why the lack of development? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Hello, I was deciding between the sensation 4g and the samsung galaxy s2 and stumbled upon this phone, and find it super intriguing and I'm now leaning more towards this phone the Vivid. but was just wondering why the lack of development. is it because it's new and devs haven't had time, or hardware limitations or some other factors. would like to pick up this phone, but would love to see more choices in terms of roms.
thanks. was just curious.

It's because some people in this forum no nothing of respect or gratitude.

Locked Bootloader for many months. Only method is via HTC dev site.
No S-OFF options as of yet
As of recently the few Devs that we have had, have been disrespected and chased off. This is something we are obviously trying to change
Drew

This phone is a very capable phone, no real hardware limitations. The stock rom leave a lot to be desired and IMO really holds the phone back. As for the lack of development, we only had a handful of devs, and most of them have left due to hurt feelings. I wont go into the details, just skim through some of the closed threads in the general and dev sections. If you get a vivid and want to flash a custom rom, our devs are still out there, you just have to look outside of xda.

it's kind of like the amaze then right? where it doesn't have any s-off option. i guess the locked bootloader held it back a bit.
anyway, thanks guys for the explanation. yeah i found pirateghost's site and downloaded his rom.
and yeah, read some of the posts regarding devs leaving. hopefully those devs come back and also some more come onboard.

They are not coming back. Wild Child runs his own site and PirateGhost moved on to another website. That way they can control the kind of people that can post.

Motorola ready to make sweet love to Android ROM devs and rooters?

This is taken from engadget.com
HTC is legendary for its tacit support of the Android ROM cooking community. Motorola... not so much, thanks in large part to the company's policy of locking down the bootloader as a means to prevent unapproved software from running on its Droid handsets. An annoyance recently exacperated by a moderator of Moto's YouTube channel who suggested that customers looking to install custom ROMs should "buy elsewhere." Ouch. The resulting public relations kerfuffle then prompted Motorola to publish a clarification to its bootloader policy on Facebook:
We apologize for the feedback we provided regarding our bootloader policy. The response does not reflect the views of Motorola. We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability.
Obviously, we'll have wait for said details to get official before calling this a shift in strategy. It's certainly an improvement over Moto's previous approach of lawyering-up with cease and desist orders. Perhaps Motorola is taking a cue from Microsoft who seems to have recently discovered that it's better to embrace than to annoy a motivated hacking community -- customers who tend to be a company's most dedicated fans and evangelists.
Good news?

its a maybe. maybe they will launch our froyo locked, maybe it'll be open. we never know.
i just read this also. this could be great news or another terrible taunt whih leads to nothing.
im not gonna get my hopes up just yet.
available Q1 of 2046, stay tuned! lol

Sounds like a PR stunt to quell the immediate situation before waiting for it to blow over.

I dont believe in manufaturer, i believe in XDA dev's..... this a "cold water" not a hope for us.
I hope this isn't just some PR bull and moto actually enables us to load custom kernels.
That press release says nothing about unlocking the bootloader, only that they will help devs which could mean anything!

LMFAO!!!
i dnt believe motorolsh!t will do that(unlocking the bootloader)
I so love my new HTC Desire! couldnt stand this situation anymore....! sorry guys...
It is just the usual PR crap which companies like them give when they screw up on the social networking front. The "..buy elsewhere.." was just a such screw up. A Royal one I would say!
They are now trying to calm down the situation by giving us this crap..
I think it's just a excuse about the bad comments in youtube video, nothing more than that.

That seems most likely but perhaps the fallout and bad press from that will push them to do what they should have done long ago, free the bootloader in some form so we can get custom ROMs on it.

Yes, I really want to see this happening, but I don't have any hope about Motorola opening the bootloader.
If they do, ok, excelent news to the community, to all developers that will make even better ROMs and for all of us that have a Motorola phone. We can see the quality of alternative ROMs for Motorola Milestone today as example. It's obvious that the only limitation is the bootloader, so the quality can be massively improved if we can change and optimize the kernel.
But I think all people here are already tired from Motorola's position about his costumers: Censorship on comments (youtube and motorola forums), censorship on criticism (even the very good ones, Motorola does not seem to care about the opinion of his costumers), cease and desist in community cases like the ROM of Droid X and sites with roms (that its very stupid IMHO)... and the list goes on...
By the way, my only hope is, if that happens and I have not exchanged my phone yet, good.. I'll make good use of it. But honestly? I have now my last phone from Motorola.
Am I missing something? Forgive my ignorance, but what is "locked up" about the bootloader? I'm running CM6 along with the overclocked CM6 kernel, and there are tons of other custom ROMs out for the Droid as it stands. What is restricted by Motorola?

