Noob question.. What is a kernel? Is CWM recovery a kernel? Pikachu01 told me to contact the developer of my kernel because of an error.. Sorry for this question, I just want to know exactly..

Recovery is where through which you flash the rom, scripts etc. Cwm is a recovery. Kernel is a different thing. Semaphore, glitch, midnight, hardcore are the kernels
The Kernel is the main component of Linux / Android. It controls memory/processor management, and most of the low-level computing.
Are you sure you want to create a ROM if you don't know what the kernel is?

Who's saying he wants to make a rom? He's just asking what's a kernel, so he could contact the dev..
PS. Usually CWM is baked in to the kernel..so it's only a part of it.

The kernel is the base of the whole operating system, well you could say it is the OS; everything you do on your phone depends on the kernel. As on a real computer, some sort of bootloader initializes lowest level hardware (BIOS or EFI on PC) and then this bootloader starts the kernel. Every driver for your peripherals is integrated into this kernel or made available for this specifically kernel version as a module. Then the kernel executes lots of scripts to start services, get up your network interfaces, triggers them to get DHCP addresses and so on. Does that help you?

Oh. Then I'll must stand corrected but for sure these kind of questions are easily answered via google..and kernel is such a important part of OS, so it isn't easy to explain it thoroughly in a forum. But if you're only making a rom, then you probably have enough basic information right here..
Sent from my sandwiched SGS
In general, the kernel is the 'middle-man' which communicates between the ROM and the hardware.

U started ur OP with "What is a kernel?, is CWM recovery a kernel?" , and that actually shows that it's not only that u don't know what a kernel is, u're also not sure what a recovery is. Now, i don't mean to hate or sound rude, but i'd have to agree with wintel. U're younger than most of the guys here, u still lack some basic knowledge, take ur time, read and learn stuff, it's nice that u're enthusiastic about it, but maybe it's better if u would reconsider publishing a rom yet, i kinda doubt u can bring in something new. Take ur time and work on ur knowledge consider this as a friendly advice rather than a diss or anything similar

I know that CWM recovery is not a kernel but recovery.. But I just wasn't sure about it because I use Galaxy S Plus configurator and CWM recovery is under "kernels". I am really experienced with CWM, made already a few packages for it. (on my other phone aswell) but thanks for your advice guys. I understand you guys... I already know a lot of things.. but im only 15 (in 1 month ;p).. I hope you guys will help me in the future with answering questions

Now... most headache, lag issue.. memory full....
So.. is there any solution for this? i know root and flash might help but how can i do this? i read some threads around, but i not sure which to choose... or should i wait for official android 2.3? Will 2.3 solve my lag/hang issue? I don't know what is root or flash exactly, what can it do? any disadvantages?
Oh! and what is JIT? I heard it can make apps run faster! worth a try?
I don't mind and hardcore/heavy solution(need advance skill) as long there is a tutorial for me xD

Want you need to do it search for username ramad or chainfire on rooting your phone... they offer good guides on how to do it or go and sign up to this website.... www.darkyroms.com... good luck...

Ok! I found some ramad's post, will have a try... some question here.. can you help me out?...
Root means i can bypass OS permission and configure the system my self right? How about flash? erase the default firmware(original android os?) and install a new one? Will it cause some hardware failure or unable to use some features like wifi, bluetooth, gps? or maybe it will enhance it? !
After flash... some apps will unable to use right? because many apps support original os like 2.2, 2.3... if after i flash it... my os is not android 2.2, etc anymore right?
And just now i factory reset my phone.. now it unable to play Mp4 file.. it say i need to convert to supported format when transfer to phone... it is strange that i never have this error before, although i was transferring the same Mp4 file that i use to play in my phone before.
Flash your phone with Darky's 9.5 link was given by chrisdavesants
It's really easy to do too and plenty of guides are around.
Although it is a Froyo (2.2.1) rom it is far more stable than any Gingerbread rom's
Everything works just as it would on a stock rom.

