Get it from Google Play: External Keyboard Helper Pro
Make your Android device play nice with your non-US external keyboard.
A non visible soft keyboard (Input Method) intended to be used with hardware Bluetooth and USB keyboards. It automaticly detects Bluetooth keyboards (and in some cases also USB keyboards) and brings up the Input Method dialog. It also supports a lot of different keylayouts for non-US external keyboards.
This app does NOT require a rooted device.
Features
International keyboard layouts.
Remaps the Escape key to BACK (optional)
Allows you to control which characters should be threated as combining characters.
A "null" Soft Keyboard to use with hardware keyboards (Bluetooth & USB).
Automaticly brings up Input Method selection dialog when Bluetooth keyboard connects or disconnects.
Automatic detection can also work with USB keyboards on some platforms (experimental)
App that brings up Input Method selection (for easy access)
Currently supported keyboard layouts

All layouts are based on standard USB Keyboard layouts. Bluetooth keyboards sometimes do not follow the standard completely but you can customize the layout yourself if it doesn't match perfectly.
Characters that can be threated as combining characters
acute
breve
caron
cedilla
circumflex
diaeresis/umlaut/dialytika
dialytika tonos
dot above/dot below
double acute
grave
ogonek

tonos
What it does NOT
It won't fix your Bluetooth or USB connected keyboard if it wasn't working in the first place.
It does not automaticly switch Input Method. It only shows the dialog and you will have to choose Input Method manually. This is an intentional limitation built into Android by Google. No app is allowed to change Input Method without user interaction (unless the app is a system app).
Planned features
Support for more keyboard layouts.
DONE!Support for manually remapping keys.
DONE!If requested I may also make it work on Android versions lower than 2.3.
Since yesterday it works with Android 1.6+ and custom remapping feature has been added along with some more predefined layouts and some more combining characters.
A demo version will be created soon.

Hi! Your app is perfect. I think it is really great idea. But I have one little problem.. there isn't czech layout. Is there any possibility You could add it in next version?
If you tell me what do you need, I can help you prepare it for you app.

Sure, the reason why I haven't added it allready is that I'm not sure which one of the 3 different Czech layouts that are the most commonly used.
Czech: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/goglobal/keyboards/kbdcz.html
Czech QWERTY: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/goglobal/keyboards/kbdcz1.html
Czech Programmer: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/goglobal/keyboards/kbdcz2.html
Which of these three is the most common one?
Before anyone post something here, there is a FAQ page that you can access.
http://www.apedroid.com/android-applications/external-keyboard-helper/faq
If the FAQs dont resolve the problem, then you can considered post it here.
Thank you for the app!

From common czech kb it differs just in key with the forward slash ("/"). Common czech keyboard has there -,_ (SHIFT), * (ALTGR)

The "dot above" dead key (altgr+8) is supposed to generate E I and Z with dot-above according to this layout: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/goglobal/keyboards/kbdcz.html
Are "dot-above-E" (ėĖ) and "dot-above-I" (İ) really used in the Czech language? It would save me some work if I can skip those two combinations.
(not to be confused with èÈ éÉ and ìÌ íÍ)

Anyway, the czech layout is the same as on Wikipedie (link from your previous post). I found this layout before, bude XDA didn't let mi post the link to it

thanks.
Hi, this app seems to really solve my problem of using keyboard to ssh. I am trying to map the ctrl key on my igo keyboard to send ctrl key code. But in the preset list of options i don't see ctrl as one of the options. Could you please help me out here.

Adding it is possible. You can even do it yourself allready with the customize feature if you know all the unicodes needed.
However Hebrew writes from right to left unless I am misinformed and I'm not sure if Android handles that automaticly. You can do some testing with the demo version. You'll find the unicodes here by putting the mouse pointer on each key:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/msdn/goglobal/keyboards/kbdheb.html
Change U+NNNN to 0xNNNN and the codes will work directly in my app.
EDIT: Nevermind. Just tried adding two hebrew characters manually and at least in Android 4.0.4 where I test it automaticly handles this. I'll add Hebrew. You can do it yourself using the customize keymap feature if you do not want to wait.
Wow!
This is great thank you.
I just finished adding the mapping, and i love it.
great product, good job!

Let me know if the Hebrew layout in verison 2.5 is OK or if it need any adjustments.
update to 2.5,
keyboard customize mapping somehow doesnt recognize the new mapping i inserted.
so i map manually the BT_HID.kl.
do you need any logcat?

