Force HDMI Mirror when using Lapdock? - Motorola Droid Bionic

I snagged a Bionic lapdock recently during the $80 sale, and mine is in perfect working order. Unfortunately Webtop doesn't have the performance I'm looking for and I would rather just have HDMI mirroring, which it doesn't look like it officially supports.
I can't seem to dig up any info on this, anyone know?

you can always just switch the Mobile view tab to Landscape and full screen it. IT runs smoother but not as sharp as lapdock view. ICS is supposed to bring us a new webtop with smoother performance but who knows when that will be

I would be a huge fan of this... find any solutions? I'd like to mirror and VNC into a full chrooted ubuntu version rather than my limiting hacked up webuntu...

Galaxy tab or viewsonic gTab

I'm looking to buy a cheap tablet. I was going to buy a sgt for $300 off of craigslist but today woot is offering a $275 viewsonic gtab. Which do you recommend?
10.1 screen with only 1024x600 resolution gives very low dpi , and it is android 2.2 not even 2.3 and honeycomb
they have 2.3 . And a start on honeycomb

official ? add fo that no 3g , no phone calls , one 1.3 camera and again bad dpi
I originally bought the Viewsonic tablet and hated the resolution and size. I thought I wanted the 10.1" screen but I quickly found that when holding it and trying to type it doesn't feel right because there is so much weight above your hands. Plus typing is a challenge on a larger tablet.
I will say that the processor and hardware is nice on the Viewsonic but surprisingly the display is terrible. When you think of Viewsonic I normally think of decent monitors so you would think the display is the one thing they get right. But it is only good when you are looking at it straight on. As I started using it I realized how much I want to launch an app and lay it down for a minute but still wanted to see the screen. That isn't possible with the display. Plus portrait mode is almost impossible to view.
The Tegra 2 processor and USB port for a keyboard/mouse is nice but since you can't see the screen it makes them a useless add on. Though I found that the 7" tablet is much easier to hold and type with. I like the weight distribution better on the smaller tablet and with pinch and zoom you don't really need the larger screen.
I bricked the gTab and returned it for the wifi version of the Tab and have never regretted it. There are some roms being developed for the gTab but not the wifi version of the Tab. But honestly the 2.2.1 version on the Tab is fine. I know the hardware specs aren't as good on the wifi only version of the Tab versus the 3G versions, but I have been extremely happy with the wifi only tablet. I am thinking of buying a second one since my wife keeps stealing mine.
I would say that for the money the Samsung is a better device than the gTab. If the screen was better I wouldn't say that but you will find the gTab display is almost unusable whereas the Tab has a great display and is easy to type on and use.
I'd get the $250 Tab from AT&T if the deal is still alive. 7" IPS >>> 10.1" crappy TN.
(You can flash the official Euro Gingerbread on the AT&T Tab.)

No contract, just a service plan you can cancel without ever activating.
If you like to hack and modify then the GTab. But if you want something that works, looks much better has pretty good support and is easier to hold and much lighter then the SGT. Get an SGT WiFi tab for $350 and its a much better deal than the GTab for $300. I love my SGT size and weight. I just returned an Iconia A500 because it was so uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time.
The GTab has no front facing camera right?
for me , i wouldn't compare ever 10.1 galaxy tab with honeycomb with galaxy tab 7

but serious no tablets , can compare with samsung tabs , samsung made the best to us

Yes it does. I own a Gtab. Got mine for $275. Yes Gtab specs are pretty good compared to the expensive alternatives. Yes the only downside is the viewable screen which is not as good as the transformer for example. Neverthless, its cheaper and it performs very similar. I'm running Cyanogen 7 2.3 stable on it. I'm running netflix streaming on it. Tegra games look good and no lag. It has a built in Mic as well as a USB port. No HDMI but with a help of a Dock, you can obtain it. It has a 16GB internal and i put in a 16GB external. If your budget is below $300 go for it..if you got the bux and can justify the cause, then go with the more expensive one.

