You should probably read the first couple of sticky threads on this same page as they will give you a good place to start the learning curve of rooting and flashing roms that we all go through.. Enjoy!

Yes, you need to do some research. One option you will have is to use the procedure that is documented in the HBOOT 1.16/2.00 Downgrade Tool thread to be able gain true S-OFF. The other option is to use the Unlock bootloader procedure at HTCDEV.com. In both cases you will need to get familiar with the Android SDK tools adb.exe and fastboot.exe, so I suggest you do some more research.
Let me share from the GURU of Android on XDA Senior Member, YOU DONT NEED TO DOWNGRADE TO HBOOT 1.13 to Install Costum Rom. And I've follow that instruction how to do that I have made for my Inc S hboot 1.16 S-On.
Yes,first thing you should go htcdev to unlock bootloader and flash with CWM or 4EXT witch one. And you can install any costum rom from the bigger chief. Before do that after flash e.g Clockwork, you should Nandroid Backup. Pls consider to Backup your htc orig.rom and then you wipe, factory reset.and install costum rom om your SDcard....

I tried unlocking the bootloader from htcdev. I followed the instructions and did everything that was supposed to. I got the success message as well.
I just started the mobile. It shows "Unlocked" in rose color on the top. Same time it shows S - ON on the next line.

With the bootloader in an UNLOCKED state, you can now install ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) and once you have CWM installed you can flash custom ROMs. Check the sticky posts in this forum for the steps you need to follow.

To flash ClockworkMod, you need to S-OFF which is technically different than unlocked.
Here is a thread that discusses installing ClockworkMod after you have gained S-OFF:

But you still haven't given us much information to go on.
Using the correct terminolgy:
1. Your phone is unlocked, but does it show S-OFF when you boot into the bootloader screen (Hold Volume Down and Press the Power button).
2. If your phone is S-OFF, what method did you use to gain S-OFF? Did you use AlphaRevX or XTC Clip?
3. If you are following the guide from the previous post, what message are you getting when you attempt to perform the fastboot flash recovery command?
4. You mentioned in your first post that you have tried everything. Could you enlighten us on exactly which methods you have attempted and the messages you got.
There are alot of people on here that may have some suggestions when you give more specifics. Just trying to help.
I got it finally!!!!! I used alpharex to get s-off but couldn't get cwm but I used super one click and got root and then flashed clockworkmod thanks for all you help.

1. Hi guys i looked at tpblake's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435136 but was wondering if the same answers would apply when ICS came out?
2.Also in this question in tpblake's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435136
"Q: My IncS was shipped with HBOOT 2.00.0000 but Revolutionary does not support this version. How can I downgrade the HBOOT in order to run Revolutionary and get S-OFF?
A: Community member nonverbose has written a tool and guide for getting S-OFF with HBOOT 1.16.0000 and this tool and guide has been confirmed to also work with HBOOT 2.00.0000 when the bootloader is in an UNLOCKED state."
In his answer it said ''when the bootloader is in an UNLOCKED state" does that mean you should unlock your bootloader through htcdev.com before running noverbose's tool?
3. How do i set my signature? I looked around someone stated 5 - 8 posts but i have done that but still cant set my signature! not that im spamming or anything
Sorry for being a complete noob but yeh '-'
If your question is 'can I run a ruu or ota with root/s off/ unlocked bootloader', then your answer is no.
However Nik said that once the official ics comes out, he will provide us with a rooted stock rom
If your question is 'should I root it now with revolutionary or wait till ics and root then', I would downgrade and s off now, as s off is better than HTCdev unlock, and we dont know if there will be s off or a downgrade method from the ics update
You don't have to HTCdev unlock with nonverbose's tool
I think you need 10 posts, and its under user cp at the top of the page with you are logged in.

OTA won't work if you have unocked (s-off) your hBoot. But if you are S-off, you can always flash an ICS ROM by Nikhil, or ARHD, and I'm sure both will release a tweaked, rooted version of the stock ICS that will be pushed as OTAupgrade . OTA is for all lesser mortals who are stuck with locked phones.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA
I'd say its best just to use ROMs that get developed as they will also be updated to be the latest android etc.
Also if you read the forums you will see a lot of people have bricked there phones from unrooting and then updating. Roms like ARHD etc will always get updated.
So do not worry just wait for ROMS to be designed

Before you guys jump on me, I would like to apologize for just being dumb. Even though that is the truth, may I have some help?
I didn't read the guide on turning the S-Off on my Vivid, I thought all I had to do was run the hason s-off and it would automatically do everything for me. Yeah, I didn't even know about a wire trick (I've already admitted the obvious). My Vivid just boots to the JoupunutBear screen and reboots after about 3 minutes to the same screen. I guess I've bricked my device!:crying:
Is it possible for HTC to remotely restore my Vivid, or do I have to take it to an authorized dealer that repair phones? If so, how much am I looking at? I wished I had left my phone alone, but doing some of the crazy wild and exciting stuff for phones is so cool! I wish I had read that I needed to pin mod something, or else I would not have tried to do S-Off! I just got my phone a few days ago in a trade for my HTC Shift.
I guess this will be an expensive lesson and hopefully I'll read and not think every procedure for different phones are the same.
I miss my Vivid!:crying:

