I need some help. I have a revolution with 2.2.2 still on the phone. due to being a noob I tried to install a gingerbread version of a rom on the phone of course It didn't seem to work. by the way i should mention I am rooted and I can not upgrade veia the phone upgrade failed every time. However in the research I have done has lead me to believe that all of the roms I want to try to get a hold of are on a non existence web sight Right now I just need anything that will get my phone back up and running. I would very much like to use the revolt Rom but again the multiupload.com is down. Can anyone help me with this. I have searched the sight but I seem to be going around in a circle.
Ok so thank you for helping me out, however, being as I am slow to understand things. I figured things out. and just so everyone else doesn't feel bad. I have no problem with people laughing at me
this may help...

im currently dabblin with this one since my phone is still runnin 2.2.2 as well, reverted to stock rom unrooted everything and no ota updates so this is how to do it manually.
as long as its not currently bricked otherwise u have to do it the long way. i think, unless im thinkin of my old droid... but if this doesnt help give more info and someone will be able to help
regarding OTA, does anyone know the name of the file, and what folder in which to find it? Tired of having to DL it aGAIN every time whatever I try fails. I'm guessing cache....nothing seems real obvious, like it was on my Bionic
(update, got update to complete 2nd try, MtMichaelson is slightly richer!)

THANK YOU
I think the first thing you should do is download the new google apps. You can get them through a search. Go back into recovery and flash the Gapps.zip file. You will then have the market and all the google apps. There is a "rule" that any cyanogenmod ROM cannot have the google apps inside it and must be flashed separately. Go back to where you got the ROM and you should be able to find the Gapps.zip file. Try that first. I am not sure how to get you back to stock, but someone might be able to help in that situation.
If you have a custom ROM on the phone, the hard part is over. Just flash the Gapps.zip file and you will be done. Just breathe and relax. All will be fine.
ok but
im new to the going to recovery and flashing files inform me with a little more of that process been looking it up but know one speaks english when it comes to flashing.
I would go to theunlockr.com. That is where I went to learn how to flash ROMs on my Eris. Look under the how to section for your phone and how to flash a custom ROM. It should give you all the info you need there. Try it out. You will end up with a phone that you will want to keep for a while still. Give yourself time to learn and you might be flashing ROMs daily just to try them out. It will become second nature to you. Trust me, it has for me.
You Have Been Alot Of Help But What About Firmware and Base Band Issues
I put this Sapphire rom on my phone figured out how to put all the good apps and stuff back on but now i have firmware 2.2 so does that mean i can go back to and roms that worked with 2.1 or 2.0.1
If you mean you want to go to previous iterations of android, its entirely possible just find the right rom, and concerning baseband, depending on what you mean by that, you will have to go to your carrier to flash your phone if your service isn't working, but a baseband update is available via rom manager, though as far as I know thats only to increase internet speed. Btw, noone should have to play games of chance to find a solution for an android fix, or be having to search for hours, either, android= ease of use and application, also, your completely welcome to these forums, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Okay so first off let me just say im a total noob at this(as my name implies). My captivate is the first smart phone ive ever had and im just trying to get ahold of all this stuff, so please bear with me here.
Since ive gotten the captivate ive:
Rooted it(not even really sure how)
root explorer app
busy box installer(not really sure what it does)
Titanium backup
Astro file manager
Task Manager
I also had one-click lag fix but i deleted it
I did the app unlock with root explorer and SQlite to remove the annoying att apps
So all this is good and well but now that Im trying to update the phone, it wont update...
It downloads the update, then restarts to the white update screen with a blue bar, then never updates and just restarts. It says unable to update.
And when I try to resume the update it just says "no firmware"
I have no idea whats going on!!!
Also, when deleting un-used apps, I also deleted some files by accident that I thought were useless... they said they took up no memory so i deleted them n realized that was prob a bad idea! Not sure if that may be a cause...
I know that im probly just doing something stupid but then again, i have no idea what im doing!
Please help me out!!!
Thanks
If your phone is still JF6 and your in the US then you can download Mini Kies from Samsung Download Center (which seems to be not loading at the moment Oct 14 12:15pm)
Soon as you start tweaking your device - it will end up fubaring the ATT update. It isn't your fault - its the way AT&T/Samsung setup the update process.
But on the plus side it means it didn't brick your phone.
If your looking just for a stock build of the latest and greatest OTA update with all the bloat - I'd suggest you look for the Odin 1 Click that designgears has posted in the Dev forum here. As long as you have A) DISABLED ANY LAGFIXES! and B) can get into Download mode - its a snap and completely safe.
You will have a completely stock phone and have to restart from scratch - but sometimes thats a good thing
Thanks guys!
Yea, im pretty happy I didnt brick it!!!
Ok, so the phone isnt running badly or anything. It occasionally lags but thats about it. So I dont think I need to flash it back to stock. I just wanted the update for it(mainly to hopefully help the gps which is worse everyday).
I guess its good to know tho.
So what exactly is the kies?
I found it on the samsung site but im not really sure what it is. Driver?
Thanks again!
Kies is Samsumg's attempt at interfacing software (and poorly done if you ask me). If you're in the US, then you have to download the full Kies package as if you live in a different country. It's kind like iTunes but not excataly.
Mini Kies showed up for updating to the newer JH7 firmware. OTA updates were bricking too many phones. I'm hopefull that when the official Froyo drops, this will be the preferred method for updating.

