**NOTE FOR VEGAN TAB USERS** Steps 1-5 are no longer necessary for you, as the build.prop file in your /system directory has a working market fingerprint out of the box. Just apply the standard Market Fix (steps 6-8) and you are good to go.
I've seen several people complaining that the "full market" we had on G Tablet after the established market fixes wasn't quite full. Well, I've solved that problem, through a mixture of reading what others have done with other devices and experimentation. I will not promise that this gives you *everything*, but I do believe it gives you apps that otherwise required the release-keys status. Some of the apps you get may of course not work. But several applications I looked for before (TV.com for example, with streaming CBS video content) were not available with the previous market fix, and are now available with this fix. In fact, TV.com even works, except for a very minor video glitch in the upper left corner of the screen, and it's a cool app to get some quick streaming video content going on your G Tablet.
**NOTE** I take no responsibility for you screwing up your G Tablet. Please backup your system in Clockwork Recovery before doing any of this!
**EDIT** Removed unneccessary steps after feedback in this thread. Process is now very simple. Edited step 1 to clarify you need paid version of Root Explorer.
Here's how to do it:
0) Backup in Clockwork Mod. Please. I don't want you mad at me if this messes up your ROM.
1) Get the paid version of Root Explorer installed on your G Tablet. Apparently the free version lacks a text editor. If you only have the free version, the text editing step will need to be done in a separate program, or you will need to copy build.prop to your desktop, edit it there, and copy it back. Or use adb to push an edited build.prop to your tablet. Just buy Root Explorer though, it makes this very easy.
2) Browse in Root Explorer to /system. Then click on Mount R/W.
3) Long click on build.prop and click on Open In Text Editor.
4) Scroll down to the line ro.build.fingerprint=....
You are going to replace that with the following text:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF91/43546:user/release-keys
5) Now you are going to click on Save and Exit. And then remount the /system directory as R/O.
6) Now you are going to re-do the original Market Fix. I used the simple version illustrated here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=related First, make sure Market is running, and browse around in it for a few seconds. If you don't do this, there may be no cache to clear and for some reason the market fix may not work. Then, go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Running and scroll down to Market. Then hit Clear Cache, followed by Force Stop **DO NOT CLEAR DATA FOR MARKET, JUST CACHE**. Then go back, scroll down to Google Services Framework, hit Clear Data, then Force Stop.
7) Now try starting Market again and you get the famous Market Error. Now shut down the G Tablet, then turned it back on. Wait for Wifi to connect to your network before doing anything! I forgot to do that on the first try, so I rebooted again, waited for wifi to connect this time.
8) Now restart Market again. It seems to have sourced the fingerprint from build.prop somewhere in steps 6-7. Searches for previously missing apps now show up. Voila! A truly full market!
And steps 6 and 7 can almost certainly be replaced by the equivalent steps using Titanium Backup that I know a lot of people have been using, particularly with TNT Lite. I am running ZPad 2.2 here, so YMMV with TNT Lite. Please keep me informed if this works/doesn't work for you if you try it!
Credit goes to: Paul at Modaco for hacking on the Advent Vega and making the Market work fully on that device and for coming up with a working build.prop for the Advent Vega, Roebeet for inspiring me to look at the Vega ROM stuff with his current work on the VEGAn ROM, Rothnic for his excellent work on the ZPad ROM that I'm currently using. Basically, I'm just hacking and slashing here, this wasn't any sort of rocket science.
Paul from Modaco is awesome -- and you are as well, for making this post!
Any apps in particular that you found after this, that were missing before? I might want to try this on my device. Thanks again!
FWIW my Nexus One running a CM 6.0 nightly from 2 days ago has
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2.1/FRG83/60505:user/release-keys
Note the more up-level version (2.2.1) and build (FRG83). I haven't tried this on my GTab yet but I will as soon as I can get it up and running.

The only specific things I can tell you off the top of my head are TV.com which I know wasn't there because I searched for it a few hours ago. Also, I tried searching Market for Handcent before and found 14 or 15 results, and after this process I was able to retrieve 24 results.
There were a bunch of random apps I saw in the Top Apps list that I don't remember seeing earlier today. So that was enough to convince me that most of the missing 10-20% of apps are there now.
And thanks for the compliment, especially coming from the guy who made the G Tablet useful!

