Galaxy Note, stock ICS question. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm posting in general forums because I need to have everyone in on this.
Eventually, when ICS with bloatWiz is released, will we be able to craft a AOSP or AOKP, FULLY functional because of kernel and such? I recall on Galaxy S II, there were loads of issues on other gb roms, than stock with sammy framework. :/
I mean, will we be able to get ICS running, crystal, on this device? Or will we encounter same stuff, such as lower music volumes on headsets and all that good stuff? Damn, I miss ICS from my Nexus Prime.
Anyway, cheers guys.

Really just need the kernel from Sammy. With that, most bugs can be ironed out.
Right now, the kernel is responsible for all the stupid SODs, etc.

Yes, we need a stable rooted ICS kernel for imilka to produce his magic.
But we'll also need the ICS source code IMO, mostly because of the possible driver issues. If Samsung delivers the code as quickly as they did for SGSII (within days of the official ICS release), we're away.

Noob Question Alert: Tablet mode?
Hi,
apologies for the thread hi-jacking.
with the chinese leak available at the moment, does tablet mode work properly? without systemui fc?
also, Out of AOSP, AOKP and ICS Stunner, which has the most refined tablet mode for daily use as a phone?

Moved To Q&A
Its a question so it belongs in the Q&A section. Do not post here just because you think it will get more "exposure" we have rules for a reason!

I'm using Stunner ICS 4.2 in tablet mode (213 DPI) with no problem.
I've been using since day 1 and I'm loving it!!!
Only drawback is the keyboard, that doesn't hide the bottom bar, and makes typing more difficult since I'm not used to not having the keyboard starting at the bottom of the screen.
Other than that it's the perfect interface for the Note's big screen

No, system UI crashes at boot so no clock and most important no notifications. And also Samsung stuffs look very bad...
AOSP and ICS Stunner both work great
Just define 213dpi in build.prop as superfuffo said

Thanks for your replies guys!!

will rooting a phone
rectify some bug or phone problem?
like that of no incall audio on regular phones?
skype to pc calls has audio so i think its more of the call app problem...
will ICS be able to fix that?
or will other roms fix that?

I'd love to help you, but what do you mean? If a phone is supposed to do anything out of the box, it will do it. If it doesn't it's hardware or application conflicts. - A root will not make the phone do something, in itself, the root is to install othere applications and alter system and such. - Your exact problem, I don't understand. :/

I`am real excited about this rom and i think others are too so i can imagine people having questions.
Don`t want to clutter up the dev section so i took the liberty to create this thread so people can exchange and share all kind of CM9 related stuff if you want
Will it have all of the S-pen functionality and the Samsung S- apps? Like S-memo?
Samsung hasn't developed the S pen ability on ICS yet, so it will take a while .
I'm not touching a ROM unless it's official.
Maybe I've grown up, but flashing ****ty buggy ROMs is not for me anymore.

When I flashed CM7 on my nexus one, it was far from ****ty and buggy. I'd call it official in its own way; rather refined, actually, with better performance and many more features than my previous "official" ROM. I don't know anything about CM9 yet, though.

Regarding the SGSII official ICS kernel.

I have no idea, that's why I'm asking. Chinese leak kernel.. Aaaand.. SGSII kernel. Is the kernel from SGSII remotely the same? I mean, would it be useable, if modified?.. Or is it simply impossible? I'm just thinking.. Cause if it could.. Wouldn't it be more stable?.. And maybe fix some things. Maybe even take stuff from the rom itself, and make ICS run better..? Camera bug and mount and such? Anyway.
Educate me in this, lol. ^^
Cheers.

I don't think it could be applied to SGN as it is, and also don't think it could be modified without its source.
But I think/hope that the Note ICS will be out soon (in a fortnight, perhaps?), so our kernel problems will be over.

[Q] 's on Root Security, Tablet apps on a Note, Paranoia & More.

I have a few more questions before I make the leap to buy my first ever Android based device.
The Questions:
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Is there currently anything I should stay way from that doesn't currently work or isn't stable with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich?
Will Adobes Apps (Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?Would Paranoid Android assist me in this concern? (I think it would based on what I have seen)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.
- Doesn't really matter anymore. If anyone would still like to answer it -here it is.

