So I bought the HDMI dock station. I had a spare HDMI standard cable. I bought a mini-to standard adapter. I plugged it all up (yes, with the power cable), and nothing... well, *something*... the TV says it was getting a 1080i signal, but nothing showed up. Television was bought new in 2009.
So I thought, "Well maybe it's the TV." So I happen to have a reasonably new (less than a year) HP 2311x monitor w/ HDMI input, and it says it's receiving signal but also shows nothing.
SO... I thought, "Well maybe the dock or the adaptor is bad." So I went back to Radio Shack where I bought the adapter. Connected everything up to a little HDTV, and IT WORKED. WTF?
Came back home, and it doesn't. WTF???
Anyone know why?
Ok I got the monitor to work after sorting out some issues with the HP support site. Looks cool to have the dock display on there.
BUT... the TV. It connects, then disconnects, then connects, then disconnects... meaning during a movie, I hear sound for a split second, then none, then sound again, then none.... never gets to the image. So it feels like something isn't quite detecting right on the TV side.
Any ideas? This is the adapter I am using with my standard HDMI cable: HDMI Female A to HDMI Male C Swivel Adapter. It works fine on the Radio Shack display TV with MY HDMI cable, and fine on my HP 2311x monitor.
Hi all,
I know there have been other postings regarding this, but none have helped me solve my situation:
I have a "stock ROM" AT&T Note 2, and have tried two different Smart Dock units from Fry's. I get NO usable HDMI signal from either when connecting to my ASUS V228H monitor; the HDMI cable/monitor have been checked as working by connecting my DVD recorder up and successfully playing video content. USB connections to a wired keyboard and mouse worked well on unit #1, for some reason not on unit #2. There was no improvement when I rebooted the phone into safe mode. Lastly, the phone is correctly recognized by a PC when connecting via USB (MTP mode).
I'm ready to scrap the whole Smart Dock idea and instead buy an MHL-to-HDMI adapter and bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, which I think can be found with total price just around that of the Smart Dock... unfortunately, I guess there's no "splitter" that could let me hook a hard drive up as well, like I could with the Smart Dock.
Does anyone have any ideas? I of course would hate to have to hard reset the phone, but might do it if there's really a good chance of it helping.
Final question: is it possible that the microUSB connector at the base of the phone could get damaged in such a way that USB to PC connections work, but MHL video does not?

did you plug the dock into an original Samsung charger?
did you reboot?
mhl takes a lot of power, so you need to have the charger plugged in to make it work.
and the usb port can get stuck in a certain mode if you've used it too much without rebooting, a simple reboot will reset it.
I am using the new micro-USB to USB cord connected to the wall charger (FYI, plugged into a power-strip, not directly into a wall outlet, would that actually lead to MHL getting too litle power?). The phone was recently rebooted. I have typed this response using a USB-connected mouse, so at least that's working. HDMI is STILL not working.