I'm sure that will work too, though the FRF91 build string seems to match the existing data in the ZPad ROM at least. I'm guessing the two signatures will produce essentially identical Market results.

Yeah. I may be somewhat overoptimistic going with FRG83. The build and version numbers identify the version of the system code so apps may read them and make some assumptions as to certain API characteristics. We're probably closer to FRF91 than FRG83 on TnT Lite.
This one worked ok for me

Yes this is Galaxy Tab. Probably better a Tegra tab once a full market one comes out.
I did the following:
1) Edited build.prop as described in step 4, rebooted and searched for tv.com - no results
2) I preformed the edits in step 4a, rebooted and searched for tv.com - no results
3) I stopped Market & Google Services Framework & wiped Google Services Framework, rebooted after getting Market Error, waited for wifi and opened Market to search for tv.com - no results.
I can't say if it works. I haven't had trouble finding apps, but I can't find tv.com before or after the steps above. Perhaps, I missed something.
Wait!!!! It does work. I tried again after posting and it's there! Thanks!
Is it possible to post the TV.com app? I don't want to do the mod but would love that app!
Great post man worked like a charm, I can get my slingbox app from the market now.
Edit: dammit I can't get the downloaded sling client to launch even after trying it many times which usually worked.
I'm going to give it a shot but being a newbie I'm not clear on this step:
5) Now you are going to click on Save and Exit. And then remount the /system directory as R/O
Will "remount as r/o" be an option to select at this point? If not, can you provide more detail.
The rest of the mod is easy enough to follow.
Thanks.

I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks
Ran into the same problem last night

Tried that solution and it doesnt work when trying to download books. I always get file type not supported. You?
yes, it does work when downloading books. make sure you follow it exactly.
you have to set the EXTERNAL_STORAGE value to /sdcard like it says and NOT /mnt/sdcard

