[Q] IceColdSandwich reboots.. launcher related? - HTC Incredible S

I've been using the cold sandwich since 5.xx and always used the trebuchet launcher.
Love it, but I get reboots in google maps all the time (read the latest posts in the dev thread, several people experiencing the same issue, while there are others who are baffled!)
I did something bold and switched to apex, and went wild on the gmaps, no reboots.
I might be way off... but could this issue which several users are experiencing in the dev thread be launcher related?

No I was using apex and version 7 kept freezing so you had to pull the battery

I haven't had to deal with any battery pullings so far with the rom in question, it's just reboots in my case.
Intriguing.

I only used the Trebuchet launcher and didn't have any reboot issues.

My GMaps crashes in ICS (6.2/7.0) too. Most of the time it just freezes the phone and I had to remove battery. Sometimes it reboot by itself. I have been using Apex all along so I guess it's not launcher related.

ICS 7.0 with nexus default launcher(no modifications) is running property on my phone.

Do you use Google Maps often? I only have crashes when using Google Maps occasionally.

Maps (6.5.0) with opening GPS Wifi has no problem for me. Have you flashed the kernel that from the first post?
345-1190Mhz ondemand
Kernel: x-ICS-v3-VDD from the first post.

Yes, I'm also using this kernel in order to solve the YouTube issue. Again, in my case, the crash is intermittent but frequent enough to be annoying if you really need to use GMaps for navigation.

Yes, but only a few times to use.
I've modified the ROM. I edited the egl.cfg from "/system/lib/egl/" and delete "0 0 android". Maybe this can solved it.

Thanks! I'll try that. Removing this line disable software rendering, right?

I bet this is kernel-related issues. All community is waiting for HTC to release 3.0 source code for last year's phones

I removed the line "0 0 android" last night and played around Google Maps for several hours and encountered no issue. But the phone rebooted after exiting Star Chart which is another graphics intensive app.
Then I flashed PlayGround ICS. So far I found no stability issue but I can feel the phone is a little bit less snappy than IceColdSandwich. Will keep on testing.

Yeah, I had already flashed the kernel from first post. Same problem.
But I have never changed anything in ROM Control/overclocking.
Is '345-1190Mhz ondemand' working best for you and others?
What's recommended in terms of performance/battery life?
Thanks

I've just switched from IceColdSandwich to PlayGround (7 beta) for 2 days now. I've encountered no stability issue with Google Maps or other apps so far. Even the previous issue that GPS will cease to work after using for a certain period of time is gone.
So it's highly recommended for those having stability/GPS issue with IceColdSandwich.

I'm not complaining, just curious to find out what's causing it

[ROM] Ruby 1.1.4 Reports

Similar to my thread based around CM 6.1 progress and reports on the latest nightlies, I present what should become a telling collection of anecdotal evidence.
Ruby 1.1.4 was released and many users are very satisfied with its performance. As 1.1.1 now appears old hat, and its original thread is waning and reads like War and Peace, please refer to this post for future observations. What I would like to see is:
1. Bugs encountered that are repeatable only after a full wipe
2. Glowing reviews and/or recommendations for bits some users are unfamiliar with
3. Odd errors that perhaps we can assist with (ie. known fix)
4. Chatter about the upcoming release of Ruby 1.2 for the Inc
I look forward to any and all suggestions, input, feedback, and all around camradery. Also, keep the flames to yourself

Well, thanks for the opportunity...
I have been using Ruby 1.1.4 as my daily driver for the past two weeks or so and find it to be perfect for my use. Although I have strayed to check out the latest and greatest, HD, Z, Feather, etc. I always come back to Ruby.
Everything works. I've added the popular mods, i.e. signal fix, etc., removed some apps that I don't like or use and I'm really happy with Ruby overall. Looking forward to 1.2.
Can't say the same for some of the vanilla apps like mail and gallery, but there are suitable replacements for those available via the market.
My thanks to the Ruby crew...

Yea it's down, teamdouche doesn't have any gapps listed at the moment. A quick search I found a mirror but have not confirmed this is the same thing. Use if you like, otherwise wait for someone to provide a mirror.

Full build. Running stable so far, no noted issues.
I've been running 1.1.4 for a couple of days. I don't use Bluetooth very often, so I've only installed the RIL patch. Together with ADW Launcher I'm very happy with this ROM.
The only bug (or missing feature) I found is in regards to the Pattern lock. When I enable it, the unlock screen no longer shows up so I can't use the music controls. However, if I enable the PIN-base lock the unlock screen works just fine. In all Sense ROMs whenver I enable the Pattern lock the unlock (tabular) screen does not go away. I filed a bug at CC ROM's website. This seems like something trivial, so hopefully they'll get it in in the next release.
EDIT: You might want to add to the OP the url link for the RIL update, I've been using it and haven't experience any 3g issues.