[Q] Droid Bionic Lapdock Question

With the new lapdocks coming out for the Razr I was wondering if the 100 and 500 model would be compatible with the Droid Bionic.
Also, with ice cream sandwich just released I was wondering if a rom were to come out with ice cream sandcwich, would webtop still work?
Yes, the lapdock supposedly supports all of the devices that use webtop. which is awesome.
I'm assuming yes with ICS. If Moto doesn't change the /Osh partition, i'm sure it will work. Reason I say that is due to flashing over a custom rom and still keeping my modified webtop.
Hopefully Moto will leave it alone or add new functionality that we can break into.
here's what I was looking at earlier:
http://thisismynext.com/2011/10/18/motorola-lapdock-500-pro-lapdock-100-accessories-hands-on/
Thanks now I may just have to get myself a lapdock.
Just to make sure if I were to flash a rom such as cm7 the lapdock would still work?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I would have to say not without a little bit of work from the devs. Besides, we don't even have a daily driver for CM7 yet anyways.
from what i have seen, the 500 lapdock will support all webtop enabled devices but the 100 will be a RZR only model. as for webtop, will it even be needed if the phone already has a tablet OS on it. With the limitations that the ram presents I think i would rather have the tablet OS when on the lapdock over webtop

Well the phone was made to run Android, but Motorola has a sort of thing that allows them to run Webtop (which is Ubuntu) over it. I don't know too much about it...but I do know that it has a FULL Firefox browser that runs like it would on an awful netbook lol. I've seen that it may have awesome functionality, but it's very slow because of the amount of RAM needed to run Firefox now is less than the Bionic is capable of. It's a great idea, but motorola needs to develop it more and make it better (and more affordable).
And why hasn't someone hacked webtop so we can run Linux or something lol?
Well once you move the webtop to your SD, you can hack it to run gnome or other desk tops but ram is still an issue. I found another thread that techs how to make a swap partition that would help with ram but I am struggling with it. I am not a hacker by any means

I want a 500 to use on my Bionic. If the 100 and 500 both work the same and fit the razer and the 100 is said to work with bionic, then why wouldn't 500 also work with Bionic ?
I would love to be able to use ICH on my lapdock rather then ubuntu due to the lack of ram, seems after 10-15 min of browsing my phone runs out of ram and closes firefox.
Just picked up the 100. I prefer the smaller size, a 10" screen is big enough and only weights 2.2lbs. Still get 2 USB ports. Posting from it now, love it so far! Only $149.99 at best buy. Obviously looking at the box, I have a razr.

I can confirm the 500 does work with the Bionic. Bought one in the $150 VZW sale last weekend and it arrived yesterday. Screen, speakers, SD card slot, USB ports all work great. Webcam, VGA-out and Ethernet port do not work with the Bionic, but may be supported in a future Webtop update.
The Bionic fits in the tray, which is made to support different sized phones. However, there is a weird bug where Netflix and some other video apps display upside-down when using the tray. This is not just a Bionic bug as it affects the RAZR as well. The workaround is to remove the phone from the tray and just lay it flat while still plugged in, which fixes the display. Moto has confirmed this is a bug and said it will be fixed in a future patch.
As of right now you can get one of these for $50

are you happy with your 8.9

hey guys just wanted a quick survey before i take the plunge for the 8.9
currently i have the original tab and im very happy but the screen broke and figured ill upgrade it
so if you guys can just list your which model you have and pros and cons about it will be greatly appreciated
you cant get any better reveiws then from xda
thanks
one word: YES!
i got mine yesterday and its a beautifull device.
the size is just right for me and it feels and looks great.
only worry i had was that not much developement was going on for it when i was thinking of buying it but that luckily has picked up now and we have 2 nicely working ics roms and some other great custom roms+kernel
so yeah. its great. take the leap!
I like my GTab 8.9 LTE. But I'm considering dumping it due to the lack of support for it.
Pros:
Form factor is great
Screen is great
Fastest dual core tab from what I read (could be wrong)
LTE but not in my area (can't blame the tab for that)
Can be OC to 1.9 if done right
Cons:
Lack of dev support at the moment
No direct microSD support
camera pics quality is lacking but not a deal breaker
Did I mention no dev support lol
Right now I like this tab but it doesn't have anything going for it to keep me wanting to use it.
Give time for dev support

I think the LTE version is better than the wifi version, the tegra 2 chipset is very laggy compared to other dual core chipsets and I notice the Honeycomb is still buggy sometimes, specially on the web browser department.
I tried the ICS port and it runs very very fast as well as the overcome, but since I use a lot of HDMI output on my tab and neither cooked roms supports it right now I'm kind of stuck until samsung release the official ICS for the P7310.
The form factor is great, my next tablet would be around 8.9 inches of screen.
Also 16GB without expansion slot for a "gaming" tablet is NOT enough.

