[Q] From 2.2 to 2.3.6 (Value Pack) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
my sister experienced huge lags on her Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
Thirst thing I noticed when she gave me her phone, was that she still was using Android 2.2 (PDA I9000XWYPA; Phone I9000XXJPP; CSC I9000MOBJP1).
After that I navigated through some menus, started some apps, etc. and the phone was lagging as hell. Of course restarting didn't make things better.
A update to the Value Pack and installing Chainfire's Ext4-App should remove most lag, if I got this right.
So here's what I want to do:
01. Backup data (APN, SMS, SD-Card, Photos,...)
02. Root (SuperOneClick)
03. Install Titanium Backup and Backup apps
04. Remove Simlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045)
05. Wipe/Factory Reset
06. Delete all data on external SD
07. Flash "GT_I9000_XXJW_XXJW4_OXAJW4_Sbl" with Odin and Repartition (512.pit) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881)
08. Flash CF-Root Kernel "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS"
09. Install and use "CF-Root-ext4-v1.3-Addon.apk"
10. Change CSC
Is this the right way?
Also I have got some questions:
Is the archive "GT_I9000_XXJW4_XXJW4_OXAJW4_Sbl" (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881) the full Value Pack, not a leaked beta or something? (It contains three *.tar.md5 files)
Do I even need to do a factory reset if I Repartition while flashing?
The download of the ROM says "MultiCSC: CPW, DBT, KOR, XEO, XEU". Does this mean I can only use these CSCs with this ROM? Do I even need to use the right CSC?
As long as I backup the APN-Settings, there shouldn't be anything important that's missing if I understood it right?

"Phone EFS Clear" in Odin. Am I screwed?

Someone please help me...
I accidentally flashed on Odin with the "Clear EFS" box checked, and the phone boots up and has a signal... I can make phone calls, but it cannot connect to any kind of data service. Wifi still works, but I cannot use 3G data AT ALL.
I've tried every kind of reset, and every kind of re-activation there is... Does anyone have any ideas???
You need to add an APN in your settings probably

You just need to add the APN again to gain 3G data access..
Im also about to flash my phone with CLEAR EFS option on hopes to restore the IMEI and product code from JPC.. to what firmware did you flash to ?
I was going to do this when flashing to JM7 but then I read that what the option essentially does is restore the backup files from the same directory, and apparently if you don't have these files the entire EFS folder ends up empty. Can anyone confirm this?
I managed to fudge up the backup efs files so unless someone knows a way to edit the existing ones I guess I'll have to live with a KOR marked phone.
Editing your Product code:
I had the whole product code issue when I flashed to JPC starting with O2U and JPC took me to KOR... and with some tinkering I now have an XEU device! I managed to edit my product code using the method detailed below. I have a feeling that the JPC update only changes the product code of a device isn't XEU or KOR already... I'm not entirely sure, but when I flashed to JPC with O2U it changed my product code to KOR... when I flashed to JPC after using the method below it now registers as an XEU. I don't know if flashing after this fix is necessary (it may be needed to re-write csc files?!?)
Please appreciate that I am not a developer, but a tinkerer! I used adb rather than EStrongs... but have written these instructions to use estrongs for the ease of those who aren't familiar with shell commands.
You will need:
Root Access to your Phone
a Hex Editor (there are a few free ones on download.com)
Estrongs File Explorer (from Google Marketplace, cause it has root access and means you won't need to use terminal (hopefully))
Instructions:
1a) in Estrong, go to settings and enable both root options
1b) Use Estrongs to navigate to the /efs/ folder on your phone.
2) Copy "nv_data.bin" and then paste it to your sdcard.
3) Mount your device to a computer and then make a copy of "nv_data.bin" and rename it to "nv_data.bin.bak" and leave that un edited on your sdcard (that way you have a contingency to return to should everything go wrong!).
4) Open "nv_data.bin" with your hex editor and use the find command to locate any occurance of 'KOR' in the file.
5) Replace each occurrence of KOR with the code your choice, be it ORA, XEU, O2U, etc.
DO NOT ADD ANY EXTRA CHARACTERS AS THIS MAY RENDER THE FILE UNUSABLE BY THE ANDROID SYSTEM
6) Save the file and then unmount your phone.
7) Use Estrongs to copy the "nv_data.bin" from your sdcard back to the efs folder overwriting the old "nv_data.bin" file
8) Reboot the phone (push and hold the power button for 10 seconds or yank the battery your choice!!!)
9) Hook up to Kies and check the registry entry to make sure it worked! )
Hope that helps.