Milestone users cannot use custom kernels. All the AOSP ROMs still have to use the SAME kernel, supplied by Mot. They lock it to the bootloader. This means problems trying to compile modules and customer kernels and no way to patch bugs.
It is much more work for devs to get stuff done for the milestone than other phone (htc comes to mind).
Examples of issues: battery life, phone sleeping, waiting for compatible kernel or hack for new android versions, swap support, vpn support, other filesystem support... the list goes on.
But you allowed to be happy with your phone. Not everybody needs these things...

He has a very good point. Where other android device builders seem to be promoting development (Huawei excluded, theyre miser's just like Motorola), this company seems to be more prominent on the restriction of development on their devices.
One very good reason for this is that Motorola has been such a huge phone developer for such a long time, that they have probably let it go to their head. Now instead of saying "our consumers said they need this", they're sayin "we think they really only need this." I've used Motorola phones for about 8 years now, and I would DEFINITELY say someone forgot that their customers put them where their at.
I agree. Someone needs to get out there and give them a taste of Good Customer Service. I dont think restricting dev's is a great marketing idea, or revenue booster anyways. BUt then again, to each, his own.
This is PR.Nothing more.
Know motorola they do not update РСТ(Russian legal)Milestone, they do not
need to unlock this crap bootloader.

State of Development :)

For those of you that have been around these parts for a while, you may remember the State of Development updates that good ol' Gsleon3 used to update us with. These came for us at a time when development for the Vivid seemed to be at a standstill, and for those of you that were here, you remember why. For those of you who don't, let me catch you up a little (and I apologize for the bad feelings that this may drum up, but I don't want anything to get out of control again). So grab a beer and a snack, this may be a long one
It was about April, and development for the Holiday was still in its infancy. There were a few good ROMs being released, and generally, it was a good place to be. Then accusations of stealing other's work, accusations of corrupt moderators, and all around child-like behavior started, and it became the downfall of the Holiday forum at XDA. ROM threads started closing. Then came the bickering. Then the Devs left. Then the users began to play the blame game, and the "let me try to whine my way to what I want" game. All the best devs left and opened up shop in their own little corners of the internet (and I can't blame them one bit), and development for the device was no longer centralized. There were/are still AWESOME ROMs available for this device, just not on XDA. This always made me a little sad. As painful of a place as XDA (or any internet forum for that matter) can be at times, there's sooooo much good information crammed into one site that it has always been my one-stop shop, but that wasn't true any longer. I settled in, I found a home, but I kept a close eye on what else was happening across the interweb's Holiday community. I liked to keep my eye on one project specifically, synergy's CM10 project, because who wouldn't want JellyBean, right?
Now, a little more information for those of you who weren't around.. The original CM10 thread was opened at another site in July, where the project started. Syn put a lot of time and effort into it, but in the end, found it to be not worth his time to continue on a project he didn't see possible to ever be finished (mainly due to the ATT in-call mic issue and video issues), and again, who can blame him? He abandoned the project at the beginning of August. This is where mg picked the project up, and continued it with a few fixes himself, before somehow we caught the attention of h8rift. h8 has been awesome - cleaning up our trees, getting things in their proper home, and powering through anything that gets in his way It's so great to have him around.
Myself, up until October, had only ever had experience with things like making boot animations, icons, editing .xmls in .apks, and some slight .smali edits. Thanks to mg's excellent guide and a crapton of Googling, I learned out how to compile/build cm from source. Then I thought, "I wonder if I could do the same for other JB flavors?" So guess what? I tried, and it worked. Every single question I had along the way (with the exception of a few Ubuntu and git specific questions), were answered by a thread here at XDA. Cool, right?
I am very excited to see new ROMage out for this device...as I'm sure anyone who was here through the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012" would agree, I was pretty sure what we had was all we were ever going to see. Which again, would have been OK, cause there are some great ROMs out there, but I've never been the kind of dude to settle in on the same ROM for too long - that's why I came to XDA in the first place. Now as I'm sure everyone can see, through collaboration, this project is making HUGE progress! I cannot thank mg and h8 enough for keeping it going. This brings me to my last point...
I encourage everyone to participate, and offer suggestions, and share information - that is, after all, what a developer's forum should be about. The wealth of knowledge that's available at XDA is out of this world, but sometimes hiding deep within the threads, filled by off-topic chatter and users who have way to huge a sense of entitlement. Please always keep in mind that the things you're getting here are free. Hours upon hours upon hours of work go into these projects, just to be shared for very little asked in return. Wait, we ask for something in return? Yes - READ, SEARCH, and SEARCH AGAIN before posting. Like I said, there's already a wealth of knowledge here that's incomparable to other Android forums on the web, but yes, sometimes it can be trying to find that information. But it's not impossible. Also - keep an eye on the issues list. There are bugs. There will probably always be bugs. And as long as there are, they will continue to be squished to the best of our ability (though h8's ability is far beyond mine, so let's especially be nice to him )
In closing - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not let this place become what it was before. So far I feel like the atmosphere around here has been a lot better, but I know how easy it can be for it to slip back to where it was. So be respectful, don't ask for ETAs, and be thankful for what we have - cause what we now have is a TON more options that we had before.
I remember the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012"... it was ugly, didn't even want to visit the site half the time. But things are looking up and I'm glad I didn't return my vivid thirty days after the release date like so many did.

