The SGN is my first android phone... and I love it BUT...
Why cant I find a web browser that will remember all the open tabs i was looking at when i closed it - so that when i re-open the web browser it will open all the tabs i had open previously?
This is how ALL browsers work on PC's and iphones -
I have tried about 4 of the most popular browsers now to no avail - what is the problem?
hmm have you tried Dolphin Browser Mini?? it works on my Note and I LOVE it. it opens up tabs that I've kept open from last browsing session. Some browsers though do have an option that'll clear history upon exiting, maybe u have that ticked off?

Hi - Yes i have tried Dolphin Browser mini on my SGN and it is a very good light browser. I opened 3 tabs and then i tapped exit (the circle with the x in it) to close the application. When i open the application again my 3 tabs are gone and replaced with 1 tab which is the Dolphin start page(Dolphin Blog, google twitter, wallpaper, facebook).
I have looked at the toolbox and settings but can not find an option to remeber the tabs.
Are you sure you are closing the application or just putting it in the background? in the background it will keep the tabs since the application is still open
-Mitch
Have you tried Opera? Definitely my favourite browser and does what you require.
Edit: sorry, scratch that. Got confused with the non mobile Opera! Never been an issue for me though because I don't close my browser
Use opera mobile, don't know if it works on opera mini. When I want to open the same tabs next time, I terminate opera mobile with task manager.
install Opera mobile, enable exit button in preferences then close it using that button instead of return key I assure you it will remember your open tabs
correction -IT DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK ALL. THE. TIME, HOW ANNOYING, BUT AS SUGGESTED EARLIER EXITING VIA. TASK. MANAGER SEEMS TO.WORK

Chrome beta...that the one....
But work on ICS 4.0.3 only

Opera mobile. It always remembers my tabs. Can actually get annoying because if I've been reading a lot of stories by clicking through taptu, I have to go on manually every few days and close like 80 tabs that opera has saved for me.

browser remebering tabs
I am not ready for ICS yet - will upgrade to it when it is 100% ready for SGN!!!
Tried Opera Mobile I opened 3 tabs (would be nice if the tabs were along the top)
I then tapped the big O bottom right and tapped Exit. When I restarted the application all 3 tabs were gone - i looked in settings and there is no option to remember tabs.
How did u get Opera Mobile to remember your tabs on exit and restart?
Terminate opera mobile using task manager.
Long press home key, select task man.

I use opera. I just home button out and it always remembers my tabs. I try and close them from time to time. I had 15 open at one point... Then I said that's too many sites xD So I started to close them. hehe.
Xmarks also has a feature to remember desktop opened websites so you can sync those, too.
overskreen has a config option so you can decide whether or not to preserve open tabs. It's not free, but it's worth paying for if you like having a trully multi-windowed browsing experience on your phone.

you have to enable the exit button first by going to settings -advanced-enable exit button
but like I said before if you want it to remember your tabs you have to manually kill opera in the task manager.
opera mobile used to remember my tabs in my old Nokia phones Dont know why it isn't working with Android

append -
this is from the opera website
Automatically save browsing sessions if Opera Mini is killed by the system while in the background. Your session is restored if Opera is re-opened within 60 minutes.
so I guess you have to kill opera manually for it to remember sessions and Dont forget to open within the hour

I could not find that option in my over skreen...do you have a new version or something
i am on v1.4.3 and it's the second option in the settings. haven't actually tested it but assume it does what it says on the tin.
I think we're all having a different experience with opera. Mine remembers my tabs without any special behaviour, I just exit with the back or home buttons. I had over 80 tabs open the other day from the past few days.

yeah when you minimize your opera with 80+ tabs its killed by android automatically that's why it remembers your tabs all the time

What are my options for alternative browsers? What I dislike the most about the stock browser on this thing is that a lot of sites go into "mobile" mode. I dont spend 30 bucks a month to browse a dumbed down version of the internet
This is my first smartphone
EDIT: ok so i went with dolphin. is there a function similar to "about:debug" in dolphin. i know that in dolphin i can scroll down and hit classic view but i would rather have it always on.
Skyfire has the option to toggle between one or the other. Dunno about any others

There should be an option to select a desktop user agent instead of an android user agent in the settings of the stock browser.

