What exactly and how do I create a nandroid backup? I keep reading about it but not sure exactly what it is! I did make a backup using the cwm app that comes with chainfires kernel.... Is that a nandroid backup? Any help is greatly appreciated. I just want to have a backup incase i brick like many others have!

The one you reboot into cwm then start? Yep, that's a nandroid backup.
I am not sure about ChainFire's CWM but boot into recovery
Vol Up + Home Button + Power button simultaneously while booting
Select backup from the CWM menu
Select full backup(there might only be one backup option)
Let it backup
You have just done a nandroid!
This is pretty useful as well and describes what it is:

Awesome guys thanks for the quick reply!

How would you describe clean? Like using the 1 click stock odin by just pressing start or master wipe?
I would say a nandroid backup after full wipe, stock rooted.

I will try it tomorro if you can tell me what it wipes. Like is it just the 2gb sd card or the 16gb one too
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
Thanks. I think it would only wipe your data/factory reset in recovery. Are you using clockwork? Should leave sdcard alone. You could use titanium backup to save everything prior to wiping. If you unsure don't reset just on my account.

ive been searching every where on how to do this with out reflashing my rom. i did a nandroid but i updated the recovery so i cant use that it gives me some suggestion to do it via adb. if there is no other way to get it back i guess i will go about it that way but if there is a apk available that will be much more appreciated!

will give it a shot thanks
EDIT: Works great! thank you so much
Glad it's resolved, but I don't see why an updated recovery would preclude you from restoring the nandroid backup. In Clockwork recovery you can go to Advanced Restore and restore only the System partition from the recent backup.

wouldn't the restore overwrite the current recovery in place?

Recovery is not part of the system partition, and in typical nandroid backups it is not even imaged as part of the backup.
Tried link in OP, just goes to Drop Box login.??
That's because I remove the file after a while...

@danger-rat, Thanks for putting it up again. Got it now.
When you do a backup via ClockworkMod recovery, are the efs files included?
e.g. Theoretically would restoring a nandroid backup fix a broken IMEI?
I've searched and found conflicting reports.
Many thanks
push it really would love to know if it would restore it!

it really depends on how you made your nadroid back-up.
there are a couple of options when doing a nandroid back up.
if you select the "ALL" method then it will back up your system files as well as your EFS folder.
go try making a back up to see it for yourself via cwm.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to create a backup, but it seems my recovery is 3e rather than 2e so I can't. From what I've read I need a modified kernel with 2e. Does that mean I need to risk a flash before I can even backup?

wait.. back up a bit.. you said your were using clockworkmod recovery.. but now you're stating that you are using 3e recovery.
i was giving you instructions on how to do a nandroid back up in cwm recovery. i haven't touched 2e and 3e in ages.
go get cwm recovery and do the back up there.

If you look at the list on the 1. page, there's no efs.img, meaning you don't have a backup of /efs.
I think in order for cwm to take backup of efs, you have to use the newest custom kernels, as they include cwm customised for I9000. If you use the backup option on Rom Manager you'll have problems later.
I see i just scripted it to my pc and external sd perhaps thinking about putting it in a swizerland vault ;-)

Why would Rom Manager give me problems?
No idea i never used it cwm is easy to use and i allways backup there ...

ClockWorkMod Recovery does not support backing up of /efs partition yet. You should do it manually.
Is it possible to extract only /efs from the nandroid backup and more important to me, will an "old" backup do the job to restore an imei.
Re efs backup
Use online nandroid manager it backs up efs and whatever else you want. You can choose or let it do it's thing. :cyclops:

quite a bit of time past this post, so does CWM supports /efc backup when I do nandroid now?

If you backup whole build, yes it does.
It is nevertheless a good idea to backup your efs folder separately, by using ADB or with terminal emulator.
...and vice versa?
I am asking because up until now I always took backups using xrecovery, and the current ROM I am using only has CWM.
The only difference between the backups these two utilities create, is that CWM backups have an extra file in the folder.
If it's not possible, is it at least possible to have both utilities and somehow select which one to use on boot?
Thanks.
If you go to restore, there is an option that says "restore from xRecovery" but you can't restore CWM backups with xrecovery.

That was quick
Thanks mate, να'σαι καλά
EDIT:
Actually, I just checked, I can't find any option like the one you described.
The CWM used is v4.0.1.5, the only options I get in Backup and Restore, are indeed, "backup", "restore" and "advanced restore" which only shows a backup I made with CWM earlier.
I checked too and I don't have it either. It's strange, I actually remember performing a restore from xrecovery backup. Sorry for disappointing you

i dunno, maybe try to install xrecovery instaid of the cmw that your rom have, and then restore your back up from xrecovery...
i dont know if it will work but you can try
i tried something that helped. i created a folder on my sdcard named 'clockworkmod' and inside that folder i made another one and named it 'backup'. i read it on a forum somewhere that the location of the backups for CWM is in sdcard\clockworkmod\backup\. so i transferred the backup i made from xrecovery to the folder i made in CWM. did a reboot and restore from CWM and it worked! hope this will help others too.
If I flash CM9 (link) with CWM can I switch back to CM7 by flashing with CWM, for example can i switch back to the MiniMod X ROM(link)?
Yes you can but before and after installation wipe data and cache it's better for your phone and finally dont forget to make a nandroid backup

Yes. CWM stays intact. If that is what you are afraid of.
You can switch between roms any number of times
