[Q] Captivate Email from 2.3 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The original Android 2.3 update for the Captivate came with a new email client. Or updated version anyway. This client blows any other one I've seen out of the water. Does anyone know where I can get the apk for that? I am running Serendipity 7. I downloaded the package with the Samsung email but its the version that was prior to the 2.3 upgrade. I have been looking all over for this.

Why not just use K-9?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk

The one that came with the Captivate update is 10 times better than K9. I briefly looked at K9 and didn't really like it.

extract .apk from any stock KK4 .zip CWM ROM - Nostalgia 2.2, Fasty, Saurom, Apex - it's under /system/app stored as Email.apk

Thanks, I think I have the correct files. I tried to install the .apk, but it failed. I am assuming that it needs to be deodexed. I am very new at this, but I found a program called xUltimate that is supposed to do this for me. I am going to give it a try.

Did you just try to install it regularly? Cause that won't work, you need a root file explorer, a terminal emulater, or adb and put our on /system/app then reboot.

Yes, I tried to just install it regularly first. I noticed that there was an .apk file and an .odex file, so I figured it needed to be deodexed. I took a look at that xUltimate software, but it wasn't as self-explanatory as I had hoped. Maybe someone can provide some decent instructions on how I can install it.

[SOLVED] How do I reinstall some bloatware w/Odex (Daily Briefing)?

I searched and found lots of threads on removing the bloat, not many on how to reinstall. I am going to flash a friend's phone to Cognition Froyo Beta6 and I know she uses this app.
I have successfully reloaded other removed .apk's using the Sideload Wonder Machine. However, this particular application won't install successfully (I'm testing it out on my phone just to see if it can install; I'm running Cog Beta5.5). After it tries to install I get a line saying Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT].
In DG's list of removed bloatware there are two files for Daily Briefing: InfoAlarm.apk and InfoAlarm.odex. Maybe the odex file is the problem? Do I do anything with that file? Drop it in /system/apps before trying to install the apk file? Any help appreciated.
Just get the genie widget. It is much better in my opinion and does the what the daily briefing widget did plus some. Just a thought.
Thanks, I will take a look at Genie Widget.
For what it's worth, I did finally figure out how to reload Daily Briefing. I'll post how I did it here since it may help someone else who is trying to reload an app that includes an odex file.
I used Root Explorer to put both of the files in system/app. Then I adjusted the permissions for the .apk file to: User; read, rewrite, execute - Group; read, execute - and Others; read, execute. I did not "install" the app. I just rebooted the phone and it was there. I don't know for certain, but I would expect this to work for other apps that have a corresponding odex file.

Thanks for your instructions mobius911. This got me going in the right direction for my issue, which was reinstalling a couple other AT&T apps - AT&T Navigator and Family Map. I got the original AT&T APKs from designgears' list of removed apps in his Cognition mod [http://www.ponack.net/designgears/removed-apps-froyo/]. I knew which one was for AT&T Nav ("ATTNav") but I had to search to find out which APK was the right one for Family Map [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8420365&postcount=62]. Then I used Droid Explorer [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558108] to install the APKs into system/app. It was pretty easy to do once I figured it out but jeez, it sure took me a while to get there.

You by any chance have both files still for daily brief? Want to get them back on my phone.
i followed the instructions on root explorer and i get stuck in a boot loop upon reboot. any ideas?
I figured something out with this. I just bought the Samsung Desk dock and wanted DeskHome to work. It has an icon for Daily Briefing and I actually like the program. I am running Cognition 2.3b4 and it does not have the Daily Briefing on it. I had tried backing it up with Titanium backup, but it did not restore correctly.
Anyway, onto the meat of the matter. Cognition v2.3b3 actually DOES have an .apk for the daily briefing in it and it does not require the odex to work. I am assuming Designgears modified it. If you download the Cognition v2.3b3 and extract it to a folder somewhere, you can browse to system - app and find the InfoAlarm.apk there. Then use Root Explorer to copy it into the system - app folder on your phone. Reboot, and you will have Daily Briefing.
This is pretty much the same thing that deanhatescoffee did, but I was unable to find a link to where the extracted .apk files were.
Here is a link to Cognition v2.3b3.

ACK! I guess I am a new user so I can't post links? Anyway add an http and www up above and that's the link.

[Q] How to install Allshare .apk and .odex

After much google searching, and searching here on XDA, I'm at a loss. I have the Allshare.apk and .odex, however I have had no luck installing them. I've tried various suggesions, including pushing them from adb shell, and nothing seems to work.
I would love to continue using custom roms, but not having Allshare is a big reason for me to just use rooted stock. The rom I'm trying to install it on is Cognition Beta (Froyo).
Titanium Backup also doesn't work for this. It tells me that it backed up Allshare, but when I try to install it, the restore button doesn't even show up.
Also, a quick question for Rom Manager. With the rom backup feature, can you only restore a backup for the rom you are using? (i.e if you want to restore a backup for another rom, you have to flash the rom first, then restore?)
Although posted in the wrong forum... I'd also like an answer to this. Running CDE and would really like to have AllShare to stream movies off my media server.

Not sure why this would be the wrong forum. I'm using a Captivate, and trying to install Allshare on a Captivate rom.
use root explorer and add them to System/app and paste both files there.
reboot your device, and voila

Still at square one. Altho the .apk and .odex are now in system/apps, it didn't affect anything. Also, looked up root explorer, and how to use it, then downloaded it. It won't remount my main file system as read only...so it's permanently in r/w now.
Also tried flashing to killer23d's rom, to use titanium backup on the allshare he has in his rom, still wouldn't work.
So....clueless at this point.

