I see some devs tweak Kernels and all to make what they have faster, and other devs work on porting other device builds but is anyone talented enough to build a Frankenstein droid?
The leaked Sholes screen shots running 2.0 kinda seem like it will be a whole new UI experience while using the device but the GUI is all still there, can we have some fun and start making different GUI's for Android?
There's the app drawer, task bar, three screens etc etc.
Why not mix and match if we can?
The Pulse's Wizcards and 3x3 display of home screens and the pull down notfication of new messages
The Blur's happening widget
Move the notification bar to the bottom
Put the app tab only on one screen
etc?
i would like to see someone make a whole new os on these android phones so we can say f u to google, maybe a full out linux distro based of debian like moblin

I think a major thing about making a new OS would be its incompatibility with the Android market and apps, I'd like to see a new GUI working with the Android apps.
if you got it debian based than you have way more options but a new os that worked with android apps would be the ****, i would love a awesome new os with compatibility
I might have to be an asshole and post this in Android Development section to catch some devs eyes.
Ive heard it may be possible to port ubuntu's mobile os to the g1....if that can be done, the sky's the limit
GNOME or KDE port would be AWESOME!!! Would most likely run REALLLLYYYYYY slow...
After seeing footage of CES with lots of 4g/LTE phones, im really impressed by that unnamed LTE Verizon Touchwiz3.0 device they were showing there.
But one thing struck me; It was running some improvements i also saw on some other US phones, while the european version, the i9000 does not have those tweaks.
Such as the ability to pick your first homescreen to wich it returns after pressing home... or that awesomesauce clock it's running...still accuweather, but a lot sexier!
I got me wondering if the GTi9000 or any SGS-phone will ever see those fine widgets?
Find similar widgets/whatever on the market?
Alternative launcher apps already have all that additional functionality (and probably more).. zeam lets you choose which is home, how many screens there are, how many rows/columns, default settings for a ton of stuff, and tons of other stuff I can't even remember.
For the clock I use fancy widget, that looks pretty nice
All that stuff drains the battery anyway. When the applications on markets grow, there will be apps that suit your needs, don't worry!

Yes, allright!
I allready have tried ADW and LP and i believe they all give the option to set wich screen is home, but i don't know, the feeling of everything stock just feels right!
This is the way samsung designed their S-life based platform, so i tend to stick with it as long as it is useable. And frankly; right now it is useable with 2.2.1. I just miss some more samsung widgets, such as a music player widget, or a dedicated mail widget for their touchwiz social hub system. And i'd like to see the daily briefing widget optimized, because it really boggs down the whole system when you use it...even after their newest update!
I mean seriously... I installed the Google clock app and Google calendar because the Huawei apps fail at the basic controls and after Android 7 they force their crap controls on other apps? Honestly, I am super passed.
I wish they could keep the alarm clock from Android 6/EMUI 4. The alarm clock on 7 looks so crap and undone.
I'm going to give a slightly more in-depth review of the new Android release for our phones, and why you should _NOT_ install it. In fact, I think EMUI 4.X blows 5.X out of the water.
Breaking down my major gripes with the system:
Battery life is terrible. I am yet to pinpoint the source of the drain, and without rooting I don't really have the ability to do a whole lot about it. Exact same settings and usage that I had on EMUI 4.X and instead of being able to go two days without a charge, I'm having to charge it constantly. It appears to be a mixture of software and hardware, which in my opinion, means that Huawei put very little effort into optimizing this software for their hardware.
Notifications are trash. Seriously. They're ugly, and not nearly as functional as their prior iteration. Spotify for example had a decent lockscreen functionality in EMUI 4.X -- That's now gone, replaced with a banner style widget. The default Google banner-style widget. So... Huawei pretty much left everything stock. This has been slapped together hastily. My gripe in this particular situation? Googles default banner widget is so thin, you can barely use the seek/play/pause functionality without accidentally mashing something you're not meaning to. --- Beyond that, there are bugs with text notifications. Example: If you get a text while you have that persons text conversation open in the stock messaging app, and they send another text, even though you're looking right at it you get a banner. The banner stays until you tap it. ...Seriously Huawei?
Apps, UI, other issues. Messaging, again. They've added an emoji icon into the text input area. You can't get rid of it. It wasn't there before, but now it's a permanent fixture. How about two more emoji icons on your keyboard? Sound annoying? It is. The "obvious" solution is to install other software to appeal to my pedantic needs. Or Huawei can stop making superfluous changes to their software. Black background on notification drawer, white banners... very sexy. Can't move certain icons in the app drawer (IE: You can move "Mobile Data" toggle, but not "Settings").
I won't keep ranting on and on, but Huawei seriously, seriously dropped the ball on this one. It's almost embarrassing in fact. There's a reason this upgrade hasn't been released worldwide, and if Huawei can't iron out their problems, I would never recommend it to any user who enjoyed anything about EMUI.
Verdict, in my opinion: Stick with EMUI 4.X - Root it. Enjoy.