I did change that but I didnt notice that I had to type out adb shell before typing su for the apk. I get permission denied, does that mean I missed something while rooting my nook?
Edit:
NM adb shell works, just didnt work from terminal emulator. Anyways tried everything from adb and a computer and still no dice. I have no clue why this is not working. The books in my files dont have the cover and when I click on it it looks like it will load then just goes back to my files again.
NM, it seems that the books that were already in my library from when I had the regular nook OS was giving me issues. I went to shop for a new free book to see what happened and it downloaded and worked. So I did it right from the beginning but kept trying the same 2 stupid books. lol Thanks
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I tried following through with the directions posted in the link. But my adb shell seems to be repeating whatever I type after I press enter. It doesn't seem to be working.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I'm using phiremod.
Okay, so I found something... I think.
I did export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
and I got
export: /sdcard: bad variable name
Any suggestions?
WORKING Nook ereader app on Nook Color running CM7 from sd card
I wanted to be able to have access to 2 barnes and noble libraries on the same device. I looked around and this is what I came up with. You don't need to do any really tricky or invasive mods and it works great. I'm mostly a moron so I wrote this for people who are like me, please don't be offended if you have to say "well duh" alot.
I would read the notes at the bottom of the post after you read this.
1. I prepared a CM7 sd card with google apps!!! using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
***(I used the stable CM-7.1.0-RC-1-encore-signed version + current gapps, but it should work with any current CM7 nightly)
2. I powered down my nook completely, inserted the CM7 sd card, powered it back up, and let the CM7 installer routine run. The installer shuts the nook off when complete, then I rebooted into CM7. After registering to my google acct and getting to the home screen, I clicked on the icon in the bottom left corner (3 little horizontal lines) and selected Settings>Applications>Unknown sources...check that box.
3. Opened the Market app. Searched for "appinstaller" and installed AppInstaller by FunTrigger. Then I completely powered down my nook and removed the CM7 sd card.
4. Then I downloaded an older version of the Nook ereader app (ver 2.5) and put it somewhere in my filesystem that was easy to locate (you will be locating it from linux) from here:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/nook
5. Then on a PC running Linux (ubuntu 11), I plugged the sd card I put CM7 on into my computer. In linux you can see all the partitions...in windows all you can see is boot. I opened the "CM7 SD CARD" partition, and I put the nook.apk file I downloaded from freewarelovers right in there.
6. I reinserted the CM7 sd card into my nook and booted it back up. I went to applications, ran AppInstaller and clicked on the "nook.apk" icon and installed it. Registered my B&N account normally and populated my library.
Notes:
* DO NOT add the nook.apk into the native OS. This is only for CM7. If you try to add this app to an OS with the native nook reader working (unrooted/nootered) the device gets stuck in a boot loop which you will have to use CWM or 8 fail boots to recover from.
* I bear no responsibility for any damage you may do to your device by using this method. That said, it is almost impossible to brick a nook color, especially using a sideload OS. If you think you did just look around the forums, there is lots of information on how to unbrick a nook color.
* If you do not have Linux running on anything to read the CM7 partitions, you can google "reading ext4 filesystems in Windows" and figure out how to do that. Mac is Unix based, so maybe you could use a mac and just hope no one finds out. I highly suggest you just make a live CD by following the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
* Incidentally, you can use this method for sideloading any apps into your sd-based CM7 environment.
Why would you need to sideload the Nook app? Is it hiding in the market these days??
No it's there but you can't download it. Either says invalid device or it won't give you the option to install at all.
EDIT: I updated to a current nightly and it allowed me to download the ver 2.6 Nook reader, but the sign in screen is garbled and it won't communicate with the B&N servers. Had a similar issue with Netflix, which I also sideloaded an older version of and works well.
@ mastigia.
Firstly, very appreciate your effort and post instructions for others.
Secondly, why would you want to go with that route?
At least, there are 2 options installing Nook App with ease.
a. Download and install directly from Market. (see note 1)
b. If for sideloading, just use usb cable to tranfer the .apk over, no need to remove the uSD then insert into Linux just to copy the file.
Note 1: If you can't see Nook App on the Market, then fix your Market first.
Note 2: another option (would be 3rd) is using ADB (either over USB or wireless to push file over)
why oh why

Ok...
a. I CAN see the app on the market. The app currently available is ver 2.7 which from the previous build of CM7 I was using had "Incompatible Device" where the "Install" button would normally be. So, I updated to CM7 nightly 209 thinking I was an idiot. And hey, whaddya know, that made it possible for me to install the 2.7 reader from the market. But it was garbled and would not communicate with the B&N servers and caused me some really crappy synching issues later which I won't go into here.
b. This is just for getting the nook.apk onto CM7 loaded on an sd card. The prob with just moving the file over usb is that windows (which I started off using) will only pick up my native emmc because the sd card partition I want to move the .apk to is in an ext4 partition. Using adb wireless I was unable to find the mount point, once again probably for the same reason.
So, to clean that up I would say just plug your nook into linux and move the file over usb and that would probably work and thanks for the suggestion, I just did not think of that.
Ya know this is kind of a silly and unique issue. I got my gf a nook color, she wants her own library and an unrooted nook (warranty). She also wants access to MY library (which has alot of books she would like to read) and apps like netflix (which also requires a legacy version). Books are the primary reason we got nooks. So for someone like ME, thats the post I would need.
Anybody having force close issues with the latest Nook app? I'm running 213 and I can download but anytime I try to open anything I get a force close.
Hi all,
I got one of those $199 Nooks on eBay, for the express purpose of using it as a decent-quality poor man's tablet.
I chose not to root it, and left the stock ROM alone, instead installing Honeycomb onto a microSD using the method described on nookdevs. (Can't post links yet, too new)
I then enabled the Android Market using the method also described on nookdevs.
I did spoof my fingerprint, as if I was using a Nexus S.
I have successfully loaded SOME apps. However, in the Market app, I can't see apps I KNOW exist (TweetDeck, Facebook).
My associated device list is empty (I'm presuming this is because the Nook isn't technically supposed to be able to access the market), so I can't even try and load them from the market's website.
Anyone have any ideas?
Edit to add: I also noticed: I can view my downloaded apps through the market website, but not the market app. The app insists I have "No downloads from Android Market"
Ok. You have to root it. I suggest autonooter. It will not change your rom. It will only install software. So you can run market. Live wallpapers. Etc..... and its really easy. Just pop the sd card. And it does magic
then you can install a custom launcher from the market. I suggest adw launcher or launcherpro
Rooting and installing roms are completely different things
Hope this helps.
Edit. Autonooter will also install a good keyboard. That is much better than the stock
Nook Color via Xda App
My understanding is that since I'm running Android from an SD card, I don't need to root the original hardware, as the Nook gives boot priority to the SD card reader, if an OS is present.
You're saying that's incorrect?
(Just trying to clarify)
I don't understand what your having trouble with but you have no reason to Root your Nook. I'm running Nookie Froyo and Nookie Honey off of 2 sepperate Cards without Rooting and everything works great. Although at this time I reccomend using Nookie Froyo because Honeycomb is not up to fluff yet because it wasn't made from the Honeycomb SDK(Not yet available) but the Preview Image(Think Demonstration or Demo version) Running Froyo instead will probably solve your problems.

