How to get rid of beep sound in 2.3.6 ? :( - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have just upgraded to Gingerbread,
I am getting a annoying sound when the last call cost is displayed..
how can i get rid of this ?
Airtel in india displays the last call cost for each and every SMS sent.. Indians might be knowing about this better..
so, please anybody help me out of this

nobody ?

What you're seeking is to disable "USSD tone". I wonder why do you get this tone in the first place! 7 months with android and I never got USSD buzz in plenty of ROMs I have used.

By the way, I believe all you have to do is know which audio file its linking to while running that USSD code result.
What I suggest is, try looking first into /system/media/audio/ui directory by "Root Explorer" app. Listen all by playing audio files one by one. If there is the audio file what you're peeved of, mount system for R/W and delete it!
We could directly know the location of that media file by observing logcat. Just asking, have your set up ADB?

sorry,
But very noob here.. setting up ADB means ?
by the terms you are telling, i suppose there is something to do with the terminal emulator.. ? ? coz i have used some mount commands and some things to remove certain stock apps. could u give me any link of how to set up adb and steps of how to remove the stock sound and see the log too ? or tell by urself if possible ?
Thanks in advance

Yh after evry call and sms i get the beep soundto tell how much cost...i think it only occurs on 2.3.6

Never mind. Forget ADB for now, did you try to go through the location I told you? /system/media/audio/ui
1) Go to market (Play Store), search for ES file explorer, install it.
2) Open it, go to favorite, select "/" (means, root in your FILE system).
3) Go to /system/media/audio/ui, listen each file, try to locate while audio file is played at the time of that USSD code.

-FIXED-[China-only] Market : "Download was unsuccessful..."

[Edit]
Turned out that the lovely chinese governement somehow got to Android
Anyhow, thanks to Marcus, we have the solution, tested & confirmed working by myself.
Please follow the instructions at that link :
hiapk.com/bbs/thread-278678-1-1.html
Then you'll be happy. If you need more detailed informations, let me know.
I haven't been trying to understand the changes I made. If you somehow feel that it's a problem for you, then leave the phone as is. Also, I guess this will be usable only for rooted phones.
Have fun! And once again, thanks to Marcus.

[original post, FYI]
Hey all,
Starting yesterday, I am having this error with the market.
Any app I try to get will give me that error : download was unsuccessful, please try again blah~
Weird thing is that it really happened out of the blue, because it was working fine until yest noon. I am on CM 5.0.7.1-N1, with the radio that came with Froyo. Issue exists with Wi-Fi and 3G.
I tried : reboot (multiple times), newer CM, Nandroid restore to a point when it was working, deleted/recreated APN.
I m too lazzy to try and downgrade the radio, and haven't tried to install Froyo.
Strange thing is : gmail app won't connect, but the email app will work (well, I knew that it isn't an internet access related issue, but still...). If I try and install a ROM from scratch, the initial Google login will fail again and again.
Actually, I have one suspicion. I am in Beijing, on China Unicom. I know that China hasn t been kind on Google lately. Any other user in China experiencing this same issue? Or does this just happen sometimes?
Thanks!
I am in GuangDong, and for the past 2 days similar things just happened to me.
I didn't use the GMail app but now you mentioned it, I tried it and it didn't work. It is stuck with "No connection (Retry)" screen
Using Email and setup a GMail account works fine with me as well.
Hopefully, this is not one of the other 'stunt' of the Great China Firewall.
Argh...
I do believe that we may be f***ed, at least temporarily...
Let s see where it goes, but if you do experience the same troubles, then it might a nation-wide thingy.
Are you on China Unicom, too?
Only time will tell.... But let's hope we won't have to give up on Android in China.
Any other Android friends in China having troubles? I ll update the title of the tread, see if we can catch more people's eyes.
Re: [In China only ?] Market : suddenly, "Download was unsuccessful..."
I'm in Shanghai and can only access market apps and gmail syncing with my vpn.

Guys there is a fix here: hiapk.com/bbs/thread-278678-1-1.html
Good Luck
Marcus
Hey, good catch!
Will give it a shot, then report back here how it went.
Thanks
[Edit] It works! Follow Marcus link, and you ll get unstuck.
If anybody needs detailed directions, feel free to let me know.
Will edit the title and original post.