Yup I am orlando. I'm just in intrigued by another tab at this point. CES has me ready to jump ship to another tab. Or even the Galaxy Note.
I'm very happy with my p7310. Once I flashed the kernel by _motley on this puppy and overclocked her I became ecstatic! I found I just prefer the stock Touchwiz rom with some overclocking for added oomph.
I've had my 7310 for about a week now on sale at BB and I'm blown away. In one word...amazing.
I plan to use this as my dash head unit in my truck which is why I opted for the 8.9, as the 10" tabs out there are just a little too big for the application.
I love the fact that I can hold the tab in one hand, it is thin, sleek, light, and still gets great battery life.
A few caveats:
1. Stock touchwiz UX is pretty laggy. Out of the box on Honeycomb 3.1 I was pretty disappointed and almost took it back because the homescreen transition lag was almost unbearable. The fix? Root and overcome rom running HC 3.2. Huge props to alterbridge86. The UI is fast and snappy now. I've loaded up on some other apps like ADW and Beautiful Widgets, and am running the ICS theme, and I haven't put the tab down since.
2. You will get nickeled and dimed trying to get outputs on this thing, separate adapter for HDMI out, another if you just want to do audio out on their multimedia dock.
3. Multimedia dock disables the home button so navigating the tab while docked is a PITA.
4. Seriously, not even a micro SD to expand memory past the already skimpy 16gb? I mean it isn't a showstopper for me because I stream media OTA, but come on my Epic 4G Touch even has a micro SD slot.
5. Camera...I mean I wasn't planning to go snap happy on this device, but with a lot of other tabs running 8MP shooters the 5MP is a bit of a letdown. Again my Epic 4G Touch camera runs circles around this one.
All in all, aside from the minor complaints, you will not be disappointed with pulling the trigger here of course after flashing overcome. I can't stress making that move enough.
Hope this helps. Happy purchasing.

how do you connect to the tv? hdmi?
I'm loving my 8.9 thus far. I almost never open my laptop anymore and it feels like the perfect size. My wife has an iPad which is really nice but it just feels so heavy and huge in comparison.
I recommend upgrading the keyboard though. I really hate the stick keyboard but I'm enjoying Thumb Keyboard.
I'm happy with it and I'll be happier if Samsung can release the phone function to users.

There is the AllShare app to connect via DLNA and there is the adaptor to allow for HDMI connection.
On topic, I'm very happy with my 8.9; it's simply the perfect size and does everything that I need while allowing me to customise it; the only issue is some lag in the interface but alternative launchers are available to deal with it among other mods.
Another happy owner
Hi there,
I own a 7300 since shortly before Christmas and I am very happy with it. Screen resolution is better compared to iPad despite the smaller form factor. I use the pad mostly for flying in airplanes sparing me to cope with buckets of paper.
Cam ist not good, but I really do not need it
I am currently testing the 3.2 and ICS custom ROMs presented in here and are very happy about results

Missing WEBTOP

One of the reasons I purchased my first Motorola (RAZR) was because of lapdock and WebTop. I'm hoping that someone can bring this back either in an app or as part of a Custom ROM.
Is this possible?
I would pay for a working webtop app. I would actually keep this phone instead of the Droid Ultra.