You are correct. You can continue to run from your sd and never mess with your emmc. Personally I prefer running off the emmc, if for nothing else performance reasons. Since it is just about impossible to brick these things (because the boot priority is to the sd card), I suggest experimenting. You can always get back to stock.

Update 3/22: Autopatcher is updated for CM10.1 and should be working for all devices. Check our dedicated TabletUI thread maintained by Caldair.
I was about to post this in the CM10 user thread, but figured I would give it it's own thread to make it easy to find.
I have seen a couple people request combined bars and/or tabletUI for the CM10 build. You can get true tabletUI by using my tool the auto-patcher. It is linked in my sig and runs on Linux or OSX terminals and Windows actually has a GUI.
It just outputs a flashable zip that you install directly over the ROM, as well as a restore.zip.
The command in the terminal would look like this (the cm stands for Cyanogen and due to some irregular build.prop entries in the build, it is required:
Code:
./auto_patcher cm-fullofbugsETC.zip tabletUI cm
The attachments from this thread have been taken down as they were for the beta builds. Now that the Nook Color has Official CM10 builds, those zips no longer apply (Thanks to our encore CM10 team!)
If you want tabletUI on a CM10 Official Nightly Build, you have two options that I know of:
You can use my tool the Autopatcher to apply tabletUI to any build, for any rom/device that doesn't come with Tablet as stock.
Works on Linux, OSX and Windows
Windows has a GUI
One command outputs a flashable zip.
works for emmc and sdcard installs.
./auto_patcher CM10-encore.zip voice (for those of you who want to use the command line)
You can use the ParanoidAndroid build (also nightly!) for the Nook Color- All the work and code from the CM10 kernel and device tree are used in these, so all the benefits are there as well.
Allows choice of Tablet, Phablet, Phone or combination thereof.
If someone is regularly making TabletUI zips for the CM10 nightlies and wants to maintain a post in this thread with download links, I can link to it in this space, but you should trust me that it is better just leave it up to individuals. The zips go out of date pretty often, and the Auto-Patcher is easy to use...
Since this is all just a little over my head, I for one thank you for the zip!
Edit- tried this out. Love the tablet UI, but it split my wallpaper into 4 sections, didn't like my apex launcher (app drawer came up narrow and took a long time to load) and overall made my nook run very slow and the screen became very unresponsive. I ran the restore and ran the update again, just to be sure. Same problems.
Maybe it's just my nook. I'm interested to see how others fare.

I am not one to discount user experience, but these are VERY minor edits. VERY, lol.
Not much here that would impact response time or anything of that nature. You can look at the patches here. Go ahead and ignore the framework-res patch, since it isn't applied as lockscreen rotation is already merged into this build.
As far as I know, you should be okay with most launchers, but I haven't tried Apex. I do know that Nova and Trebuchet work fine.
Works like a charm. Thanks man.

Edit: duh... answered my own question.
Thanks! I love the tablet UI!

