Is there somewhere with a Captivate ROM comparison? I've been away for a month and a half, and holy crap have things changed! I am soooo confused. Running Cog right now.

Que the flaming. (should be in the Q&A section)
They change so often, that I think it would be hard for someone to maintain the tread on it. You pretty much need to do the research yourself on each ROM and decide which is best for you in performance, look, and battery life. (Thats what I do anyways) I like to try them all in order to get a feeling for them.
It has indeed been a busy month. Not sure where to direct you for an across the board comparison, but as for myself i've read a lot of threads and am presently completely content running perception 10.1 with dg's firebird 2 kernel and jk4 modem on my i896. Everything works, including hspa in both directions, gps gets a fast reliable lock, and battery is great. Planning to stick with this til there's a good stable gingerbread rom.

Once in a while, it's worth the roasting in order to get something like this going. In an ideal world, it is a great idea. Would be a nice place to do "One stop shopping". Maybe some ambitious individual will take it on.
It all depends on what you want
I just started flashing, so I didn't know a lot about the roms either, the advice they give to just jump in an start flashing is the best, it's scary at first but I started thursday and I'm already on my third flash Just read the documentation and watch install videos, follow all the steps, don't be lazy and you'll be fine.
I really like the new roms based on the rogers firmware just coming out, everything seems to work perfectly, I picked a great time to start flashing
Cognition 3.01 is really good and a clean android experience, but no HSUPA or firebird kernel
I just flash firefly 1.0 and this rom is sweet, HSUPA, great gps so far, though it does have some themed aspects I don't like, but I'm more concerned about functionality than themes.
Good luck finding what works for you.
i was where u are at not too long ago, and i did tons of reading
This guy might help you a little tho, he just started a youtube channel comparing Captivate roms ---> http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/ROM_s_in_a_FLASH_REVIEWS.html
cool thanks

I asked this a month ago and got flamed then my post got deleted. It was ridiculous.

How is this development? Thread moved.
Also, threads about "which ROM is best" and "ROM features" tend to cause more trouble than they're worth, as we get the fanboi effect, and it turns into a flamewar. As such, they get closed to prevent trouble.
Look at the wiki, as that would be a good place to make a feature comparison. But remember that everyone's experience with a ROM is different. That's why you need to try it for yourself, and not just go by what someone else says
Oh, and remember to post in the right section next time, please.
I am currently running Dorian's XXJPY 2.2.1 on my Captivate.
I was looking at some ROMs tonight and saw a bunch that sounded really great. Is there anything better, faster, more stable?
I don't want to overclock or do anything fancy, I just want battery life, speed and stability.
Thanks for helping a noobie at this stuff! I never knew the community was THIS big!
I just flashed Cognition 3.02. Look in the developer portion and read his mission. It looks exactly like what you are looking for.
It's generally regarded as one of the best. I like it a lot, and upgrading is so fast with clockwork recovery.
Please move to q&a.

If it is just speed and stability you are looking for then you should take a look at Cognition. The past week lots of nice ROMS were released so if you find Cognition lacking to your taste you can easily switch to something else like Perception or Serendipity. Phoenix is highly themed but still a nice ROM if that's what you are into.
Whatever ROM you choose, make sure you do research, it's impossible for someone to completely fill you in about the pros and cons of each ROM since they are changing in a weekly basis. And take your time following directions so you don't end up with an expensive paper weight.
Cheers and good luck.
Hard question to answer. My advice is just pick one to start with...you'll end up flashing non-stop once you start...trust me. I'm using Paragon right now and it's excellent.
Try a few and have fun!

Yeah it is funny cus this thread is just completely opposite
I recommend one with a thread with some hyperbole in the subject line (I realize this is a tall order, but it can be found with some forum searches for superlatives). I would also recommend one in which the developer recommends disabling voodoo lagfix when installing a voodoo lagfix kernel since voodoo lagfix is apparently incompatible with voodoo lagfix.