Great tips above but i think there are plenty of other alts like Firefox (in beta), Skyfire (mentioned earlier), Dolphin (also mentioned earlier) and also the Opera Family (Mini, which is compressed on their servers or some nonesense like that, and Mobile, which is a full fledged browser) I like Firefox because i use it at home and its actually has a nice UI unlike some other browsers. Skyfire has video, and Dolphin is just solid. I'm not a huge fan of the Opera family but they are still good
Xfire browser let's you choose exactly what version of a site you see, whether its mobile, Android, regular, heck you can even spoof yourself as an iPhone.

1. Mobile sites are much more convenient and are usually designed for the smaller screen res and a limited selection methods or touch screens.
2. Type in "about:debug" into the url bar. Then hit menu->more->settings->UAString (down at bottom) -> select desktop. You may now type in "about:debug" to remove the extra dialogue options.
I, personally, wouldn't say it's dumbed down... It's streamlined for use on mobile devices. (loads quicket, better interface for device)
Yeah, you might miss mobile sites pretty soon.
xScope and Dolphin are the best IMO. You can easily toggle mobile in either. Skyfire is worth keeping in the app drawer for flash video every now and then.

So I just got the Note recently and so far I'm liking it (came from Iphone 4).... BUT, 1 thing that has GOT TO CHANGE!!! Is..... when I open stock browser and open tabs, if I close the browser and then go back to it my tabs are all gone!!! And it just shows home page...
Has anyone figured this out?? I haven't installed any task manager stuff. I need to get this fixed though. Is there a fix for this?
I've tried searching this forum and google but don't see much info. Most of the stuff I see says to uninstall task killers, but I didn't install anything just stock task manager for the Note.
I've tried different browsers also but none of them really seem to keep the tabs open, it is very annoying
Any ideas?
bump for friday!!!
This is more of a workaround.
Instead of exiting the browser with the back button, press the home button. When you go back to the browser (by long pressing the home button to access the running tasks) the tabs should still be there.
Probably best to have put this in the Q&A section
Thanks for the reply!! But this is what I'm doing... even that doesn't work. In fact, I don't use the back button too much, I mostly use the home button...
There is no fix for this? Can someone tell me the cause of it? Is it something to do with a Samsung task manager? Is there a new task manager I can install or seomthing I can tweak in the OS? Perhaps seomething in the browser config or task manager config?
I don't have this problem... especially with Dolphin Browser. Those bloody tabs persist after reboots. It is a pain in the arse to get rid of them, you have to kill them manually.
Any body else know a fix??
Maybe I'll try firefox see how that works. I did d/l dolphin but haven't tried yet
You can install ZDbox, it is an app that was developed by an Xda member. It has a task killer incorporated within the app where you can put the browser in the protected apps by long pressing and adding it. After you do this, the app will not be closed if you kill all other apps.
Let me know if it resolves the issue. (it is available for free in the market)
Why are you using stock browser anyway . It's crap . I never managed to download anything with it . And after " download " it can't parse it . Use OPERA MOBILE . ( NOT mini ) . You'll thank me later

Ok I tried ZDbox, however the browser doesnt even show up in the process list of ZDbox lol... It shows up in my task manager, but not in ZDbox.
I will just use a different browser... I see so many browsers, which is best? How does Opera compare with Firefox? I kinda like Maxthon also, but it isn't saving my tabs either
Download Opera. It's the fastest browser, as it uses hardware acceleration.
Its not witht stock browser. If you are opening too many apps and then press Home key, the Android system will put the browser to sleep but it keeps it in memory. If you launch another app at this point which asks for more RAM than there is available, Android will start exiting the apps that are residing in the memory. When that happens, the browser could also be force closed by the system. Dunno how to fix that since I am not a dev.
If you use other browsers, you wont have the GPU acceleration and hence smoothness, in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents.