How to install CyanogenMod over GOT

Hello,
i have GOT 2.2, and now i want to install teh latest Cyanogenmod.
However i dont know were to include "update-0.04-10.12.08-cm-6.1.0-Milestone-signed.zip".
In my sd card i have 2 folders:
OpenRecovery
OpenRecovery-CFG
Should i put somewhere inthere the files downloaded?
Or should i delete them, and download another Open Recovery?
Thank you so much for the help!
here => Openrecovery\updates
Then in the OR you have to choose the option apply update.zip
/Edit: did u flash the 2.2.1 kernel first or is this already included in this zip?
kernel is included in the zip
(i update to CM6 from 2.1)
but you can flash 2.2.1 got if you want (i don't know why you should do this, but you can ^^)
When you say flash you mean sbf? Yes I used sbf and then used the update zip and GOT open recovery.
Thus now I should not delete any folder and just copy the new zip file in updates? There are some other files in there, should I delete them?
And then just apply the update zip through the known way when stating phone? And will see there the updates and choose cynam.

Anyone please?
As i got really confused!
If i just delete the whole two folders and start from scratch would it be ok?
Or does the system need the Open Recovery Folders?
you can put the zip file into the folder"/OpenRecovery/updates"
then reboot your phone to recovery, choose "update.zip"
after that you can choose "update",find "update-0.04-10.12.08-cm-6.1.0-Milestone-signed.zip"
apply,then reboot.over
OK thanks when i apply the update this comes up:
Reboot System
Console
--- Stock Features---
Nandroid
Root Phone
---GOT Modding Menu---
Launch 2,1 Menu
Launch 2.2.1 Menu
Launch CM6 menu
---- Stock GOT Features Menu---
Miscellaneous
USB Mas Storage mode
Settings Menu
Wipe & Cleaning Menu
Open Recovery loader
ok found it it was in another menu!
So i suppose the same would happen for other ROMs as well?
For example MIUI?
MIUI is the same, but not every rom.
you should watch the notice carefully
and before and after your updating,
wipe is very important.
or mabe you can't pass the M picture
Well, with this Rom, I can't connect to google services.
Gmail is not in my applications and also I can't install it... market cannot load... when I press add account, it just goes to desktop...
Any ideas about what shall I do? Now I have nil contacts...

GT-I9000 root using recovery mode

hi,
I have a Samsung GT--i9000 Galaxy S phone with a dodgy usb port.
I am sending it off to get fixed but need to back up the phone first.
To fully back up I believe I need to root the phone to enable back up of application data using titatium or my backup.
Phone Details
Firmware : 2.3.3
Baseband Version : I9000SRJV1
Kernel version : [email protected] #2
Build number : GINGERBREAD.XWJVN
Because the usb is buggered, rooting methods using odin etc which involve connection to a pc are not possibe.
Also because I am running gingerbread 2.3.3 apps like Z4root/gingerbreak etc wont work.
Does anyone know a way to root this phone from recovery mode, or other method without using USB ?
This thread does what i think i want for the i9001 but I cant find a solution for my GT-i9000

advance thanks for any comments

If its a matter of saving your data files, you can use My Phone Explorer on your PC and Client from Market with WIFI, to save the entire contents of your internal SD card to your PC ( link below on MY Android Collections)
If you still need root download i9000 root update.zip (same link) and install via 2e recovery

Thanks for responding, Just so that I'm clear, I have 2 follow up questions please
1) If I sync files using My Phone Explorer over wifi to my PC , then optus factory reset my phone, can I just sync back to phone
to get back to the current phone state ? Or is a more comprehensive backup like titanium (with root access) required to fully back up the phone ?
i.e. I want angry birds and other apps to retain their settings / scores etc but am unsure whether this can be achieved this way.
2) The 2e recovery readme speaks of flashing with odin and thus a usb connection that I cannot do.
Did you mean that I can just put the i9000 root update.zip onto the SD card and boot in recovery mode without using the files from this 2e recovery archive or am I missing something here ?
In any case thank you for your help . Love the phone explorer btw, compared to Kies this is fantastic.

If you save the entire Internal SD card, none of your data for games , settings etc will be lost, you only need to reinstall the app a new and paste back the data , but IF you want your system and data back, than tintanium should do it
anyway that is a SD card zip file for rooting ( look under unlock and rooting), as such you don't need USB connection

I used MyPhoneExplorer to sync the files on the memory card but it appears that without root access this solution will not back up hidden application data. I base this on not being able to locate the angry birds data files on the back up (or on the phone in phone explorer for that matter) ie no com.rovio...... any where. In fact there are only a handfull of com.xxx. application files under the data directory.
So it appears to me that the phone must be rooted to back up application data.
Can anyone confirm this observation : Is the only way to backup application data via a rooted phone ?
xsenman, sorry for being obtuse but do you mean that I simply need to
1) put the root i9000 update.zip onto my external SD card.
2) reboot using power/home/volume up combo.
3) pick the update.zip file from menu.
4) wait while updating then power off and on
After this my phone will be exactly the same only now with root access ?
thanks again, I need to be sure about this before proceeding.