I second that (although I am a little biased)
Everyone seems to think it makes their phone faster
Woah,
Thanks guys!
Sorry I didn't include this in the first post but I'm actually using Dorian's UGJK3 FroYo - Gingerbread Edition. I really like the theme and the visual effects and I wouldn't want to give those up.
So my question restated is: What ROM would be best for speed, stability and battery life while having a nice visual style/theme?
I really like how the Dorian ROM runs and it is definitely faster than stock. I also love the theming and icons, ect.
Thanks. You guys are amazing!
Use serpendity 3.0 rom its the best one very minimalistic fast and has good battery life

The best way to find out is to test them all your self. No one can tell you what rom is best for you.
What's the recommendation for a solid, basic rom I can install on my friend's Captivate? He is most definitely not a power user. He just wants his phone to operate faster and be able to enable wifi tethering. He is currently running on android 2.1, so I figure going up to 2.2 at least will help and I have already rooted it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Probably the most stock-like ROM you could flash would be Cognition. Great ROM, has all the features you could want.
Alternately, you could run Serendipity if you want the Gingerbread look.. Or a CM7 build if you want actual Gingerbread (though buggier than the other ROMs)
Firstly, right here on the front page is a Q&A section of this forum. That's where a question like this should go.
Regarding the answer -- IMHO its so subjective that it'd be hard to recommend anything other than a stable rom that has mass appeal, usually noted by the amount of replies to a roms thread. In short, cognition would be a good starting point. I used that for a while and had very few problems. I upgraded to cyanogen a few days ago and there are certainly some bits (namely network related) but I consider myself a power user so the added features more than makes it worth it.
Well, first off, I would move this to the Q&A thread.
But I would recommend Precision or Serendipity to flash. Use the theme when flashing Precision if you want something all Black/White. If you'd rather have that stock feel, I'd go with Cognition. It's really all just trying out different ROMs and seeing what you like. All three of those are fast and will enable tethering, but yesterday, AT&T announced they will start charging rooted users tethering fees if they catch you doing it. Theoretically, they won't be able to detect the tethering if you stay under 2GB of data, though.
Hope that helped!
It depends on personal preference, wrong section to post in. Just saying and not trying to be rude

Although the Romitchen.org is closed for some time, their captivate section has the most compatible stuff. I have used three different roms from there and all give me full functionality - GPS (for me this works real great with Navigon), Bluetooth, Wifi, Email, Text etc. without any hassle whatsoever.
I currently have a ROm that i built from there that works great....Can post it up if you want it?
Cheers !
Its 2.2.1
Thanks for the replies and my apologies for posting in the wrong forum. Looks like cognition will be the best one to start him out on. Thanks again

I'd recommend either Phoenix or FireFly. Both are rock solid, for the beginners FireFly might be better. They are both very good ROMS, and have great suport

I totally agree with Phoenix or FireFly. Totally stable, fast, and the UI's are great. I also think it's absolutely retarded to repeat the issue with this being in the wrong thread. I swear... some of you have a real issue with power tripping. I'm pretty sure after he read the first post about it he understood pretty well. this is XDA!!! Good job on just throwing out an answer Kangi26! That's what we're all here for. HELP!!!
Designgears makes good roms for those starting off, and good roms, just in general. Back in August when I got my cappy my first rom was I believe his first rom release, [srv] 1.0 or something. It was kinda my gateway drug. But his roms are good for beginners because the process for flashing is very simple, and most of all they're pretty stable. So for people unwilling to do deal with bugs, or are prone to complaining about things they don't want to really understand as yet, designgears offers a variety of solutions.
PS....
just as everyone else has mentioned, make sure to post in the correct section to avoid cluttering the forums.

Does Firefly unlock/enable tethering or will I still need an app like Wireless Tether? (I did read the first few pages of the official firefly thread but did not see the answer there...)