Thanks mateorod!
So, from all of these kudos, I must be doing something wrong. I install it over CM10 alpha, and Trebuchet gets very ill, can't start, and reports closing continually. I pop into settings/apps and clear Trebuchet's data, and it's stable for just a little while as I set up my homescreen again, then dies continuously again.
I reflash the alpha and gapps (because I wasn't paranoid enough download the restore zip first), download the restore zip, flash alpha, gapps, and update all at once, and I get the same behavior. I wiped both caches each time.
I flash restore, and all is well.
Any ideas?
Tablet UI looks perfect, though!

Hmm...for some reason my subscription to this thread isn't working. I hadn't seen any of the recent comments.
To be honest, I don't know why you are seeing this. Have you been running CM10 for awhile? There is possibly some setting interfering. But I have seen a lot of people use this for a bunch of devices, with almost no problems. Like I said earlier, the actual changes are quite minor. The source code just blocks access to tabletUI at certain settings, and I unblock them. That's it, it is stuff that is already in the code and meant to work.
My recommendation would be to try and install a different launcher and see what happens. If that works, then reinstall Trebuchet from Play or another source and see how that goes.

I restored ADW from my CM9 Titanium backup and it works just fine. I like it a lot better than Trebuchet, in fact, but I was trying to go with the flow. EDIT: The background scrolls, which Trebuchet never managed to do.
As a test, I cleared ADW's default and tried Trebuchet again, and it fails unless I force stop and delete its data. I'll try adding things to the homescreen when I get time, but work and kids push that back on my list.
I really like having the tablet UI back! I do miss the power widget in the notifications, though. Is there a way to add it?
Thanks for this. It was one of only 2 issues I had with the CM10 build (the other is no openGL, so no chrome). Works great, but I can confirm it doesn't play nice with the Apex Launcher app drawer - the icons are zoomed in cutting off the label and side of the icons. It's not big deal for me though, as I rarely use my app drawer, and I can still identify the apps. Just thought I'd report it on this thread as a known issue. No other issues at all.

IDK how tied in to your Launchers you folks are, but this works great with Nova.

Tablet UI update.zip constantly crashing - possible solution

I may have found a solution for your issue of Trebuchet crashing after flashing the tablet UI update.zip file.
I was having the exact same problem as you described it, and it was your post that helped me to fix it on my NC.
This is what I did:
1. Wiped everything
2. Installed CM10 Alpha + GAPPs (I didn't install the tablet UI update.zip yet)
3. REBOOTED-
4 .I bypassed setting up WIFI and my account, and went straight to Settings>Apps> and cleared Trebuchet's data cache.
5. REBOOTED into Recovery, and flashed the tablet UI update.zip file, and cleared caches once more for good measure.
After Android booted, I got a single FC from 'Google', not Trebuchet.
6. Went straight back to >SettingsApps> and cleared Trebuchet's cache one last time, and rebooted one last time.
My Nook is now running the tablet UI, and is stable. It may be that one or two of the steps I took were superfluous, but it working for me now.
You helped, because I was unaware that Trebuchet had a data cache that could be cleared by the user- something you pointed out.
I'd really like to know if this works for you because this is my very first forum post, and it would make my day to know I actually helped.
Thanks to Mateorod for posting the file, and the XDA community for breathing new life into the NookColor.
[ I watched XDA's 'Noob Video', now I need a therapist!]
Just an update on my experience with the tablet ui. Almost everything works well except Hotmail (no headers), and swiftkey (doesn't think I have a tablet). Also can't get the swipe to work to adjust brightness.

Has anyone successfully installed this patch to CM10 Alpha1 running on an SD card?
I have tried and get a boot loop. I even tried cmdralpha's trick about doing a fresh install and clearing Trebuchet's cache before installing the patch. No joy.
I don't think I can run Clockwork Recovery from the same SD card I am booting my ROM from, so this makes updating and restoring a pain.

You cannot use his zip to install the patch to SD using CWM. He has it hard coded to flash to emmc. I will look at it to see if there is something I can do to make it work on SD.
EDIT: So far I have not been successful in getting a zip to work on my SD install. Theoretically you should be able to just rename to update-.zip and put it into your boot partition and boot to the SD recovery. It loads ok, but hangs on boot animation on booting. It could be because have my resolution set to phone gui and using ADW launcher.

