Overclocking the ULP in the Tegra 2 SoC? - LG Optimus 2x

Just looking on Wiki on the Tegra 2 section and noticed that there's 4 models of the Tegra 2, with the OX2 running lowest clocked version.
Our ULP GPU is clocked at 300Mhz but other versions in the same family have theres at 400Mhz.
Is there a kernal that allows GPU overclocking? Would be nice to get a 1.2-1.4Ghz CPU with a 400Mhz GPU..

old VorkKernel could do that... but it broke the camera

I would definately be interested in this myself as I already had a thread going asking about it. A total guess here, but I think the problem 'may' be in the voltage required to get it to 400mhz, rather than upping the mhz itself.
As I say I might be wrong! The Aandtech review of the O2X show's that it does in deed have 400Mhz memory, but only running @ 300Mhz. That just smacks of potential to me

On my old Acer Liquid Metal the last kernal I had supported overclockg on the adreno 205 GPU and let's just say that coupled with the new drivers that Qualcomm released and an overclock it was killing the PowerVR SGX540 in a lot of benchmark.

That must have been one hell of an overclock to achieve that!

Ask your kernel dev if he can help you

on horsepower 2x we can set the gpu frequency up to 350Mhz, i think it works...

+1 that would be nice
"Yesterday" we have single-core phones, now we have dual cores with lot of power and we talk about OC?
I know what to touch for overclocking the GPU in Tegra...but I think it's a bit useless and battery wasting...
Why would you want to OC your GPU? Are there ANY games out there that lag?
However another intersting thing to do would be to lower the memory the GPU reserves e.g. only 64mb instead of 128. That way you could have more free RAM for the OS.
as if in a PC
IMO OCing gpu will not give any significant change though
The xoom is 333mhz GPU ,LG 2X is 300mhz, may be it‘d up to 333mhz to impact the 3D game performance .

and it could be very nice if will be possible set a VIDEO ram for GPU.

is it possible to set the video ram when it need? so no need reserve the fix ram for video

video ram is hardware related. you cant change this
get a galaxy II if you want benchmarks, that thing beats the crap out of everything in benchmarks.
why ? sgs2 is not faster....than tegra

Its not hardware related. Its a boot paramater, so yes you can change it. Thought i dont know how.
For certain tasks GPU speed would probably be preferable over CPU. Also, is there any voltage control for the GPU? Slight OC + UV or just UV would be pro, combined with the same on the CPU.

LOL face the facts. according to the gpu benchmarks it is. glbenchmark is the most rigorous gpu benchmark available to smartphones. just see for yourself.

This is a stupid request anyway, tegra, etc all can handle anything thats available for these phones. someone should move this to general, there is no development in this thread

Is there any Kernel with CPU OC functionality available?

There is an update coming very soon, possibly today as he's announced everything's working. This new one will be fast as hell and everything will work as it should. The current alpha for stock is OK, just YouTube freezes and reboot just gets stuck so you need to pull battery, other than that its a solid kernel

1.7 is overkill, no app needs it. What is really needed is a kernel that uses cores better and doesn't cut the frequency when full quad is used. This one for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270308

In theory you can overclock it as really high, but all chips are built differently and some can OC more than others (like PC cpus). However, unlike PC s, you cannot easily change the cooling on our phones and OC would definitely reduce the life of the phone if it's in constant stress. You could probably overclock it by increasing core voltage but remember it's a phone, not an overclockable rig. Sorry I couldn't give you an exact answer.

[INFO] Android One Overclocking

Hi guys !
I've been trying to add overclocking to Android One, I'm able to add another frequency (both Overclock and Underclock) but I'm able to test it, the 1391 MHz was the stablest overclock frequency I could get. Decreasing frequency lower than 590 MHz makes booting slower (I don't know why).
Check the screenshot, I'll report more news once I get things finished.
I have attached the mt_cpufreq.c just in case anyone have a kernel source and want to try the overclock.
EDIT: It seems max frequency can't be changed since it's hardcoded to 1.3 GHz, it keeps jumping to 1.3 GHz when screen is turned off, but the frequency sticks when phone is rebooted, but not on screen off.
Click to collapse
EDIT2: It seems that mt_ptp also controls DVFS, which is interesting. This means we have to edit two files and disable restoring frequency to its default table.
Click to collapse
EDIT3: I found this in mt_cpufreq.c :
Code:
static unsigned int g_max_freq_by_ptp = DVFS_F0;
Which is defined in the same file, the DVFS_F0 is :
Code:
#define DVFS_F0 (1300000) // KHz
The DVFS_F0 is 1.3 GHz, this might explain why the max frequency keeps jumping to 1.3 GHz when screen off. But this is just an assumption.
I've added mt_ptp.c just in case anyone want to checkout and help the development.

Interesting
I had given up all hopes of low level modifications such as over clocking /underclocking/under volting and kernel level wake gestures like double tap to wake etc... This gives me something to look at. Thank you
It seems that max freq can't be set to other than 1300 MHz / 1.3 GHz.
Can anyone here using CM12.1 confirm this bug ? Since it might be because of the ROM but I'm unsure here, it can be either ROM or my custom built kernel.
BTW, 470 MHz isn't fully implemented, the kernel refuses to use it. It might be because I haven't defined it in the volt switch function.
EDIT: Another possibility, it seems on mt_ptp, the clock are either hardcoded or defined in other file. So I have to say that overclocking might be still far away to be achieved.

Depends, does your phone kernel source exist ? If yes, then you're free to try. If not, then don't.
BTW, please don't think this is just a 'install the .c file and get overclock'. It needs many work, and such, I advise you to have at least some advanced knowledge of Linux Kernel.

This phone/CPU/GPU handles almost all content the Play Store can throw at it with ease. You may have slight FPS drops with the odd game, but you are not going to rewrite history gaining 4fps from a marginal over clock and even then you'd be better over clocking the GPU not the CPU anyway.
I agree with others. This obsession with Antutu scores is utterly pointless. And overclocks are a monumental waste of battery in the form of heat.
This obsession is almost as annoying as the folk that don't use any apps and wake their screen every now and then too increase screen on time, to then boast that they managed 12hours SOT.

That is false... The storage solution is what makes things Load quicker and what governor/io scheduler youre using. Over clocking is useless and trust me I know, I've over clocked every phone of mine until I realized all it does is cause instability, less battery life and more heating. The only viable over clocking is the GPU.
