hey guys right now im using darchstar's godspeed recovery.. but whats the most recommended recovery mode that everyone uses?
My personal favorite is Clockwork Mod Recovery. You can find the latest for our phone in the Andorid Development section, on the first page of the aospGBmod thread. Should be easy to find as it is right on top 99% of the time due to popularity.
DARCH All the way if your running GB then clockwork because I've read people have had problems with Darch's recovery with GB but if your running CM6 then stick with Darch

I got it off of darch's website but it's been down as far as I know for a little while now.. Luckily I backed it up on my dropbox when I first downloaded it
I attached it so it'll be on XDA for everyone
Download the Darchstar_ra.zip and extract it onto the root of your sdcard.
Boot up into your rom
Open up terminal emulator and enter the following:

su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/darchdroid_ra.img
reboot
2 questions will this restore previous RA nandroids and also can this do the complete wipe like clockwork?

I don't see why it would have problems restoring older nandroids, I've never had problems after updating.
And yes, you can wipe data/cache, cache, davlik-cache, battery stats, and rotation settings in the wipe menu.
I currently use ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 for recovery mode.
Specs of my Sprint HTC Hero/APA6277 are...

That issue was fixed in the newer RA versions (which includes this one and godspeed)
There was a problem wiping with the older RA after the cache location got moved in newer rom versions or something along those lines

I'm not sure what the "flash alternate recovery" does because I only tried clockwork once and flashed over the recovery using terminal
As for features I took screens of each menu on the recovery
And I don't know what kind of backups rom manager does. If they're structured like nandroids it might work You may have to create a folder named "nandroid" and inside that folder create another and throw the backups in there. It'd be structured something like this:
/sdcard/nandroid/oldbackups/*folders go here*
And worst case scenario if they don't work but you really want all of them back you can just flash clockwork back to restore them.

Darch's Recovery is an overclocked version of AmonRa with EXT4 Support. See here for more info

As long as you don't put "flash_image (BOOT or any other partition here)" you should be fine.
If you input it incorrectly it won't flash,
example: flashimage recovery /sdcard/darchdroid_ra.img
How to flash it via ADB:

flash_image recovery /sdcard/darchdroid_ra.img
reboot

followed the code lines for terminal emu and adb both times got Flash_img: not found even tried entering Darchstar_ra.img same error

Weird.. Do this for me, open up terminal emulator and type:

su
flash_image
you should get a return line saying:
Code:
usage: flash_image partition file.img
*see attached picture for example*
Make sure you're inputing it exactly the way I had it in the previous post - underscores and all. If the recovery.img name is different make sure whatever you type is exactly what the img is called.
If it's not in the /sdcard/ directory enter the correct one.
Example) /sdcard/downloads/oldrecovery.img
On my second attached picture you can see that the command worked, but since I already have that recovery flashed it aborts.

I'd just use CW for Gingerbread, RA doesn't wipe boot or system I believe.
Does anyone know if you are able to Wipe Data/cache/dalvik from adb shell?
just making a script to automate the process.

This is an Unsecure boot.img I made for Android 4.2 on the Nexus 4.
Okay cool... but what is an insecure boot.img?
An insecure boot.img allows the device to be booted with permissions to be mounted as root. This is a way of being able to push SuperSU/Superuser.apk to /system/app and the Su Binaries to /bin
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
exit

To use this you must be unlocked, not familar with unlocking a Nexus device? Easy. In fastboot mode type "fastboot oem unlock" this wipes all data on the device (virtual sd included).

Why boot? I have not tested this image as I don't have a Nexus 4 as of yet.**

sgs2ext4 doesn't work on the recovery.img and the image isn't mountable by itself in Windows.
Too lazy to reboot into Linux, for now.. any other way to crack it open?

Hell, I wouldn't trust myself to rip it out with a hex editor. I'm setting up a VM right now, but I could just upload the recovery.img for you. I pulled it out of the stock image that google uploaded today.

That's not quite how it works. These .img files we are talking about are pictures of the stock version of those paritions. Try reading this article for an explanation of Android partitioning.
There is also a great graphic here. The site is in Spanish, I haven't used Google to translate it, but the picture there is in English. Take your time with it, there's a lot of info there.
To get into Fastboot mode, do you just hold the volume down button while powering on? Never used a Nexus device before. Have been strictly on HTC up until now. I'm picking up my Nexus 4 in the morning and don't mind trying, as long as there's a way to undo anything in case something goes wrong.

