I had an HTC LEGEND which I rooted and used Blayo’s rom on, and then
later a stripped down version of it. I loved it, made my phone faster everything worked great and it updated me to 2.2
Now I’ve got a new phone the Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant and I’ve heard that the modding community has done some fantastic work for this piece of hardware. I’ve been creeping on the forum for the last couple of days and noticed a few things.
First it seems like a bit more work to flash the phones, and second that there’s a lot more options with things like kernals and such. Despite reading through pages of intellectual jargon I’m still feeling a little overwhelmed in what choices to make. Perhaps if I listed the features I was looking for someone could point me in the right direction?
I can follow the directions that forum members have posted easily enough I just can’t decide what is right for me when it comes to flashing the phone.
Here’s what I’m looking for:
I like the stock rom look and enjoy the layout of the phone, contacts, apps and messaging home row.
I would really like to have better battery life as I feel the phone really doesn’t last long.
I hear that there may be some better GPS tweaks? I use the GPS lots when I’m out of cell range with pre-loaded backroad maps. It’s REALLY important to me that this works as it could get me home at night or leave me stranded in the dark during hunting season if it doesn’t work.
I’d like to get rid of all the bell and Samsung bloatware. I didn’t really seem to care for any of the stuff they had pre-loaded.
I’d like to keep the voice dialer, calendar for sure along with the
contact manger – it’s sweet.
I don’t really like the pre-loaded internet app been using Dolphin mini and loving it.
I would like it to be as stable as possible I don’t want to be having to tinker
with it all the time.
Based on these prerequisites and that knowledge that my phone is:
Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell i9000m
Any suggestions?

Yes. I'd suggest checking out the Vibrant forums .
You've got the right forum! The Canadian "Vibrants" are not the same as the "Vibrants" from the US. What is the manufacture date of your phone? It should be located behind the battery. I had a galaxy s from Aug (from Bell) and I found the GPS really bad. It improved with the updates but would still put me on wrong roads, etc. However, I now have a phone made in Dec. 2010 and it seems like the GPS is much better than before (without any tweaks or anything). It actually works with google navigation now! I would recommend you test out the GPS thoroughly (without assistance from towers) before going on any big trips. I went on a 9 hour drive with my old SGS' GPS and it was terrible.
oops, forgot to mention that seeARM has a rom based off of stock Bell JL2 ROM. If you are worried about the possible internal SD issue that was happening a month or so ago, this seems like a safe bet. It does seem like the issues have been solved though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906977
It says that the stock launcher is included so you can keep the touchwiz, contact manager, etc. I think there's still some bell bloatware on but I believe you can remove them through programs like titanium backup.

Hes got the right Forums buddy This is the Canadian version of the Vibrant not the T-mobile one
I have several smart phones and I have been able to root and flash roms now so far it seems like working on the tab is not as easy.... Is this true? im afraid of bricking it.... But is it worth rooting it?
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
from what I can gather on these boards thus far is that we went with the wrong carrier (sprint) for the tab, since tmobile seems to have more development going for it, AND at this point I am not seeing much advantage to rooting anyways. Let me know if you digested the boards differently as this is the only thing that is stopping me from rooting as well
well its because sprint is cdma and tmobile is gms which is found everywhere in the world... i am still within 30 days so i could return it, and I am thinking about switching to tmo anyway maybe going with the streak 7 as it has the tegra 2 processor
Thanks for replying buddy.
Hey guys, this might help you. Did a quick video on it and tested it myself on a Sprint tab, worked fine

Those How To's are AWESOME! Thanks! NO ONE has broken it down for we (the sad and lonely) CDMA SGT owners...
The question remains, however: Is it worth it?
So far, my answer is hell to thuh naw... With so many reports of brickage, and so little dev work being done, keeping the CDMA SGT stock seems to be the only way to go. I received my Tab for Christmas from a gorgeous santa (who also recently gave me another gift, my daughter (haven't rooted that device yet, either)) against my suggestions to wait (to get me a Tab, not to have my daughter). A few short months later, here we are:
XOOM dominates, SGT 2 and 10.1 (along with TONS of other Tabs) are announced and with Samsung's reputation for damn near NEVER updating their device's OS' (KIES SUCKS!), I'm thinking the SGT will never see the light of Honeycomb, which really is the only worthwhile upgrade for the device. As other tabs gain popularity, the dev work for the SGT decreases, with more and more messages like "This is the last update to this ROM, as I just got a XOOM".
So here I sit, with an oversized phone that can't make calls, watching Tron Legacy over and over while flashin' anything and everything on my EVO, longing for a XOOM...
That being said, anyone HATE the XOOM, and wanna' trade for an SGT? The SGT RULES!

thanks for the links, this makes a lot of sense to me, its just like flash an android phone. Thanks a bunch
so general question, when doing the custom recovery on the sprint tab, if samsung/sprint releases the upgrade to 2.4 / 3.0 (god willing), will that upgrade have any impact on the custom recovery, or are the mutually exclusive?
So far, this has been a bust for me since I've been completely incapable of syncing with Kies. I've searched and tried every possible solution I could find to no avail.