- Did previous version work?
- Have you switched to External Keyboard Helper Pro input method?
- Have you enabled a "switch key" in advanced remapping and accidently switched mapping off?
- Is no key remapped at all or is it some specific keys that is not working?
- What device ID does your keyboard show if you use the "debugging" option in "Advanced settings"?
I've noticed that there is a "cracked" version of my app floating around. I honestly don't care if anyone cannot afford $3 to get their $50-$100 dollar keyboard to work correctly but what worries me is that this "cracked" version I found has been modified and resigned. About 30kb (or more) code has been added and I have no idea what the added code does because I have no intention to install that version.
I've added none of Googles Licensing code so there is nothing to "crack" in the app so there should be no reason whatsover for anyone to add about 30kb to the executable.
The site where I found it also offers tons of other "cracked" apps and most likely they have also been modified. Maybe they've "only" added advertisment code to profit from the "cracked" apps but I guess a more likely scenario is that they've added malicious code. If you for some reason choose to download a "cracked" version of an Android app, a "cracked" Input Method is propably the worst possible choice of app to pirate.
I've written a blog post about it with some more information about it.

* Update Nov. 12. 2008 (missing file in zip)
I have made this thread because I spent some time searching for the keyboard mapping (kmap) of my HTC S730 phone (Wings). A guy named bigflavor pointed me in the right direction, so here we go.
The kmap is a file you use to set up the correct mapping between the slideout keyboard on the phone and the actual characters that comes out when you press the keys.
0106, 0406, 0706 - this is all for Danish, i.e. the "06" (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/winxp/xp-lcid.mspx).
For Danish keymapping:
The zip file contains 3 files
eT9.Wings.0406.kmap.txt
eT9.Dis.9Keys.Danish.Kbd.dll
eT9.Danish.Ldb.dll
1. Connect your Windows Mobile to your PC via the USB-cable.
2. Extract all files into the \\Windows folder on your HTC S730.
3. Open up your Mobile Registry Editor and add the following 5 key/value pairs to the Registry of your HTC S730.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\AvailableLanguages
Add 0106
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\IME\KdbDlls
Add 00010606 = eT9.Dis.9Keys.Danish.Kbd.dll
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\IME\KeyboardLayouDlls
Add 00000706 = eT9.Wings.0406.kmap.txt
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\IME\LanguageKeyboardIDMapping
Add 0106 = 0706
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\LdbDlls
Add 0106 = eT9.Danish.Ldb.dll
- you're done - have fun
You should make a wiki entry, and link it off the WM 6 standard page and the Wings main page. I've been maintaining the Wings main page for some time, trying to update it as more things pop up.

Oh, thanks, but it's the XT9 pack... I already have the other one and it works, but the problem is the QWERTY keyboard layout - when I press fn+m, for example, the apostrophe should come out - the semicolon does instead.
I've included my hardware layout pic - seems it's norwegian or something like that o.o
I'd be satisfied with working other or english layout, it's only important to me if the corresponding keys will work as they should

try using the Tilt keyboard fix to fix it! you can get it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334911
I made a small mod to the Savage25rcracer cab and on Touch pro I can confirm all is working well. This is the cab you install when you don't have a fuze. You will need to install the disable Xt9 cab attached after you install this. It does however completely ... disable Xt9. Thanks to Dharvey we Now also have this keyboard without the arrow on the bottom, for those that think it is to big with them.
Touch pro 2 VGA keyboard (No Arrows)
Touch pro 2 VGA keyboard (With Arrows)
mirror (With Arrows)
Thanks to DHarvey these should now fully work for fuze, I do think you need install the Xt9 cab still. Now say thank you to the good Mr. Harvey
Installation instructions:
1. Download cab and copy to device
2. Kill SIPGT_app.exe with DotFred Task Manager or equivalent
3. Install Cab
4. Soft-reset
5. Enjoy
Fuze Touch Pro 2 VGA keyboard (no arrows)(update)
Fuze Touch Pro 2 VGA keyboard (with arrows)for herg
Dharvey was kind enough to make a working fuze version here and here (with SIPGT_app.exe), some users do have trouble getting the las one installed.
Be warned: This keyboard is hard to uninstall and may possibly require a hard reset to do so.

