So I unlocked the bootloader using:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105
Then I flashed Cyanogenmod. Thing is, it installs Superuser. But since I'm guessing that the phone is still not rooted, since I just unlocked the bootloader, does Superuser have any function atm?
Thanks in advance.
Cyanogenmod 7 is rooted already, as with most custom roms
so keep superuser

if the bootloader is unlocked and s-on you can flash roms and use all the functions of a rooted device but in after the flashing of the rom you have to manually push the rom's boot.img file found inside the rom using adb in fast boot
using command
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Do you have to change the N1 RECOVERY to enable ROOT?
No.
You can root with superoneclick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682) or unlock your bootloader and root it by hand (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13446089)

Excellent! Just what I wanted to hear!

Actually, it's the opposite: You have to root to change recovery, unless you unlocked bootloader.
Unless something has changed in the past few days, you DO need to change recovery to root. The only way to root stock GRJ22 is to flash SU.zip, and you can only do that with non-stock recovery.

Yes, correct. But how are you going to flash a custom recovery without root?
As was said before, if you are on GRJ22, you only have two options to root:
1) unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and flash ChainsDD's Superuser update;
2) downgrade to Froyo by flashing one of the leaked Froyo shipped ROM (FRG33 or FRG83) via the bootloader, root that and update to Gingerbread the proper way...
I agree, you need root before you can flash a custom recovery.
Your option #2 is what I used. I downgraded to Froyo, then upgraded to 2.3.3, then rooted with Gingerbreak, installed custom recovery using clockworkmod app, and THEN upgraded to 2.3.4 with stock recovery folder removed which allows you to install SU.zip.
It's a few extra steps over unlocking the bootloader, but it doesn't take long and may be worth doing to not have to unlock the bootloader.

Yup. Sounds good.
Or, you can just unlock your bootloader and never have to worry about losing root ever again... and besides, I haven't heard of any individual saying that HTC refused warranty service because of an unlocked bootloader...
My bootloader has been unlocked for months!
im useing ota 2.3.4 and ive tried everything to root the nexus one universal,z4,gingerbreak i have the bootloader unlocked but it will not root however gingerbreak did install su i thought my G2X was a trip this thing is giveing me more grey hair somew one have a solution
I had this problem and just managed to figure it out today (through the power of google). Superboot, oneclick and gingerbreak all don't work for 2.3.4 as of right now, so you have to use the PASSIMG method to flash an older version and root from there.
I found a good guide, but given that I've been a lurker for the past couple years as opposed to a regular poster, I can't link it. In lieu of a link, I suggest a search query such as "root 2.3.4 nd1razor"
Your bootloader is unlocked. No need for all that crap. Put the su zip on your sd card. Flash custom recovery via fastboot. Boot directly into the new recovery. And flash the su.zip from the recovery. You're rooted. The end.
you just need to flash custom recovery via fast boot or rom manager.then you can flash custom roms (which mostly have root along with tweaks) via recovery

I also unlocked the bootloader!
I put this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084726
But I still do not have root permissions ... Why?
You have them, but probably don't know how to use them. How do you check for them?
How did you put the ROM? Did you flash custom recovery?
Yes, i flash recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img
Now my rom is: MIUI-1.9.16
The strange thing is that I managed to install the rom and recovery without having root permissions
Not strange. You don't need root. You have unlocked bootloader......

Thanks, you're very kind!
How do for get root permissions ?
The ROM includes them. When you're inside the ROM, you have root.
You are right !!!!! I just had to change the parameters with superuser
thanks
P.S.: Sorry for my ignorance

You have to wait until opus releases ics.

No, the custom, rooted ROMs that are being developed off of the Chinese RUU/OTA can only be flashed from on phone that has a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod or 4EXT, which in your case would require an unlocked bootloader or downgrading and gaining S-OFF using Revolutionary.

I don't see why you should screw it up. Everyone here has succesfully unlocked his bootloader. For installation of ICS, just wait a few days, until we know exactly the best way to install ICS.

You can make you phone easy full stock with locked bootloader, like described here.
They won't even see you ever had a custom ROM.

i took the risk and unlocked my bootloader successfully , i'm now flashing clockwork mod, the version that is in the stickied post with instructions, so with my phone and the way the bootloader is unlocked with s on, could i install a ics rom ?
edit: cwm flashed , just need to choose a rom xD
Hi
Sorry for the dumb question, I dont want to root my phone (the Barclays app, I know it can be worked around) but do want to play with ROMS. All the instructions I've read say to root the phone, but do I have to to be able to put new ROMs on. Thanks a lot in advance.
Yes you obviously need to be rooted to unlock your bootloader, to flash a recovery and to flash ROMs

If you want to install Stock custom Roms like MagicRom you will need only root
but if you want to instal a Custom Rom like cyanogen-mod, miui you will need root and unlocked bootloader

It's true only if the rom doesn't have a custom kernel and most roms do. If the kernel changes, you need to unlock the bootloader. Also, you can't flash a custom recovery without unlocked bootloader.
I updated my htc one m7 to 5.0.2 just couple days ago. My question now is that can i root my phone just regular way. I mean; first open bootloader with htcdev and then using twrp recovery. If so, what version of twrp i should use. I know that this question is maybe a noob question but i want to do this right.
Thanks for your responses!

What steps have you done on your device till now?
I suppose you have only unlocked the device (when you enter hboot you will see the text UNLOCKED if that is true), so next to do will be flash the recovery and then from the recovery flash the zip file with supersu and that's it, once you have supersu in place you are ready to run apps that need root privilegies.
