Hi All,
I rooted my phone and tried a couple of ROMS recently just to play around but then decided to try go back to stock and wait for official updates. The way I did it was just to do a Nandroid restore and so far so good, I have the yellow triangle though and still have cwm installed. My problem now is that a 73.5mb OTA update appeared today which looks like it downloads and installs ok but when it reboots it goes into cwm recovery with an error E:Invalid command argument. If I then restart I get a message saying the update failed and I should try using Kies. If I connect my phone to Kies I get a message saying "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies"
I don't want to miss out on future updates and I'm not sure I want to carry on using custom ROMS any more so are there any ideas about what I need to do?
Many thanks!
Install Chainfire's ICS Repack via Mobile Odin then install "Triangle Away" App to remove yellow Triangle on Start up. Then flash again the stock firmware using PC Odin. then try OTA updates.
clarification
heloo man.. please can u explain how to do it? i did not get it:s so sorrry
Just letting you know that it worked fine thanks, bit of a scary moment when I first put the stock ROM on and it wouldn't stop crashing enough to get into the phone - a wipe/factory reset sorted this.
Thanks again.

Alright, so I updated my phone when the first OTA update was released, and it installed successfully no problems. After this I got into rooting my phone so that I could get rid of the AT&T crapware, use launcher pro, and enable sideloading for apps. I thought that I would check for another update since rumors were swirling about 2.2, and to my surprise it detected a package to download. I was able to download it, however it wouldn't finish installing on the phone and said that it could not be installed. Thinking that this was due to my root, I used Odin to flash back to stock and retry the install, and it still didn't work. So, after that I reverted back to the root, and decided to go and check the firmware and baseband version What is confusing to me is that for "firmware version" it says that I have "2.1-update1", but my baseband version still says "1897UCJF6" instead of "JH7". Now when I try to install whatever supposed update that is available, it downloads and then gets stuck at 50% in the progress bar when trying to install. So I guess my question is, should I be worried about this? Is this the current version, and does it just say "JF6" because of my root? Also, will I need to unroot if I want to install the 2.2 update whenever it comes out?
I apologize for the novel, I'm just trying to be as informative about my situation as possible. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JF6 is the stock firmware and JH7 was the ota update.

Alright thanks, but why is my phone still displaying "2.1-update1" if I still have the stock firmware? Is it because of the root that it is displaying JF6 instead of JH7?

JH7 was also considered 2.1-update1
there is not an official 2.2 yet
Okay well thanks, I think I'm about to just flash to a 2.2 ROM, I'm tired of waiting on samsung for 2.2

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and answered, but I did search and couldn't find a definitive answer.
I have a "German" Note which came with 2.3.5 initially, I did one OTA update (to KK9) and it appears that luckily for me, I was still able to use the ZergRush exploit and root it and get the custom CWM, etc.
Now as I sit on KK9, I see that there is another OTA update available to me (KL7?) that clocks in at about 71MB.
With root, custom CWM, and CF-Root 5.0 at the moment, I don't want to lose that in an update.
So, is it safe to OTA or should I download something else and flash it via CWM? If so, what should I download and how should I flash it?
Thanks! Just don't want to brick or loose root.

(From memory only
You can "safely" update: that is, some users have reported no problems but I've already read issues with backup managers not being able to unfreeze apps, boot loops, and keyboard/random apps crashing when you try to open them.
KL7 is a stunning update (my battery now lasts forever). I'm going to root later in the summer once everything becomes stable.

After update, you cant root it with zergrush exploit as previous. Better you download full rom, install mobile odin pro, n flash it with 'ever root' option. So will get root during flashing
Thank you!
How can I confirm that the update being offered via OTA from KK9 is indeed KL7? Is that the most appropriate and current update path to follow? I know there are many different builds for potentially different devices, and I just want to make sure I am on the right path, and am merely assuming at this point that KL7 is the next step for my Note.
Thanks again, your advice makes much sense, and with already being Root and having Mobile Odin Pro, this seems like a much more intelligent approach. I want my device to be rooted, but rock stock and absolutely stable otherwise.
Regards,
-Rob
I can only say 71MB is almost exactly what I remember the KL7 update being. Other than that, I don't know how you can check (alternatively, you could download the update from XDA, apply it, then check for OTAs to see whether or not it was KL7).