Weird I have a touch pro too, but the keys are mapped properly. I did however notice that some of the keys like "?" need Fn and the a longpress of the "/?"-button will make it appear whereas shortpress won't. I have the shlomki touch pro keyboard installed over a fuze optimized ROM, maybe that's why, 12
I've actually tried to get this to work on a Fuze before and it works fine (the FN keys.. etc). It's just very tedious work of remapping everything in the layout text file. But it's possible, and if nobody wants to do it, I will finish working on it one day.

Hello 12aon from tweakers.net
Nice to have you here aswell.
I would like how to configure your keyboard. I cannot find in under INPUT and i would like to disable the force feedback when i press any key. I tells me full qwerty, is this replaced? Or does the old keyboard still exists.
Is there any possibility that there are any settings available in order to modify?

I didn't know I was from tweakers. It should be under full qwerty, force feedback? If I choose other other input I can choose the regular windows keyboard, compact qwerty is gone somehow. The default settings are possible.
But i got a vibrate function inside this keyboard. There's no option that I could find which is able to disable it.
For me it's full qwerty that is probably your keyboard type now.
That's why i asked why your keyboard is not inside of the options.
i haven't got anything that is called OTHER.
Put in your vote guys! I mean i can't decide. :| But there are major differences. I'll list em
TouchPal:
Compact qwerty in landscape!
Prediction is better than rest
Skin is fit with the rest
FingerKeyboard:
Skins are awesome
Spacebar is huge
Customizable
EzInput v2:
uhh lol
Works best with xT9 (Although I have gotten fingerkeyboard to work with xT9, but it doesn't really matter if you don't use Compact Qwerty). Yes there is a compact qwerty for ezinput 2
EDIT: Added screenshots. A review and rating for TouchPal and FingerKeyboard. The .zips attached contain all the screenshots of that SIP. EzInput 2 still won't install properly :|
EDIT 2: My vote goes to FingerKeyboard It is superior to TouchPal being free and all. Guess I won't be buying TouchPal. But I definitely think that FingerKeyboard could improve a little by doing things such as making it easier to navigate between Keyboard > Text > Num Pad/D-Pad. I still think it should have a num pad, d-pad, and a symbols page separately. It might also help if the landscape buttons were on top instead of on the sides so to give the letters more space and make them bigger. I'm sure all this is possible via skinning though. Question is, who's up for it?
EDIT 3: Seems i voted too early. TouchPal is out-doing FingerKeyboard. I mean the skin is nice, but TouchPal is just more functional. Someone tell me how to add words to the dictionary!! :'(

Review: The design was worked to look kinda like ezinput? Although it does have a compact qwerty in landscape, it's not useful for big thumbs I like qwerty in both landscape and portrait. TouchPal's qwerty in landscape has been the best for me so far. Compact is helpful with you're using prediction, which seems better than xT9, but I have yet to find a way to add things into the dictionary :| But the prediction will be pretty damn awesome once I learn how to add words. The ability to just click a key and drag down to get it's other symbol and drag up to get it's capital is pretty damn awesome
Design: 4 / 5
Functionality: 4 / 5
Prediction: 4 / 5 (Until I can figure out how to add words to the dictionary)
Landscape: 4.5 / 5
FingerKeyboard
Review: This is free compared to TouchPal which is not and that is an advantage in itself I love this keyboard as well. It has the biggest space bar out of all of them and it's ability to skin and key map is better than the other two. Although it's second symbol is not accessible like TouchPal, you can define how many ms of holding will allow the second symbol of the key to appear and about 11 of these symbols are changeable via the Config. It would've been nice if all of them were changeable though, but as a bonus, you have a little texting area which has some nifty buttons such as "What's up" and "How are you doing" for quick text responses. I can also change the skin and allow clicking the buttons to either vibrate or make a sound which is nifty to know that it's been clicked. The difference between TouchPal and this is that in TouchPal since it has drag down and up functions, you cannot drag the key elsewhere. But in Fingerkeyboard, if you click a key and you notice it's the wrong letter, you can drag your finger to the other one and it won't click it until you release. It's functionality is far superior to TouchPal's. It allows you to hold the backspace button and you can delete a word and in caps if you do that, it deletes the whole line. Pretty useful so I don't have to go back and delete letter after letter if I accidentally spell something wrong. I have been able to achieve prediction with xT9 Which is awesome, but I don't need it since it's a qwerty keyboard and knowing xT9, it's not that great anyways :| Now the landscape is very similar to TouchPal's. It seems smaller than TouchPal's though and for that reason, it's easier to text in TouchPal's landscape. Although both TouchPal and FingerKeyboard have a number keypad and a d-pad, FingerKeyboard does not have the symbols that TouchPal does separately and FingerKeyboard's d-pad and number keypad is on the same screen.
Design: 5 / 5
Functionality: 4.9 / 5
Prediction: 3 / 5
Landscape: 4 / 5
According to me EzInput is only a backup So no review there. Sorry guys.
I discovered TouchPal recently and it is my favorite right now because I had conflict with FingerKeyboard and disabling XT9 with Windows Mobile 6.5. TouchPal seems to be better in call categories including typing. predicting, work well with cooked ROM. EZinput is abviously my fall back when things are not working out well.

