I want to restore a nandroid backup I made via CWR. Trouble is, when I boot into recovery (using the method of holding down both volume keys while pressing power), I don't have an option for backup/recovery. I only have "reboot system now", "apply updates from sd card", "wipe data/factory reset", and "wipe chach partition".
I can't boot into recovery using the bootstrapper because I'm stuck on the boot animation, which is why I need to do the recovery in the first place.
How do I restore a nandroid backup on the Bionic?
Answered this myself after piecing together various bits of knowledge. Posting here as a reference for anyone else with the same problem.
If you're bootlooping, you won't be able to get the the bootstrapped CWM recovery menu, only the basic one with four entries on it. There's no getting around that at this point, so suck it up, flash the stock back, root, and restore your nandroid backup using Bootstrapper.
So, basically you're looking at an hour long process if your ROM decides to screw up. Consider that your heads up.

I was trying to go from Drizzy's touchflo 3D to JACxDrizzy's ROM.
I have fat32, ext3, and linux-swap, all the appropriate size
So, i followed the usual steps:
boot to recovery, nandroid backup (i have 1.4 recovery btw), wipe, flash, boot.
Except, the phone got stuck in a bootloop. So i booted to fastboot, then used the "fastboot flash ____ ____img" commands to restore.
Also a bootloop.
I thought of using the 1.4's nandroid restore function, but that does not work since after backing up, I moved the backup to my desktop, changed the folder name, and deleted the backup from my phone. I tried to adb push the files back in, but recovery still said that the backups were not in the phone.
So I wiped everything, including ext3, then tried again, this time going back to my previous build, Drizzy's touchflo 3d. It seemed to be working - i went to recovery and selected the flash update.zip option. Then the options disappeared, as usual, and the text (showing the progress of the flashing) began to show up. However, the phone froze after the first two lines of text.
I decided to wait. Eventually, my phone shut down. I tried to boot my phone in all 3 ways (standard, recovery, and fastboot) but none of them worked. The red LED blinked twice and the phone has no response.
How do I get my G1 to boot, and after that, how do i get nandroid to work?
EDIT: Ok I feel stupid now. The phone just ran out of battery. But the question still stands: How do i get nandroid to work?
since you nuked your ext3 your nandroid probably will not work because the hero rom will be looking for the files necessary for it on your ext3 but they are not there so it will bootloop. try flashing whatever rom you want to with a cleanly formatted card and see if it will boot up.
I don't know why, by Drizzy's builds always require EXT formatting, but JAC's don't. So you got a bootloop because you didn't wipe your ext3. I always just use Cyan's recovery to restore a nandroid backup. If that flails I guess you have to start over.
I know i will get killed for this as there are loads of guides to nandroid out there but...
I can't work out how to do a simple 'latest back up' recovery. as listed in this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719&highlight=nandroid
Recovering to Your Nandroid Backup
Option 1 (Without a Computer)
Note: This recovery will only recover your latest nandroid backup (the one with the newest timestamp)
Make sure u made a backup and its in the nandroid folder on your sdcard
Boot up your phone in recovery (Turn off, then turn on while holding Home button)
Scroll down to "restore latest backup" and press on it
Let it work
Once its done reboot your phone and you backup will now be restored!

Click to collapse
But when i boot in recovery all i see is the option to restart, make a recovery image, wipe, install the update file and hide the menu - no scroling and no restore.
Im lost!
What recovery do you have?
flash to cyan recovery 1.4
Hi Everyone,
This is my first time attempting to root my nexus one.
I used the One-click root application posted on these forums and the ROM manager to try and install Cyanogen 6.0RC2. Now my phone boots into the loading screen with the particles flying together to form an x, followed by the same animation in blue instead of the android colors, with a skateboarding android icon in the center. About 10 seconds later, it seems to fail and go back to the multi-colored animation. This loop continues forever until I yank the battery.
How do I get back to a working environment?
Did you install the froyo baseband?
Did you have 2.2 on before you installed CM6?
Did you wipe as is recommended by Cyanogen?
Try installing CM6 again THE PROPER WAY... read their post on the forums and then report.
I already had Froyo on here. How do I bust out of this boot cycle to try again?
pull and reinstall battery and boot to recovery
a boot loop is normally caused by an incorrect flash, either by the recovery just being weird or the phone not correctly wiping prior to flashing. Did you make backup before you flashed?
If so here is what you do.
Boot into recovery
go to wipe
wipe "data"
wipe "cache"
and wipe "dalvik-cahe" (so long as you only select these three your sd card will remain untouched)
(if you want to resstore back to stock)
go to restore/backup
hit restore nandroid
select the restore point
(if you want to continue to install CM6)
go to "install zip from sd car"
select the zip
once done install the gapps zip (if you donwloaded it)
reboot
Done
How do I get it to boot into recovery?
When I remove the battery, and then power it on, it goes right back into the boot loop.
Nevermind. It's working now. I think I forgot to wipe first.
Thanks so much for your help, everyone!

Hey guys,
Last night I installed ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery on my Roger's Samsung Captivate and proceeded to watch some YouTube videos on how it works. It would appear that this app has made flashing extremely easy. Too easy one might say.
My question is: Is flashing via ROM Manager safe? Better? Or not, compared to the "old school" method?
Any feedback on ROM Manager or flashing in general for my i896 Captivate would be much appreciated!