I'm guessing that unless it's specifically stated for the gn2, like the samsung dock, the microusb connector is using 5 pins instead of 11. That's the issue you'll have with mhl adapters, too: find an 11 pin, or buy the 5-> 11 adapter.
If it says compatible with the note (not note2) or evo, that's a pretty solid guarantee it's using 5 pins.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
in this case the amount of pins is irrelevant. (edit: unless you didn't get a note 2 smart dock)
have you tried a different screen/TV and cable?
there are multiple versions of HDMI, and your cable or screen may be sufficient for an old DVD player but not a newer device.
Interesting that nowhere on the Smart Dock's box does it say "compatible with Note 2". But looking up the part # on the Samsung.com accessories site yields the following description:
Smart Dock Multimedia Hub
EDD-S20JWE
Compatibility: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4
As for HDMI protocols changing over time leading to incompatibilities... WTF? They don't need to create specification version numbers like USB to clue the user in? I will test your theory with an MHL to HDMI dedicated connector purchased today. If you're right, even this device won't work with my monitor...
This is going to sound like the annoying tech support people on the phone but... are you sure everything is plugged in tight?
I only ask because when I first got my smart dock I was getting picture but no sound with my hdmi cable and I was about to try a different cable but decided to try replugging everything first and voila...it started working!
It didn't make sense to me because it must be plugged in if it's working even a little but apparently either the phone wasn't docked all the way or more likely I hadn't pressed the hdmi cable in enough.
Would be nice if it's that simple in your case. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I had tested the Smart Dock's connections to make sure all were tight. No improvement.
I have given up on the Samsung Smart Dock for now. A "rig" that appears to be working is as follows:
1) Cirago MHL1000 MHL-to-HDMI adapter.
2) Mobile Phone->Voyage adapter (Micro 5 pin to 11 pin)
3) Comkia 3 foot HDMI cable.
4) ASUS VE228H monitor
5) HYPE Bluetooth Curve optical mouse
6) SMK-LINK Versapoint Bluetooth Slim Keyboard
You are definitely right about needing to check on the connection status of the various connectors. I periodically lose the HDMI video signal, which requires that I press the MHL adapter's plug tighter into the 5-to-11 pin connector. Yes, I also have the case off the Note II when attaching everything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app (using the rig above).
Okay, I'm noticing that the HDMI signal gets lost every 5-10 minutes and blacks out the monitor for 5-10 secs. I also have been having the issue of definitely less than 1080p output (not sure if even 720p) except for video player and Angry Birds Star Wars which do look good.
Is this a problem of the Cirago MHL1000 plus 5-> 11 pin converter, which would be solved if I just spent some more bucks on a Samsung HDTV cable with 11 pins? Will the Samsung MHL 2.0 cable for the S4 provide better output for a Note 2 than the Samsung S3/Note 2 cable?

Okay, I sucked it up and bought the Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV cable for the S4 and backward compatible with the Note 2. I think I've gotten things as good as it's going to get. Video out is stable and actually at higher resolution than using a Cirago cable and a 11 to 5-pin converter.
I unfortunately have no USB input capability for hard drive access. Is there any adapter to insert in the "circuit" to let me attach a HD to the Note 2 if its MicroUSB is already occupied by the MHL to HDMI cable?

hi
Hello, I have a problem when connecting a peripheral (mouse, keyboard, etc) the screen automatically flips and turns black, saying, which it is connected by hdmi too. that's not right.
otherwise it has explain, does not leave me connect the mouse and keyboard, because the s4 assumed that this also connected the hdmi.
i was using the Smart Dock, for about 6 months, and it was running perfect, i saw movies, and play games (emus, and android games) using a ps3 controller wired, on the Dock´s USB, and every time work perfectly.
But suddenly, it stop working, now its dificult to connect, i connect it, and in the phone screen appears the "HDMI cable connected", but after a few seconds appears "HDMI cable disconnected", and then, the message appears one after one,
and when it work, the screen mirroring runs well, but when i connect a mouse (wired) dont work, neither the ps3 controller or a pendrive, the USB Host of the Dock is not working,
I try using a USB OTG, and connect both mouse and ps3 controller, and both work well, but not in the Dock
anny suggestions?
Sorry for the long post
You probably are, but just in case, I'll ask anyway..... Are you using a powerful enough charger (1.8-2.0 maH output) .... e.g-the one that came with the note 2? And are the cables snugly snapped into place and not loosely connected?