(forgot to add that fingerkeyboard is free )
I am and have been using PCM keyboard version .14 (w/ vga skin of course) because I like how the enlarged letter shows up above the when you click (and hold) the button.
Also, I love the autocorrect on it which is based off of the location of the buttons.
The one thing I don't like about PCMkeyboard is that it glitches sometimes and gets stuck. Also the buttons are just a little smaller than I'd like them to be.
Are there any other keyboards that do the autocorrect based on letter placement and the popup of the letter (similar to iPhone) that PCM keyboard does?

FingerKeyboard and TouchPal both popup the letter. TouchPAl has a great autocorrect software and FingerKeyboard can be used with xT9 (which is the default prediction software in the newer htc phones). I would suggest you try out TouchPal.

I was trying not to be fair But I wrote it in the review
sometimes i use fingerkeyboard for longer messages instead of sliding out my keyboard just because fingerkeyboard is that awesome!
FK all the way!
Why Not Giannis86 FK?
not sure you know or just posted original creators on purpose which lacks some functionality but giannis86 updated and modded fingerkeyboard with a 123 button for easy switching between keyboard text and numbers etc. and has arrows. you may want to look into this and do fk a little more justice in its comparison to touchpal
Nothin wrong with EZ input IMO, no need to waste resources on a new keyboard unless you absolutely have to, finger keyboard has to be my favorite otherwise but you know me, I like to have my usage as low as possible... =D
Could you change language with FingerKeyboard? E.g. to danish?
Yes, included in the setup (dan).
Finger Keyboard
Has anyone had the problem in FK where in xt9 you press the suggestion on the left and it restarts TF?
Hello Guys,
I have rooted my NC. Everything is working as expected. Now I want to put some app icons on Home but I can't find how to do that.
Also the Keyboard setting is not working. If I go to Settings > Keyboard the NC go back to the prevous screen. I need to stop the auto-correct or change the language for autocorrect.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.
Regards,
Jorge

You'll need a 3rd party launcher to put icons on your homescreen (launcher pro, adw, zeam...).
The keyboard setting isn't working because rooting switched it to a new keyboard. It should work fine when you open a text field. There are threads on here about installing a variety of different keyboards.
Thanks wvcachi, I have installed another launcher and now I'm able to organize the home screen. Now I need to solve the issue with the keyboard. The keyboard is working well, the problem is the auto-correct, the is changing my words when I write in another language (spanish).
Can I just stop the auto correct?
Can I revert to the original Keyboard on NC?
Thanks for your help.
I have the same problem, I need to change the language of the keyboard, but I cannot get into the settings. I've tried different keboards, but with none I can change the particular settings nor language.
Hello, I got the fix downloading and installing a GBKB.APK from another sub-forum here (not nook subforum, I think android Dev subforum) after install that I'm able to select and use the gingerbread keyboard. Now in gb kb there is setting button where you can add another languages.
I hope this work for you.
Regards
The language of auto-correct is tied to the keyboard. Autonooting gives you the Droid X keyboard with American English autocorrection.
You can install a Chinese IME, Spanish keyboard, AZERTY with French auto-correct, or whatever else you desire. As the previous poster mentioned, there is a modified Gingerbread keyboard for 2.1 that includes Spanish dictionary. You can search for it in the Nook Color forums (the keyboard is from another forum, but there are directions for NC here). It's a very long thread, but the directions in the OP should work.
You can install Smart Keyboard or SwiftKey from the market (and moving the app to the System/app directory), and then, from the keyboard, enter to the specific settings.
In Smart Keyboard you have to long press the ABC or 123 key to enter settings, and in SwiftKey you have to long press the mic key. There you can change the language or disable autocorrect.
Additionally, if you want, you can change the language of the nook color (so that all programs menus and dates and stuff appear in spanish) using morelocale2 from the market.

