So, I'm on 3.2 ROM and tiatmat tachi kernel. I had a backup for recovery, but my SD card decided to fail on me. Since I haven't replaced that yet, I don't have the ability to install with a zip file via recovery. So, here are my questions:
-Is there a way for me to get to ICS without an SD card or USB host cable?
-If so, what is the best way to get to ICS?
I'm generally familiar with a lot of the various methods for flashing and I'm able to actually do research to learn steps I'm unfamiliar with... so, with that in mind, if someone can just post the main steps, I can figure out the details.
Thanks in advance!

Hi guys
i could not post on the development so i will ask here.
I just bought the phone. is totally stock.
how do i apply this [FIX] 7/Apr V10a/b/c: dexopt fix for Stock ROMs ??
Regards
First you need to install Clockworkmod. You will find a guide in the root forum. Afterwards, first thing you should do, is taking an update via CWM (clockworkmod). Then you install this update, also via CWM, from your external SD card. Of course, first you need to put the zip on it
Hope I could help you
ah ok many thanks.
My Captivate can charge but not connect to the PC via USB.
I can load and manage files on the device without issue over Wi-Fi.
If I try to use Rom Manager to Install ROM from SD Card I get "signature verification failed" and "can't open... bad" errors. I've tried several different stock ROM's and a custom one and have transferred the files several different ways to make sure there was no corruption involved.
In researching the errors it appears that I might be able to get past them by flashing a "2e" kernel over the current "3e" kernel. I was directed to this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
I see on that page that there is a USB-less procedure so I'm encouraged to move forward. The problem is that there are many, many different kernel images on that page and I'm not sure which to choose. I'm also getting a bit leery that I might brick the phone permanently considering I don't have USB.
If anyone could verify my troubleshooting direction and help with picking the correct kernel to flash I would greatly appreciate it. I've spent several hours on this and flashing ROM's is not my hobby so this techno quagmire is taking away from my regular activities. Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you have 3e recovery errors, I assume you are on stock 2.2 KB1. The link you gave is for I-9000 devices, not for the captivate. The Captivate can use I-9000 kernels only if they are reoriented for the I-897. Do NOT use those kernels. You can use SGS kernel flasher, which you can download from the market, to flash a KB1 kernel with 2e recovery. I'm pretty sure you should be able to see that in the market from a stock phone. Look in the Captivate Android Development forum for a KB1 kernel, such as the one by Supercurio, get the .tar version of it, and use sgs kernel flasher. Study the relevant threads until you are confident you understand what you are doing. But this is definitely a viable path for you.
The kernel flash was successful. Unfortunately it made no difference and I'm getting the same error(s).
Any ideas? If someone has an idea of how to brick without physically damaging the phone that would suffice as I just need to keep AT&T from knowing about the custom ROM when I take it in to get replaced. Thanks again.

Have you tried the 3 button combo into cwm and flash rom/kernel from there?
If you really want to brick, install gb bootloaders via sgs kernel flasher, and then flash a froyo rom with a bootloader in it. Insta hard brick. I would NOT do that however.
Try a factory reset, and use cwm instead of rom manager. Im sure you are recoverable..
I've tried CWM all along to load the ROM's but get the same errors.
I did a hard reset and that put the phone into a loop at the "Serendipity" splash screen. Then I did another hard reset from CWM. Still looping. Then I did a restore from CWM. Still looping.
Ideas?
I was finally able to restore an older ROM backup from CWM.
I still need to get the phone to stock...
If you are getting USB device not recognized, try a different USB port, on the back of the computer. Or try a different Computer.
I know its possible to escape the stock experience without USB, but I thought the only way to restore to full stock was via Odin and a computer.
Sent from my Captivate running Continuum 5.5
Hello, I could've swore I had an account here, but I guess not.
Let me start out by saying, I've searched but I still have a few questions,
Anyways, I've got a Captivate that I need to restore to stock to send in for repair. The USB port is dodgy. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.
Assuming I can get it to connect up, how long does ODIN need to be connected to my phone?, is it just long enough to transfer the file? Also, is there a point in using Master Clear? Can't the format and delete options in CWM accomplish the same thing?
Can anyone answer my help me out or point me to an alternative? If nothing else, I figure I can find a ROM and mount the SD card in my Inspire and use it to transfer the file.
I looked at the threads involving the HTC CDMA phones and it said to s-off and flash, but that doesn't really help me does it... I did stumble across this thread though,