Good luck on that but i tell you no difference....
Root means i can bypass OS permission and configure the system my self right? Yes!!
How about flash? erase the default firmware(original android os?) and install a new one? Right...
Will it cause some hardware failure or unable to use some features like wifi, bluetooth, gps?No or maybe it will enhance it? ! Some enhancements are feasible on custom roms...
After flash... some apps will unable to use right? Didnot experience any apps not working... everything worked...
because many apps support original os like 2.2, 2.3...custom roms are based on official 2.2 or/and 2.3 so they are the same features are just enhanced...
if after i flash it... my os is not android 2.2, etc anymore right? Depends on what you flash... will stay 2.2.1 for froyo or 2.3.3 with ginger
And just now i factory reset my phone.. now it unable to play Mp4 file.. it say i need to convert to supported format when transfer to phone... it is strange that i never have this error before, although i was transferring the same Mp4 file that i use to play in my phone before.

I was recently having issues with CM7; I wasn't able to flash off of it and back onto serendipity VII. I used the Odin one-click to put the phone back to stock firmware, re-rooted it, and flashed Serendipity VII build 3.
So, here's what it's doing: Every time it boots up, the screen gets all funny: black with all sorts of grainy, pixelly colors. That's fine; it did that before I flashed CM7. A little irritating, but should still be workable. Then a voice comes on and says: "Convert data partition. Backup operation. Restore operation. [Something something] Have now activated."
Then the phone reboots and starts all over again; same screen, same voice, same words.
Here's the killer though. I cannot get into download mode at all. No matter what I do, the phone ignores my trying to get into download mode and just goes back to the voice. Can't turn it off and hit the vol+/- and power. Can't remove the battery and hold the buttons down and put the battery back in. It doesn't work.
Any ideas on how to get past this?

Voodoo? Don't think so. Bootloaders? All I flashed was the ROM. If bootloaders are separate from the ROM, then it's not likely.

U really need to read m8, use google as well to find ur answers if xda's SEARCH comes up empty. Allways read the STICKIES first. Once u have an idea how things work, read over and over the ROMs flashing instructions and only then proceed. If u feel like you don't have time for that, stock is all you need otherwise u'll most likely end up taking ur phone back to att asking for a replacement (or sending it for a jtag repair). I didn't know zip either when I first started up ,but man, reading takes u far.

1st off I didn't make assumptions as u stated what u did and was clear that in the process to get to Serendipity7, a gb rom (gb=gingerbread) u left out gb bootloaders that is a must have to run gb roms, as it was said before ^^ If u'd have been as confident flashing serendipity as u were writing that reply then u wouldn't be here in the first place. Although I'll cut you some slack since Serendipity is lacking flashing instructions . Still u shouldn't go flaming when in need of help, rather be greatful for ppl even reading you post and trying to help (that's all we wanned). Apologize for ur rookie mistake and ask what to do next, help will come - trust me. I'll give you the one where there's risk involved in the flashing procedure
As the guys, 4-2ndtwin and b-eock, said earlier @ this point u'll need a jig to force ur phone into download mode. The lady (robot) voice u heard was the voodoo lagfix (ext4) conversion which is done by the kernel.
Now once u'll be equipped with a jig and ur on dl mode flash back to stock jf6 with odin one click (optional - but I'd recomend u do a master clear) and if u'd still wanna go for serendipity then first flash a GB bootloader (i897 or i9000 -doesn't matter) followed by a kernel flash with cwm (clockworkmod recovery) backed in and last comes the rom flash. I summed it up really short ,so that u read and educate ur self . If ur looking for step by step tuturials look for them in other rom threads.

