So I am transforming my Nook color into a point of sale system and need USB Host support for serial access (for various peripherals) as well as USB HID access. I managed to get USB host to work on CM 7 ... Keyboard, mouse and my HID credit card reader work but it seems like I can't charge the nook at the same time. Eg draining power while being USB host work great... . I tried creating a Micro to Mini USB adapter that connects the nookcolor to a powered 5v 2A USB hub with attached Point of Sale devices ( card reader, wieless modules, microcontollers/arduino etc... but for whatever reason even with a powered hub I am unable to maintain the nook's charge while the Nook color is in USB Host / External VBus mode... Any suggestions? Does CM9 with Android ICS solve this issue?
Tonight I tried to send 5v directly to the board to see if I can power/charge the nook with no battery and to charge the Nook via a +5VDC so I can free up USB host mode to be able to access any device/peripheral on the powered USB Hub... This should work but I am a bit worried about how reliable USB host support is for Nookcolor
I don't know of any way to fully maintain the Nook charge through USB while its operating. The standard USB micro plug cannot supply enough current even when connected to a USB charger 5v. That's why the B&N adapter has a special plug on it, to supply additional current.
There was a post about adding inductive charging to the nook. Perhaps you could that info to make a separate power input?

I've seen mag strip readers that work from the headphone jack of android phones. I don't know that they would work with the nook though. If you can live without the keyboard and mouse.
Also, you may want to be careful with Vbus on and powered hubs. You might cook your nook.

Something like those is what i'm talking about.
I just read this post about a nook install in a Jeep
They had this micro usb plug that has a board with solder points.

Perhaps you could use something like that and a few micro usb female cables or adapters to make some kind of a splitter.

Or this Cable? (+AC Adapter)

Or does this produce doubble Powerinput?
noone knows?
Actually I don't see your point (or perhaps I mis-interpret ur question). If you charge with the pc off you just connect the usb in an ac to usb adapter that u plug in into the power current in the wall. If you sync, u connect the cable to ur computer.
The pic on top u can use to listen throug ur earphones and charge or sync at the same time.
The one at the bottom u won't need.
It looks like the first one is sync and a headset.
And the second cable I think is fore a external HDD or DVD player fore some extra power.

I want to charge the diamond, if the pc is off. without switches the cables to AC... (ie with the cradle)
Then just use the usb-cable that came with the diamond. However, check if your pc keeps giving 5V when your pc is turned off. Not all mainboards can do that.
Anybody considered using self-powered USB hub??
works fine for me...
Besides a usb a to micro b adapter what else is needed to use a usb keyboard & mouse with the NC? I am running Cyanogen nightly build. Do you need a specific keyboard/mouse, or a powered hub?
I've used both a standard USB keyboard and mouse separately using just a microUSB mail to USB female adapter. You'll probably need a hub if you want to use both together, I'm not sure if you'd need a powered one or not.
I purchased an adapter and tried a usb keyboard and it didn't work. Turned off the NC keyboard in languages & keyboard and still no luck.
Do you have a link to the adapter? I used one like this... http://www.amazon.com/USB-Micro-Fem...TRUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318945342&sr=8-1
and a standard HP usb keyboard I had laying around as well as a Dell usb mouse. It's been a while, but I think it just worked without having to do anything else. You may try using Null Keyboard from the Market.
Also, I believe I did first enable USB Host mode with either the Nook Tweaks or Nook Odds and Ends app (can find Nook Tweaks in the Market, or the Odds and Ends app here on xda)
Here is the one I bought.

Ok got it working now I forgot to go into Nook Tweaks and set the USB setting to Host Mode
I am running a Microsoft 800 Wireless keyboard and mouse on it at the moment. Works great. Tried to read a 4gb thumb drive but it wouldn't recognize it unless I used it through a powered hub.
If a keyboard works has any one tried a game controller.
The USB OTG Cable posted above works well. I've successfully connected a mouse, keyboard in CM 7.2 and those and game controller in CM 9.

Has anyone had any luck getting a USB dvice to work in CM10?
Have you checked out the CM10 Alpha 1 forum?
Might be something there.
I just bought a keyboard/case usb with a wireless mouse off of ebay and a 4 port hub and using nook tweeks can run them both without external power. I bought the case for a 10" screen display and it lets me mount my nook with the otter box on. http://www.ebay.com/itm/350627696740?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649
I have purchased several otg cables and can get no love out of my hptp. All the cables work on my sgs3. They are all the y type and I am using a 12000 ma portable charger as a power source. I have the jcsullins cm10 installed but have never been able to g4et it to work even on cm9. Is there anything I need to do to get it to work? It works out of the box on my galaxy s3 and also on my evo 4g. So I am assuming that there is nothing wrong with my cable. But when I try to mount with otg helper or stick mount they both say no device present.
I can be reached at cavgtdad on google or skype or whatever. Thanks in advance for help. This is driving me crazy.

New deveolpment
For the first time I decided to try a usb hard drive. It actually mounts the hard drive, but will not mount flash drives. Now I am really confused.
start stickmount before you plug in anyhthing or hptp thinks it s gonna charge.
post here what sequence you use
As spunker said, this post should help you:

Have a look at the dmesg output, you may need the fix for the insuficient power (it depends on how the devices identify itself, some flash disks ask for more 'power' than external HDD)
Search for the: "OTG - USB 'insufficient available bus' tool/thingy" in rootzwiki to get to the tool.