Will flashing a CWM compatible stock Captivate ROM get rid of CWM?
-thanks
Flashing to stock takes about 3 minutes or so depending on a few factors.
I Wouldn't attempt an Odin flash with an iffy port.
There is a program called mobile Odin, that you can use if your phone is bootable.
Can't say that I've ever flashed to stock with a cwm zip, dunno. But if it contains a completely stock ROM, and stock kernel, it should replace cwm with stock 3e recovery...
i've searched for days on trying to understand how to root the Vivid and still not sure if i've done it correctly.
devices i've rooted or think i've rooted b/c i installed custom ROMs:
- htc aria
- htc inspire
this is something completely different.
none of the threads seem to be clear and concise giving step by step instructions for installing custom ROMs. many abbreviations and skipped steps. i will attempt to be very detailed in what i've done thus far. i understand even the slightest detail is important when having inquiries on forums.
when attempting to root, used Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2
this assisted in unlocking boothloader (this term is still hazey to me)
now i'm thinking... because the bootloader is unlocked, i can get into recovery, which i can. for some reason, had a problem with completing step 6, so i dont know if i'm 'permanently' rooted or not.
with aria and inspire, i used this recovery section to install (note: is install and flash used interchangeably?) custom ROMs. however, i didnt manipulate any 'kernels' to do so (unless it was autoManipulated in the installation of the ROM. now this kernel thing is the reason why i'm writing this post.
i'm attempting to install holiraider_final_4g.zip (hasnt finished downloading yet).
this thread: [ROM][03/06/2012] HoliRaider FINAL - Sense 3.5 /APM/Beats/DSPAudio/Amaze/Bravia, gives files, but no instructs.
so my questions are
- if the bootloader is unlocked, and i can access recovery menu, am i rooted?
- is install and flash used interchangeably?
- to use the holiRaider ROM, must i install/flash the kernel shown in thread?
- if kernel is needed, when is it installed/flashed (in reference to the steps in installing/flashing ROM, ie: install ROM first, then kernel or vice-versa)?
- in lamens (noob, for dummies, etc) terms, what is CRT on/off?
- when is 'RestoreCRT_Animationfor_final.zip' installed/flashed (step by step)?
if more info is needed i'll be glad to give it.
also, i've read the 'everyone needs to read this' thread. dont know what happened, but i have no intention of disrespecting anyone who's assisting me.
thanks for any help.
I imagine someone will help more but to answer some of your questions:
You have to flash the kernel for the rom to run correctly or else you will boot loop.
The kernel is flashed first using a command prompt with your phone hooked up to the computer.
To check if you have root you should use titanium backup or another app that requires root. Just getting into cwm is not enough I don't believe.
I believe crt is an animation, either way not crucial for the rom.
Also, read this post for help with flashing the kernel/rom. Slapshot did a great guide.
Hope I helped somewhat.
i've installed titanium backup, it states i'm not rooted.
so now... that's the first thing i need to do before installing anything.
i've unlocked the bootloader and can access recovery menu. how do i go about permanently rooting vivid. the Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2 doesnt root my phone when using the 'permRoot' button.
any assistance is greatly appreciated.
is there a link to that thread of installing/flashing kernel by slapshot. i will need the information prior to installing/flashing the holiRaid ROM.
also, i remember going to chat room or something of the sort (mIRC i think) and got assistance w/ rooting my htc inspire by attn1. this guy was fantastic. is there anything like that for the htc vivid? he remotely took over my computer and rooted my inspire. it was beautiful.
basically i want bloatware gone. i also want to be able to move every app that has the option to move to SD to move to the SD (adobe flash player, nfs shift, adobe reader, etc...).

Sorry, forgot to post the thread.
First off, let me apologize for posting what has been semi-answered in several other threads. Im a lifer when it comes to android but still a noob at rooting and custom roms. I've been rooting for about 4 to 6months. mostly basic beginner stuff. this was my first attempt at flashing a custom rom, and well, the fact that I'm here lets you know how that went for me. So I've read 30 or more threads between this site and some others and tried a handful of methods to fix but i lack the knowledge or lingo to properly understand some of the things that I've read. So anyone kind enough to break things down barney style like a bootloop for dummies for me id be forever in your debt. Here is my issue...
Once i found out that the note 3 n900a of mine is not compatible with clockwork mod or team win recovery i found and downloaded the SafeStrap recovery and flashed the biggins custom rom and even tho i tried going by the guide i read i must have went wrong somewhere and got myself stuck in boot loop or soft brick.
I've tried downloading a stock firmware for the note 3 and reflashing with heimdall. i thought it was going to work since everything went according to the guide i read 100% but it still failed.
from reading other forums I have also downloaded these programs:
1. android studio sdk
2. Java and latest JDK 7
3. zip devil
4. heimdall suite - heimdall frontend
maybe more I've forgot.
Could anyone please help explain to me the easiest method for a beginner to recover from boot loop? I can't even get my phone to boot back into safestrap recovery. only screens i can access is stock recovery mode...adb factory reset cear cache external sd etc. and Odin download mode. When i tried using the safestrap recovery i saved to my ext sd card saved as twrp file that the program mirrors, I'm not sure if I'm loading the wrong files within this folder or perhaps the wrong order or if this recovery won't even work for me at all.
I've downloaded all of the above mentioned programs but I'm not at all familiar with properly using them to do what i need with them. Please, anyone, explain this in english to someone who isn't skilled or long term rooter. if you need any more info on my issue please contact me any way you can or ask for a way to contact me externally and ill provide that as well.