I thought as long as I had reovery image on my device, I had nothing to worry about. Boy was I wrong!
Any tips on which recovery I should use? Preferably with guide, my nerves are a bit tweaked right now.
OK, I just relocked...now what?
Downloaded AT&T stock ROM, downloaded AT&T PH39img. I guess now I'm suppose to place both files on SD card and use HBOOT?
Follow the guide in my signature titled "back to stock" (I think its step 6). Then if you want to re root or whatever follow the guide in my signature steps 1-4.

I have to download the RUU and not use the AT&Tzip I've already have downloaded. Seems straight forward, I'll reply back, thanks!
Since I have some time before the RUU finishes downloading, I tried to reflash factory rom using the second method. When I reboot into recovery, it does load the PG file, but it doesn't give me an option to flash anything?
Just a heads up...for me ruu never worked with a unlocked bootloader so if it doesn't work relock your bootloader with the super tool thing in he dev section...just boot into fastboot from hboot and click relock bootloader, then boot back to fastboot and run the ruu

The beginning of step 6 requires you to relock the bootloader. Otherwise, the RUU or PH zip will not work.

Man this download is taking long, I still have 15 percent to go (6 minutes)!
I guess I have to have the RUU for any of this to work, so I'll stop playing around with it before I render the device useless. So I'll be patient since I have 5 minutes to go, then I should be able to perform any of the two methods found in the guide. I'm so glad there are so many here to help me, I love you guys! Don't be too flattered, I love my Vivid more! Once this is done, I'll thank each and every one of you!
OK all, I have to leave for right now. I started the RRU utility, but it stops at checking signatures.

I have an AT&T Vivid, I thought the one for Holiday Cingular was the correct one? On the phone it says RUU update failed. So I'll look into it when I get back and try then. For some reason I can't update the HBOOT?
Bye for now!
I bet you can't update the bootloader while it is locked, LOL!

It should work if you re-locked your bootloader... So that isn't the problem. Maybe somewhere during you trying to S-OFF you still managed to change the HBOOT to the unofficial one. If so, then the RUU or PH zip will both probably not work. Somehow you need to get back to the stock HBOOT. You might need to ask in the Juoponut bear thread or contact them directly.

I've got an Incredible S with me here with Bootloader version 2.02.0000 and official ICS installed (upgraded OTA from GB around 4 months back). I unlocked the bootloader through the HTC Dev site. Every thing went smooth. Next, i flashed a custom recovery (CWM v 5.0.2.) and then the Superuser zip file i found one of the related Incredible S threads. I proceeded to flash the device with a JB ROM (after duly wiping data and cache on the phone) and it went well along with flashing of the gapps package. When rebooting after the procedure was done, the phone remained stuck on the startup HTC white screen. I tried waiting for 10-20 minutes but there was no change. I was (and still am) able to boot into CWMR and hence also tried re-flashing to no avail. Please note that I did not take a nandroid backup (Quite stupid to do so now that i look back) and hence not able to restore. Tried searching for an RUU of the official ICS by HTC for this phone but could not find one. Tried one from HTC's site (Asia specific RUU) but it gave an error saying i had the wrong RUU file for my phone. Also, my phone is S-ON.
I would request members to please point me to the correct sources for the solution of my situation. Please tell me how should i go about from here.
TIA

Many thanks for your reply! I got the solution after i posted here after a bit more searching around the different threads. I did the exact same thing mentioned by Drugzy below an hour back. Got the device to boot and was running JB with HBOOT version 2.02.000 and S-ON. Later, went ahead with the guide to S-OFF using revolutionary and it was a success as well. Currently running JB with HBOOT version 1.13 and S-OFF .

Hi, I have searched and I have tried, reaching out...
Desire C Cricket HBOOT 1.63 Radio 0.92.00.0903 Unlocked Bootloader S-On
I was trying to put a recovery on and root after unlocking bootloader and for whatever reason I cannot get into any recovery other than stock. Once in stock I cannot flash anything. Only thing I could tell was previous owner had a customer kernel on it but now I cannot get past the HTC red writing screen.
Normally in this situation I would go back to stock via PL01DIA.zip update in bootloader but I cannot find a viable one for this specific device.
OK, somehow got a working CWM Recovery. But I cannot get any roms to boot past the HTC red writting screen. Does anyone out there have a full CWM backup of a working Cricket rom?

Thanks guys! Sorry for bugging around this forum. Anyone with CDMA ping me, I'm not finding any friends I need a clean back up of any Cricket rom from CWM since it looks like the RUU was never made.
Or, if anyone knows how to change the CID on this phone without S-off. Just looking to make it an MP3 player.