Well said homeslice. Although I haven't been as active in my participation I got the Vivid on day 1 and am really happy to see development where it is today. There were many points I thought the device was basically dead and time and time again it was revived with new life. Hopefully the few left can make sure not to repeat drama mistakes of the past.
And great job on going from a reader to a developer, very well done.
Why is my xda premium app only let me reply/post on certain sections of forums and not development??:banghead:

Sorry but we don't approve of the use of our work by non-team members and do not condone the porting of any of our roms to other devices for various reasons. One of those reasons is these roms will never meet the same level of quality and support our users have become accustomed to as such, these roms will never be allowed on xda and will also be refused Venom Hub access.

That's exactly what I want but there is a language barrier, instead of releasing could you try to make it legit here with your team? Please I know there are really good developers and they can find how to make it legit is all I ask I do not want to make an issue out of trying to help others with this device, this device is capable of running this Rom flawless just like the one x or rezound which in fact is is the same device but cdma could you help us or assign this port to one of your team members?

Let's just drop it. The villec2 should get its jellybean sense+ update soon, and maybe we can port it. Or maybe we can get the Koreans to share their secret. In the meantime, it appears to be elsewhere, so get it there if you must

So, the options are:
1. We remove all of our tweaks from the framework files of a kanged port of one of our roms so that you can use it as a base
2. You find a Korean translator to ask the one who got data working how he did it.
Let's not start more xda drama the vivid forum has already been thru this. Either find someone who speaks Korean to ask to translate or have them remove all of their tweaks like they ask. The vivid has come to far now to start drama over a sense 4 ROM

While everyone is waiting for their phones, I thought I would start a thread where we could just talk without worrying about going off-topic. If you want to talk about how other phones compare to the HTC First, rant about rotten fruit and the vegetables that use them, etc, than this is the place.

? people start the placeholder index threads (they are closed) and then when the device is released their thread is opened again and that is not fair. if such threads are opened again then what is the use of closing them at the first place. it would be better if you delete any placeholder threads when they are created.
just a request to mods that you delete placeholders.
thanks

To be honest I hadn't decided completely. I understand that such threads are going to be opened even though they are really off-topic and have nothing to do with the phones. In some cases depending on the quality of the post and the attitude of the member, I might undelete/reopen it, but I might not since the only real purpose in opening such a thread now is to gain thanks for doing nothing of real benefit and I don't think that type of behavior is generally to be rewarded. Especially when it is really of no benefit whatsoever. Not like a placeholder for a [GUIDE] or something actually potentially useful, especially if done by a well-known member with a good history.
Thank you,

Not yet. But according to The Verge, the One Mini will be released in the US (AT&T) on Friday. Hopefully, some dedicated Dev might be able to port its (4.2) ROM to the First - or use it to help get CM or other ASOP working.
some pics i took
i think the htc first is a sexy looking thing, and decided to take some pictures using a background defocus mode. didnt quite work out since the camera doesnt recognize PHONES as a face or anything to focus on...so i did the best i could and came up with this.
i had to compress the pcitures, originaly each one was around 3.5 - 4 megabytes in size and was around 2000x1400 in size or something around there. in otherwords. huge.
R.I.P. to that CM development that we had going on a few weeks ago

That's a fine looking piece of hardware you've got there (;
I regret not getting the black now because the red model strains like crazy and I've tried everything from putting it in a bowl of toothpaste, alcohol, baking soda, and soap to let it set in the freezer over night but no results

thing is guys. Rashed can do it. like he could do it blindfolded and port like anything no joke ive seen this happen. but what he needs is like a ton of spare time. being in highschool is busy stuff. im just fresh out of there and into college, barely find some time to sit down and ruu my phone cause i use it for like school and stuff.
so if we all have patience either he will do it or someone else, so dont get sad.
also, some plain logic. the more we wait the more people buy the first and the more support we get.
Sadly the First is discontinued so not much people will be buying it unless they are looking for it specifically lol.

