What happens when you take a monster 4.1 meter telescope in the southern hemisphere and point it at the same patch of sky for 55 hours?
This http://www.eso.org/public/archives/images/large/eso1213a.jpg
Just a word of warning the picture is 17,000 x 11,000 pixels and comes in at around 250mb so if you want to to view its best to have at least 8mb broadband
Ps don't forget to save it if you wanna view it again

.........., when you are put into the Vortex you are given just one momentary glimpse of the entire unimaginable infinity of creation, and somewhere in it a tiny little mark, a microscopic dot on a microscopic dot, which says, "You are here."

Note my DROID RAZR does not agree with this pic lol I can't zoom in and then it makes my phone slow down and my gallery app force closes lol. Amazing photo though I guess ill have to view it on my computer haha. I guess a 250mb photo is a little to much for a phone.

the weirdest thing about this is when you have the slightest understanding of general relativity, and look at this trying to connect the science behind it. SG-1 scenarios all over the place for sure, billions of past, ongoing and future civilizations in space, banned from visiting eachother via the awesome relativity laws
Do we have Cosmology/theoretical physics thread ?

Sorry to dissapoint you - but no. unfortunately. and sorry for the long post im about to write
Im kind of a science geek also, and Im updated with all the current stuff from theoretical physics and there is no actual way for us, or anybody out there to reach anyone else, or any other part of this picture apart from their starting point, for instance.
As it seems - the recent screw up with measuring neutrino speed was actually good for science (they taught that in 72 kilometers distance, neutrinos go 18 meters longer than photons but it was a mistake) cause it has been proven that Einstein was right, and that there is no higher possible speed than 299.792km/h (light in vacuum)
laws of universe are constant in every part of the universe, and for any kind of matter to go bigger distances there are only a couple of ways in theory:
1. entering some sort of "Hyperspace" (yeah, TV shows got that right) - long story short - we observe 3+1 dimensions, but on a much smaller scale, there is total of 11 dimensions (M theory) and our space-time configuration is only one of many combinations of all dimensions. If someone, somehow managed to change that, he would enter "hyperspace" where it would be possible to use "instant transmission", like Goku does. we are, on our current development scale, about 2000 years behind that discovery, and it may be very wrong (M theory, that is)
2. bending time-space: using artificial gravity, or using wormhole (blackhole that has sort of a tunnel that you could go through) - each method requires negative energy, that exist only in theory cause of the other theory called - vacuum energy. If someone is interested in that, I would offer explanation, and a simple one to understand. And we are also 2000 years behind that.
Seeing how we are more likely to kill ourselves before we get to the point where Gravity makes sense (biggest mystery in modern theoretical physics) - No, we wont go anywhere past the solar system.

think of it this way -
world record 100 meters running is: 9.58 meters, held by Usain Bolt from Jamaica. it has been long time (30 years when sport drugs came in) that record was ~9.80
and WHATEVER they do, and whit all the new drugs they invent - human wont be able to run it faster than 9 seconds.
Does that mean that somewhere in Africa there is an African man, that could do it in 6.5 seconds .. ? no. genetics are the same, gravity is the same, conditions are the same. now this is analogy that goes for: space-time-matter conditions all around the universe. they are the same. and ANY civilization that arose in universe would come to the same conclusions that we did. Aliens would have their Pitagoras, Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, Tesla, Bhor, Fermi, and so on, and they would also hit the milestone of the speed of light.
Kind of a proof that General relativity is right, and that there is no way of Faster-than-light travel is the fact that we humans didnt see anyone visit. And acording to science - Milky way is a perfect place for harboring earth-like planets suitable for carbon-based life (recent findings). There may very well be over 1 million civilizations just in ours galaxy, that CANT connect to each other.

Here's the thing those unstable planets for "Us" maybe stable for those out there? Ever think of that maybe there's other people out there that have passed us because of that there are so may factors that we 100% truly don't know.
Plus who knows maybe some can do a 100 meter dash in 9.57 and below I gurantee it.
Think there's a lot of talented people out their that just don't promote or bother to show others that they can achieve something.