Bump!
This is the last time I intend to bump this (not that I wanted to in the first place). If this is truly meant to drift off unanswered than so be it.
I just hope that in the event of something horrible (or at least unknown) occurring to my phone that I can search the answer...since asking doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Ok, if you can download it, Adobe it should work. You can try a custom rom which supports tablet mode should you not be able to download with normal dpi. That will enable tablet mode in market, after clearing market data and reboot it should become available for dl.
Currently there are a couple good stock ICS roms and a couple good custom roms. All (except cm9 xplodwild is safe, not other cm9) kernels are dangerous due to Brickrisk of known bug. However, all cm9 based suffer the bugs of cm9, speakerphone broken, high battery consumption, etc. Most have their own bugs on top.
Now ICS source is out wait a couple days as more custom roms and kernels will be build as well as bugfixes. And off course, support the devs with donations for coffee, so they stay awake and make no errors lmao .

1. No. Truth is, root or no root, you are equally vulnerable to malware. Just read the reviews and all before installing any, you know, 'unknown' app.
2. Wiping, factory resets and CWM. Although this is just for stock German ICS and older ICS ROMs like Stunner. New ROMs like Paranoid, CM9 are safe. Still in case you must search before you do anything with custom ROMs just to be on the safe side.
3. Can't find Photoshop Touch on the play store. But there must be a work around am sure. I am using Paranoid by the way.
4. You can pretty much flash a custom ROM and flash various themes and things. Don't know about RAM but you can over clock or under clock your processor. There are various tweaks scattered so just search for it and more often than not you will find it. Carbon tweaks are really good. Search them in themes and apps.

Jelly Bean on I9000...why bother?

What are the benefits of installing JB on an i9000?
I'm aware the FM radio on JB doesn't work and some other function too....then, it seems that all the sleek design of the new ROM will slow CPU speed - surely, is it worth bothering to install the latest ROMs on near outdated smartphones like the i9000?
I've stumbled on the JW4 stock and represent a worthy alternative to Gingerbread 2.3 - then for the sleek look I'm considering some themes....
Have I missed some relevant facts about the JB 4.2 on the i9000? Right now, I wouldn't bother.

For as far as I know, Cyanogenmod never really got Project Butter off the ground on Samsung devices running Exynos processors, like the i9000. I'm running 4.1 Cyanogenmod as well, and it does seem a tad more smooth, but I've no idea if that's because of Project Butter, or just the fact that it's a very nice android version.
I've just tested JB 4.2....nice and sleek look but not Swipe and what happened to my external SD? no "My File" is found so I can't search...no wonder when I check Storage on Settings gives me an error. The Camera also seems very limited (have I missed something?).
Exactly as I initially thought....
All this hype to get the latest ROMs are mostly superficial fads with no substance - good only for greedy developers and bored teenagers in search of new trills to impress their mates - nah, I like using Swipe and FM radio (and searching my files) - back to JW4.

Yeah. They came up with a neat intuitive interface with 4.2 but stripped out so many features. Honestly who in the right mind thought it was a great idea to get rid of the timer option. I used the 4.2 camera for about a day before I just rolled back to the 4.1 camera
You're comparing a ROM that's barely even alpha. Try CM10 4.1.2 stable. That will give you a better idea of what cyanogenmod is capable of. And you can still install Swype. I'm using it right now.
And don't be a troll, it's not very nice
CM10 powered by Mackay kernel

So what's the intention of this thread then?
Try Mackay ROM or CM10. Both are stable and fluid and you will be happy with them. But if you don't even know how to install Swype you should probably stick to stock.

Android jelly bean is fantastic because it is faster and smoother. To solve the problem of radio you should download spirit fm radio light that is NOT a streaming app, but uses the FM radio receiver installed by Samsung on Galaxy.

in fact I've bothered to install swype by myself - never had to do before the "upgrade"?
An upgrade should include all the best functions - swype represents in my opinion the best way to input text - go figure why the developers forgot about it.

ok, if the FM radio isn't lost then this might save the bacon...the future is radio via data or podcasting but when traveling abroad it might be useful to use FM radio to save data roaming (and power too).
I've tested 4 new ROMs (in 2 days): aosp, aokp, xbean, cm10 - the camera has lost many functions - still, the Galaxy doesn't even offer a flash - so, no big deal there.
The JW4 I'm using right now seems faster than any of the JB tested, but I agree about the new ROMs being smoother and more stylish.
The DSP on offer might be worth upgrading...
There are too many new functions which are a bit too geeky and many customizations are a bit OTT (reminds me of some linux distros)...so, I might be tempted to opt for Slim Bean (jelly bean without the fat)....still, I'll wait a few months
no videocall facility
I belive the custom Roms not support videocall fascilty, (correct me,If I am wrong). But rest everything is OK in JB Roms.

But there are improvements in audio & video perfomance compare to Stock GB ROM.