Ruby 1.1.4 still says it's 1.1.1 in my about screen.

As far as I know, it's less of a missing feature than a feature in itself. CM, ShadowROM, all the AOSPs I've tried have that "feature."
However, I too am annoyed by it xD But it seems intentional.
Where can I find the RIL patch?

Nice to see my patch is still doing something for you guys. I wonder if they will ever release an official version again.
I almost feel like pulling down the code and compiling a version with the fixes in it...
Can we use the Gapps zip from 1. 1. 1....
How is GPS working in this version? I don't know if it was the RIL or 1.1.1 but I noticed that the cell triangulation (ie. the blue circle that pops up when you first open maps) broke somewhere along the way. Pinpointing GPS would work but it was very slow (takes at least a minute or more).
At first I didn't mind the wait but I realized it caused a lot of apps that require your location (Poynt, Where, etc.) to stop working.
Odd thing is on a clean install GPS pinpointing would always be almost instant but subsequent to that it would get slower and slower. Curious if anyone else is encountering the same.
I have three questions about 1.1.4:
Does EMMC work on Ruby? I mean like in gallery and music. Itt works on Cyanogen but now Shadowrom or inc does. Thats the biggest determining factor of my using Ruby.
is it possible to get the black vanilla messenger from Cyanogen?
Also, the black bar theme that Ruby has, gives you the HTC battery icon, however I prefer the vanilla android battery. Is it possible to make a theme from the changes I made in Cyanogen?
Also if you want EMMC to mount on windows, this fix was posted I dont know if it works on ruby, if you're brave you can give it a try:

I would suggest using the one posted in the 1.1.4 download link. The op in that link also suggested to use only 1.1.4 themes...meaning that if the 1.1.1 you were using has not been ported over to 1.1.4 don't try to install it.

I've had the 1.1.4 (clean install) for 4-5 days, so hard to tell, but on Tuesday I used the GPS with Maps for about an hour and it worked great. I'll report in a few weeks if I ever use the GPS again.

EMMC works on Ruby. However, it seems that you can only mounted on a Mac, not on a PC. I connected the phone to my PC at work and it only recoginized the SD card. However, when I connected it to my Macbook it detected both EMMC and SD card.
By "black vanilla messager" you are referring to the Text Messaging app or the Google Talk? If you are talking about text messaging, there is a setting that allows you to change the background to black. In regards to the themes, I would suggest you stick with the themes made for 1.1.4 (as in the download link). If you want specific changes to the them the OP suggested contacting the created of the specif theme you are interested in.

Finding reasons for reboots

Hi,
Im just curious how to track down the reason for reboots with stock ROM and stock kernel, not rooted. I had one random reboot yesterday (when watching trailers in the IMDB app) after almost a week I own N7. I know that one reboot in a week is nothing, but its my new toy and Id like to know how to track down the reason for that in case it happens again.
I found out some threads about this and generally it says I should use LogCat - but I dont know how to use it. So I please ask for help! For now, I started Stability Test (CPU+GPU) and wait ...
Happy New Year, Y'all !!!
EDIT: Ghardashyan a bit lower mentioned hes been having reboots when watching youtube videos. Anybody else having this kind of behavior? Also, I had my reboot when watching trailers in the IMDB app - its playing via youtube, right?
The ONLY reboot I have ever seen, is when the default lockscreen widget gets updated by the marketplace. It's guaranteed to reboot on 4.2. It does it every time on both my Nexus 4 and my Nexus 7.
You will only ever see it, if you remove the default android 4.2 lockscreen time widget and put something else there from the marketplace, and only when that widget gets a marketplace file update.
Perhaps you are seeing this? Do you have auto-update apps enabled???

I dont have auto-update enabled. I added another time/weather widget to the lockscreen but I dont think it got updated yesterday ... I will remove it and hope it wont reboot again. I sure think it was some app as the stability test goes for 2 hours without problem.

Its to do with location based services, HD Widgets is a major culprit and stated they were talking to Google to try and resolve the issue, it is also as stated before mainly because of the new lockscreen widgets, which HD Widgets also provide, so the stock widget could also cause the same issue?
Mine have pretty much stopped with the last update of HD Widgets, but it does still occur.

Since you're on stock rom and kernel, I think the best way would be to reset your device and keep track of what applications are installed, one at a time.
My guess is that one of the installed apps are causing it..

I know that, but as it was one reboot only in less than a week, it could take months to track the app down ... Im about to restart the device myself and then use alogrec to continually record stuff.
EDIT: Alogrec is not recording a thing, so I rooted my phone. In case of restart, I believe it should be enough to save last_kmsg. Am I right?