***EDIT
Gmail and the Market work on my US simcard roaming on China Unicom.
I'm in Guangdong; i've also had the same issues with Gmail and the Market at the same time. Both don't work on the network (Unicom) or WiFI connections; I'll have to give that fix a try later, thanks.
Hello!
Can somebody translate the procedure into English?
Thanks!
The procedure is to edit your host file with the information shown.
I m happy to share this, so here is the easy way to do:
1-get the file rootexplorer, which is attached here, if you don't have it.
2- install it, of course If you do not have a file explorer to get to it, then push the file.
3- open it, then find the folder /etc, open it
4- remember to touch the button "Mount R/W" to change the status of the text r/o into r/w right next to the button.
5- find the file called "hosts", and long press it. scroll all the way down to "Open in Text Editor"
6- there is already a line of stuff in there, so just skip a line and type :
209.85.135.100 clients2.google.com1
209.85.135.101 android.l.google.com
209.85.135.100 android.clients.google.com
underneath. I guess the spacing does not really matter, but they have to be each on a different line, as shown here. Also, it is a pain in the ass to type, so make sure there is no typo at first try
7- in options, save&exit (it creates a backup by itself)
8- reboot (not sure if that s necessary)
9- it works
there you go.

Hi, I am guessing that no, it won't, since you need to access root files. I m not sure but seems to make sense to me.
Sorry! Also, this is what is preventing me to go straight away to Samsung i9000, since it isn't rooted yet...
I didn't root my Legend yet and if i do so and the fix doesn't work, I will be stuck with the phone with no app on it.
At least now I have all my apps and only Gmail and the Market don't work.
Any idea from where this issue come from and if it will resolve itself?
It's the end of the chinese holiday... so maybe some hope...
sorry i m naive in the field of this mobile tech world .
i reached to the hosts file through your solution but i can't change read only files to write
this rooting stuff looks too complicated for htc desire .
is there any other way , without roooting my desire
Sorry, mate. I don't own a desire, so I really cannot help with this issue.
True enough, it's only those two apps which will not work, but still a little annoying to have to go and look online for the apps and to download them manually.
Ask on the Desire forum about this
4- remember to touch the button "Mount R/W" to change the status of the text r/o into r/w right next to the button.
In my htc desire i can't get this "mount r/w" is its the functionality of root explorer . because i can't see any option to change from r/o to r/w
Hey, what can i do if my phone isn't rooted?
Same problem as everyone has, apps not installing and no gmail.
I dont get it, why it happened. Stupid Great firewall.
I have froyo 2.2. how can i root it just to change hosts files? dont want any custom roms tho. tnx

[Q] "Installation error - insufficient storage available" when installing skype

[Q] "Installation error - insufficient storage available" when installing skype
Hello Everybody,
this is my first post on this forum, i decided to start this thread cause i've been struggling with this problem for something like one month now, i really want to fix it, and this looks like the best place where to ask for help.
I'm having problems installing the Skype application on a Samsung Galaxy S, in Italy.
Initially i installed it from the market, the installation went fine, but i couldn't log in cause i was still running Android 2.1
After the upgrade to 2.2, Skype worked only the first time i tried to use it, then it started giving me a weird bug; basically each time i tried to make a call, it would say "already 2 ongoing calls".
I uninstalled it, and now each time i try to install it again i get the same error message "Installation error - insufficient storage available".
I have 5.22GB available on the internal SD card, and 573MB on the internal phone storage, and i have no external SD card.
I tried to contact the Skype support, sent them something like 10 different emails, but each time they came up with stupid answers and in the end they couldn't find a solution, so they said
"Please note that the message you are receiving is an operating system message and is not a Skype message.
We suggest that you contact Samsung to find out under which circumstances the operating system returns this message and what can be done to make an installation possible."
I tried to contact Samsung, but they didn't even reply.
I started a thread in the Android Market Help Forum and one guy suggested to use adb to delete the skype folder
So i rooted my device with z4root and also did the OneClickLagFix V2.2+
I managed to install the Android SDK and get the adb up and running, but when i try to delete the skype folder, this is what i get
# rm -R /data/com.skype.raider
rm -R /data/com.skype.raider
rm failed for /data/com.skype.raider, No such file or directory
#
basically there is no such folder..
at this point i really don't know what to do, and i hope that someone here is able and willing to help me.
I think i gave all the possibly needed information to help you fixing my problem, but if you need more please just ask.
Thanks a lot and by the way big up to this forum, so many useful informations in here!
Cheers
Pedro
update
i installed Titanium Backup
if i go to the Backup/Restore tab and scroll to the very botton, the last one is com.skype.raider, but it has a line on it and i'm not sure what that means (see attached image)
if i click it, all the options are grayed out, so i can't uninstall it..
if i click and hold, a different menu comes up, where most of the options are grayed out as well, i can only do Assign Labels, Explore and View in Market.
If i click Explore, it says:
com.skype.raider
files/
shared.lck 0B
defetto/
main.db-journal 8.0KB
any idea what's going on? thanks in advance
Never mind, i made it!
I bought an application from the market called Root Explorer, i couldnt find a free one doing the same, basically giving full access to my folder structure.
Anyway, i was able to find the com.skype.raider folder and delete it..
after that, next install went fine!
the correct path was /data/data/com.skype.raider
so if you have the same problem, you can use abd and delete the folder and you don't need to buy the above mentioned app..
p.s. how do i set this thread as answered?
Had a similar problem! I couldn't downlaod anything from the market. Unmounting the sdcard has fixed the issue. Thx http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

