? If so, perhaps someone who has this option enabled would share their script with a Chef to see what is enabled and how? It has to be something on the device, not the server or tower with AT&T.
If you still have the tilt2, just put the vivid Sim card in the tilt.
The easiest solution is to just use a custom ROM, plain and simple.
I am using DarkRaider's custom ROM, and I still am coming up with an error - something about there being a "temporary network problem", and it won't let me enable the WiFi hotspot.
I'm not with AT&T, and WiFI Hotspot worked just fine with my HTC Aria... so now what?

could you tell me what exactly is your set up? i have actually tested that Rom, and i know that with the proper kernel combination you can make tether work,. almost all custom Roms that are base of of holiday, if matched with a good kernel, they are expected to work tether, wifi, ETC.
I've tried it with the following kernels:
- stock
- Holic
- Koz RC2
- Koz Beta 7
... all flashed through the DarkRaider installation process.
I get the above error when trying to use the WiFi Hotspot option built in. I have one APN put into the system, which worked with my HTC Aria using the built-in Hotspot option before...
I read somewhere that you can edit files using an SQL editor, but the post wasn't detailed enough...

i see,. which is interesting of ur set up is that u have actually added an APN setup to that rom... i though that that Rom had its own APN, and they worked pretty good when i tried it,.. anyway.. i am going to flash the rom tonight again and find out exactly how i did it... cuz i have had Tether work for me in that particular room.. and i want to share that with you guys,.
Illuminati Rom has working tether and there is nothing special or any work arounds to do. Just flash it and that's it, everything works. I cannot give you the link, you will have to Google it.

Is it Sense or non-Sense? I'd prefer a Sense ROM.
EDIT: Okay, looked into it a bit more... seems a bit "dated", and in fact I can't find a working link to download it.
I am a bit frustrated, as the DarkRaider ROM feature list says that Hotspot has been fixed... and yet I'm getting this error. I have a feeling it's a setting somewhere I have to edit, but no idea where to start looking without messing up WiFi totally, etc. I use WiFi Hotspot all the time though with my tablet and at work.

It is a Sense Rom and it is far from dated. The last update was a couple of days ago and there were actually 2 updates that day.
I don't know where you looked for it but you can only get it from the dev's website. You will have to register and have at least 10 posts to see the download links.

Make sure your not posting useless post, you will get the ban hammer. I would suggest the mod version, it has some really nice tweaks and you can get it with or with out Google Now.

Just tried it for 20 minutes - found it slow to wake up, still had lots of AT&T apps I'll never use, and it's missing several tweaks the ROMs here have.
But the Hotspot worked.
Hmmm.
EDIT: I'm going back to DarkRaider and I'm going to work harder on getting it to work there. It's a superior ROM.

UPDATE: seems to work fine for most people by just flashing, my phone had different problems.
it does work with this method when having trouble otherwise: wipe, fresh installation of mcr3.1/2, boot and do the setup, flash the clock. a wipe is not mandatory, it has proven to work without a wipe in many cases now. should work on all 1.5 sense roms.
in every case make a nandroid backup before! then flash the zipfile as usual from the recovery menu, no need to delete anything manually before.
who wonders what this is about, from 0:12 in this video. the flipclock was removed by htc in the 2.73 series roms, probably for performance reasons. since (especially) paul and teknologist have done a lot on the performance side it is worth a try IMHO. so far the feedback is good, ppl don't seem to notice an impact on the performance.

animations are always bad to capture in a screenshot. this is the regular 2x4 hero clock widget with the digits flipping over as animation, as it was in the 1.76.x roms. the animation was removed for performance reasons, but since a lot has changed performancewise i think it is worth a try.
i'll see if i can dig up a video. edit: there you go, about 13 seconds in.

what rom are you using? do you experience any performance lags? do all apps work, i think i had problems with connectbot while the clock was installed?
and we still have to wait for long term results, i hope it doesn't drain the battery...
btw, it is still not working for me, dammit!
the latest Modaco rom 3.1, i wasn't getting any lag switching from screen to screen but i did go back to my back up cause it was abit annoying wait a few seconds to know what the time is, i didn't test all my apps lol all i did was surf the inter-web. All i did was to flash it as an update.zip and for me it worked perfectly

i leave that as an exercise to the reader flashed enough today, going to bed now. nandroid is your friend. my bet: won't work. try wiping, flashing the rom, do the initial setup, then flash the clock. and keep us posted

this was taken from a gsm rom, so i wouldn't expect it to work in a cdma rom. i replied to a thread in the cdma section pointing them here, my guess would be that the procress has to be redone with cdma sources. i can't do this without having access to the running rom.