I'm almost 100%, it does. I'm running Phoenix (kind of the big brother to Fire Fly, and it is supported)

Wahoo a best rom thread, Have not seen one of these in awhile.
Ok Well there is no "Best Rom" Just a "Best for you rom". I have my favs like everyone else but your best bet is to try them out as you see one that catches your eye. No one can tell you what rom you would deem best it.
Hi Everyone. I just got my second Captivate today and am finally wanting to utilize it and Android to there full potentials. I had nothing customized on my first one so I am new to the developmental side of things. I am not uncomfortable with it though, so anything goes for me. What are the best recommendations? If you need anymore info let me know and I will do my best to provide it. Many thanks to everyone in advance!
Currently running stock everything.

Just a quick rundown of what I personally did with my captivate. I got the AIO Captivate toolbox, Cognition 4.5.3 and the eXistZ kernal. Threw that all together and got it up and running very easily, and very smoothly. This phone is a beast now... I LOVE it! This thing runs like butter.
I'd go with gingerbread, but I'll stay away till an official release from Samsung and AT&T. Personal choice of mine...
Try out different roms and find one that fits you best. Be careful read the instructions and make sure you understand, before you try anything. And don't let other force roms on you
Good luck
Thanks for the suggestions Jason. I will keep them in mind and see if I like any of it.
And Thanks for the advice Speedy. I will be sure to read and read and read some more before I do anything to my phone.
I love the AIO tool box. I found it convenient and easy. Maybe you should start here.
FOR NEW CAPTIVATE USERS - READ HERE FIRST - FAQs | HELPFUL LINKS
It's a great thread to get you some good starting info along with a lot of great links to more detailed threads on specific topics. Give it a read. Between that thread and the links from that thread you will probably be able to answer most if not all of your questions. It's got great info, even for those of us that have been doing some of this for a while. Then after you've read all that flash some of those great ROMs out there and find one you really like.
Happy Flashing

Like when people say this rom or that rom is the best. Its all personal choice. I probably should have worded it differently
I never understand why it is not allowed to discuss the "best" rom. Obviously "best" is somewhat of a subjective opinion. But aren't some roms actually more stable than others? Is the rule about discussing the best rom in place so developers feelings don't get hurt? So no one can say rom x is a buggy piece of crap? Even if the rom was crap?
And people say it depends on your phone. That makes zero sense. All the phones are identical i897s.
A for sale sign?
A good thing on the captivate is odin one click back to stock just in case you mess up

Cover your basses. Start with big roms such as CM7 and MIUI. They are fast and stable and can often be tweaked to function exactly as you wish. Start to narrow your way down to more homebrew roms if you remain unsatisfied.
I just put serendipity 6 on my buddys captivate. I don't know anything about the development for this phone so I kinda had to wing it to pick which rom to put on. He was on eclair . He loves it the new.but my question is, any reason to put serendipity 7 on it instead or any other ROM for that matter? I want to give him the best stability and battery with customization. Any help is.appreciated
I do have to say this was a fun phone to mess around with for the first time

Sorry, there is no quick answer. ROM selection is a personal preference thing.
However there is a thread on xda comparing roms battery performance. If I remember correctly serendipity was among the top. Fasty was up there too.
I'll look for the link when I get home and edit my post.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to leave him with something that it's stable and if serendipity I'd up there.my job is done.thanks man

I found the thread I had mentioned, but it's old. It has been almost a year since there were any constructive posts. It was full of squabbling, so I won't bring it back to life by posting a link to it. Too bad though, cause the guy who started it had good intentions.
Probably best to let this thread die also. Battery / performance comparison threads seem to get ugly after a while.

this phone is almost three + years old. so many ppl have moved to newer versions. those who still has this phone are moved on to ICS (Ice cream Sand-witch (4.0.4) based ROMs. ICS is fast, stable and good on battery as well.
that's why there is no action on GB based ROMS.
I am on Slim ICS and highly recommend it.
until they get the encryption unsuccessful bug worked out that is a pretty good reason to recommend staying with the gingerbread roms
i suggest you go with gingerbread because it was tested that it has a better battery performance plus the graphics drivers upgraded.
Legend 4 is the most active GB ROM with current and helpful developers still active. I run it with no problems.