At one point, I had this same problem, and the only solution there is, is to reflash the rom. It's a PITA, I know. And don't worry about what your filesystem is mounted as in Root Explorer. After every reboot it reverts to read only again.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be my case. Even after reflashing Cognition, my file system is still R/W. Didn't even have to hit the white button on root explorer to paste files into system/app.
Also, adding dlna.apk and dlna.odex into system/app still isn't giving me Allshare.
Edit: Well, I've found a better solution. I'm gonna go with Killer23d's rom...looks alot more like stock Froyo, is based on the I9000, has Allshare, AND Mobile AP. Both features that I wanted.
Thanks for trying guys. If anyone does come up with a solution tho, please feel free to use this thread, as searching for allshare.apk on google results in this thread being either the 2nd or 3rd search result (can't remember).
Works for me.
I just put AllShare back in, using the attached file, and it's working fine.
I'm running Cognition 2.2 Beta 9.1.3 and put the file into "system\app" using Root Explorer.
I also changed the permissions of the file and selected just the following:
USER = READ + WRITE
GROUP = READ
OTHERS = READ
Remove any other checked permissions.
In case you don't know how to get into the permissions, just long-press the file, from within Root Explorer, and choose "Permissions" from the list that pops up.
Don't forget to reboot right after.
Your issue is most likely because you are trying to reintegrate an odex'ed AllShare while you are using a de-odex'ed ROM. Ozone777's file looks to be about the correct size for a de-odex'ed AllShare. Just move it into the /system/app folder with root explorer as mentioned above and you should be good to go.
I used terminal to drop the APK attached in the previous post into /system/app and it works beautifully. CogYo 2.2.9

allshare installed
This forum is awesome, I was able to put back allshare and it is working like a champ.
Thanks guys.

[Q] old stock android keyboard in 2.3.x

Ok, I have searched high and low, and found nothing, I want my good old android stock keyboard in gingerbread. I have found a hundred ways of putting the gb one on everything, even a psp, but not the other way around. Can someone build an apk, or a zip to do this? I am having such trouble getting use to the gb keyboard.
So, im asking for the old default androind keyboard in the new 2.3.X
Thank you

I think he means the keyboard that was in 2.1 (or 2.2).
Correct me if I'm wrong OP.
Yes, the one on 2.1 and 2.2. I hate this gb one, space bar is so small!

I'm thinking you could always pull it out of the 2.2 Froyo ROM zip that is around here.
Should be in system/app (I think).
You can use 7zip to pull it directly as a zip instead of unzziping, getting it and rezipping.
Once you got it, just put it on your sd card and install.
I can't promise it will work cause the framework is different on GB ROMs but it's worth a try. The worse you'll get is a "Can't install error".
Oh, I got it. And it even installs. But I don't know where it goes, Or where supposed to go in gb. Cause it didn't show up in the settings section.

I believe you should be able to change it under settings -> local and text.

Que?
what is trying to put files where?
meta-inf is in cwm zip files, it's the flashing instructions for cwm? There is no folder on the phone called that.
I'm confused
Lets start over shall we,
What you have to do is open the zip, either unzip with native windows tools or just open the archive in 7zip. Take out the keyboard apk you want out of /system/app and the corresponding lib file in /system/lib. Put those in the same folders on the phone, either push them with adb or drop them in with root explorer, and reboot.
Still no guarantee it'll quirk on gingerbread though...
The above mentioned directory is the folders in the zip file that when opened it will write to on extraction. On earlier roms, 2.2.x, i flashed it via cw as an update.zip. Apparently this doesn't work with 2.3.x. Do i have a file that is really old?

stock email apk needed for Ginger bread 2.3.3

hi,
can some one find me the native (stock) email apk that comes with gingerbread 2.3.3 released for galaxy tab last week by chainfire.
i managed to corrupt it first and then delete it through titanium .
i tried the one thread from motorola defy that doesnt install.
any help is highly appreciated.

I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but i compiled the stock email for gingerbread because the dx GB leak didn't include stock email and I dislike the blur one. Do a post search of my name and it should come up... let me know if this helps you.

apologies, but i am unable to locate this thread.
if your talking about exploring it in my tab, i believe it will not be there as i am gingerbread released by chainfire.
is there anyway i can may be factory reset without loosing my applications that i installed. this should bring this email application back.
thanks for your help in advance.

New Market .apk

Just found this on Android Central
Grab the new market apk while its hot
Either get it from the source link on the post or I've attached it below.
Put it on your SD card and then use file explorer to find it and install.
I just installed it on mine and seems to work pretty good. Nicer look than the old market.
How did I know that the Eris would be one of the first places for new apks.
Thanks!!!
wow thanks will try it out.

Try this:
This should pull the market apk currently on your phone and save it on your computer as a backup:
adb pull /system/app/com.android.vending.apk com.android.vending-backup.apk
Then push the new apk. This should rename the file as the previous apk and push it to your system/app folder:
adb push com.android.vending-1.apk /system/app/com.android.vending.apk
Then reboot:
adb reboot
Then try launching the market.
I am going to load it on a GB and XTRSense5 tonight and see how it works. any one else have any input on this ?
Input about how it runs? I am running GSB 3.7 Odexed and it is very stable. It takes a little time to load initially, but after that, I find the user experience much better than the previous market design.

It should run with either name, but I would make sure that you don't have more than one in there. That should be the one that you replace, though.

Noob, first time posting...

Rooted Eris, Froyo 2.2.1, CM7, KaosFroyo V39
Edit: Never mind. Did the adb pull/push after flashing GSB CM7. Everything works great.
Has anyone seen this......
I can search the Market for games, books, and movies and find results. When I search for apps, I get no matches for my search. I've tried this with multiple versions of the market and multiple ROMs.
I've got content filtering set to show all.
Any suggestions.