I have this problem too!! none of the USB ports are functioning, however USB accessories all work with my Note 2 via OTG cable (I tried connecting the OTG cable to the Smart Dock too and this didn't work either)

I have exactly the same problem with all 3 USB ports. HDMI works fine. Is there any special setting or my dock is faulty?
I think they must be faulty, either the unit itself or possibly the charger, or the charger for some reason is not strong enough to power the USB ports (although that seems strange as everything is official Samsung product, and I've tried using my phone power adapter too which ostensibly is the same)
Yes the charger in the dock is 100% the same with the one in the phone packaging. I tried to power the dock through my laptop without any success. Unfortunately, there is not powered problem.
Does anybody know of a working MHL adapter with at least a 12" USB cable?
I tried these and they do not work (work probably 1 out of 20 times if you keep plugging/unplugging)

No, only the old Samsung one works consistently which has the short usb cAble.
I bought this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171391851548
works perfectly as I think most will.
It's all down to the sequence you plug the cables in.
Power>Phone>HDMI
Cant remember the correct sequence but try it out.
COPIED FROM AMAZON AD.
1. connect the charger to the adapter cable and power supply
2. connect the adapter cable to the HDTV device
3. connect the Smartphone to the adapter cable

I tried allcombinations before posting and none works consistently with the 2 cables I bought .
With the old Samsung adapter, it doesn't matter which order you plug in phone, power and hdmi.
I don't think all cables/adapters (advertised as 5 pin) are same. It cut open the usb part from the working Samsung adapter and it has 7 wires.
The other non working ones have 5.
If anyone is interested to know, this one works for me most of the time. Doesn't matter which order I plug it in (I usually plug the phone last though)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-MHL-Micr...Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item4185f8bc11
Its 3m in length and requires external power to work. It charges the phone although slower than MHL drains, i.e. your phone will still be discharging while connected via MHL but at a much slower rate.
Android Auto sometimes disconnects when I move the phone or cable. Even aggressive breaking or turns can sometimes move the cable/phone and cause this. However, during other times, even when I intentionally aggressively move thephone/cable, the connection remains intact.
After the disconnection, sometimes it reconnects automatically . During other times, I have to unplug and plug the usb cable to the phone to reconnect. In either case, I have to manually restart my music and navigation - it does not resume automatically and it is frustrating.
I do not think there is an issue with the phone port or USB cable because it works flawless when I connect it to a computer and use it as a storage device.
I tried changing cables but the issue persists. I use CM 12.1 on a GS4. - Is anyone else experiencing this frustration - Any suggestions?
Yeah it can happen if the cable can be wiggled. In my case, it came up through a rubber grommet in my console, and connected to my phone in an X-Grip. Once I changed that routing so the cable could be physically connected to the X-Grip (so it moved in unison with the phone/mount), there were no more issues.
One of my major beefs with Android is the near worthless micro USB connector. Hopefully the rumors are true and new phones soon start rolling out with USB-C.
i want it to be wireless.. there is no reason that it can't operate over wifi direct.. thats what CarPlay will be doing also, why not AA.

WiFi code is in AA.
Google hasn't enabled it yet, same as Apple pretty much.
I've had my Android Auto 2016 Buick for 2 months, and for the entire time my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime "cheapo" phone will loose connection with my car. 15 minutes was the longest it would go without having to unplug my phone and plug it back in, where it connected again with AA. What a pain! I tried 4 different cables including the original cable, and ALL would disconnect in 15 mintues or less. TODAY I fixed it. I purchased an 18 inch cable (more than long enough for my hookup) with gold connectors on Amazon for $4.99. My previous cables were 3 or 4 ft. In an hour of driving today AA worked perfectly, the first time since I bought the car. I don't know if it was the gold plated ends, or the shorter cable, but it worked flawlessly and never once disconnected. Here is what I purchased:
Ugreen Micro USB Cable, USB 2.0 A Male to Micro B Charging Cord and Sync Data Cable 1.5 Ft Gold
Thank you very much.
I had the same problem: I disconnected my Samsung S7 Android Auto from the Volkswagen Jetta Sporwagen.
I bought the cable on Amazon and solved the problem. I've tried it twice and it worked perfectly.
Thank you very much.
Shorter cable works better. I also test this.
Also it depents of the phone. I have test note 4, lg g2, nexus 5x.
The first 2 connect/disconect often. Max 30 min without disconect.
The nexus 5x (which i bought from second hand for 50€) will never loose connection. It always connect 1st time. Rock stable.