The two of you should talk: his tabs don't stay and yours are hurting your ass
So how is everyone with the Note fixing or getting around this? I'm trying Opera now...
Well, after using the Opera browser... i gotta say I like it. EXCEPT it doesn't remember my tabs either!! It seems like none of the browsers are working right with tabs... unless i'm doing soemething wrong? Is there any way to remember tabs in opera mobile?
When I press the back button on Dolphin it ask if I want to close the browser or minimize it.
What would be nice is.... like Safari on iphone... if you kill it, it still opens up with all your tabs... or a desktop firefox, it always allows you to restore your previous session/tabs...
I HAVE to keep tabs open, instead of re-opening 5 pages/tabs evertime the browser just feels like forgetting them
Anybody know about the great Note browser mystery??
How long after you press home are you checking, if you leave it in sleep mode for some time, android will kill the high power consuming processes and that is why your tabs are not getting stored...
I think what you want is a browser which remembers your previous tabs and reload all of them whenever you open a browser.. i dont think stock or dolphin or opera has such an option, did you try the mobile version of firefox.. maybe it remebers tabs...
And to those people this is not about multitasking... it is just that he wants the browser to remember his tabs so that it can reload itself everytime a new instance opens...

YES!! thank you..thats exactly right! i've tried so many browsers so far and have yet to find one that does!! It seems so weird to me that none of these browsers have a session restore or tab restore option. let me try firefox... i haven't really tried it yet. BUT i just read firefox for andoird DOES have hardware acceleration... I'M ON IT! will report back
After using FF for a bit...I can report it is the same as other browsers There is no session restore and it closes my tabs also. When I launch it, it shows me my "previously closed tabs" but it won't let me restore them all......I have to click on each one to restore
So this is still a aproblem

Yes i know what you are saying. My question is why the sites see my phone as a phone and not as a desktop when the UA is set to desktop mode. i know that site has a desktop version. anyway i will live it like that. After some tests i saw that chrome works with desktop mode but it doesen t support flash. Thank you for the tips anyway
Yes chrome doesn't support flash as android jelly bean normally don't but u still can make flash work on some other browsers like dolphin or Firefox. Well Ur phone primarily sent information online that makes sites see it as a mobile device. But u can make it switch to normal browser.

There are a few ways to get around this issue.
If you use chrome then you can install a file in the data/local directory that will change the user agent of chrome permanently. Just Google running chrome for android in permanent desktop mode, don't forget to set permissions and remove .txt from the file.
Your second option is to use Firefox and add a new string to override useragent in the about:config menu. Again Google using Firefox for android in permanent desktop mode.
Then relax. Restart your phone and try out your browser. You no longer need to have to tick desktop mode, it's done automatically.

Stays in desktop mode. Most sites have it so you can change it to desktop version at the very bottom anyway.
If it changes when you update. Real easy to change back. Try it. Free

I understand you. But there are quite a few sites that don't have the switch at the bottom. There are others then that do still detect a mobile browser even on ticked desktop mode. The way I have it done its permanent desktop always.
It's having to keep switching to desktop mode all the time gets annoying.

Every time I launch Chrome browser (I'm sure I'm not the only one here!) it takes an age to be ready for me to type an address.
Even when the cursor appears in the address bar and the keyboard pops up, it's still not ready to type. When I impatiently start to type something the keyboard confuses presses for long presses, so I get numbers appearing instead of letters etc, a complete mess.
The wait is probably something like 20 -25 seconds, doesn't sound like a lot, but on a modern phone its aaaages! It's a shame, because the instantly-ready aspect is why I choose Chrome for Windows. Not so for the phone.
I have to say, the 'Internet' browser app that came with the phone is pretty instant, but does anyone have a recommendation for any other browsers that are pretty instant? I like the integration with my desktop that Chrome offers
Sorry guys - I guess I should have searched first!!
I'll have a look at Firefox, Opera, Dolphin, Boat etc!
Try opera and Next browser. Was using opera since my nokia N76 but this next browser is super fast and good looking.
P.S. chrome tends to lag a lot if you have it sync with desktop one.I guess it cant handle that many bookmarks or something.