Quit masturbating yourself. It might help you.
Although maybe it shouldn't be used more than a couple of times a week at most, 5 hour energy seems to work really well for me.
But be careful, contrary to the commercials, it can make you quite jittery. Once, I took an entire bottle (only 2 fluid ounces, which actually contains over 8000% of your daily B vitamin requirements) before a major exam, and was shaking the entire time.
My teacher thought I was having a nervous breakdown or problems with stress, and now seems to think I should get a stress buster and maybe a therapist too... but other than that it works great.
But like I said, be careful with it, I actually have a really stupid friend who had a heart attack from drinking too many energy drinks at the same time. So USE IT RESPONSIBLY!
Dave
Go and by yourself some Cranberry Juice.
That stuff makes you sleep... like KRZY!
If you take the caffine road, be careful of an overdose, my sister took some caffine pills that you can buy ower the counter here in sweden.
Had to pump her stomach
Making sport helps a lot. Don't know if you make some, if not just pick one up, that's healthy .
I noticed that when I don't make sport for some reasons, I'm getting less active and more quickly tired hehe.
1) Make sure there is nothing wrong with you - get your bloodwork checked out.
2) Make sure you sleep enough and regularly. Try going to bed and getting up at exactly the same time each day for a month, and make sure there are about 8 hours between those events (for some people the sweet spot is 7, for others 9). Do not deviate from these times. For some people this is completely unnecessary, others really need to do this. Especially if you have been sleeping irregularly for some time.
3) Make sure you eat right, i.e. getting the right vitamins you need. Having too little of some vitamins makes you tired. Having too much of other vitamins may kill you though Again, get yourself checked out - it is fairly common that your body may not 'handle' certain vitamins right, which again can make you dead tired. There are various ways to handle that, your doctor will know the best way for you if that is your problem. BUT, do NOT take general vitamin supplements. Most of the time taking those leads to having too many vitamins, which is just as bad as too little. You will get enough of most vitamins from whatever you eat, even if you don't eat healthy.
4) Stop drinking anything containing caffeine - period. Not drinking caffeine at all for weeks straight has pretty much the same effect as drinking caffeine daily The more caffeine you drink, the longer it takes for this to go normal again. Energy drinks, coffee, etc are all bad ideas if you want to be awake. Quit them altogether. (Remember caffeine is a drug!)
5) Stop drinking milk and similar dairy products. Milk is the primary dairy product that can cause what I'm about to explain, but it depends on yourself. Most people for example don't have this issue with yoghurt or cheese. About 1 in 10 people does not burn dairy products correctly - but a much smaller number actually knows this. The result is almost always getting tired. I personally know several people who suffer from this and not drinking milk, eating yoghurt etc solved most of their tiredness issues.
6) Don't drink any alcohol for a few weeks. Makes you tired if you drink more than your body can properly take care of (which isn't all that much).
7) Stop smoking. Also makes you tired.
8) Exercise! Helps a lot. And not just your body - do not forget your brain. Keep your mind occupied - throw away the TV (there's nothing worth watching on it anyway!)
9) Destress yourself. If you are having stress, do what it takes to get rid of it. Stress is a killer and wears you out if you have it for long periods of time.
Try doing all of the above for a month... I guarantee you will feel better. Once everything is settled again your body should be able to take some 'slacking' again for a while
Get a life, which obviously none of us have

I forgot to bring eye problems up. Do you wear contact lenses or did you notice that your view was somehow getting worse?
Both cases are pretty harsh for your brain, cause contact lenses are known to be tougher to wear than standard glasses (yes, that's also a question of habits and so on ), and if you have view problems (even small), then you brain tries hard to adapt but can't succeed it.
All of this make tired as hell, own experience speaking .

I was at work one day and my boss said I looked exhausted. I told him I wasn't sleeping that well. He suggested I spend less time around the computer at work then he unplugged my monitor. I then decided to take his advice within a week of using the computer 2-3hrs less a day, I was sleeping better and when I did not get the best sleep I had more energy.
So if time does not allow you to exercise, try stepping away from the computer when you are at home for a few hours less a day or even a week. See if that helps.
Yeah the problem nowaday for lots of people is that people use computer at work AND at home. That represents a large (huge) amount of the day (let's say one use the computer 6/8 hours at work + 3/5 hours at home, if not way more).
That way, yes, you get tired (why, I don't know, I'm no doc , but it certainly has to do with the light from the display, concentration and so on). At the same, you destroy your eyes, very modern sadely.
One thing I have heard and learned to do: never go to bed directly after switching off the tv or the cmputer, your head is then still too much working on what you saw or did before you get yourself in bed. Reading is friendlier.

