How can I disable "Cell Standby"?
I have an i9000 running Team ICSSGS RC4.2, and I want to disable the cellular radio completely. I use the device as an mp3 player, without a SIM Card.
I am getting 8-10% Battery Usage from Cell Standby.
I have tried disabling the following apk's, and rebooting:
mms.apk
phone.apk
telephony.provider.apk
voice.dialer.apk
nothing seems to get rid of it. I have looked up various ways of performing this same task but nothing seems to work at all.
Does anyone have any other ideas for me?
Thats why u have Airplane mode ryt?
Airplane mode does not seem to stop the cellular radio completely, i was mainly just seeing what other ways people might have to disable it.

One of the big complaints from all published reviews is the lack of battery power - about 4 hours maximum. I have an idea I to present.
I have the T-Mobile version, but I use my S7 at home; in fact I never activated the device on T-Mobile. I think that part of the problem with battery drain is that one cannot turn off the 3G modem. The S7 automatically disables the connection to 3G when the WiFi connects, but the modem is still working (there is still a signal strength on the task bar).
From past experience with phones, that 3G modem drains a lot of power.
Does anyone know of a way to disable the modem itself? I'm not interested in rooting at this point, but maybe there is some setting I am missing?
If you load DJ_Steve's S7 ROM, there is a hack to disable the RIL. That gave me much better battery life.
I just leave mine in airplane mode with no SIM inserted, enable and disable wifi as needed.
First off, what's RIL?
Second, I've also heard that the cellular is trying to connect on the software side. Any truth to this?
I'm wondering how this tab might fare, battery-wise, with it not pinging for a cell signal and 3G (or 4G, depending on the signal you get, or both and only 1x active) off. Can you set it so only one radio is getting play? Also, can you set profiles so that one gets used over the other? Example:
Screen off = 2G only
Screen on = 3G only
Internet apps (such as browser and YouTube) = 4G only

One of the posts above indicates that he is using a hacked software version, and the battery life is indeed much better without 3G.
Using airplane mode would work if I was only using the device to read books, for example, but I generally use it for online work.
I think the replies confirm my suspicion that the 3G modem is drinking the juice. Not too much of a hassle since I keep it at home next to the charge cable, but (especially with that non standard charge cable) it will not be so good outside the house (unless one is using the T-Mobile 3G, but that takes $$).

I use mine similar to this but I have a sim card in as well. I have a widget for airplane mode and one for wifi on my main home screen. I have airplane mode and wifi enabled most of the time but when I am out and need data (not very often) I just disable airplane mode for a short time.
This works well and the battery life is more like a minor inconvenience.
To do this same thing manually I'm sure juice defender ultimate should work since you could set up profiles for wifi, 2g and 3g (disclaimer: I haven't tested that idea but some people on this forum have juice defender ultimate and might be able to comment)

The problem is that when the WiFi is on, so is the 3g. I confirmed this with my battery widget; 57% of the battery drain was due to the 3g modem IIRC.

If you activate wifi by turning airplane mode off then the 3g radio will stay on in the background while you are using wifi.
If you turn on airplane mode then wifi you will only have wifi active. Just make sure that the airplane mode symbol is on in the top right beside the wifi icon.

Thanks, I will try it tonight! That should improve my battery life a lot. I'll report back.
Wow,
That worked great. I didn't realize that flight mode did not override all radios. Thanks for the tip!

This has also worked for me with the SIM inserted. I get great sleep times with new OTA upgrade left at default settings and keeping the S7 in airplane mode, unless charging. I only turn on wifi when I need it.
Also very important: if you're using the S7 only with wifi, turn background sync off from the power widget, when you are setting the tablet aside for some time. I believe this is where the battery drain actually occurs. If background sync is left on, the S7 continues to try to update location services and your various accounts, even though airplane mode is on.
I have "slept" the S7 (airplane mode with wifi off and background sync off) when I get to work at about 90% charge and come back to it at the end of the day at 75%, ready for the commute home.