You need your own power source for this so any USB charger should work, I'd recommend anything that can supply 0.5A or higher. Any modern USB charger regulates its voltage so as long as you don't go over its max current you don't have to worry. So if you want to use the Touchpad's 5V 2A charger that will work fine.
thanks. this way dont work for me !! why?

Is that a non-powered hub, hence the reason you are using the Touchpad's charger. With non-powered hubs the charger/power supply needs to be on the input side of the hub, where you have the arrow pointing. Do you have an actual OTG cable as they use a slightly modified pinout versus a regular microUSB cable. If you've ensured everything above then try downloading USB Device Info from Google Play. Any connected devices will show up in the Linux tab, it will show the OTG cable as a connected device, so you can test you config using this app. I use it myself and highly recommend it for troubleshooting.
Something like this would work if you plugged the Touchpad charger into the female microUSB port, plug the male microUSB port into the Touchpad and plug your hub into the full size USB port.
thanks. in my country i cant access to play.google.com. how to download USB Device Info software?

I have the following setup:
- a Samsung Note II N7100, model SGH-i317M
- a HDTV Adapter MHL and OTG Card Reader (which came in a green box)
- a mini USB hub or splitter ( the peanut)
- a USB wired keyboard via a blue USB extension cord (about 2 meters long)
- a Apple wired mouse (in white)
- a Verbatim USB 2.0 thumb drive (32 GB), White and Green
- a 5.0V charger providing 2.0A of current to the HDTV adapter. (the charger is not shown in the photo)
I have a HTML cable connected to a 24-inch TV. The HTML connection works flawlessly. Sounds and audio are all fine on the TV. The MHL connection works great.
The Samsung Note II appeared to be charged by the Adapter (albeit rather slowly).
The problem is with the OTG USB connections. I believe the USB devices are receiving power. The mouse has a red beam of light underneath it. However, the mouse and keyboard are non-responsive for at least half an hour when i first connect to them. The cap-lock LED light on the keyboard would not come on when i pressed it. The mouse is totally non-responsive even though there is a red beam of light underneath it. The Samsung device does not recogize any of the USB devices: mouse, keyboard or thumb drive; well at least not initially.
But after about 30 to 45 mins of plugging all the mouse and keyboard to the setup, however, everything starts to work. Suddenly "Mouse connected" "Keyboard connected" appear on the Samsung notification. The USB thumb drive is also recogized too!! Mouse and keyboard all worked!!
I am so confused. Why do I need to wait for so long for things to work.
Maybe I missed something? What should I do? thanks.
I tried skipping the USB splitter/hub and instead plug the mouse or keyboard directly to the adaptor. It's the same. Has to wait about 30 to 45 minutes.
I also tried changing the USB Charger from 2.0 A to 1.5A. It's the same. No change in behaviour.
Maybe the sequence of which I plug the devices is important?
Please help. Thanks.
hello!
OTG trying to connect first and then MHL or change charger
Hey there.
I was trying to use a similar connection for a S4 with a broken and inactive screen. The HDMI and the USB mouse didn't work simultaneously all the time unless I connected it in a certain order (which I can't remember now). separately each worked great. In addition the charging was slower than discharge. My thought was that the charger had not supply enough power to charge up the device and supply enough power for HDMI and USB connections.
Did you find a workaround?
I would like to connect USB device like keybord and mouse to 5X and with Chromecast use it like "energency laptop" but I need to charge it in the same time. Is it possible?
I tried conventional USB2.0 hub with usb-c to usb-a female adpater and it didnt work. Only one way keybord and mouse or charging.
I tried to buy usb-c small hub like this

there is picture for usb-A socket and micro usb for charging but 5X can use it only one or other way not both way together.
Any hints for me? Thanks.
it's possible, i've made the same thing to use a cheap win tablet with broken screen to use it as a pc. Now i don't remember the order to plug cable and adaptartos. When i come back to home i will send a photo
But there is another problem in Nexus 5X, there are five optins like(I dont know exactly how it is in English)
Only charging
Charging another device
PTP(picture transfer)
MTP(media transfer)
MIDI
I think that I need combination of first and second and I do not know why....5X behave depending on what you select, if you select charging it do not connect USB device and if you select charging other device then 5X did not see the standard wall charger and works only USB device like keybord, etc.
Nobody? Any hints or comments?
im pretty sure this is a you can have your cake but cant eat it too. seems everyone would love to use USB OTG adapter and charge simulateously but its not possible on most devices.
I've been looking for the same, how can I connect a drive and/or Ethernet adapter and provide power as well?
There's some apparent bad news from Plugable on their 3-port USB hub with power pass-through:
The HUB3P will work with any USB-C host as a standard 3-port hub even if charging pass-through is not supported. As an example the hub works with the Google Nexus 5X Android phone for connecting multiple USB devices at the same time. We used the HUB3P in combination with a flash drive for data storage/transfer and our USB3-E1000 for Ethernet access. Please note if a charger is connected to the hub, the hub will not communicate with the phone for data transfer. This is because the phone can only charge or transfer data, it cannot support simultaneous charge and sync.

(Emphasis mine)
As an upside, they do talk about and illustrate a "new mode" in the USB menu. "Power supply: Charge the other connected device" No idea if that works if it's a non-C device, like a flash drive, SSD, or Ethernet adapter.