Wish you told me before I read your review..lol
I don't mind it so far, notifications are pretty crappy. Currently, I am using Google Keyboard a lot better than the built-in one.
My annoyance is that I use LastPass, Yaste and DoubleTwist apps, which should stay in the notification panel if I am using them even though the phone locks and it closes then on lock.
I have checked the power management and rebooted as well, but LastPass etc.. disappear from the nofication panel.

Haha, well I had to try it for a couple of days at least to make sure I was justified in disliking it so much.
I'll be rolling back today though, if I run into any issues with this I'll be sure to post any potential work arounds.

I guess its all depends on how you use your phone and what apps you got. I have 0 issues with EMUI 5.0 and I actually recommend it over EMUI 4.x. Battery life for me is slightly better thanks to the improved Doze and Vulcan API. Performance has improved, especially in the touch responsiveness of the UI (again, thanks to native support to Vulcan). I have no issues with the notification since all of the apps I use is clearly visible and functions properly. In regards to Apps, UI and etc... Well, I am using Nova Launcher Prime and I have customized it to the way I like it and also using SwiftKey so I dont get any of the keyboard issues you are reporting and I use Textra for my messaging and works perfectly fine.
So I guess its all depends on what apps you have and how you like your interface set up.

Not gonna PM just yet. I've had a hell of a time thusfar, still trying to find a method to get back to absolute stock (which would require our stock oeminfo I think, which I don't have, honestly I'm not even 100% sure).
Right now it says I'm on software version C900B140 -- I don't know wtf this is lol -- I'll figure it out though, at least it's working after 3 hours of bootlooping.
Hi,
U can rollback with unbranding but, it's painfull I struggled with it most of the week end.
(will redo it cause i want a root most of my apps need it).
Cheers

It was ****, but I was able to rollback to a C432 build. You're stuck with this version now, but there's a rollback thread somewhere around here with the instructions that work. I can't find it off hand, but googling "P9 Rollback" or searching for it on here should help. You're basically following the rollback instructions and then following the debrand instructions up until the point where you're asked to use Huawei Updater 2.0.
I installed, got to 4.1.1 -- disabled updates. Plan on staying here for a while.

Do i need to unlock bootloader to perform a rollback?
C900Bxx is a hybrid from flashing one firmware, say C432, over another, say C02. It won't receive any updates but can be 'rebranded' by flashing new oeminfo.img
Android 7 is way, way better than 6 - snappier, more responsive, better battery life, and as for Huawei apps overdrawing Google ones - like Calendar, Clock, etc - it doesn't happen with me, period.
Still, YMMV, and everyone's got their own tastes and opinions - including me lol.
Peace.
It doesn't happen for you? Okay, maybe I should do a factory reset.
Recently grabbed a Note 8 (this is the first phone I haven't rooted my first day of owning) Rooted my Pixel XL and for some reason it just kept randomly rebooting on me or shutting off entirely before completely being a brick 9 months after the $900 purchase. So I didn't want to risk it again with the new one in case it was something I screwed up. (Although phone place told me it was the mobo).
That said, I installed Atom Launcher which is my favorite Launcher atm and when I try and use it I get the message "Workspace Not Supported" as much reading as I've done it seems like it may be a Knox issue? I searched around on XDA and read a few things about people being able to use other Launchers on the Note 8 but no info on this particular message that immediately stood out.
Do I have to root the device to use a Launcher other than TouchWiz?
If not, what's the best fix to get Atom Launcher to Work?
If I do have to root the device to use an alternate launcher I'm aware (last I read on XDA) it will trip the warranty void
Thank you all!

I'm not familiar with Atom Launcher, but I have used Nova Launcher on my Note 8 without any issues or special settings. Root isn't needed to install a different launcher. Not sure why atom gives you that message though. Btw, what model Note 8 are you using?