I am sorry but girls in bikinis , men in bikinis , or girls in any sort of provocative dress whatsoever are not allowed in any holodeck programs on the Starship Cupertino by order of Captain Steve. 60 is always enough
and 30 is enough for it to move from slide show to movie
so I think you should just be content with your 40fps and hope for motion blur

I never really liked her much because.... well... she always seems a bit out of focus to me. I've never "been with" a babe of fewer than 10 megapixels and as I like to watch, and feel my way around, optical zoom and digital manipulation facilities are essential for me.

Hey guys/gals
Does any one remember the name of the movie kinda recent... 2000ish
where a government build computer with AI, that has access to all cell phones, satellites, and regular phones monitor everybody in the nation (USA as usual) every move, but one day it became crazy, and it (the AI) figured out the best way to run USA is to get rid of many key politicians and it causes "accidents" remotely like plane crash, train derailment, and traffic crashes fatalities, etc, etc...
then this guy a buddy that works in the FBI or secret service has some evidence about it, as the computer AI will automatically remove all the traces of the killings.
but the guy gets killed by the AI before it was able to reach the media about it.
then Some journalist and some dude some one gets involved into this whole conspiracy and eventually they make their way and into the actual under ground computer, where it tries to kill them, and some how they find the SD card where all the prof was hidden, in one of the panels where the computer has no eyes on.
*spoiler*
in the end they manages to destroy/damage the computer...
it's somewhat similar to "Enemy of the State" (1998) and might have been released around that time
Wasn't it called eagle eye? I remember it. It was with shia LeBouef or however he spells his last name lol

So basically my friend showed me the Reactor PC which is a watertight case with most of the components fully immersed in nonconductive fluid instead of regular closed water cooling and air systems. Even with multiple GPUs and when everything is maximum overclocked while playing intensive games the system didnt go above 70 degrees.
The problem with this little slice of awesome sauce is the big slice it'll take out of your wallet... $4500 for the base configuration! And the motherboards and such are all custom made by the company which means 1) no off the shelf upgradibility and 2) if the company goes down, well hope your happy with what you got.
To circumvent these downfalls, I had an awesome idea! Why not take a small, cheap aquarium (~12"^2), a small motherboard (MicroATX, 9.6"^2), and a few bottles of nonconductive fluid (I call it NCF for short) and make my own?
So that's where this thread comes in. I would like comments, suggestions, thoughts, ideas, etc. on this build. Everything is appreciated!
What I have planned:
Motherboard: MicroATX because a smaller board = a smaller aquarium = less NCF to buy and they still have all the functions and slots I want.Aquarium: As close to mobo size as possible, again to save on NCF.NCF: FluidXP+ from articmod.com ($34 / 32fl.oz.), it's made for liquid cooling systems but it claims to be as close to 0% conductivity as possible (.000000000131% the conductivity of copper, which is used to test conductivity). Also they submerged a motherboard in it for 6 hours and it ran fine during and after.
Problems (I think) I've solved:
HDDs and DVD drives: I'll keep these out in a rack or something.BIOS battery: Shouldn't cause problems because if there's no conductivity there's no corrosiveness right?Fans: I'll just not plug them in so i can still have the heatsink, well, sink heat.PSU: I'll just leave it out, mostly because i don't wanna pry it open to disable the fan.USB, etc. ports: A couple hubs with long cords should do the trick.
Problems I haven't solved:
Filtering the NCF: Will it be a problem in a sealed container? (I know aquariums have breather holes but that's what duct tape is for) If so would a standard fish bowl filter system be supplemental, detrimental, or useless?Keeping NCF cool: I'm sure my setup wont be outputting a lot of heat since I'm not planning on overclocking or anything, but I'd rather not have a bowl of boiling NCF (probably wont actually boil but you get what I mean) and especially not a risk of melting the aquarium.Making NCF/Cheaper NCFs: $34 is quite a bit for what is essentially 2 vending machine bottles of Dr. Pepper. I know it's a weird thing to buy which means it's not cheap, and it's probably worth the premium for the longevity of the system, but if anyone knows where to get a good NCF for less or how to make a reliable NCF that would be awesome. And many more I'm sure.
Again, all input is appreciated!
Good luck, I'd like to see where this goes.
thanks, i go home within a month i hope and im first gonna toss an old motherboard i dont care about in there first just to make sure and ill be sure to upload pics and such
Yeah, I can't help with anything but bump for the thread. I'm no hardware guy. But that sounds awesome. I want to see it when it gets done.

I would actually like to see him combine the two ideas fully. If he generates enough heat from the motherboard then he could put some fish in the tank before he goes to work and by the time he gets home they would be perfectly cooked for his dinner. He could use CPU overclocking to adjust the heat, and therefore the cooking time.