I doubt that you need to be rooted to save your game data, it may be in the Phone memory or have its own folder under a different name
anyway, yes you only need to use update.zip in 2e Recovery as above, to root using that file , root will only install a superuser in your phone and nothing else.

there is an app on google play called Angry Birds Backup 2 SD. This will save all your progress for Angry Birds and will restore once your phone is returned. For other apps you will have to find another way.

Looks like I'm screwed as phone has gingerbread 2.3.3 and therefore has recover 3e not 2e.
To degrade to recovery 2e I need to flash a custom kernel so I'm back to requiring odin again to achieve that which of course I cant do without a working USB port.
Ok I admit defeat and give up, unless someone else can suggest a way to do this (without USB) I don't think that this can be done.
At least I know enough now to do this via USB / odin or even superoneclick once the device comes back from repair.
Need to root
Please give the link to download update.zip aka root.zip
(I bought an I9000 only yesterday.
I don't have access to PC.
Framaroot doesn't work ?! )
Thanks
custom recovery + root: use "Mobile Odin" (use the free version as you'll only be flashing a kernel) just extract the .zip file so you have one .tar file and flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108

The following can still be useful.
AS I deal with this ROM: I have had some problems with the SD swap. I have learned to never let CWMR protect custom recovery for this particular rom by choosing yes on reboot. It zeros out the permissions for install-recovery.sh and the Avsi rom needs that script for the swap.
I think TWRP changes the same to ...bak and you have no choice & this behavior depends on your version.
USE CWMR AND ALWAYS CHOOSE ANY NO ON REBOOT.
Thanks for the "Recavery". I wish there were more of these and Devs were not so offended (?) by this technique.
ZaYAC-ua, I am willing to believe, should not mind some loving care applied to this TWRP Recavery based ROM.
Note here a bootup of the bare system with google login etc... I could never get to work for phone and 4g service. So all my talk here is about a simple work around for Vzw users.
Edit fixed! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44946498&postcount=17
All the following is just a method to activate the rom on Vzw.
In my case it was DeadCalm http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/17778-romretail-deadcalm-v14-7172013-412-base/
But other deodexed stock bases should work:
http://droid-hive.com/index.php?/topic/1768-fxz-412-98161-dst/ DST remix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307254 CleanROM
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...unofficial-dst-wmods-unlocked-bootlader-only/ DST (not deodexed) Not sure.
New steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44946498&postcount=17
The Telstra rom has the same radio and a newer kernel. With the DroidRazrWidget you can use it anywhere in the world. But stay away from them on Vzw.
Warning: NEVER TOUCH THE "BAND" IN THE 3 DOT MENU in phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) IT WILL BREAK YOUR BASEBAND (RADIO). The result on the M (and other phones?) is no 4G, spotty 3G and mostly 1x. The only fix is to restore w RSD or Matts util.
The The english dialer is a must for most of of us.
Edit the following will disable the task killer in the recent apps.
I really like this mod :"Center Clock, Honeycomb Battery, Menu Nav Key mod" at

Use this to get readable white buttons.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.janis605.softkeyz
Then I found this.
http://d-h.st/users/s.dubs
This implementation of the initd SD swap is the best I have used. NO PROBLEMS if you boot w/o the external card. It works great. Like a permanent "FolderMount.apk". Just get a BIG SDcard. Basically internal SD memory is disabled (rather now used by your apps). And Storage info is skewed. The Op's swap thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229848
Or delete the initd mod from its folder.