Missing WebTop
I like the lapdock and I like the browser in WebTop because it is not the phone browser so WEB sites stay in PC mode. I have looked at Airdroid but I don't want to have a laptop with me.
I posted in this forum in hops that this feature can be added in a custom ROM or in to an app.
I wouldn't count on seeing it as I think Moto has stopped using Webtop and will not be using it on any future devices. So unless someone makes a standalone app to do what Webtop did you may be hard pressed to see it in the future.
MIssing WEB Top
I heard that about Motorola dropping WEB top that is why I posted here in hopes that there is enough interest it resurrect it as an app or in a custom ROM

Nice. Yeah I tried the atrix lapdock and did the mod where you flip the micro USB and hdmi. It works just fine (speakers, keyboard, track pad, everything) but the screen has black bars above and below that are like letterboxes. Even with the script manager you linked to still a no go.
The aforementioned screen issues do not happen with the lapdock 100 or 500. It goes full screen just fine. It basically just enlarges the display and makes it look like a tablet layout. I've seen lapdock 500s sell as low as $70 on ebay and the 100s go for as low as $40 shipped.
Why do we need webtop then you ask? If we got it ported, we would have more options for hdmi output, and it would have a dedicated layout for when it's docked. Also the black bars would no longer be an issue for those who have atrix or bionic lapdocks. Plus there's Firefox with flash, etc.
I have a brand new atrix lapdock that I modified. I also have the Motorola brand leather portfolio case. I have been very hesitant to get rid of it in hopes we get this bounty going. But with school starting again I'm afraid I might be less hesitant to buy a ld 100 or 500 if it's a great deal and list my atrix ld on ebay. Either way the whole situation is frustrating. I may just sell my phone and get the droid maxx or galaxy note 3 after they've been out for at least a month and I've been able to play with them thoroughly.
How much do you pledge Ronbo85? Hopefully we can get more folks interested. Spread the word!

The bionic one is nice because it's ports are oriented correctly. No physical mod needed. But it also has the black bar issue. So beware.
There is not a developer on board currently, if you could help with that, I'd appreciate it. I figure the more people that pledge the greater chance someone will commit to helping.

OK well let me try and get a lapdock. I am definately interested. I do need a little education here. So the lapdock is usable but has issues? The Atrix/Bionic ones have black bars due to screen resolution fit?
I was checking the 2 razr maxx's (non-HD) I have, one has JB the other has ICS and they both report webtop 3.0.0 in the settings menu. One of them has the stock rom and 2 custom roms all JB. One custom rom has webtop the other does not. I gather webtop is incorporated in the rom. Maybe the avenue is to appeal to a ROM DEV.
I appreciate your help.

[Q] Webtop adapter

bionic upgraded to JB. installed clockworkmod and did a backup and phone went capootz. (I guess that was a bad thing to do) So I had to fxz and then root with linux vm. all is great. running safestrap 3.60 and enjoying the phone.
So I ordered the Motorola Travel Adapter for Access to the Webtop Application for $9.95 (normally $30) from amazon with free shipping with an over $25 order.
I was thinking this was going to enable a desktop with a ubuntu firefox. While showing a mirror of my phone on the left side of the desktop. Instead the adapter did nothing. When I disconnected the adapter and run the hdmi cable directly it works but without the ubuntu style deskop. It actually has an mk802xx hdmi stick/tablet type desktop.
how can I tell what version of webtop works and did I waste $9.95?
thanks

Thanks for the response spunker88, I had seen some demonstrations of where there was a desktop where you could resize windows and such with webtop. I know it was discontinued but it sure looked cool. When I use the adapter in only goes into "mirror mode" when I go straight into the phone it asks me if I want to use webtop or mirror. I guess I wasted $10 bucks. sure wish I could find an upside in this. guess others should know that this adapter is not a buy if there is nothing else.... I guess webtop 3.0 correlates to android 3.x. honeycomb... So basically all these people who bought lapdocks now have a different desktop without resizeable windows because it is now in tablet mode? boy would I be pissed if I updated my phone to JB and I preferred the old desktop. I would send it back to moto for refund. after all they are the ones who updated and removed. maybe I should send back my adapter for $30 refund. lol
thanks
rob
AFAIK the Webtop version with Ubuntu was kind of slow and laggy since it was running on top of Android. Running Ubuntu on top of Android 4.x probably would have been even slower and used a bunch of flash space for storing the OS leaving you with less to use. Combine that with the fact that Motorola sold very few lapdocks since they were priced so high, I can see why they did what they did.
What were you wanting to do in Ubuntu that you can't in Android. There is Firefox for Android that is basically a port of the desktop rendering engine.
