Skype or Google Voice
Skype is the best option if you will get a 3G/ wifi connection.
If you have google voice preinstalled in your phone, that is good too.

Here is a question (let me know if this is a re-post):
There is a way to make free calls in the US using Sipdroid full, Gizmo5 and GV (if you have a google voice account) per this guide:
http://iiordanov.blogspot.com/2009/07/sipdroid-gv-guava.html
This works great when I use GV to call any U.S. number. I decided to try to add Skype Lite to the mix. I set up GV to control any outgoing call in hope that the call that Skype out calls will be intercepted by GV and then routed through Gizmo5 to Sipdroid. I used Skype lite to call my home number (I have Skypeout unlimited world) and even though I got the call back through Sipdroid and heard the ringing tune in my G1, My home phone never rang.
What did I do wrong?
Any change this can work?
Why would you want to use skype? Its just a proprietary mess. You can simply use sipdroid straight up with any generic sip account.

I am using Skype for several years at home. I have unlimited world account for international calls, I have phone adapters at home that work with Skype and an impatient wife that would kill me if I introduce another solutions. All my friends using Skype to communicate. I don't want to have duplicate services or change my life.

Thats too bad. Skype, being proprietary, does not and will not ever dominate the voip market -- you're going to have to ditch it eventually. It's easier to do it now rather than wait until you have no choice.
Is there a google voice app that allows you to make calls through your data connection?
Search GV in the Market.
the official google voice app still makes calls using your provider's minute count, it just lets you show your GV caller ID to the person on the other end.
you can use skype via the fring app. rev
Fring sucks. I use PortSIP. It's pretty lightweight (unlike Fring).
You need an SIP provider too. Google Voice is not an SIP provider. Gizmo can be directly incorporated with Google Voice but it's closed to new users right now. The best free incoming SIP provider I found was SIPGate. sipgate.com/one. They charge for outgoing calls, but it's free for incoming calls. You can use the Google Voice Call Back feature to get free VOIP through SIPGate just like with Gizmo.
Just a heads up... new version is out on the market... fully supports inbound and outbound calling VIA Google Voice... pretty slick, basically (TMo) wifi calling without using minutes...
Add the [APP] flag to the title, yo. Good stuff otherwise.

Correct, perfect VOIP wifi calling, its a free app, dl it from the market and create a new account, log in with your google voice credentials... simple.
Can someone please tell me how to use sipdroid? I downloaded it and made a pbxes.org account (with google voice) but when I call on wifi it says call could not be connected and fails. Also can you do 3g voip calling with att because it wont even register with pbxes.org on 3G for some reason for me.

Download SIPdroid
Create new account using Google Voice
Make sure you are connected to a good wifi connection
Make sure the little light in the notification bar is green.
Make phone call
Ok I got it to work, the problem was actually that the phone used a different gvoice account.
What about my question on 3G?

Wow... awesome. Thanks so much!
Just a heads-up; I had to recreate the pbxes account that I already had in order to add google voice.
Hi guys,
A friend of mine seems to have a problem with Google Voice - he's American but living in Spain, and he used to use Google Voice to call home.
Well, since he updated to Gingerbread the Google Voice app doesn't show app on his app drawer. He's tried setting the phone's language to American English, apparently to no avail. If he opens the Market and then navigates to the GV app, everything's greyed out and he can't open it from there; there's also no "uninstall" button.
Is there anything he can do to open the app?
Thanks in advance for your help.
He might want to try again with an american SIM card.
Android 2.3.3 Google Voice/Sipdroid Installation for OUTSIDE USA
When I did the manual update of Gingerbread 2.3.3 in Spain, I lost the Google Voice app functionality, as it was not included in the App drawer and all buttons were greyed out, including the Open button on the Android Market. I could not uninstall google voice nor do anything with it.
So here's how I got Sipdroid working on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 outside the USA!!!!
Sipdroid only requires that Google Voice be installed on the phone to
setup the PBXes account. After Sipdroid is setup, Google Voice is not
needed, and can be uninstalled.
Below are the instructions for those of us outside the USA using Gingerbread 2.3.3 that want to use Sipdroid/Pbxes to make free wifi/3G calling to/from Google Voice. (You will need to already have a google voice number)
1. Download Sipdroid and install from the Android Market.
2. Download the APK file to your phone and install it. This will setup Google Voice and is just needed for the Sipdroid/PBXes setup.
3. Open Google Voice and just Sign In with your Gmail account. You don't need to continue further with the installation, just hit the Home button and then...
4. Open Sipdroid---A small button at the bottom of the application will ask you to setup a PBXes account and you'll just enter your info. Voila, now you can make/receive free USA/Canada phone calls.
Now, google voice will continue to be an app you can use on your phone, however when you reboot the phone, the app will disappear. The good thing is that Sipdroid doesn't now need the Google Voice app to function. (If you do want to use Google Voice in any other way, you can just reinstall it, and it will work until you reboot your phone)
Hope this helps!
Now I can sleep well after solving this..........

Google Employee Looking into Google Voice not working outside USA
Just read over on a Google Support forum:
A google employee is looking into this Google Voice issue on 2.3.3
Hopefully they'll get out a fix for those that need to use GV app shortly.
David
Until Google gets a fix out the door, one alternative would be to use the Mobile Web version of Google Voice. The only downside is that Android users only get the basic text-based version of Google Voice for Mobile Web. Only webOS users get the really nice graphical mobile web-based version. So unfair!
Google Voice is not available outside us until now
I don't live in USA and I activated Google voice. Using Skype online number. Helps if u want to call someone who is in the states or even USPS cell phone package tracking etc. Now, the VoIP international rates are also attractive to call home.

I'm deployed to Afghanistan with no service. I do however have good access to wifi. Is there anyway to use my capitvate to make/receive calls on wifi only.
I'm guessing that google voice (or some other such service) is probably involved. Thanks in advance.
Yes! With a SIP Provider such as Gizmo5 (new signups currently closed), Google Voice, Google Voice Callback, and Sipdroid or CSipSimple it's possible to use only wifi to make calls. I'll post more information soon.
Step 1 - Register for Google Voice
Step 2 - Register for SIP Account (try sipgate) and make sure it has unlimited free incoming calls
Step 3 - Set up your SIP # with Google Voice
Step 4 - Set up the Call Back app with your google voice info
Step 5 - Set up your SIP application with information from your SIP Provider
Step 6 - Toggle Call Back, Dial Out, Accept the incoming call and wait for the other person to answer!
I think this covers it. I haven't used this set up in a while and I might be missing some information. Let me know if you have any questions.
You could also use netTalk or skype both available in the market.
And thanks for your service to this great country of ours!

Yes! Thanks so much for serving it means a lot. Stay safe.
Att does not support calls and texts through wifi like t mobile. So you will have to use a 3rd party app like google voice as others have said

what about skype?
You can do this..
Download an app called line 2. Its free calls and texts through 3g or wifi and its 10 bucks a month. Not bad for unlimited.