To Root or not to Root, That is the Question.

I recieved my One on Friday, and been debating whether or not to root since I cut the seal.
If you rooted, convince me.
If you kept it stock convince me to.

I played around with my one for about a week before I rooted. If you have to be convinced then you should just stay stock until you get bored... If that's possible

Why do you suggest that I stay stock?
I am not a n00b or anything... I am just leary of HTC knowing what I am doing (i.e. voiding my warranty)
Yeah Dude, no one in here will "convince " you to root or not. If you are asking that question especially in this Forum you should not root and stay stock.
I just rooted mine to test out that logo to menu button but I couldn't because of the update.I'm just rooted waiting on a perfect rom with the updated base

LOL Definitely a NOOB, less that 50 post is a noob, besides HTC doesn't care what you do with your phone, In fact.. they give you the tools to unlock the bootloader on htcdev.
My advice ..stay stock. and have fun customizing your device on mycolorscreen.com

I rooted after a week, but I could personally care less if you root yours or not. If you aren't new, then you should already know what to do.
Personally I think it is a little deeper than the question you pose. To me it is all about pushing Android itself to better places and thus having wonderful developers in here doing just that. Supporting the developers as they help mold Android into the best it can be is what it is all about. HTC and other manufacturers do take note of what is going on by the developers on this website and thus, it is helping to mold Android to better things. That is just my humble feelings on that.
In saying all of that, I have not even rooted yet...LOL!!! I always root and support the devs but I will feel way more comfortable when that 4.2 update hits this phone to do so. I thought we had it for a sec there with that first update. Not real sure why I feel this way other than feeling all warm a cozy and to settle in on a particular rom and kernnel. I am not what you would call a flash junkie so when I flash something I like it to be at least based on the latest Android version if possible. And I am a dummy at this dev stuff so there ya go my 2 cents. :silly:

Custom Development for M7spr - Discussion, testing and help

This is a discussion thread for all things custom; Building steps and tips, problem solving and issue discussion. All questions and/or comments are welcome. Be aware, although I build and customize ROMs, I am not a professional developer and cannot promise a solution for your problem. But, hopefully, we can work together to come up with practical solutions for any problems here at m7spr.
So..The things you were shut down on. Were they CM related, or Sense stuff?
Did they involve you working solo, or with a team? Give more details, get the word out.

I really am leery of pointing fingers at specific people because I'm new here and don't want to make a name for myself as a whiner. But, basically it is both. The custom ROMs I am working on have all been built before by me on other devices, so that's not the issue. I have inquired about possibly collaborating with other devs on some Sense related stuff and was looking into why there was no official or unofficial release of the current CM10.2. The sense stuff really isn't my bag as much, but i was/am interested. Others are working on the CM, but with no official release in play, no one wants to put theirs out. I have built it successfully, but have no intention of trying to lay it out there when other devs have been working on it before I got here. My thing is this: when I got tired of waiting for devs to come up with new things, I was told to put up or shut up. It was good advice; I have no coding experience specifically, but I like to learn and have been successful at not only compiling and maintaining custom builds, but also starting 'Learn to do it yourself' threads in two different device forums. I like to learn and compile and share. That's it. I don't need (or want) attention or grateful fans or any of that crap. All I want to do is open the doors for more builds and more users getting off their asses and building for themselves. It seems like a win-win to me, but I feel resistance and it is disappointing. I will get off my soapbox now
I typically touch base with any dev who is the creator/maintainer of any ROM I am interested in pursuing. My experience has been more of a quick 'try it out and see what you get' response or 'it can't be done'. This is after I have asked for not only a blessing, but for relevant information and possibly assistance. Maybe I am just hitting up devs who are already frustrated and don't want someone like me asking a bunch of questions, I don't know....