Correlation does not equal causation and it seems some are eager to go barking up the wrong tree. As has been stated here, as well as confirmed by Google, it is a bug at the OS level. It has nothing to do, per say, with HD Widgets, YouTube, or any individual app. It affects all products running 4.2 and 4.2.1.
Until Google fixes the issue, there are only two guaranteed workarounds- disable location services or downgrade to 4.1.2.

Settings › Location. Bear in mind that the tradeoff is that, among other things, Google Now will no longer be functional.
For me, the reboots haven't been annoying enough to warrant disabling it on mine just yet.

BTW, when Google finds a solution for this, should I expect a full system upgrade?

Mostly though its during wifi/network activity not just in one app, have had reboots while in youtube, ebay, chrome etc. I have also seen it reboot while in standby

I really have no clue what the problem can be. I suppose the transparencies are causing some rendering issues. I hope Google fixes this soon!
Many people have reported this issue on different roms for the Desire HD. CodefireX, Jellytime and CM10.1 all suffer from it.
I hope Google fixes this soon cause Maps is unusable in its current state.

Happens on my HTC Evo 3D too. The glitches are more severe when the phone is in portrait mode.
If it is Maps 7, then I think its Googles issue and not any of the ROMS or devices we are using them on... As this happens on my phone too..

did you trying re-installing maps?
Is this issue mentioned anywhere else? I checked at http://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!categories/maps/mobile-android but didn't find anything.
I am having the same problem, 'rjand' on this forum suggested for me to downgrade Maps to a previous version (version 6.*). I have done this, but have yet to test if the problem persists.
Downgrade Maps
Old thread, but this may help @xmanfit0 , @lokster and others like me who found this thread by searching for "Google Maps cyanogenmod glitch".
I had this problem on my HTC Vivid with CM10, but after downgrading to Google Maps 6 it works nicely.

Make sure you have the one with the correct resolution installed, link Play Services apk`s http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/.
It's happening to a LOT of people. Oddly, it seems pretty random. Many are not affected. And since Google Play Services auto-updates in the background, those of us that are affected will eventually get hit again even if we downgrade. The clear app data/cache is the only "fix" I've seen thus far.
Interestingly, it seems to only happen for me on AOSP ROMs. I've had a stock image running for days without issues. I'll probably stay on stock till Google fixes it or someone finds a more promising workaround. It's annoying, but less annoying than constant FCs.

Bloody hell, recently Google/CM drive me mad - every update brings new problems! Common guys, are you a bunch of amateurs? Cant get it right for a few months now?

Probably is, but it's also kind of important issue.
It's not a "not working icon bug" it's a bug that's preventing you from using your phone. Kind of important, don't you agree ?

Workaround
I come up with a workaround for Google FC - using Tasker (with Secure Settings plugin) do the following on Shutdown and Boot:
1. Kill Google Play services
2. Clear Data for Google Play services
3. Clear Cache for Google Play services
So far haven't got Google FC, will see how it goes :crying:

I've tried almost 4/5 different pie's rom, included this one and i've noticed random crashes for facebook, messenger, chrome, etc. I think it's a problem of kernel (same for all the roms i've installed and tried) but nothing else. After a reboot apps works normal but, sometimes, a stop occurs.
Edit: question... have you installed gapps? Maybe a dumb question but...
Very good.
Thank you!

Yes I did, flashed everything again and it's working flawlessly, maybe try installing LKT module with magisk and put balanced profile, I've almost no crashes at all, I honestly don't remember the last the time it happened

I did not know magisk before a week ago ... but even worse I did not know the LKT module. It looks rather promising, I'll try it, in balanced mode. Thanks for the indirect suggestion!

You'll love it
Tried several pie rom for Redmi 4 prime, same issue:
"Cast/Miracast" cannot be used, when connecting to a wireless display adapter, screen will turn black and desktop will FC/crash, looks like a soft reboot. Same adapter can be connected correctly with no issue under 3rd party 8.0 rom (e.g. Lineage15.1 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hGQoixLYwJZWNx0pcPVF-DlKi11Wb-_U)
Can anyone test it on this rom? Much apprecipated.
Why have two cameras?
And detected one bug. When unlock with fingerprint automatically locked again and have to unlock again and unlock normal

Yup, a little boring. For now only thing i can say is that after an install of new appz a reboot will solve the problem. For old appz too, i guess...sometime i see 2 or 3 crashes and i can't launch any app. So reboot is the way for the moment.

I've read somewhere, probably 4pda that it's just a bug, you can just freeze them and install gcam

For the camera, you could uninstall it using Titanium Backup or just browse to the directory and remov it
For the automatically locked bug, i'm having same issues but atleast it happen only when unlocking using fingerprint

Is there any solution than rebooting the devices? Rebooting the devices to fix the crashes is giving a kind of pain u know