Also your guide says to install CWM for your tab version but I didnt find one for sprint, there are version for Verizon, ATT and TMO thats it.
I just dont want to end up with a brick
Thanks for your help

can we use roms from other models if we find a way to not flash the wrong modem as part of the process?
+ 1 for working roms for sprint?
Help wanted!
Ice cream/beer money on me!!
+2 i want a sprint tab rom to use it on cricket and enable the phone portion.
It's the phone portion I need to figure out.
I rooted but not sure why no real reason to on a sprint tab to root cant find any wireless tether apps that will work
i rooted to get rid of some sprint crap bloatware
On the Sprint SGT you need to use New PC Studio instead of Kies. Follow the instruction exactly, but replace with NPC. Worked like a charm!
Pardon me for coming late to the party. Have been trying to root my Sprint (CDMA) tab for months. All fail for one reason or another (Z4Root doesn't work, Kies doesn't work on my Win 7 PC, SuperOneClick comes up as a virus and requires the use of Kies, PCStudio can be downloaded from a site that Firefox says is untrustworthy). I've spent endless hours reading msg boards and how-tos. i'm a resonably savy computer user. Is there a set of intnructions to root a Sprint-branded Tab anywhere???

This isnt the DEV Forum... It is Q&A. Retard.
Hello, I'v done something stupid...
I was looking around at all the roms for my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tablet and found one I wanted to use thinking it was a CDMA one... but infact it was a GSM.... After the install nothing was working so I looked into it and found my error... I redid it with a CDMA rom and also a using some recovery files that were listed here and the tablet comes on fine but I have no radio now.
Doing some more looking I see one single person say theres no coming back from that because I installed the wrong modem.bin, is this true?
Currently using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967175 so im stock at the moment.
Iv been searching and searching but i'm not coming up with much... but then again I really dont know what terms to enter... Any help would be great! Thanks!

as long as you can go into "Download mode", you can re-flash the official firmware from here. just have a look which one is suitable for your Tab, and in the bottom of the page, you'll find all documentation you need it and also one very good video tutorial...hope it helps!
I have the same problem but with a VZW galaxy tab. Ive flashed several times and I never seem to get the modem up. The link you posted above doen't seem to have anything for he i800 is there one i can use?
Hey everyone,
I'm going to be a brand new Galaxy note Owner soon, out of box fresh stock from ATT...
I've "flashed" roms i guess before on several Android devices... i'm still not 100% in tune with all the LINGO everyone uses these days.. and I gotta say it's become more and more confusing as days go by.. so it's hard to determine and understand "whats out there" available...
Anywho.. to the reason for my post,
I'm pretty sure i'm NOT going to be happy with the stock experience provided by samsung and also all the BLOATWARE...
What's the best rom out there for me to get that would be the closest to stock Ice Cream sandwich? the fastest and smoothest, and also has the easiest process to Root and Rom into?
Any help anyone can provide would be MUCH Appreciated. =)
Thanks.
If it is fresh from ATT it probably isn't an international model. So you need to go to the Galaxy Note ATT version forum on XDA.
It takes time and research to safely jump into the root/flash pool. I've been doing it for a couple of years and still i'm confused by a lot of the lingo these rom developers use, but they are mostly pretty good about explaining the rom, and safe practices in the posts so you will pick up on it.
You should probably ask this question in the AT&T note section. The international note has a different chip set so as far as i understand the roms won't be interchangable. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1513
Some roms are on multiple devices so i can recommend some of the big ones. CM9 is my favorite, its coming along nicely and has a good amount of customization. Kang is also pretty good and has more customization than Cm9. those are probably the two biggest roms that are close to ICS AOSP (which i'm assuming you mean by stock rather than touchwiz stock). I havent received my note (N7000) yet so i havent been able to try these out, but i hear ya lose your SPen integration on these roms. I ran CM9 on the Galaxy Nexus from day one.
Hope i helped
Wow, my head is about to explode after the last hour reading different threads on here. I have some experience rooting and using Odin if needed but not sure where to begin. All I want is a less bloated rom of lollipop and runs real smooth. The stock has way too much junk I don't want. Unfortunately I got excited for a min when I saw the dark note 5 rom port but I guess that's not for at&t version because of the locked bootloader. So I looked at a few roms on here and some seem decent enough but not sure which ones I want. Like I said, I want closest thing to stock Android as possible but with the Samsung s pen features also. Also it seems to me I have to downgrade to NC2 and then do the recovery and install the roms from there?
Alot of work coming from a guy who is used to nexus and oneplus one type phones. ..

Yeah, it is a bit more complicated getting things done with this device than some others, unfortunately it seems that is the way a lot of device mfg's are headed.
Once you get the method down it isn't all that difficult to get a ROM installed.
There are 2 ROMS that work really well for me
I'm currently running, and have been for a few weeks now is a S6 Edge port from Carl1961 located HERE
The other is a Darkloard Note 4 port from sanguinevn located HERE
Not that the other few we have aren't good, it's just that these 2 give me best battery/functionality combo
Carl had just reminded me that we are currently faced with a problem that 5.1 and up is a problem for us since we have no bootloader, so we're a bit stuck on how far our fine dev's can take us.

Thanks for the reply. How do I root the 5.0 update? Is there a walk thru guide anywhere? I can't find one.
Also is there a big performance difference between this and stock? I disabled some of the stock apps but in still curious about the s6 rom you talked about
