Wifi sleep/always on - Samsung Focus S

Ok, It seems WP7 won't set wifi to 'always on' unless the device is plugged in. This drives me nutts when using htpc remote apps on my phone and just seems like an obvious feature to build in to the OS. I understand MS's 'battery life' reasoning initially, but there should be an easy way for power users to manipulate this setting...amirite??
Has anyone found a way/hack/regedit to manually set this? Or maybe a lesser known app floating about the interwebz you might care to share with us
Thanks,
-n

I add my voice to yours. Such a simple yet needed feature that needs to be addressed.

download the latest versionof skype from the marketplace, open tthe app and set up yr acccount, make a call, and minimise the app ...
the wifi will stay on
when u move away from the wifi area and try to make a call to skype, skype starts to use 3G and the wifi will turn off ( back to default behaviorur)

You mean you want to turn off the radio?
Simple method is to go to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Airplane mode. NOTE: This turns off all radios, including WiFi.
If you want a icon to do this, go to the Market and download AnyCut and make a shortcut to Airplane mode.
no not turn off the radio , just close all open connection. cuz i can't see if there's some connection open !!!!!!
A little more description on your dilema would be apreciated.
Who charged you 55 euros?
Are you talking about data transmissions?
If your phone is on and you have service with some provider AND haven't installed any apps that require streaming data, you should not have any "open connections" as you say.

No need for a task manager as the device closes programs on its own.
To disable all data connections use anycut to phone info (like said above) and then menu -> more and you can disable data connection for just that time or disable it on boot to disable forever.
If you were charged 55 euros for using data then you need to get a different phone as this phone is meant for an always on connection so it is connected 24/7
Well I have the same issue. There are no affordable dataplan in the country I live in so letting any application use as much network as it feels like is not an option.
Sadly the phone does not have a way to control who's allowed to use the radio/network or anything for that matter past the installation time. So if pong3d has been installed with full network access you're screwed it can wake up at any time and start streaming whatever it wants from and to your phone. It can even clog your bandwidth and make your browsing suck.
I understand the whole fully connected device thing, but I still think this is a major flaw as users end-up with limited control over what application is doing what. There should be a way to disable data connection, like disabling wifi.
And ultimately there should be a way to manage the permission of the various app. I want to run pong3d but there is no way I'm giving it Contact Access and SMS access and "service that cost you money". Or I want a fair warning "accept/deny" whenever the application tries...
It also happens that people travel (like me) to other countries. And when traveling I use local pre-paid SIM card to avoid roaming fees. I don't need gtalk and MarioSimulator (yeah it does check for update when you launch it) to burn through my credit just because they think they can.
Since we had networking on phone they have been asking you if you wanted to allow the application to connect "Always/Never/Just this time". If Android expect to be used on other devices (so other providers, other countries, other dataplan) that feature will be needed. And the all or nothing attitude towards permissions when installing an app must be changed.
In the mean time, I suggest the original poster do what I do.. Delete all your APN settings and re-add them when needed. In my case just changing one letter in the APN seems to be enough.
my 2p.

I completely understand where you are coming from and I think once the OS comes out of beta it will be a lot better. In the meantime I think it is easier to do the method I did above as it just turns off the data connection and doesn't change any other settings. And you can turn it on or off on the fly.

Don't mean to derail the converstaion but... Google, out of BETA? ROFLOL!!!
That'll be the end of life as we know it!
Anyways... going back to the subject. Your trick is neat and I don't need it (T-mobile customer with unlimited data) but still usefull.
@ mrboyd:
As neoobs stated, you'll have to do that workaround untill Google does add such a feature, but unless you give enough stink (complain) about it, they won't listen.
You could go here to developers and see if anyone is doing something about it and "ask" for such a "feature"
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers
Also, where are you located? Who's your service provider? What data plans do they have there, or don't?
On the same topic... if someone notices they have no data connection and want to enable it follow the same directions. I did this the other night when tmobiles towers were down. It helped me get connected again.
Does this thing works? I have tried playing with it a little bit and it didn't seem to do much. I'll give it another shot.