New Honecomb theme added!
Wishlist: the ability to change the time required for a long press. The default is set about twice as long as I like it.
Bug: The caps lock entry triggers as long as long as the shift key is pressed twice within a fairly long period, whether or not any other keys are pressed in between. The result is that typing two capital letters quickly results in an accidental caps lock afterwards. Caps lock should only trigger if the shift key is tapped twice in a row.
Thanks!

Great idea to make the long press variable. Have to look if this is possible (should be)

Never thought about the scenario you described. You must type awefully fast with this keyboard But thanks for noticing this. I either will change the way the caps log is activated or make the time between the two taps user configurable (have to work on the shift key anyway when I'm going to implement multitouch)
Great feedback. Thanks!
Happy user - paid version. Must have for Dell Streak 5.
not special for phone one.

Keys for the phone layout are 1.25 times wider. Forgot to mention that.
i dunno if it's obvious to everyone else, but even the "standard phone" keyboard layout has ARROW keys in the bottom row of the keyboard. i found this accidentally since i didn't see it shown in any of the screenshots.
i find that it's much easier to edit text using arrow keys than the "magnifying glass" on my Droid X. you can adjust the height of the arrow key row (and the spacebar key row) independently of the regular keys too. truly awesome keyboard!
Hello, I downloaded the paid version onto a non-rooted G-Tablet and while the new keyboard shows up in the keyboard select menu in settings, when I click on it nothing happens and when I long press on an application keyboard area only the TapNTap keyboard is available the Thumb keyboard is not listed. Any ideas or suggestions? I love the keyboard!
Can you add Russian Language please? Such a great keyboard will be very popular amoung russian speaking men.

Yes, I'm working on it. First I have to roll out updates with some new but basic features. This weekend I will add voice recognition to the keyboard.

Sorry I don't know exactly how the gtab is handling third party keyboards. I believe, but I'm not sure, that you have to copy the apk to the system/app directory like it is done on the Nook Color. Check the gtab forums how one can install a third party keyboard.

Sadly I learned today that SwiftKey also copied this function in their new beta. At exact the same way (including the option to hide the keys)
The situation is becoming unworkable. First they copied the tablet layout and now this. I'm currently finding myself asking if I can add other innovations I had in mind.
A shame for such a big moneymaker. They just ruin the market. This really sucks!! I wrote them a letter asking to solve this in a fair way, because I just feel paralized when it comes to adding new functions.

yes, there are numerous examples of this behavior in the Market and i agree it is a real problem. Google needs to address this or it will result in stifled innovation and reduced quality of applications available for android. real innovation is hard work - why should a developer be motivated to create new and exciting applications when anyone else can replicate the idea without consequence?

It's the free market. It can drive companies to excel. In the end this seems only theoretical. What I learn is that marketing is a much better investment in such a market. That's the weird tragedy of the western free market.

I'm not quite sure about the GTab, but I know when I install a keyboard I sometimes have to go into
Menu > Settings > Language & Keyboard
and then click the check box, then go to an application where I can type and do the long press to switch the standard keyboard over to the one I would like.
Hope that may be able to help you out. If not, and you figure it out, please don't hesitate to post your solution for anyone else that may encounter this problem.
Update (v 3.0)
Voice Input added for Android 2.2+ (currently only English supported)
new Spanish keyboard layout + dictionary
new German keyboard layout
shortcut for dictionary switching added
new Digital Red theme
popup with tld shortcuts on .com key
+ some general maintenance
Much more to come
V3.01 on Droid X with stock Android 2.2.1: has anyone else noticed a bit of a delay in the cursor movement when pressing the arrow keys in LANDSCAPE mode? i notice this when using Table Layout in landscape mode (5" and 7") but not when using any of the layouts in PORTRAIT mode. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling but saw no improvement. just curious if it's just me...

As far as I can see, there's nothing changed in the update that could influence this behavior. Have you tried to reboot the device? I think it's a temporary memory problem.
