Ok, so i am sure this is a "noob" type question but here goes.... How do i get my captivate to play audio through the usb cable??? I have a new stereo in my truck that has a usb input but for some reason i can't get it to recognize my phone. I am currently running Slim's ICS Rom and whenever i plug in the usb it automatically goes into usb debugging. Please help, i know this is probably and easy question for some of you but i am having difficulty with this.
Have you tried turning off USB debugging? Settings - Applications - Development - USB debugging. Once you do that, it might recognize it.
You'll probably also want to pay attention to where on the phone it's looking for audio files and update your folder structure accordingly (e.g. if it's looking on the external SD, put your music there, if internal SD, put it there).
Have pulling the notification bar and press connect USB...

i thought the "usb connect" was only for transferring data/files from pc to phone. i know when i was stock (and some previous ROMS) there was a Media Player or Mass Storage option also when connecting the usb cable, but i do not see that as an option with this ROM. I will try and move the music to the internal RAM (now it's on external sd card) and see if that helps.
Well you must have a option to mound your sd card I you do that your you stereo will detect you phone and read you music file try putting your all you media into the music file if you mound your sd card it should read it but if it doesn't try changing your cable... : )

ok, the external sd card is mounted to the phone. i put music on both the external sd and the internal memory, tried to "connect usb" when asked and still my stereo does not find music to play. i thought i read some place before that i need the car/home dock app so i tried that and still no luck.
any other suggestions?????

I think all you have to do is to slide top panel in SGS down and click on USB notification to mount your phone storage.

Personally didn't figure it out till a week into owning the phone that there was an extra step
involved in activating mass storage mode.
As mentioned, just slide down the top taskbar, click on the usb alert box and mount.
Thanks guys i knew that, i have been using android lately on desire. Well i solved the issue by downloading a driver.

Sorry to highjack this thread but - do we need to use the "safely remove hardware" on the PC and "remount SD card" on the phone before unplugging the USB cable?

Supposedly, one should firstly "safely remove hardware" via the usb window on the PC anytime there is
a need to sever a USB connection to a device.
However, in all honesty, I only know a handful of people who ever do this, and I'm not one of them.
Most if not all products with connections via USB won't be affected when it is just manually unplugged (disconnected from usb port)
unless you have data being transferred while you unplug/disconnect the usb device.
But for devices with their own proprietary OSes (PMP, MID, MP3 players, phones, etc.), it is recommended
you follow whatever steps they provide for you in the manual.

Thanks. I kinda freaked out today when I clicked "safely remove hardware" AND "remount internal SD card" on the SGS. The device later failed to recognize the internal SD card and screen went black. I thought I had bricked it and killed my internal SD. From now on, I might use an external microSD card to transfer movies into my device.
I'm having an issue playing music through USB on my Pioneer car stereo. I've tried mass storage and music player modes with USB debugging turned on and off with no luck. Any one else experience this?

I have the exact same problem. Still cannot figure out how to play music through USB port on my car stereo system. I was able to do this with my old Iphone 3G but not on Captivate. But I was able to stream music using Bluetooth feature on Captivate onto my car stereo system.
Did you mount the sdcards while in mass storage mode, just like hooking up to the computer. My Pioneer, and my JVC deck do it just fine, it treats them as a flash drive. The one that doesnt work is my first gen Sync system in my Focus.
I use an aux cable. Sound quality is just fine with my epic. I have a 5000watt system in my car controled threw my pioneer h/u

I have tried that also. I'm using Cognition Beta 6 if that helps.

No it is on the internal SD card
The best way to do this is to get an external microSD card and format it to FAT32. Car stereos only seem to recognize that file format. You probably want debugging off and the phone in mass storage mode while driving.

Needs to be on the external card for me.
Moving to external SD didn't help
yeh didn't use to work for me, but after putting an external card in the slot (sandisk 32gb) and updating to stock jh7 (not sure which one did it)
it works now. however only recognises the external card.
I think its a problem with something in the beta 2.2 firmwares. If I go back to 2.1 everything works if I go to any 2.2 variant it doesn't work. I guess its the price to pay for beta, but hopefully it gets resolved in the final revisions.
I just reformatted my SD card, and now my phone can't be discovered through winamp. I seem to remember having to make a file to put on the root of the SD card for it to happen, but my searches don't work. Anyone?
bump? Nobody has any advice for me?
Well if the SD card is mounted then it will not be discover able through any app on the phone because the computer has complete control over it. And winamp automatically mounts the SD card to the pc when you connect the USB cable so you will need to go in winamp settings and disable the auto-mount setting.
Sorry my post was unclear, I'm trying to sync my phone with winamp on my pc.
Ok now sorry but I'm lost what exactly do you mean?? You want to sync your phone with the pc using winamp or your trying to sync music on your pc into winamp?
Im trying to sync music from my pc onto my phone using winamp(on my pc). I do not have winamp on the phone. It was working fine until i formatted my sd card. The H drive will show up under my computers, but winamp will not recognize an android device, like it did before.
Well according to this link all you need is the desktop app and winamp on your phone http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/wireless-music-sync-winamp-media-player-android/
I noticed that my phone is no longer recognized as a removable flash drive when connected to USB (like my all old devices). But the problem is that copying files to it takes too much time. How to remove this ****ty "Portable Device" way of recognizing my Z1 !?? I want the old "removable flash drive" way of recognizing, AT LEAST for my SD card. I don't care for the internal memory, but I don't want to see my microSD recognized as a Portable Device and I don't want to wait the whole day for transfering only one folder of music.

Thank you. Somebody told me that this can't be changed but after switching to mass storage my SD card now works normally. Unfortunately, now I can't see my internal storage. But I'll switch to MTP when I want to access my internal storage.

Hi, looking for some help/advice please.
I've just taken ownership of a new car and, as it was dealer stock it didn't have Bluetooth audio as standard. I have tried connecting my phone via USB but to no avail. In my old car music would not work over USB but I got over this as I could stream over Bluetooth. For info the old car was a Ford and the new car is a BMW. I have updated the headunit in the car with the latest software and my phone has all updates applied. I have also tried connecting via MTP and MSC. As MTP my car sees the internal memory but not the external SD card. In MSC my car does not see the phone at all. I read somewhere about KitKat changing the access over USB to the SD card but I don't recall it working on the old car previously (although this was always MTP).
Anyone have any experience of the phone working over USB with a 2014 BMW fitted with the professional head unit? Is there a different ROM I can install on my phone to get it working (currently stock). Ideally I wouldn't want to change the ROM on my phone but my options at the moment are either change the software on the phone, change the phone or program extended Bluetooth on my car and invalidate the warranty.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Mark
Are you able to play music from the internal memory via USB? If so, could you use folder mount to make a link from an internal folder to one in the external SD?

I didn't have any music on the internal SD card but I do remember seeing the internal card on one of the tests I did. I'm at work at the moment so without my car for another week but I'll give that a try. I'll also have a read on rooting my phone as I see that folder mount requires root. I've definitely got some learning to do .
Thanks for your suggestion and I'll let you know how I get one.