U should try "c-rom Mix v8" or "mckay rom build158 or 161,in my opinion its the two best roms available in JB,in McKay's build there is a small difference in smoothness between the two builds..
C-rom v8 is my favorite,its d... good
Just Because...
Because we can. You, good sir, are asking the wrong question..LOL Why wouldn't you want the latest version of android on existing hardware? It is like having the best of both worlds. New Software, same phone.
Imagine putting windows 8 on a 486, and having it run smoothly. That will never happen.... with android on the other hand... okay, perhaps a little exaggeration there, but you get the idea. (Unless you are to young to remember a 486,)
For me personally, it negates the need to buy a $500 - $600 phone, just to have the latest version of software.
I do however, understand your point of view. I hope that I have answered your question thoroughly.
My swype on 4.2.1 works fine. I do have an sdcard 0/1 bug. I consider that perfectly acceptable, in this scenario.
Panorama camera feature is neat. Although it is not something that I can see myself using a whole lot.
Jeremy
I think the choice belongs to everyone to flash JB...or not.
I tried but i'am back on GB with the sauRom V2. The BEST rom ever flashed on my phone ! ! !
I have tried Miui, Cyanogen, Ics, JB...... None of those roms compares to SauRom in my opinion.
Really worth a try ! Smooth, fast, stable, Very good battery life ! !
Since i'am using it, no need to flash anymore !

[Q] Opinion: Best ROM to use on Galaxy Tab 7.0

I just picked up an original Galaxy Tab 7.0, US Cellular variant for $40 for my kid to use. SCH-I800 is the model. I haven't wipe or done anything with it yet. At a quick glance it has Gingerbread installed and I know that is the last official OS from Samsung. I know this is subjective and opinion, but what is the best ROM I can load on this tablet from ICS forward. Looking for the one that is most functional as it is for my kid so I want to minimize the "Daddy this isn't working." or similar issues. Is there a reliable and smooth ICS or JB build from CM or other that you can recommend? Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Your first worry is to get your Device rooted. I'd suggest you try Super One-Click (http://www.superoneclickdownload.com/). Hopefully that should get you started. As to which ROM... I'd recommend you to download an App called GooManager (Check the Google Play Store!). This should give you a list of compatible ROMs for you to try out.
IMHO. I'd tell you to skip ICS (i.e. CM9), as ICS has the Navigation Bar on it, that can neither be deactivated, or hidden. If ya don't quite get what I'm getting at. This Navigation Bar mirrors all the Buttons on the Screen that are already on the Device itself. (i.e. there's no point in having it On-Screen). So I would from this stand point recommend you to jump to Jelly Bean. (i.e. CM10(.1 / .2)) which should get ya JB 4.1.2 ~ 4.3.x. The problem with the newer versions some CM10.1 and definitely with CM10.2. are broken Front Camera (i.e. It takes Black Pictures with 0kb), and or broken Bluetooh Radio. Thankfully most of the CM10.1 - based ROMs don't have these Bugs though.
But, again you should try a few ROMs though the GooManager first...
Thanks for the feedback. Very familiar with Google Manager from my HP Touchpad and Nook Color. I guess I'll start with CM 10.1. Looking for a solid build with the least bugs & issues; newest features are secondary.
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using some version of Tapatalk that maybe works sorta some of the time perhaps (I think)...
Afterthought... If I use Nova Launcher with CM9 wouldn't I be able to hide the persistent bar? Just a thought and if not I'll start with JB.

I use Nova Launcher on JB to give me greater control over how I re-size my Widgets on my Homescreen. I'm not aware of any function I've ever come across, that'll let you turn off or hide the Navigation Bar. AFAIK you can't do it on ICS 'cause its a System Requirement, and turning it off may either break the entire OS. Or at least make it unstable. The few "Hacks" I've seen Posted on how to disable the Navigation Bar on ICS have never worked on my GT-P1000 (GSM Model).
Like I said though, Paranoid Android v2.53, akop-sgt7, HumberOS and cdesai (Sapir) ROMs based on CM10(.1) have all worked well enough for me. But, your Millage may vary. I would HIGHLY recommend you to have copies of Heimdall, Heimdalls' One Click Recovery, Oden v1.70 as well as the Samsung Kies Software installed before you start. It would also be advisable to track down the GB.Stock_Safe_v5.zip file. http://d-h.st/oDP (i.e. The Overcome Gingerbread (2.3.3) Recovery Files*). As you WILL NEED THOSE as well. You need to make sure you flash the correct Modem.bin File for your CDMA Device though, or else you'll end up with a Softbrick. Phone - /!\ - PC Screen. At which point you'll then need to use the One Click-Recovery, to fix it again.
Thanks again for the great advice. You've given me a good start so now all I need to do is find some time to get started. I realized after buying the tablet the charger they gave me does not have a detachable USB cable so I ordered one so I can get started. Thanks again! CM 10.X here I come...