[Q] Move ringtones to internal memory

Hello, I would like to move my ringtones to the internal memory because I've noticed that since I started using Swap, It delays the ringtone from starting. This is what I observed, Randomly the ringtone starts after 2 or 3 vibrates, other times its not at all and uses the stock beeping ringtone (I guess since the SD is being used, it cant go in it and get the ringtone) So bottom line, My ringtones take a few seconds to ring after a few vibrates. I already know that I have to convert them to .ogg, but does anyone know another way to make the system pull up the ringtone faster?
I would like to know that myself. Im sick of having my default ringtone going when i selected a custom one for one of my contacts. whats the best settings for the ogg files too as this may be helpful to us both

Alright... So you wanna do this, here is what you will need:
*ADB Installed and working
*Root Manager of some sort
*Format Factory -This is freeware, so it's not warez.
1st, Download and install Format Factory. This is the program I use for everything. If you have one of your own preference, it can be substituded.
**Do a custom install, as this will try to install adbars otherwise. (You have been warned.)
2nd, Open Format Factory and click "All to OGG".
3rd, Select your ringtones and click "ok". On the next screen, click "Start"
4th, Open your Root Explorer program, I use Android Commander
5th, With your Root Explorer program, navigate to your newly created OGG files (normally found in Documents/FFOutput on your PC) in the Root Explorer.
6th, Move these files to /system/media/*** on your phone. And you are done.
Please note: ""***" represents the respective folders. i.e. "ringtones", "notifications", etc.
Hope this helped you. Click "thanks" if it did. - Any questions, ask.
EDIT: DO NOT change the OGG settings in Format Factory. They work fine at default. Once you get used to, and comfortable with doing this, then play with the settings to get your desired file size and quality.
I tried doing what you said, but although I successfully managed to push the files, they still don't appear in the ringtone/notifications menu

did you make sure the phone looked for new media, or restart ya phone? i had to do it with mine
I was going to say that I had checked the phone after restart and they still weren't showing up - but I double checked again and now they are. Thanks! I'm not sure how to check for new media, though - is there a procedure for this?
Been trying this using ES File Explorer but keeping getting a message that paste failed. Any ideas where i'm going wrong.
I have S-Off and root
you can try this, it a little easier if you have the tools but yoo have to reflash the rom so be sure to backup your apps, contacts blah blah blah...
1. unzip the 'rom.zip' file, open the folder and look for the system/media/audio folder
2. now you can add & remove ringtones, notifications, alarm sounds that you want or dont want...
3. zip the rom file back up
4. sign it with an auto sign program... (very simple to use)
5. flash rom and enjoy your customizations
6. restore your backed up contacts and apps...
(you can also remove some unwanted stock apps to save space, be sure not too remove system required apps though lol)
Cheers Idrifta, ended up getting it to work using Root Explorer.
o nice!!! haha good to know... better than my method lol
The following worked for me.. Check this
I followed a link and it worked for me on jfltetmo running on cm11-m9 and having twrp v2.8.4.0. I explained the steps in my answer here: How to install a ringtone into internal memory?. All the credit for the steps go to villo-2.

[Q] Willingly uninstalled a default app (how could i be soo dumb)

Please help me, i have a Galaxy S gt-i9000 with froyo (rooted) and i downloaded some custom dialer/ contacts and sms packs (it looked nice so i thought .. why not give it a try) but one of the apps said that its recommended to remove the default app so that it wont cause any conflicts. i wanted to uninstall the default dialer app but i ended up uninstalling the "Phone" app .. and now i cant use the contacts widget.. touching a contact wont pop up the menu with options (call, video call, send sms ..)
i wanted to check if i can try anything in Kies (restore or something) but my phone doesn't seem to be recognized anymore in Kies :|
Is there anything to be done?
any advice is deeply appreciated.
i have attached phone apk for you to install. you just need to unzip it and place it under /system /app and then reboot. make sure system is mounted RW
if that fails, reflash the ROM.
thank you for the prompt answer.
i downloaded the zip but i cant get to the root folder .. i mean .. i can only connect the phone in storage mode ...
should i try using a card?