Using Push Internet

I just got my TD2 yesterday. Been trying to figure out the settings for the push internet, but i can't seem to find the option to use WiFi connection instead of data connection.
Also i realised that the scheduling doesnt allow to set the minute only the hour.
Does anyone have this problem?
No one has any problem using this feature?
If you have WiFi on it should just use it I guess? Otherwise what you can do is setup your preferred connection not to be the mobile web one so it doesn't try and connect to the net over GPRS/3G.
I tried using Wifi, but it doesnt work. I still need to manually pull the sites.
When your phone goes into standby the WIFI connection turns off to save the battery, so unless you have your phone set to never turn off and keep WIFI active all the time its unlikely that it will use WIFI to push internet pages to you. Very little point doing it that way since you'd never have the phone last long enough to get out of the house in the morning.
Oh I reckon I know what might be wrong. You also need to change the schedules of when the phone polls for sites. You do it by day and stuff and do a start time. Once you visit each site once then that'll start the ticker so to speak. Mine autodownloaded at the set intervals after that.
Thanks Shuflie, u have a good point.. there is no point updating it via wifi. It needs to use a data connection. Thanks
DaBountyHunter: Thanks for the advice.. but i really think the problem is that i dont have a data plan with my telco.. i cant rely on WIFI since it disables whenever the phone goes into standby.
hi,
i'm a little bit confused about this feature!
i addet 4 sites to my list and if i got it right, there is a grey arrow if its updating and a green if its finished! is that correct?
but, when i surf on a site with a green arrow i can only see the main page, because if i tip any link on this it says error!
thats a total mess, the deep of min one link is essential...
do i something wrong or is this feature only a dream!??
I believe it only updates the pages on the main page. It doesnt save the entire site (i wished it did) cos it seems rather redundant when it only saves the main page.
hopefully someone can make a fix that it also loads the linked pages but i think it takes up too much memory/battery life and for example on news sites you only need the headlines, and if you want to read the article you'll have to wait a bit.
(for the Dutch, use tweakers.net/nieuws on your phone, it loads the articles instead of headlines)
well then in my opinion this feature is senseless!
quite true.. senseless.. might as well just use RSS feeds.
I still haven't received my TD2 (seems like it takes time for other languages as I'm looking for a french one which should be shipped on the 8th of May) but I still have a question regarding push internet feature.
What happens when roaming? Is there a way to disable it while on another network? Like a "disable while roaming" feature? Knowing the fees for data roaming, I don't want to spend money every time I'm going in another country...
yes, there is a 'disable when roaming' feature.

i tried that, also tried many other things but i am almost defintely sure the 'add push page' is simply a bookmark button. the main conclusion for this is that i dont get any notification of the 'auto pull' and it still attempts to connect to HSDPA when opening one of these push pages
I stopped using it because it only updates the top page.
Where are the oush internet settings on rom official rom version 2.53?

Connection manager for WM6.1?

I have stock rom, PL, and I've been going over customizing my system, installing good software and in the end I got most of the free stuff at reccomended software thread even though I didn't follow it. That means your reccomendations are approved by me. Anyway...
Is there any software for windows mobile, paid or free, which installs additional connection manager/overrides default one?
I would like it to have some of those options:
-maintain different WiFi hotspots and remember their passowrds(default doesn't seem to remember the pass, it always forgets my home hotspot password...)
-ability to tell 3G etc. to cancel connection and not try to reconnect. Right now when I by mistake turn on some internet app it tries to connect, when I cancel the connecting bubble will jump out before I'm able to close the app, and it's really hard to close the app without connecting...
-being finger friendly... like most of rest of my phone now... Anyway, I can't imagine much apps to be less finger friendly than default manager so it doesn't matter that much
And basically the more options the better I've looked over net and looked trough XDA with google but I didn't find anything appropriate.
10 Button Comm Manager
Have you looked at the WM 10 Button Comm Manager by Dutty. It won't help you to remember passwords, but it has a button to turn off 3G. When you disable 3G, it won't connect to a site with 3G again until you re-enable the connection.
Well, I just tried it, but I don't really see the point. Even if I turned it off my programs would connect with Edge. I pay for the ammount of data transferred and I don't think changing to edge helps anything except for slower speed xD
Edit: I found something like that: http://www.maxprograms.pl/plik,510.html
I will try it out later, but it might, just might, do some of things I want.