I looked your thread up and I think we'd get along great. Anybody who says 'if you don't like me, GOOD' is someone I wanna hang with. It's also funny you should mention helping with that sense version because that's exactly what I was trying to do. Sense aint even my bag, but I was going to look into it from the SVD side to see what I could learn. Maybe I just rubbed that guy the wrong way or something. Regardless, I can't promise how much help I will actually be, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Tell me what you need and the right places to look and I'll do whatever I can. Be cool

do you have google hangout?
I think one issue is that there is an update to 4.3 looking for the Sprint One. This will undoubtely contain new radios and firmware that will help our phones run on 4.3+. Since this is a know update, many devs have decided to forego work on the the current 4.1.2 Sense ROMs. Some are working on the 4.2.2 Sense ROM, but with no leak, or Sprint version it is much harder work. Also, there is only source for up to 1.29. The source from the 1.31 update is not available and it has caused issues with ROMs based on that update.
Personally I don't get your complaint though. There is a lot of development and a wide selection of ROMs available from Stock Android 4.1 to 4.3 to Stock Sense, to heavily themed Sense ROMs. What exactly is not available that you want?

This really wasn't meant to be some complaint thread with a bunch of whining; just the opposite, really. I just wanted feedback on how I am perceiving things around here. I'm cool with being told I have it wrong; was hoping for it actually. And you pointed out exactly what I mean in part. Sense this and stock that is the rule of the day here. That's ok. Everyone is allowed to like whatever they want and if sense and stock are the most wanted builds then so be it. But, I am a self-proclaimed customization junkie, for better or for worse. Personally, I like more fully custom ROM choices and have been beating my head against the wall trying to get some Beanstalk love here but without success to this point. BS is already set in 4.3 and matched with CMs 10.2 releases, so I'm stumped. If you have knowledge, I would be happy to show you some of my errors. I do think you make a great point about the whole place being in flux due to the impending 4.3 release. Like I said before, I just want to open up some development doors and get more interest in development in general. Maybe I have hit up the wrong devs or caught them at bad times. It happens.

Part of the issue might be that users are afraid of using Cm as it has a nasty habit of bricking phones that no one of notoriety has looked into, acknowledged, or found a solution to.

A couple of people developed a "consensus" that it had been fixed. then 2 more people bricked their phones. ALLEGEDLY the CPU has a tendency to over clock itself and lock at 1.7 Ghz
This is all fine and dandy yet no one can figure out why or how to stop it.

I saw one guy who was addressing it and taking names and such, but then I guess it just faded away. Do you know of ongoing issues like this? Can all of the bricks be undoubtedly proven to be from no other cause? I think that would be the defining characteristic of lack of support; difficulty in proving cause. My build of CM10.2 runs fine as long as I don't try to change the font with Font Installer. And I am reasonably certain that it isn't from CM all by itself. I have the same issue with Illusion ROM 4.2.2. Anybody know why we can't change the font? My thread; I can change topic if I want to

It is the only common factor in permanent bricks. Phone gets hot, phone wont charge. All other "bricks" are user induced because people did not understand what S-Off meant, what wiping in TWRP means, what GSM means etc etc.
So how many confirmed permanent bricks and when was the last? Has anyone proven a cause? Contacted HTC or CM or Sprint? If there were twenty cases with only 5 confirmed, then it isn't that big from a larger standpoint. See what I mean? That would explain what you see as a lack of support? Has this happened to you?

Why does there seem to be very little development going on here and why is the development that is taking place so closely guarded? I thought everyone wanted more choices and new options..... I see that there is current and ongoing 10.2 development (hell, I've even built it), but no one wants to release it. I'm hearing that the last guy who did that got banned. So, if everyone is waiting for OFFICIAL builds to be released first, why are there none being officially worked on? Two times in the last three weeks I have inquired about wanting to work on some new development and have either been told straight out not to release or been effectively threatened with reporting before I have even begun an attempt. I don't know if maybe there has been a rash of jerks who are trying to claim ownership of work that does not belong to them or what, but I've never seen as much negativity about new builds in any thread I have been a part of. I want to claim ownership of nothing; I only want to open doors. I guess I'll just work on things for my own use and leave this forum to the guys currently running it. HMPH

You could build us a GSM version ROM that works on the sprint HTC One. You'd be a hero if you could do that. We've already unlocked our phones and are able to connect to the ATT / TMO but only manually. When the signal is lost it seems to still be looking to auto connect to sprint...I would think this should be a simple setting software but I know nothing about phone ROMs.
