Well AFAIK you need to decompile the framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk and change a lot of things in there. Have a look in my noob how to, there are links to short guides of how to by huexxx and gabwerkz.
You can also find a lot about theming when you use the search up there. It's pretty much the same for every device, although filenames and paths might differ

I'd like it to be proof-read by somebody else. Not meaning to be disparaging to your possible skill, but a guide written with the same rampant disregard of English shown here is likely to lead to confusion. Guides and tutorials should be written mindful of the fact that exactness and clarity is required.
I would really like to know how to sign a ROM... mainly because I'd like to be able to modify existing ROMs with different apps and ringtones prior to flashing, which would be MUCH easier than having to do everything through Terminal after flashing.
It would help if there was a list of hero apps that would work when creating a normal G1 rom (not hero).

Look in the theme forum for stericson's auto-signing tool. You can sign roms with it. Its reallyeasy to set up and you can use it to sign .zip files. Its what i use with all my themes and it works great
I am at work on my phone right now but when i get home i will edit this post with a link to it if i remember

I'd like a section dealing with modifying-upgrading the kernel, ramdisk, and really anything dealing with the boot and recovery images (since I've already learned most of the workings of the system partition)

Hi i've been using the x8 for 2 months now running on GingerDX v009.. I've learned many things from this community.. and i wanna learn more..
For starters.. How do i build a ROM? using ROM kitchen? if yes which one is compatible with our X8? Will i need extensive knowledge in linux or in programming?
With the ROM kitchen you don't actually build a ROM, you just give it some features (I've tried it). If you know anything about coding and stuff like that, I've been told that the android developers site is a good start. I'm a beginner myself. So far I've made only an icon pack apk LOL

I want to start too. Can you or any other give me an "How to start guide for NOOBS" for me? I'm really noob in this xD
Before you start developing, you should know how Android works. As I said before, you will find everything you need in the Android Developers site. And..c'mon! You can't start making ROMs when you haven't even made a simple app yet!
I want to start developing apps, and after that developing some modifications to existing apps and system files. When i know how to do that i can simply make a rom because i know how to compile roms on kitchen

Take a look at this.
I don't know if this is good, because I didn't read it all... but I think it may help you

(this link is in portuguese, so don't bother going there if you don't understand)
Online tutorials might help you... There are a lot of them out there... Choose the one which you feel is better... I'm also on the same boat as you..
I personally prefer "thenewbiston" channel.. There you can find tutorials for android application development as well as java(which is very important for app development)..
Then you can move onto cooking roms...
All the best....

As the title says - Adding libs to roms, can someone point me in the right direction? I have been a member of this forum for a while, just not a posting member, I now feel it is my time to add something back to the community, is it as simple as adding it to the rom whilst flashed to an X8? Please help me, maybe I can bring something back to the community..

make sure your phone rooted

Thank you, I will try that, I am wishing to work on a ROM and get wifi, 3G and such working, however I have tried using ADB to push the libs but I don't know if it worked or not..

I want to make the whole sense rom work, BUT I can't access the system files without having the rom installed which is pretty gay.. I need some way of accessing it in the .img format which then I can flash to my phone to test... mshhh... plus I'm not quite sure which libs will work (ofcourse when I find out I will seek permissions before uploading the rom...)
To open .img you could use Winimage or Poweriso or something similar.

Already tried, same problem... I found an unyaffs2 program compiled for windows which allowed me to extract the image I just need to mkyaffs2 it back to img then maybe I can get it working BUT I need to be in Linux and I can't be bothered making a VM at the moment...
Maybe someone can help me with this? We could work together to make a fully working sense rom... come on people.. someone who wants this must have a bit of knowledge on the subject...
Hey guys, just a short question, I am just trying to cook "my own Rom" and therefor I am using the Kitchen. When I wanna build it and also at the very beginning, I am being asked, if I wanna change updater-script to update-script.
Now 1. Should I change it?
2. Whats the difference between em?
Especially at the beginning, since this probably changes most...
Sorry I am still Noob and I guess I still gotta learn a lot here
-edit- It's all about v20n btw

If you convert to update-script you can see info about the ROM in the kitchen (don't know what else), but before building the rom change back to updater-script or else it won't flash.
Thankss

Is there an easy way to port a ROM to my phone like maclaw does? I have read many guides in the forum about this and they say that I can just copy-paste some files from the stock rom to the one I want to port but will the ROM work? Can someone provide a guide?

Here one. Using the search box you'll find a lot of them.
That was the post I read. I wasn't sure that it would work for s3 mini. So I can download ANY official custom ROM like CM and port it? Will it work flawlessly or will it have bugs?

I think you can port any rom for our device, but be aware that some things may don't work. Well you need to read some more stuff to learn more (don't take me wrong), I think you know that can be a little complicated & you don't need to build or port, whatever, in 5 minutes right? Take a bit longer to do some really good. Well I wish you good luck.

OK thanks but I am a little noob to make roms a year ago I bought my first android s3 mini and I think that in this period I have learnt many things! I will try with a ROM but I don't think that I will succeed.
Most important maybe, make sure you replace boot and that mount points are correct in updater-script
