Perlenspiel - A tool for learning digital game design - Off-topic

Hello XDA,
another superb tipp for you'all: Perlenspiel
It's a little javascript-based engine dedicated for all those people who want to know something about game design. It features a grid of "beads" (squares atm) with a max. size of 32x32. It also features functions to control these beads or user input. It's a great environment to be creative and to come up with new or funny ideas. May the one or another will give it a try
Edit: Gamasutra: Article about Brian Moriarty, Perlenspiel
Moriarty drew inspiration from the 1943 novel The Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse, which describes a game in which the rules and mechanics are not explained in detail. Using that concept, Moriarty set out to create a game engine that would teach students about coding with minimal guidance.
His eventual solution was a simple, Javascript-based engine dubbed Perlenspiel, which could create games using a mosaic-like grid (with a resolution of a medium-sized windows con), colored pixels (or "beads"), and a text-based status box.
Moriarty explained that Javascript became his language of choice because it is currently one of the most versatile and useful languages in nearly all realms of game development.

Advice needed : I want to study web design/ ui design

What can i study in order for me to work as a web designer/ ui designer? keep in mind that i don't wanna study engineering , i dont like all of those math courses, algebra, physics ... do they teach it in universities or do i have to sign up in an institute?
I dont think there's a career such as "ui design" but there must a "web design" right? there must a "branch" in graphic design, i dont think im right for grphic design since im terrible at drawing what do you guys think ?
It would be IT where I'm going to college. That would include html, mySQL, php, and some other happy fun stuff Possibly Javascript.
-How cruel is the golden rule, when the lives we live are all golden plated-
UI design is generally an overlap of developers and graphic designers. A graphic designer is needed to make it look good, but a developer is needed to make it practical. Between them both, you get a good UI. Well, that's the theory anyway.
If you want to do UI design then you need to decide whether you want to do it from the design point of view, or the development point of view. If you want to actually build websites, then go the development route. If you don't, graphic design is probably the best bet.
There's also games development and design, which does have a particular branch that involves GUI design, but that's usually part of a quite heavy games programming course.
I've personally never heard of a UI design course. I'm not saying that there isn't one, but after 15 years in the industry I've never heard of anyone doing it as a job, either, other than in games development.

Thank you, your reply was really helpful , i want to do it from the design point of view, something i've learned here in xda is that a programmer does not make a good designer and viceversa, sometimes people make great programs but they're hideous, with lack of good taste and too many things/colors going on for example
What about " web design" is there a actually a course for that?
Yup, i studied that. Okay, not web design, but that was included. I studied multimedia design. That included web design, 3D, photography, and film.

I attended a graphic design program (contuing education) at a college nearby. If you're looking to learn the basics (illustrator, PS, InDesign.. etc.) Then I was would start there. But if you're already familiar with image editing and want to learn how to apply it to mobile UI design you can start by looking here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916814. But like John mentioned, there are two types of designing regarding UI.. basic modifying of images in the system is quit simple and only requires image editing software and 7zip (might want to learn how to edit mode.9/9patch and m10 images correctly as well). But if you're looking to do some of the more advanced designing you will need to do a bit of reading/searching. Thankfully, you can find all the info here at XDA.

multimedia design ? sounds nice, for how long? 4 years?
I only studied for 1 year, but i did plan on 4 years with 3 of those in Australia, but i got bored and stopped after one. And it was pricey. 20K per year.

Did you have a degree before studing graphic design? I need to know basics , since i know nothing, i just have my highschool degree, i want to do this as my career, not just a hobby
I know you're not asking me, but i did not have a degree in "graphics" before i started. It was a private school, so if you show them some "dineros", you're in. But hey, you have to learn it from some place ney? It doesn't hurt knowing some basic stuff in PS or Illustrator though.
In fairness, there's a LOT of online tutorials for learning techniques in all the popular design/illustration apps. It certainly wouldn't do any harm to get a head start.