You need either Root Explorer (paid) or Astro File Manager (free) from the market. Storage mode is fine, just copy the unzipped apk from your pc to the internal storage, then use one of the apps above to move it to /system /app.
Make sure you mount /system /app as rw or it wont paste.
ok so i copied it in /app ... asked me if i want to replace .. canceled and tried to run the phone apk that i already had ... it said App not installed.. so i copied and replaced the one from you .. and tried to run .. still no result :|
the phone apk is there ... but i think the dialer app is the one actually missing .. could you please add the dialer app as well?

you got a DialerTabActivity apk?
i copied all and overwrite them but still cant install the apps back. i would of wanted to keep my apps and stuff ... is there any other way to reinstall the default apps that i stupidly uninstalled? (Contacts, Dialer, Phone) dont know if it helps .. but i used the "Uninstaller for Root" app

Ok, I could be wrong here, but I'm fairly sure I read somewhere on here that you need to MOVE system apps, not COPY them, so go to system/app/ again and delete the ones you copied, then Move them from root of your sd to system/apps again. Then maybe try a reboot. I'm not sure this will solve it, but it's probably worth a try...
well ... no wireless here ... no wap on my sim ... cant get astro at the moment seems that everything i thought i was doing was bogus .. the file manager was saying that it was pasting/ copying/ deleting but it wasn't ... Sorry, I assumed you were using Astro, or Root Explorer.
Astro is free on the market so it should be ok for me to post it here (if not, someone tell me ok?).

Hey, happy to help, if I'm actually helping lol. That's what the sites for
Ok I've attached Astro, but I'd recommend buying Root Explorer, it's what I use. Also I've included a pic of the permissions needed by each of the files I put in the rar. I don't know about Astro, but in Root Explorer you just long press the app to get to permissions menu. You may not even need them, I'm not sure. Will check back tommorrow to see if you're making any progress.
ok thanks once again .. and good night
well astro cant edit permissions .. or at least not the free version .. or maybe they changed it in newer versions (in case there are any)

Damn, that's a pity, that was the latest version from the market, think you should buy Root Explorer if you can.
Permissions aside, did you successfully move the files with Astro?
If you did, dont try to install them, try a reboot first, I think that's what I did when I put the email.apk from SGSII into my SGS.
Sorry I didn't solve your problem tonight, will try again tommorrow if you want
i couldnt even move them cause the app dir is read only ... same for the files ... so unless i can get an app that can edit permissions i cant try moving/rebooting .

[Q] how do you install bootsound

Is it possible to get bootsounds working on my
Cm7 hero. I have tried a few zips I have found.
I get errors every time
Any help would be appreciated
Too busy to post it. It works. I have the files. Pm me and ill help later.
I would actually like to know how to do that as well.
OK here it is. I don't know if this works on sense, but it does work on AOSP based ROMs. Take the mp3 below and put it in /system/media, it's the THX movie bootup sound (I think). You can change it to whatever you want later. Take the sh file and put it on the root of your sd. Once both of those things are done, do this EXACTLY:
-open terminal emulator
-type "su" press enter
-type "cd /sdcard" press enter
-type "sh bootsnd.sh" press enter ONLY ONE TIME !!!
-type "reboot"
EDIT: no quotes obviously...
If you follow this, it will work. If you get smart and change it, or press enter twice where it says once, it will hose your /system. Oh, you should probably NANDROID FIRST.
Peace.

OMG! Yes! I love messing with terminal emulator. It makes me feel smarter than I actually am, lol. Thanks for the quick response.
Quick question - You said we should be able to change it afterwards so does that mean after we follow the steps you so graciously provided we should then be able to find an .mp3 somewhere in /system that can simply be replaced with another .mp3? for example maybe in /system/media/audio......?
You can use any mp3 you want.

Peace.

i followed these steps exactly and it worked perfectly scared the crap out of my wife with it she didnt know i added sound to the bootup she came running bringing it to me saying its making noises i think something is wrong.
question about changing the sound file does it matter the size or whether its an mp3 or a wma file. just overwrite the one i placed during setup? do i have to rerun the TE commands if i change the sound file? thanks for any answers to this
edit:crap shouldve just edidted my post above with this question sorry
Lol at your wife. You have to use mp3 only, memory size doesn't matter, but I think length does I think you want one that isn't too long, though I never tried a long one. < TWSS lmao. You dont need to redo the commands, unless you flash a new rom. Then you have to redo the whole thing.

Any mp3 file will work as long as its renamed to android_audio.mp3 and placed in /system/media. I recommended an mp3 file no longer than 20-30 seconds at the most. I'm not sure if wma files will work as that's a windows file.
You do not need to run the commands in TE again unless you nandroid back or possibly wipe everything.
Note: This is just from my own personal experience. I'm not a developer or anything and I take no responsiblilty if you screw up your phone. I hope this helps and don't forget to nandroid first
EDIT: lol sorry Duce, you posted sometime in the middle of me typing on my phone