Hmmm...interesting. The updater-script that is used is just a cat if the existing one from the ROM. But I will admit, this patcher is a general tool, used by all devices and the Nook is the first I know of to try and use it with a sdcard install. If one of you sdcard folks would pull a logcat, I will look at it.
I can't think of why it would matter, this is the same thing we did with Botbrew, for instance, and sdcard installs worked no problem. Might just be a tabletUI issue, although again, I can't imagine why...
I have the new update and it's running great. Is there any way to just enable the setting to allow sideloaded apps like the amazon app store. Is there any way to only modify that 1 setting? Thanks for any help!

Not manually in stock settings. You need to flash my Extras zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. That puts a few extra apps on, but you can go to settings and remove them if you don't want them.

Anyway you could give a list of what those apps are? Is that all that's in the extras zip? A few apps, and the 3rd party install hack? After flashing that 1 zip, the amazon appstore should work? Thanks again for all the help.

look at the description on that thread for the extras zip. It lists what the apps are. And yes, that is basically what the zip is. Yes the Amazon store should work after flashing that.

Thank you so much! My Nook HD+ is damn near perfect now. I appreciate all the help and super quick responses you have given me over the last couple of days. I really appreciate everything you do on the site to help further development on the Nook HD+.
leapinlar - Thank you.
Thank you again. I've been working with PC's since the DOS days, but I'm not a programmer. My first exposure to ADB was when I rooted the original Nook. ADB drivers and device connectivity takes a bit of trial and error. Your excellent zip file work avoids all this. Your gapps/playstore/extras zip file was just want I needed in order to install applications from external sources on my Nook HD+ running 2.1.0. I can now install apps from the Amazon Appstore and sideload apps from apk files (SiriusXM was the first). Keep up the good work (modest donation made).
I officially feel like my Nook 9 is perfect. I can now use the stock interface, since I can now load all of my widgets and app shortcuts on the home screen without having to go through the extras menu. I now have Amazon Kindle and Music, Google Play, Music, Mail, etc and I still get all of the benefits of the Nook itself.
The only thing is that I feel like the Amazon App store has been killing my battery. Otherwise this was a welcome, unexpected update.

I am in the same boat. All I want to do is be able to side load Flash and my N64 app. What steps did you do to be able to take an unrooted stock 2.1 device and flash to allow side loading non market apps? This is all I want. Nothing else but the ability to side load apps.

Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, make a bootable CWM SD and flash the extras zip. It will allow installation of apps from unknown sources.

Yes this is exactly what I did. Once it was fully installed I uninstalled Zeam Launcher. Now it is stock Nook with the ability to side load apps. Perfect!!

Hello leapinlar,
On your HD/HD+ CWM thread, you say that you don't need to have an SD card to to enable unknown sources, but you can download the Extras zip file to the internal memory and I can install the file that way. Is that correct. I'm hoping so because I don't have an SD card on me right now.
P.S. I'm a newbie to all of this, so I'd really appreciate your help. I don't want to root my NOOK HD+, i just want to allow unknown sources!

disable unknown sources?
I recently flashed my HD+ back to stock (had gotten some sort of malware on there I think) and added the Extras zip. Works perfectly (thanks leapinlar!), but I've got a dumb question – is there a way to go back and disable “unknown sources”? I'd like to be able to turn it on and off when needed within the settings or somewhere for some extra piece of mind security-wise. I occasionally use the amazon app store or sideload something, but not all that often.
Thanks again,

Not without being rooted. If you are rooted you can use SQLite Editor to manually edit the database, but there is no other way. I would not worry about it. I would worry more about root reseting you than the security issue of having unknown sources activated.

I answered in your other post. Please do not post the same question in two different threads. It is confusing.

If I go ahead and do this, would anything need to be altered/removed if I need to return the tablet under warranty?
The tablet is for my Mother who's not at all tech savvy - if it were mine I'd be running a custom ROM on it by now - so I need it to be straight forward just in case there are any issues with the tablet.