I am an HTC user and always run rooted so I apologize for my ignorance to the ways of the Captivate but I am helping my sister-in-law with her phone and only have tonight to get her up to date. she is currently on Cognition 4.1.1 on Android 2.2 and I would like to get her a fresh ROM that is very stable (i may not get to fix phone for awhile if she has issues). Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction on which ROM is best and what is the best method (and easiest) to flash to it? If memory serves correct she is able to get into download mode so no worries there. And one more FYI, unfortunately the computer with all the files I used to help her out last time I no longer have. Fried motherboard so was unable to recover any files. Any help would be appreciated.
edit: the phone is also on Clockwork 2.5.1.3 with Voodoo Lagfix.

I used Firefly for a really long time. It's by no means new, but it runs great, looks AMAZING (including crazy nice stock wallpapers), and if you really don't know what you are doing, you might want to avoid flashing a gingerbread rom (where you could mess up the bootloaders causing you to brick the phone). And the ICS roms are still a little unstable so you might wanna avoid those as well. The Firefly thread has really detailed instructions too. Nothing wrong with good ol' Froyo! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284
Thanks man. I finally got gingerbread loaded up and haven't heard anything back from her so all I good I assume.
Okay I know there are a bunch of threads out there regarding this, and
yes I have looked at all of them. But the thing is I am completely overwhelmed right now.
Thread after thread, I keep ending up with another thing to download, or use a certain program.
I am just confused out of my mind and I would greatly appreciate some help.
All I want to do is get the ICS rom (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760)
I've been at this for like five hours now. I am usually pretty good with computers and whatnot but I have never messed around with rooting my phone which is probably why I am so lost.
So far I have been able to root my phone using super-one-click.
But I absolutely cannot figure out how to get ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
I have probably downloaded 50 files by now.
Here is how my phone is:
-I am using android 2.2
-I just reset it to factory defaults
-rooted with super-one-click
other than that I have made no progress
****** EDIT***************
I Finally figured it out, if someone can delete this threat it would be great!
Thanks!
Hello All,
I used this website awhile ago to root my phone and use gingervolt. Other than randomly restarting itself once in awhile, the phone works great.
I understand now that there is a new software version realsed by verizon. I tried to install it and it doesnt work. It keeps bugging me about it every day. I tried to do a search, but I'm honestly a little confused about all this. Basically, I need to know what to do. Do I need to unroot my phone, update it, then root it again? If that's the case, I'm not sure how to do that lol
I'm not the most tech savy person and I realize this post has probably already been created. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciated it!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583023 just follow those instructions to be able to update to new version and keep root. then use the batch file provided to install cwm and flash the new broken out rom if you please. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577423