Of course that's what i plan on doing , study by my own till i start the program
You do not need to excel at drawing to study graphic art. You just need an eye for design and color; the rest can be learned at school. Having said that, talent is extremely important to find success as a graphic artist/designer.
Web design courses are usually included in graphic arts program, but you may also find exclusive web design programs. There’s one web design and development program at California College San Diego that trains graduates in both front-end design and back-end development of websites. Find more details on the link below:

Absolutely do but unfortunately Artists don't do free work. They don't realize if we don't get paid, hard for us to pay upfront for something a profit will never be rendered or even on soon to be paid apps, can't always pay upfront, which is why my kickstarter has a few big apps but need funding to hire artists/org for characters for games.
So, Photoshop tutorials and not following them and mixing is unfortunately how a lot of my Gfx are made. We have gfx artists that do our clients websites but to have side work, gets pricy. ;/
I'm probably going to look into doing something during the holidays break, I've never had Photoshop lessons but I can do basic graphics. If I get the motivation, I probably wouldn't mind thinking up a redesign for this app.

Anything you can come up with, would be greatly appreciated. Always nice to see what others would like things to be . You will of course be credited on anything provided and happy to share AD commission which is like pennies but they supposedly eventually add up, which I have yet to see but happy to share .

Best advice for new theme develeopers

Hello fellow themers!
I've learned a few things so far about marketing and selling themes on Google's Play Store so far and figured I would share what I found. I hope others also share what they have learned about the process. So I just finished my first ever completed themes for android with the online Go Theme Factory packaging tool/site. I realized that my history in programming with Pascal and C++ really didn't match up to the ever growing JavaScript phenomenon and the learning curve would just be too much for me with my 80+ hour a week job as a Paramedic.. if you didn't already catch that from my username. I decided to use the Go Theme Factory because it was easy and simply took the programming portion of developing a theme out of the equation so I could focus on design. Long story short... I finally finished my completed themes and was ready for the MASSES to see what a fabuloussss job I have done!... Easier said than done. Believe me I'm not the type to walk into a room and expect things to be handed to me, i'm a very hard worker and have gotten where I am in life because of it. What I have realized so far is that to expect instant mass exposure is simply unreal. I've noticed that there are a few key components to being that sought after designer who gets thousands of downloads on the Google Play Store. Many of these may seem like a "no brainer" but to new designers in the theming market these pointers may really help...
1. MAKE A QUALITY PRODUCT: If you don't put any effort into making a quality theme users will let you know. Spend that extra time to make sure you are producing a theme that you yourself would LOVE to have and interact with multiple times a day. Don't get me wrong if you are making a theme say to appease cute kitten lovers but you actually hate cats.. you won't necessarily love having that theme on your phone. Put yourself in the potential downloaders shoes. Create something that you can be proud of calling your own. If you lack on details and quality you may still get numerous downloads, but I wouldn't expect to have great user reviews if any at all. How likely would it be for that person to scroll down and click the "See More" link showing your other works of art that you spent countless hours on?
2. DEVELOP FOR MULTIPLE LAUNCHERS: There are numerous launchers available right now. Even though Go Launcher EX is the most popular launcher with regards to downloads, you shouldn't limit your audience to one platform. Almost all of the highest downloaded and highest grossing themes on the market and made to work with multiple launchers such as Go Launcher Ex, ADW, Nova, Apex, Solo, Action and more. The more launchers that your theme is compatible with the more exposure you will get. Why would someone download an ADW theme if they are a dedicated Nova user? It's easier for them to just simply search for a similar theme on their launchers platform.
3. KEEP CURRENT WITH TRENDS: Right now the highest trending themes and icon packs are ones that either resemble iOS 7 or ones that have a "flat" appearance. The iOS 7 style is obvious. Whenever a new phone or operating system comes out users want something similar. The "flat" style I believe is the lingering result of when the Windows phone first came out and theme developers rushed into reproducing the same look. Regardless of their origin it tells you something.. android is one of the only operating systems out there that you can openly and easily modify the look of your phones user interface. If they want the look and feel of an iPhone one day then the Windows phone the next they can have it. If you keep current with popular trends and new user interfaces, design a quality theme identical to it, and be one of the first offering it to a community of android users you may just be up there in one of the "Top New..." lists.
4. COMPATIBILITY FOR TABLETS: Phones aren't the only devices people want to modify anymore. There is more and more popularity in themes for tablets now than there ever was before. Tablet prices are much more affordable now. This translates into more users looking for apps, launchers, and ultimately themes. Icon sizes are increasing and pixel density seems to grow exponentially for each new device released. Make sure that your designs meet these visual expectations.
5. RESPOND TO EVERY REQUEST: I personally believe that great customer service is often overlooked with theme developers. If you aren't willing to take requests or answer questions that downloaders have then you shouldn't complain about your "CURRENT / TOTAL INSTALLS" ratio. Be nice, use smiley faces, complete requests as quick as you can, and guide them in the right direction when they ask a question about how to do something. Every person you help will remember it I promise you. If it means the difference between a 5 star rating or a 1 star rating you will be glad that you took that extra minute or two to respond back. Remember, you won't please everyone because you can't fix stupid but you can at least try to be helpful.
6. KEY WORDS AND KEY PHRASES: This topic specifically was one of the biggest eye openers for me after reading an article titled "App Store Optimization". Link below I highly suggest you give it a read. After I made a few changes in the wording of my app description I noticed an increase in downloads overnight. The article was written in 2011 by an android developer and the co-founder of ANDLABS. It covers the importance of key words and key phrases used in the description of your apps. Now I know a lot has changed since 2011 and android app searches on the Google Play Store do not rely as heavily on key words and phrases but regardless it will help. I won't name the specific icon pack but recently I saw one within the top 10 of the "Top New Paid" list with keywords of "iOS7, iOS 7, iPhone 5..." wayyyyyy down the bottom of the description where no typical user would think of reading. The kicker.. it was FAR from the new iOS 7's style and was marketed as a MIUI icon pack.