I have this in mind and i will be making one but not now, maybe after 6 months or so. i will be opening my shop and i wish to keep one such pc fully submerged in liquid with rgb lights. The main goal here is to attract customers...! (so it would be a basic configuration)
i have some thoughts & ideas about it, will share it here in a day or two..
I am a computer science student, so I need to spend a lot of time in front of my computer. It is not a secret that my computer most of the time is my tv, and newspaper and mp3 player and so on. What I am trying to say is that I use my computer a lot and I think my eyes are very tired of that. I have dark circles under my eyes for a couple of years now and I can't get rid of them. No under-eye cream treatments work, drinking vitamins doesn't help either. Basically, the fact why I am unable to have a deep conversation with long eye contact with anyone is because all od the time I think how horrible my under-eye's look like.
So, here is the point where I would like to ask you for some information. I guess, most of the people from this forum use their computer a lot, which is perfectly fine. I would like to ask you, do you have any strict rules when using your computer? How do you make sure that you are able to, for example, write code for a long time, and make sure that your eyes are not being tortured? Maybe you have specific routine of exercises that you do every x minutes when using computer? Please, do share that information in this thread.
You can start by not using the computer for everything. Read a real newspaper, listen to songs on your phone or mp3 player and watch a real tv. Games like ingress offer you an incentive to leave the house and take in the fresh air. You should only use your computer for coding and other study/work related stuff.

I would love to watch all movies in cinema, read real newspapers and so on, but since I am a student, money is an issue for me, so I am kind of doomed to use my computer not only for work, but for media purposes too.
Thank you for mentioning ingress, I had no idea that games like these exist. Since I am not a big fan of computer games, maybe this one I will like
Take a dog (probably not because you are an student) or something else that will force you to stand up and walk

Nope.
I have rules for my PC, but they aren't the ones you're referring too
Rule #1 keep your greasy mitts offa my tech.
Thank you
The management.

I am not entirely device independant. I can't think straight when I don't get the scores from the football matches! I also listen to music on my phone. And also other stuff like g+, chatting, etc. I use my computer just for playing Fifa 13

I think reading stuff on a screen is probably the worst idea. That's why I hate Ebooks. Also you could have better lighting environments. Draw those curtains and let some natural light in.

Well yeah we all have the dependance...some features of smart devices pull us closer...and that's fine.
It's just the growing numbers of anti-human contact types that have replaced existence in realtime with a cyber existence.

Agreed...
I have a large bound book collection.
For me there is no greater pleasure than flipping pages in my favorites.
Scrolling on line is fine in a pinch...what happens when we can no longer connect?
Your eyes are muscles. focus on something far away every 5-10 minutes

i use comp regularly... according my rule of min 3 hrs a day max 8 hrs. then watch tv for almost 3 hrs+.. all i got a bit darkness under eye and increased sensitivity to sun light. i cannot keep my eyes wide open in strong sunlight like other people i know can do...just get a properly sleep after using comp you wont have much problem
I use the computer an awful lot. (Photoshop as a job tends to require such.) I also watch most of my films on it. Reading I do from a book, my tablet or my phone. (I prefer a book, but as I read in English and live in Holland... Buying one from a shop takes about a month.) I also game. A lot.
Some background info: Dark circles under the eyes are a gathering of moisture and vat, usually caused by sleep deprivation, smoking, too many energy drinks, stress, vitamin shortage and/or allergic reactions.
Some general tips:
Sleep. That thing you're supossed to do for 6-8 hours a day. No, seriously. Try it.
Every 15-20 minutes, squeeze your eyes closed until you can feel the stress behind them fade.
Get up and do something else for a minute every once in a while. Get a cup of tea, visit the loo, grab a bite, have a smoke, doesn't matter.
Make sure the screen brightness isn't set too high. A full bright white screen can severely exhause your eyes. (and cause migraines.)
Make sure you get enough vitamin K, B6, B12, vitamin C and Iron.
Cold water/ice. All those expensive creams and all, nah. Pack some ice in a towel and put it on your (closed) eyes for about 5 minutes. Don't do this too often or too long, but it works well enough as a refresher.
Alternatively, black tea's teabag. Some old wive's remedy; just make a cuppa and put the bags on the skin below your eyes (ovbiously don't burn yourself...but they do have to be hot) You will look like a bit of a dork doing this.