Please explain how my replies were flaming. I never RAEGD or "OMG GTFO MY THREAD"'d or "Ur so stoopid u must be a rtard!!!! LOL"'d at all. I simply explained that I'd rather not have people calling me ignorant without basis to the claim. Also, I have no reason to apologize. Yes, I screwed something up. I did nothing to anyone here, other than defend myself when people start calling me an idiot or a noob. And it's hard to be grateful for help I'm not getting.
Apparently, I've not been clear. This is the tutorial I followed today to reroot my phone:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/08/02/how-to-root-the-samsung-vibrant-captivate/
The tutorial I used for the rom is linked in the one above. Never in any tutorial does it mention anything about bootloaders or jigs or anything of the sort. That stuff was never relevant the first time I rooted my phone. This is why I don't know what people are talking about; It was never mentioned, it was never necessary until now.
That said, Fulo, the second half of your paragraph was actually the most helpful information yet. Thank you.
EDIT: Thank you to whoever decided to help rather than simply call me an idiot. I can see why these tutorials don't say anything about bootloaders now. I will be creating a jig tomorrow and will hopefully have my phone unbricked. To whoever DID decide to simply call me an idiot, I hope you learn to grow up soon.
Nobody called you an idiot, I was going to help you. But then stuff happened

The safest way is:
Download a stock GB Rom and flash it via pc Odin following the instruction on Mr Ketan's Thread.
Root it using the same guide.
Go into Recovery
Flash Paranoid Rom
Flash new Gapps
Full wipe (recommended)
You are ready!
The DANGEROUS way:
Go into Recovery
Flash Abyss Kernel 4.2 (red pill)
Reboot into RECOVERY not system (option found in recovery-->advanced)
Flash Paranoid
Flash new Gapps
Full wipe (recommended)
You are ready!
P.S.
The second method may BRICK your device, so choose carefuly mate!
Hope that helps!

If you don't know that already, then refrain from putting up tutorials just as yet. It would surely help people, but then you run the risk of misguiding them (or not being able to answer questions) since you don't seem to have a good grasp of the subject. Get some more game time and help yourself to knowing all the stuff, and you will get there.
But if you feel you know enough, go ahead and try.

Thats great
I was thinking of creating a thread where i can post tutorials for interchanging ROMs
Does the tutorial posted above applies to all the ROMs out there or is it diffirent for each ROM??
i think it will help everybody and also help me learning more about android
Thank you

Is great that there are people like you here, wanting to help out others.
I totally support your way of thinking but there is a major issue.
Every Rom has specific instruction created by the Dev. I'm thinking that the idea of creating a new thread just for instruction maybe it's over the actual needs of the users. IMO it's equally important if you reply to all the question made by new users here on Q & A Section. You can guide them to the correct direction keeping them safe from easy to make mistakes.
Please let me know what you decide and I will be there for more information and help bro!
Nice meeting you, regards!

well its true that I am uncertain of the requirements of flashing as of now thus I think it is not a good idea to post anything before learning it properly.
I will learn more about flashing and then will definitely put up a thread here at XDA
thank you very much
and yes the idea was not to just post tutorials for each ROM it was to post a guide on "how to flash successfully from one ROM to another" but again I am unsure of the proper steps myself. I think I will select a few ROMs and do a research by following those threads and then post anything related to them.
clicked thanks for both of you
@tyson - After posting that I thought it could come off a little too harsh. Nice to see you taking it constructively as intended, top lad!

Its been months since i'm on gb, and probably thats what you're running, anyway its settings>about phone. All the info that u wanna know is there, rom, baseband, kernel etc.
What is rom? On layman terms its the version of android os you're using. For more technical detail please refer the almighty google
thanks a lot
Use the search engine and don't make new threads asking for information that already exists.

I dont know how many times I have posted this and how many times other people have said this(its even a rule I think). BUT YOU NEVER EVER ASK WHAT ROM IS BEST!!!! There are too many roms out there. They all have their pros and cons. They all are diffrent on every phone and we all have diffrent user experience. Asking what is best is the same thing as going in a bar with drunk people and asking what is the best drink(words from a mod)!

Firstly, i just want to be quick with my friend phone, so that's why i'm asking. Be clear in that statement.
Second, i know about there are so many rom, but since i'm in rush, so i don't have much time to try on every single rom here. It's not mine after all. I don't want it to be bricked, since i'm a samsung user, not sony.
I still having problem to install cwm, since it's very differ to my galaxy tab.
Third, i just need suggestion. No need to bash me up. Even you're a mod. I respect all people, but please respect me too.
Btw, thanks to those who answering, i'll try your suggestion. Thanks a lot