Lately my SGS running Froyo 2.2.1 has started acting strangely. There is an annoying bug I've noticed and I wondered if anyone else had noticed it or found a fix.
In Wi-Fi settings I've set the time out to 14 seconds, using OCLF, then I set Wi-Fi sleep policy to "Never when plugged in". I've found that this increases my battery life by at least three hours.
Lately this setting has been switching itself back to "Never" and thus my battery life is reduced. Has anyone encountered this or know of a fix?
Back up data and try a factory reset .Undo lagfix first if any .
does OCLF work correctly on 2.2.1 check the faqs .
jje
Tried all that. I'm not using the lagfix component of OCLF as 2.2.1 doesn't need it IMO. I'm simply using the Wifi Timeout function, which does require Ext 2 Tools. All is compatible with 2.2.1.
I think I may have located the "bug". I recently installed Winamp and activated the wifi component of that. This of course requires wifi even in sleep mode if it is to enable playing of mp3 files over the wireless network. I've uninstalled it and will monitor.
..but are you sure this increases battery life....i mean if wifi is not enabled ordinary net functions are made by data phone network.....maybe your battery life time is related to some other thing ???
No, because I disable packet data when in a wifi network. There is still some gain in disabling wifi even if packet data is no disabled though as seeking a wifi signal does use energy. For this reason I also disable wifi when there is only packet data available.
I hope this hasn't been covered, a search (here and on Google) did not really help.
On my XT860 I seem to have an open internet connection constantly. When WiFi is turned off, HSDPA (or EDGE) is show as active constantly.
I think this was not the case in the beginning but I am not really sure about that as restoring a (very early) backup does not solve the problem.
I killed every single App about a hundred times but without any changes in this behaviour.
Turning data save mode on is of no use either. Statistics show very little activity (Upload/download) anyway, so that's not it. It's just that it stays connected all the time without doing anything (other than draining the battery).
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Or which steps I could take to narrow the problem down? Or is it even 'normal' (albeit annoying) behaviour?
I would be grateful for any input as I am running out of ideas what to try.
SETTINGS>BATTERY&DATA MANAGER>DATA DELIVERY, and disable "Data enabled" and "Background data"
for a better battery life, disable also UMTS/3G networks, only 2G remaining active.

Thanks but disabling background data does not seem to change much. The H+ symbol is still there all the time.
I do not want to disable data altogether as this basically render many functions useless.
Or is this just normal? Is the symbol there all the time when data is enabled and WiFi is off?
Considering that they don't bother to explain the status icons in the manual I wouldn't know...
My SGT7 does not have any SIM cards in it, I don't use it as my main phone, and will most likely never have to call 911 or other emergency numbers (from this tablet anyway). So pretty much, I have no need for the cell radio.
I want to just disable the cell radio from doing anything (from what I see, I've been on battery for 3hrs so far, and Cell standby is at 19%). The battery usage is probably not too bad at all, but having cell standby do nothing at all would be ideal.
An idea I had would be that when I restock to Gingerbread (via Overcome's guide), I just don't flash the modem file. Not sure if this would be a "good" idea or not though.
you can set to flight mode, then turn on wifi or bluetooth or gps or other radios at will.

Yea but to my knowledge, you have to do this every boot. I was rather hoping for something else :/
Is it CM9?
I am on Overcome 4.1 and the setting sticks on reboot.
Why don't you give it a quick try? Been using this since Roto JMI Froyo rom through all overcome series. I don't have a SIM card in my slot.

Hmm, I could of sworn on another ROM, that setting didn't stick. I'm on CM9 now though and the settings stick Thx!
I do the same. I have mine in airplane mode all the time. Wifi reconnects on reboot. Battery lasts days. Used to use it as phone with BT but got sick of carrying it with me everywhere.
I just tried this on Gingerbread (Hyperdroid) and the wireless doesn't automatically re-enable itself on reboot :/
Switching on Airplane mode is not an option for me to kill my cell standby/cellular radio standby 40% battery drain. My kid uses madden mobile (and other apps) and they will not run with airplane mode on. (Eventhough wifi is on and connected (and internet is working fine with the browser and other apps).
I need to switch off the cell standby (radio) that is using up 40% of a 10,000mah battery on this android tablet.
I found that going into your file explorer and changing all "tele***.apk" files to .bak instead will kill these dialers for searching for signals all day. Battery doctor can help some too. We use 4.4.2 KitKat. possibly download from play store 'toggle cell' and 'data on off'.
If you can find any other .apk files on your device like phone.apk or telephony.apk, these need to be disabled or changed to .bak
I am not sure what cell radio does for me. I occasionally use mobile phone but normally have it in flight mode. I do not use blue tooth or radio broadcasts. I stopped using GPS as it seems to drain the battery. Do I need cell radio and if not, how do I uninstall it?
My carrier's 3G reception is very poor in some areas in the building where I work. Quite often I lose internet when the line switches to GSM mode, but the most annoying thing is the internet remains permanently disabled even when 3G is available again. Only a reboot fixes this.
I've tried disabling and reenabling mobile data, disabled stamina mode, changing to either WCDMA or GSM only modes, but this problem keeps happening. I'm thinking of switching carrier as a last resort, but I wonder if anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it? My phone's bootloader locked, on eXistenZ ROM.
i had the same problem after modifying the /system/etc/fast-dormancy/fd_custm_conf.txt file to reduce the number of fast dormancy wakelocks. any chance you used the same tweak as well?
I didn't tweak fast dormancy. do you still have this problem?
Not sure what I did because now this problem happens far less often. If it happens, it can be fixed by turning on airplane mode for 2-3 minutes.