I used to use Nova and found Atom to be more to my liking. That said you're right Nova does work on my Note 8 so I may just have to settle. I mean overall it's a pretty good launcher, was just hoping to instantly set up my home screens as they were on my old phone from the Atom backup. I'll probably eventually root anyway but for now Nova it is, thanks for the reminder.
BTW, SM-N950U on Sprint (used to be with Ting but couldn't get a GSM Sim to work either, and Sprint wouldn't unlock).
I had found a workaround for this by selecting it manually in app settings and all has been fine, but now with the Android 9 Ota it refuses to use atom launcher any way I try. Anyone know of a solution for Android 9?
Resolved the issue for S9 Plus using Android 9
I been using ATOM launcher for many long years. I cant live without it. It is the simplest and light weight launcher that has all the customisation you need. I have the same customised screen layout using ATOM for all my androids and its somewhat like iOS, where I been able to maintain the same functional layout with all versions of android mobiles I had.
Enough bragging about ATOM.
I was also getting Workspace are not supported message, after my phone updated to Android 9 and subsequently it also updated Samsung's builtin launcher called "One UI Home" (I'll abbreviate to OUH for this post).
Since the phone force updated OUH on me, the update consequently applied OUH as the default Home launcher. And from there I could not set ATOM launcher as the default home launcher (in Settings>Apps>Default Apps), and when attempting to change ATOM launcher I'd greyed out with a label "Workspaces are not supported".
I was able to fix the issue with a different approach. Which was the following steps
1. Go to Phone Settings>Apps>One UI Home
2. In the Apps Info screen for OUH, scroll down and click on the button called "Set as default"
3. In the set as default screen, clear all defaults by clicking on clear defaults.
4. Now click on your home button and it should prompt you with which launcher you want set default as for the Home button, where you select ATOM launcher and click always.
5. You have now set ATOM launcher as the default app to launch from Home button clicks.
In short, you need to clear the the defaults from the phones built in launcher (or whatever launcher is hogging the home button), so the default is not set to anything and than you are able to set defaults to ATOM launcher or whatever launcher that was having the "Workspaces are not found" issue.
My guess is that built in launcher as high privileges where if it is applied as default it reserves access permission/functions from other apps.
I hope you guys can carry on using ATOM launcher. I wish the developer was still active. This is too underrated app and easily makes most popular launchers look cumbersome and overly complicated. ATOM is seriously the best.
Still doesnt.
Im using a Samsung A10s and it still says "Workspace not Supported"
I'm interested in your opinions on the Microsoft Launcher, especially if you are on it or were. This looks pretty good to me: Microsoft Launcher Review
In the past, I tended to return to the phone's native launcher because:
1. It ended up being actually better all around for what I wanted to get done.
2. It's easier to leverage other people's experience.
My reasons for going with 3rd Party launchers have been:
1. OEM was not as flexible. I can't seem to get the dark theme even with LWP+. All of my Setup screens are still black on white. It's a checkbox on the Microsoft Launcher. I can lay things out with as many icons on a row as I want and can even get my own icons for the things that have icons that make no logical sense.
2. After a factory reset you can restore your setup. With OEM you cannot unless you have root and restore from TWRP. I don't have root for the first time with my Note 9.
3. You can bring the same interface it to any Android phone such as from a Samsung to a Pixel 2 (LG) with no costly layout time and learning curve.
I don't know if it affects battery life or not. I'm used to having root so I don't know if there are apps that let me see what sucks on the battery and what doesn't.
I'm also interested in the best way to put to sleep battery suckers for processes I don't use.
Thanks!
Been on it for a while now.... And honestly I love it. It really is so useful. It has time-line built in. It has loads of customization like for example probably the best implementation of adaptive icons I've ever seen. Every last one of my icons are the shape I choose without that stupid white background. It actually convinced me to switch back to using outlook as my main client and it's been so long since I had some of the most basic email features on mobile I forgot how nice it is. I hope they continue this project. I also started testing using edge as my browser by forcing it as default and my battery usage while online seems to be better... Could be placebo. Gotta say aside from some optimization issues/ redraws here and there I've been super happy with my decision to try it out. I have religiously used pixel Launcher or the open source version here on xda called rootless launcher for years. It's been eye opening for sure... I previously used Nova and a few others but so far I'm sticking with this new Microsoft project to try and diversify my digital footprint considering I've spent the better part of my adult life freely giving away my personal info to Google without a single thought.

I just figured out I forgot to subscribe to my own thread.
That thing is a lot more than a launcher. It's an environment administrator that seems to have forgotten what Android and Samsung say are impossible.
Question: I have all of my apps organized into folders. If I try it out, will it blow those up?
Thanks!
I have all mine in folders but I don't know for sure if it will allow them to import. It did import all my widgets and settings though so I'd assume the same for the folders.

Got it! I'm not sure if I'll do Microsoft, Nova or stock.
The more I work with the new TouchWiz, the more I think when they say TouchWiz is getting pretty close, my response is close to what, infuriating people? Just trying to get a black theme with the TouchWiz is a challenge while with Microsoft and most apps it's a checkbox. TouchWiz has zero control over icon size, spacing, shortcut text, behavior, gestures, or anything else. I have multiple file managers that all are labeled File Manager and I can't even rename one of the to Asus File Manager. TouchWiz on KitKat even works better. I can get black anytime I want to and with folders, I can see enough of the cascaded icons to know what is in it, and I can arrange them so the most important one is in the forefront. With Oreo, I can download a black theme if I set up a Samsung account and give them rights to everything but the 3 digit codes on credit cards, and allow them to use the information for any purpose and give it to anyone. Their privacy policy makes Google look like a saint.
Thanks for your feedback!