I could sit and type for hours about other pieces of advice I've learned throughout the process but I've chatted enough.
What has helped you gain exposure and downloads? Whats the best advice you can give to new theme developers?
Reply back and share with everyone!

[APP] Dragon Ball Z Transformation Guide [01-14-14] [V] 2.3.0.1

Hi Everyone!
I'm a long time Windows Phone advocate... Though I guess most of you guys must be as well, if you belong to a Windows Phone forum, haha.
Anyway, I wanted to get on here and spread the word a bit about an app I've been working on. I'm no professional developer. Heck I can hardly write actual code. I pretty much just stick with "Design View" in Blend and only occasionally venture into the unknown abyss that is "Code View."
Developing is just a hobby, though anytime a hobby can bring in money is definitely a plus. I'm a senior in college and a Psychology/Sociology major. Again, not much experience in non-hobby-based computing/developing. I also great enjoy the Dragon Ball series, as it's my favorite anime. My love of Dragon Ball, coupled with my love of Windows Phone is really why I chose to begin developing.
But that was just a little bit about me. Here's information about my app:
Dragon Ball Z: Transformation Guide is an informational app that delves into the many transformations that take place throughout the anime classic, Dragon Ball Z. It contains synopses, pictures, tables (listing who all have encountered such transformations as well as when (specific Manga Chapter and TV Episode/Movie).
Fairly recent additions to the app include Image Galleries, tapping to zoom on images, and TONS of awesome transformations spanning all episodes of the three series (DB/Z/GT) as well as from all 18 movies, including the newest, Battle of Gods!
As a one-man developer, I'm finding it pretty tough to market the app and get it popular, so hopefully exposing here will help with that!
Also, if you download it, and enjoy it, please rate and review it! If you have any suggestion, please feel free to message me here and let me know your suggestions, as well as tips, if you have any
Thanks
Here's a link to the Windows Store:
thank for share. i like dragon ball

Since sir you find it interesting, in simple narrative it's like national geographic channel video works like. But I work on forest structure and composition as main part along with birds, butterflies, moths, bees, other higher animals etc.,
Once We are there, we don't know what we will come across but we do! In that context this 108mp phone is handy I mean it's everything.
Thanks