So, what if you have CWM installed? Can I use Mobile Odin still? Or will this get rid of my CMW recovery and/or screw something else up?
if you use cwm still u can flash it to kl7, but again same, u cant root it. So using mobile odin pro, u can root kl7 during flashing by selecting 'eve root' n again u can cf root n get cwm for kl7 as you did it b4
Edit : yes with installed cwm still can use mobile odin, n remember u need pro version of mobile odin

Got the pro version. Thanks!
So just to make sure, coming from Stock KK9, rooted + with CWM:
Flash KL7 w/ ever root option Odin Pro
Re-install KL7 version of CWM.
Should all be set?
This is non-wipe too right? So everything should remain in tact?
Exactly, and when v dont select re partition box, it shud remain intact.(here also v dont selecting) But always keep backup b4 these kind of stuff.
Edit: I was able to get my phone flashed and updated to KL8. The process I used I descibed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21153439#post21153439
Ok, I'm using Mobile Odin Pro to try to flash to KL7 from KK5. I have root + CWM in KK5, use Mobile Odin according to the instructions to flash KL7...but I always get stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen. No matter how long I leave it, it will stay that way. To recover, I have to use Odin on PC to reflash KK5 and then reroot. Any suggestions on what else to try?
I couldn't get flashing with Mobile Odin to work correctly. I ended up getting the update to work by using CWM to flash the KL8 firmware, while pre-rooting. I then had to fix the keyboard issue by flashing the CSC, as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997.
Once I did that, I installed CMW Manager again using the method found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360. With the firmware updated and the radio working (phone wouldn't work in KL7) I just restored everything from a Titanium Backup file and it's all working.

I have the same problem, but with KK9. I too stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen.
I also use Mobile Odin Pro...

I did it like schaggo described in this thread
And it worked for me!!!
Alright so here goes, I was rooted on GB and I didn't get an OTA notification, so I unrooted (using the latest Open Europe GB stock rom) and I still didn't get an OTA notification. So i went into Kies, updated the it to the latest version before plugging my phone in, and now it says that my device does not support updating via Kies. Is there any way to get official ICS without rooting again (I'm giving the phone to my mom, and when I was rooted there were one too many issues with stability and usability).
You can use PC Odin to get ICS.
Okay, where can I get the rom for it, and will it void the warranty (I know that rooting also does, but I unrooted and I want to have my mom just be able to send it off for repair rather than having me go over there, unroot or do whatever needs to be done before sending it away).

Look under the Android Development category for DrKetan's thread with stock ROMs. You can download a non-rooted ICS, I think. And if its not rooted it won't put a triangle on the screen or mess with the binary counter.
Sorry, i know this is a noobish question, but i got kind of confused. When I odin the rom, should I unzip it or not? When I unzip it, then it gives me the md5 (which I know how to flash) but also a .dll so what should I do with that?
Hello There
Try to reinstall the kies with the update version in the official site.
just follow the instructions in Dr. ketan's thread, he even has screen shots for the procedure.
Hi all!
1)- My Note is stock and non rooted device (Korea). Some days back I already receive the ICS update via FOTA, download complete, installing, but after reboot the device show me a message some like (I not remember exactly):
"can´t install the firmware, try with Kies"
In first moment I entry in panic :S but after use the phone is all normal, now with ICS, and looking that all run perfect with 4.0.3.
2)- Also when connect now to Kies MacOS in firmware say:
"Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies."
Anyone receive a similar messages?
Thanks and regards!

Both of these issues are fairly common, I wouldn't worry.
Try updating your kies software and drivers on mac.
Make sure you read up on the superbrick bug in Stock ics, don't perform any factory resets or data wipes while on ics kernel.

In stock? incredible, always we pay for a product that ever still in "beta" state
Thanks for the remark :good:
No worries. Samsung are working with our devs on an updated kernel with the issue removed, hopefully it'll be released within a month.

I just noticed when I booted into stock recovery that it says I have the NIH firmware. However the build and info section says that I'm on nk4...i thought this was odd. Im stock rooted with cf auto root. Only very minor changes (mobile data toggle and frozen apps) I know CF autoroot flashes a recovery to apply root. Stock recovery btw I was wondering if this may have something to do with it? Is this normal? Thanks

That does sound weird. What root method did you follow? You shouldve installed TWRP. Pretty sure youve already tripped knox so you might aswell get TWRP so you can make backups and mod safely :good:
i used cf auto root. i intentionally didnt flash a recovery in anticipation of 5.0 update. ( hoping to unroot and receive it OTA) i read some where the stock recovery is how updates are applied. it also says at the bottom something about verity verification failed. doing some research on that now.
nobody?

Either way u tripped knox. Flash twrp because when 5.0 hits u still gotta flash stock rom and then update and when you go back to stock it gonna load stock recovery .
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Ok so even if I unroot it won't do OTA? Didn't know that.... But my main question is if any one with the stock recovery can tell me if the firmware version in recovery matches the one on the build number

I will be honest I don't know as most of add twrp from root process. Not sure. If your device status says official u might get ota but don't update till you wipe and head back to stock or you might hit some issues.
