Hi, I downloaded the Cosmic Flow live wallpaper and put the apk file onto my SD card. But when i open the file in astro, there is no install option. I tried downloading wallpaper from several different sites but none of them work. Any ideas? This method has worked for me previously.
Maybe your "PackageInstaller.apk" is missing/corrupted. It's the app which installs non-market apps.
It's explained here -->
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
make sure you have enable non-market apps>click the apk which you want to download>click "open app manager">click "install"
if you cannot install an app like this then i dont know watch goin on....

Yes ,so finally you found the root cause of your problem - missing file
I strongly suggest you flash a new ROM.
Else , download your ROM once again.
Copy the Package installer app from the downloaded ROM file and place it into /system/app
guys why when i put an app in system/app it doesn't install it automatically?
even after the reboot, i have to install it manually...

Some apps are available at slideme.org if you can't access the Market from your device. Better to just use MarketEnabler, as the Market is currently the main repository for Android apps.

If you just put the .apk file onto your sdcard, then you will need to install some kind of file manager to open the .apk file. If you download the .apk from a website then you can open it from the browser's download list. You can also install .apk files by connecting the phone to a computer and using adb.

ok here is what I would do
http://androidcommander.com
download this file, connect your phone with adb debugging enabled. This program will find your device, from there you can open an extracted rom browse the rom until you find the HTC TV app and install it as a system app,
I did this for my evo 3d when devs took out the 3d widgets I used.

When you say "install as a system app" do you mean place it on the app folder in system/app then reboot?

no if you double click the apk file for HTCTV another window will open, when you click install a third window will open and the last option is install as a system app, select that one and click install
this will chmod the app file as 777 allowing it be executed. I think your system is not set as rw and only as ro.

Neat app. Followed the instructions went exactly as you described, install was "successful" but nothing shows up in my app drawer. Rebooted to see if that would fix, still no dice. Im beginning to think downloading the full rom will be the best idea. If i do, would i need to wipe? I know i should wipe if going to a different rom but in this its the same rom.

Hi,
My ROM came without the email apk/s and I was wondering if anyone had them from stock .254
I have the gmail apk, I need the stock email one for other email services like hotmail
Cheers
EDIT: please read through the rest of the thread, the issue has progressed but not been solved.

When I go to install the apk like a normal apk, by opening the apk in my file explorer and installing, it goes through the install screens, but then finishes by saying "Application not installed"
Unknown sources is checked and I have side loaded apks like this before successfully, what's the problem?
OOhhh, maybe it's because that's an odexed file. My rom is deodexed.

System apps are not installed like normal apps. You need to root your device, put it in system/app and permissions rw-r-r- reboot to see it
(I'm already rooted)
Well here's something weird. I copied the files, went to system/app and it turns out the files are ALREADY there!
I check out the permissions and they're both correct. So I rebooted and it still won't show up. I opened Titanium Backup and looked through the apps list again there, there's no sign of it being on the system.
The files are there but apparently they're not!
Strange, move those file to data/app rw-r-r- and reboot and see what happens

Hi, ive tried that but it keeps showing "read-only" file....
Maybe I haven't grasped the intricacies of the question properly, but why do you think you need to uninstall the Google keyboard? I have several Google keyboards (standard, Pinyin, etc.) plus what is probably the best, Swiftkey, which is free (in-app purchases of different themes) and can easily be set as your default.