This has one step newer kernel then our newest so who knows. Backup & try.
News
Update: I mistakenly wiped data while on Philz 6. I Booted to the start screen. I knew this would break 4g & it did. Rsd restore is the only fix. Be warned. Even after a cwmr restore, no 4g.
So I updated my restore thread to ...94.
Note here a bootup of the bare system with google login etc... I could never get to work for phone and 4g service. So all my talk here is about a simple work around for Vzw users.
The first rom you flash is just a facilitator that alters your data in a way that Telstra needs to boot on your vzw data partition.
I found a path for all unlocked stock'ers, on 98.18.78 (same as 9.8.1Q-78) OR 98.18.94, to upgrade to a newer kernel and have a built in SD swap.
Don't want to stay on this rom. Restore your former system & boot of any of the previous ones & keep your current data! That is right do not wipe data coming or going!
Note here: Many think this is somehow a less than a Real Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40584507&postcount=3 (I am not picking on him)
Yet NOBODY HAS EVER FLASHED A XT905 PARTITION TO A XT907 WITHOUT A BRICK BEING FORMED!
So the Restore-a-Backup Rom method brings us what NOBODY has done before.
Start on the newest ...94 or the one before ...78.
Start with your activated & rooted (vzw) stock (unlocked bootloader only)
Make sure you have booted up done google login & used the stock messaging.
Go CWMR. (see goodies for flashables)
Backup!
Wipe Cache & Dalvik
Mount system (& keep data- do not wipe data)
Flash (install) http://d-h.st/users/Moparman371/?fld_id=23066#files
Reboot system
Go cwmr
Wipe Cache & Dalvik
Flash/install the Avst_ZaYAC_MODsmXBIN.cwmr.zip from next post.
Flash the Op's options: english dialer fix & battery fix & as you desire....
Reboot
TWRP will not install the Avst_ZaYAC_MODsmXBIN.cwmr.zip.
twrp v2.6+: will not messed w/ the install-recovery.sh.
cwmr: always choose NO about protect recovery flash.
Never protect recovery on reboot except when on our official rom-yes.
DO NOT try activate this system with Google login as you would a normal Rom.
It must be activated via your currently activated data partition.
Vzw users: You will never be able to do a privacy > factory data reset OR a recovery data wipe on this rom. Doing so & then rebooting will bork your radio partition OR result is 3g only, but this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391641
is the fix if you do.
The Razr data widget when on vzw is not needed & untested by me..
The stock mms/sms can sometimes get borked on vzw just use Handsent.
I am back on this as I still find it superior to even 98.30.1 for many things but Bluetooth in particular- connectivity & audio volume.
Update: Avsitralia.Xposed.mod2 coming. Lenovo cam & gallery up. Use only as a data app, will bomb if a sys app.
Flashing Moparmans...98.16.3 on top of 98.18.94 Data works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go back one post for VZW users: keep your data + install/upgrade.
I have updated the Op's restore "rom". As it was, it's xbin would result in a 447 mb larger backup file when you made your first backup. 584 mb vs 137 mb. Edit, I did previously get a much larger BU file but not with the newer Philz .
I just deleted all of xbin but the two su files & installed xbin via this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
This is an "update".zip created with Philz. Use it in place of the original. Install it rather than restore. All other steps will be the same. Untested with Droid razr data widget, which may be the Rabbit's need of such big xbin.
I can up a twrp version too.
Click on the attachment, copy & paste to Chrome or get Mega.
All current Vzw 98.18.94 OR 98.18.78 unlocked boots may flash this Telstra rom & keep their apps & data. See post 18 & 17.
After being on Mhous33's DST build of 98.30.1 for weeks, I realize how much better this Telstra version is. See previous post.

[Q] Lost IMEI, etc the /efs folder and how to reuse and oldcopy

I am puzzled and confused about the /efs folder.
I have a P1000 which was running a January nightly build of CM10; this worked, including the telephone function, sort of...
I then upgraded to Android 4.2.2, CM10.1 from 21030728 - which works much better BUT it lost all the telephone capabilities (it shows Baseband version unknown). After much digging I think understood correctly that I must have ruined my /efs folder.
I do have previous /efs folder copies (not made with any particular tool) on my external SD card but even using something like Root Browser or Root File Manager to copy an old version (in which the telephone worked) to write over the existing /efs folder I do not regain access to the phone function.
My questions are these, if anyone can explain to me what is happening for I would like to understand:
1. I tried to delete the existing /efs folder (using Root Browser and Root File Manager) but it does not delete: why?
2. I am clearly doing something wrong when trying to copy an old version in order to write over the existing one (which does not work): what and why and how do I get around this to make it work?
3. How does Android protect the /efs folder and is there a way to get round this?
i have read far and wide but so much seems to be contradictory or inconsistent. Or is there a place where all is explained (and if so where?).
Thank you in advance.
Hello,
I had the same problem. I have restocked my Galaxy Tab but it did not work. I have tried to flash the modem with odin and it works! After reboot my Galaxy Tab i have Signal and the imei is restored. I have root my Galaxy Tab again and flash CM10.1 and it works prefect. I have now CM10.1 on my tab and i can use phone functions and the imei is restored. Have you tried to restock it and flash the modem with odin?
Good Luck!
Besides restocking or flashing a modem, you can try and restore your EFS backup with EFS Professional... Try to give it a shot.