so i was right you could check logcat for errors, but tbh i don't think there is much that can be done, given the closed source nature of the sense framework.

ok, the easiest way to say this: the person who wants to try this needs to hold a cdma hero in his hands. the actual device, you can not do it with just the rom.

ok i have the HTC CDMA Sprint HERO.. and im woundering if there is anything i can do/install on my phone to improve 3G reception at my house... i have ify spots at my house where it just wont hold 3g.. is there like an external antenna i can plug in.. or can i wire one in... ive allready installed the radio update. but it didnt really help.. thanks for your time.. i hope someone can help me..
Try all of the radios, not just the most recent, some are better for some than others.
Also, if you call sprint and complain about splotchy coverage they may give you an AirRave - caveat: you have to have high speed internet for those to work.
well the AirRave thing wont work.. lol the reason why i need my phone in 3g is so i can teather it lol.. but do you happen to have a link for the radios?
and i just flash the radios zip file right? and it will over write the one i have installed now?

Yeah, Read the directions on that website.
Make sure you ONLY EVER get radios from this site OR this sub forum of XDA. This can brick your phone....
They flash a little differently than a rom. After you tell it the update.zip you want to flash, you will see it reboot to a different background image. If it appears stuck after a few minutes, roll your scroll wheel and see if the selection at the top changes. if it does, then its done.... I think... been a while...
Better yet...read the directions.

unless you've found a workaround, I don't believe tethering works over 3G on the Sprint network unless you have an EVO - tethering does work over WiFi with the Hero.

Only comment here if you can contribute and make this work. (what i have provided is the extent of my knowledge)
The apk installs, loads, but will not connect. It gets stuck on 'enabling' and shreads the battery trying.
Perhaps the servers are just not up yet since this is so new..
UPDATE: According to TMo News, T-mobile has stated that they do not support wifi calling yet... so hopefully this app not working is just a result of no server support yet..

Took a look at it and so far its either missing a VPN module or its pointing at settings that we dont have. Right now its looping trying to connect to localhost.
This does ADB install fine, but it doesnt connect if you disable it and try to re-enable it.
Side effect, it was constantly looping trying to connect the service and wasnt very happy about uninstalling when I tried, wouldnt recommend anyone install it unless they have the settings or an idea where we can grab them from
Soon as I get the OTA ill scour for the settings. Soon as I have any updates to it ill tweet/post
Thanks Viral, scepterr says it needs a kernel module and we need source code for that

According to TMO News, the wifi calling is not supported yet as stated by T-Mobile.
“Wi-Fi Calling and tethering Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2. T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers and we’re working to deliver them to G2 users in the future. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

This was one of my theories... that would be an easy and good answer for why it will not connect yet...
Looks like theres no luck on the g2 end either, its still missing some configuration or something.

Something tells me TMo is going to wait, either for the release of the MyTouch HD or they'll release it on a bunch of phones all at once as a way to boost sales before Christmas.
Looks like G2 will have this app soon enough. I can't wait to have it on the vibrant.
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/11/t-mobile-g2-to-get-wi-fi-calling-update-starting-tomorrow/
The reason why this app isn't working is because you need a Wifi calling plan which tmobile is rolling out soon and it requires a data plan of 19.99 or higher which pretty much everyone has because the 200 mb plan has not rolled out yet.
Has anyone gotten the wifi calling G2 OTA update yet? Can you let us know if the wifi calling now works on the G2? Thanks.

I know there isn't an outstanding support for the Cellular South Hero, but I'm having trouble finding ROMs, themes, and such for my phone. Agreed. This way, you get a baseline reading with the phone, with it operating "as it should" with the stock ROM and settings. If it doesn't work stock, then you are going to have a hell of a time trying to get it to work any other way, if at all.
Alright I ruu back. The one wifi speed is the same. and on my other router it is faster.