[Q] Two questions

First, why when an app needs internet and its not on, doesn't the app offer to turn it on?
Second, why when turning on blue tooth from the home screen doesn't BT just connect to the device available (on and paired). If more than one fits the criteria, it'd be great to get a list and be able to choose the one you want.
Mostly curiosity, but I must say that BT has been a pain in the butt for a very long time.
Thanks.
If i remember correctly gameloft games offered to turn on wifi with licence check or data download. So everything depends on an app, but none of them will turn internet on w/o your knowledge.
As for the bluetooth i don't know why but it was like this in every mobile phone i'v had so far.

How to get Tasker to *actually* connect/disconnect VPN?

I have a problem with my recently purchased Tasker app. I tried posting on the official Tasker forum (https://tasker.helprace.com/s1-general/problems/top) but after I would click submit, nothing would come up. If anyone knows how to get in contact with the developers other than leaving a negative review on the Play Store that would be much appreciated.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S9 (not rooted) running whatever the latest version OS (Pie I want to say?).
I have a simple Profile setup to Connect to VPN when Wifi is connected, and Disconnect from VPN when Wifi is disconnected (as an Exit task) using the OpenVPN Tasker Plugin.
On rare occasion, everything works as expected.
Unfortunately, the majority of the time, it will indeed recognize the correct state (Wifi Connected), however, it will not connect to the VPN. When I go into Tasker, I see the Profile is green text, and if I go to More>Run Log I can see that it says something to the extent of:
"Active 2 Wifi Connected" then "Start TaskService" then "Running 3 VPN Connect" then "OK 3.1 VPN Connect.com.ffrog8.openVpnTaskerPlugin\n***\n*!" then "ExitOK 3 VPN Connect" then "Stop TaskService" (this is all in reverse order, since I think the run log puts the newest events at the top, but this is how I read them from bottom up).
Tasker even says 1 Task running on the notification bar on my lock screen. However the VPN is not connected. If I go into Tasker, turn off that profile, then turn it on again (via the toggle switch on the right hand side), the VPN will connect as expected and the run log will say the same exact thing.
Likewise for the Exit Task - when I disconnect from the network Tasker seems to recognize the state just fine (evident in Run Log and notification icon in lock screen), however my VPN remains connected (well my guess is it must disconnect for a short period as I transition from Wifi to 4g).
I have tried waiting a while to see if it's just a time issue, but I could wait hours and it will never trigger one way or the other (VPN Connect or VPN Disconnect). I have tried different Wifi networks. The Wifi State Active = "Any". In Android Settings>Apps>Tasker>Battery the toggle for "Allow background activity" is set to on, Optimize Battery Usage is set to off. Likewise for OpenVpn Tasker Plugin.
*Joao or anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks.
Troubleshooting = Because a Piece of Code went
Sorry to say that it looks like I am the 1st reply, as I have no real training in coding or programming myself.
I too recently began to play with such though with the intent to install it on some family member's devices ? However, like you I have not been able to get my desired automation regular enough to share it. When I 1st downloaded Tasker (I think) it had something about a "community" to share & get help with as well as more.
Trying to be helpful I ran a quick search for the specific site & as usual, Google had to go overboard with the results. Still hoping this will help you sooner as they all focus on that particular program:
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/tutorial-using-the-new-auth-system-with-tasker/82423
Just wondering if all the changes to Android OS as a whole may also have an affect on something minor such as whatever we choose to do with "automation" programming? Have seen throughout various post's & news that sort of thing....
for any other poor soul with the same problem, I read a couple of obscure comments on the interweb that the OpenVPN plugin for Tasker is no longer functioning, and all must be run through the Open VPN Connect app (NOT Open VPN for Android app) using intents. I found a guide once, and am testing it now and will report back if it works more reliably. Thank you Lone wolf for your reply.
just to update the poor souls, using intents like I said seems to work more reliably in terms of connecting to VPN. The only problem is if you go out of wifi range, it disconnects, but then are back within wifi range quickly (like somewhere with bad wifi signal), it will not connect again for some reason.