I'd say Rom Manager is downright essential, but your mileage may vary. Besides the uber easy flashes there are a number of utility type things it does, not least of which is it gives us cappy users the ability to make nandroid backups.
As far as safe? As safe as any other method I guess. If you do your homework and the Rom's cook has his/her shizzle together (and most of them do.) you should be good using it to flash.
You'll find with some of the newer kernels that a modified CWM is actually replacing the stock 2e/3e recovery also, so it's not a terrible idea to get familiar with it a bit first.
Just some thoughts, hope they help.
Thanks for the reply dude!
Does ROM Manager automatically present users with the option to backup their existing ROM before proceeding with a flash?
I attempted to back up my current ROM with ROM Manager. It rebooted into a recovery menu, but non of them gave me the option to back up. Just wipe and reboot (can't remember the exact options). Is it possible the Captivate is no supported? How would I enable nandroid for Captivate?

You open the app and tap flash clockwork recovery, select your phone, and it will proceed to reboot into recovery mode. At this time, you move down to reinstall packages, and it will then load clockwork recovery. It is from there that you can make your nandroid backup.

What he said. It sometimes chokes on loading itself. It puts a file named update.zip on your sdcard. When you get to the blue menu (2e recovery) you select reinstall packages and it should load right up. Sometimes it will reboot and get stuck there again. Just do it again and it'll come up.
Yes, before you flash through rom manager it asks you if you want to do a backup. You'll find over time tho that you'll just go straight to clockworkmod and skip the whole rom manager thing. At least I did. And if you go to one of the kernels with the modified cwm in place of the recovery menu rebooting to recovery with rom manager will bring you to the wrong one. The modified has extra stuff like lag fixes and that sort of thing that the original cwm doesn't have.
Yeah. So far, I find it easier to just use ROM Manager to boot into Recovery and do everything else from there.
I like how it only presents you with ROMs available for your specific device. I look forward to the list populating for the Captivate. It's currently empty.

the very first time i did this clicked reboot instead of reinstall packages. (i have fat thumbs) now every time i do 'tap flash clockwork recovery' instead of rebooting it just says 'successfully downloaded clockworkmod recovery'. how am i supposed to reinstall if i cant get to the option to do so?
im using a rooted captivate.
"Reinstall Packages" is in Android Recovery. When you perform the action "Flash Clockwork Recovery", you are downloading update.zip (which is Clockwork). "Reinstall packages" will install that update.zip and bring you into Clockwork.
So for you nawlage, now you can select "Reboot into Recovery" in ROM Manager, and your phone should boot into Android Recovery (blue text). Once there, reinstall packages (you'll probably have to do this twice), and you'll be brought to Clockwork Recovery (green text). If for WHATEVER reason "Reboot into Recovery" isn't working for you, use the 3-button combo to boot into Android Recovery.
thanks a load. i had just read this... posted by big99gt:
After these steps you won't really have to "hack" your phone lol. Root your phone and download Rom Manager from the Android market...then have it flash a recovery (the first selection at the top) choose your device when prompted. Now after that finishes select "reboot into recovery" and as the above post states you may need to select "reinstall packages" (I did). Once that goes through, you'll see your new custom recovery menu. DO A NANDROID BACKUP of your current Rom as soon as you can....then (as long as your current rom isn't messed up, if its stock your fine) from there on out you can play as much as you want with very little risk of bricking your phone. There are others who can explain it better but your stuck with me till they chime in lol. Its a very easy process and nearly foolproof.

..and did just that. and it takes me to the clockwork recovery (green text). because of this i dont have to reinstall packages?
also, is the backup option in clockwork recovery (green text) equivalent to nandroid backup?
Once you are in Clockwork Recovery (green text), there is no more need to reinstall packages.
The "Backup Current ROM" in ROM Manager makes a nandroid backup.
very nice. two thanks for you. thank you.
Not sure how to get out of it. Any ideas? When i reboot with the power button, it gets to the N then jumps to Clockwork.

Could you actually reboot into clockwork with the power and n button, then reboot the device from there? It may or may not yield the same result. Was this your first backup? Is clockwork on an sd card?
I'm already in Clockwork and can move around its just that if i choose reboot it goes back into recovery. If i reboot with the power button, it goes back into recovery. All i did was backup the ROM from ROM manager. I'm on 1.1.0 rooted with Autonooter 3.0

Hmmm. Not sure what may have gone wrong. It is pretty straight forward. You may restore your backup and see what happens.
It was posted by k4str0:
There is about 10 threads in the general forum to resolve this. Just FYI. The fix is to use Monster CWR bootable SD card to flash CW-removal.zip and remove CWR off the internal memory. Stick to using the bootable CWR instead.
This worked for me, also you will not loose anything, only need to install later CW back.

That's where you can d/l the ZIP file. I had to use that too after flashing an o/c'ed kernel. It works like a charm.
Thanks. It worked. I used the zip file that removes Clockwork and keeps root. I'm wondering if Clockwork has problems with stock 1.1.0 ? I didn't have any problems until i upgraded.
I have never been able to make a nandroid backup. If I boot from a recovery sd card, it fails and when I try to reboot to recovery from froyo, that doesn't work either.