So does adding the su binaries and the superuser apk give you permanent root after this then?
And exactly what binaries are needed to gain root? I've never gained root using that method before so am a little unfamiliar in this territory.

Woops, wrong thread.
Yes, if you push the su binary from a superuser flashable zip to /system/bin/ and chmod 0655, plus the superuser apk, you will have permanent root after.
Also, there is a recovery.img now, so you can test that out, if it works, flash it from fastboot, then flash a superuser zip from that recovery.

Reason I say fastboot boot first is because it allows you to boot the image without permanently (well, unless you flash another over) flashing a partition without knowing it works.
Booted fine when I ran fastboot boot boot.img, but when I actually flashed it, it's giving me a boot loop now Booting back into fastboot shows secure boot still enabled. Any suggestions? Or do you have the original bootloader image?

My device not getting into recovery. Harwarically I can get into recovery, but I can not use adb reboot recovery or any rebooting app, it just normal reboots. Need urgent help. My buttons are almost finished cant stand more pressure.

What other apps? Like some reboot app? Maybe they send the wrong argument to the bootloader. Might not be compatible with our device.
If you can get in using hardware buttons, then its mostly a problem with the other apps you are trying.
Download terminal emulator, run:
Code:
su
reboot recovery
and you're in recovery. If that doesn't work for some unknown reason, you need to switch roms.
EDIT: disregard this, per adams post below.
It doesn't work on stock rom unless you manually write recovery boot command to misc partition.

As Adam posted above, none of these apps/ commands will work if it isn't defined in the misc partition. I wasnt aware of this before Adam pointed it out, ill look into the easiest way for this to be done.

IIRC now that @GalaxyVolvoZ posted ROM Manager works, because it writes the needed command.

does not work for me
i cant enter recovery on my phone. getting this everytime reboot int recovery. tried physical keys, or rom manager, even system reset also cannot do because of this. any idea how to solve this?

Did you try to flash a recovery without unlocking bootloader?

I have run into an odd problem. My tf701 ran out of power while I was watching netflix on it. After that it got stuck on boot. When I tried to fiddle using CWM I found out that I cannot mount data or cache. Further more I get to see 5 lines of "E: can't mount /recovery/*" where * are folders within /recovery/ . I tried to format system using CWM or fastboot, they both say they succeed but when I reboot I still get my bootanimation. At this I am out of ideas as to how I can fix it. Furthermore thanks to being unlocked I lost my warranty .
Any suggestions as to how I can fix it?

Maybe I saw something like this I dont know. Did you try mounting system first and see if that fixes it? I have no idea.
EDIT: from CWM I mean. I had a situtation where some things would not mount. data being one of them.. Not sure what else. Then I just mounted /system and everything was ok. Could it be that for some reason system is not getting mounted and you not formatting it besides an empty directory.

some corruption seems to have occurred.
perform a hard reset in the 'stock' recovery (this will format /data).
then boot in and re-setup. any userdata you had will be gone (including media/content stored locally, etc.).
in case of /system corruption (after performing the above; you still cannot boot in), you can format that partition separately and re-flash it from the CWM file for the latest posted stock update.
you can find file(s) on droidbasement, as needed.

What problem do you have? /data not mounting? Format it in recovery but you will loose everything stored on your internal SD.
I finally took my tablet in for a check with asus. They said that I ahve corrupted my boot and since I replace the recovery there is no way to fix it. the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard at this point. It will cost 190$ to replace!!!!
Just as an update to the future readers. I ended up replacing my logic board inside using one that I got from ebay. My tablet now works just as new. As per advice of the Asus tech, DO NOT FLASH a new recovery. If anything goes wrong the original asus recovery is the only way to fix things.

I beg to differ....
The stock recovery can only flash firmware signed by Asus and perform some crude wipe operations.
With a custom recovery you have way more tools at hand to fix problems:
You can wipe or format partitions selectively
You can take nandroids and restore them
You can check the integrity of file systems on partitions
You can fix permissions
You can flash SuperSU, custom roms and more
Some have a build in file manager allowing you to move data off the tablet even if it doesn't boot anymore
Some have a build in terminal you can run commands from.
The list goes on...

With a custom recovery you have way more tools at hand to fix problems:
You can wipe or format partitions selectively
You can take nandroids and restore them
You can check the integrity of file systems on partitions
You can fix permissions
You can flash SuperSU, custom roms and more
Some have a build in file manager allowing you to move data off the tablet even if it doesn't boot anymore
Some have a build in terminal you can run commands from.
The list goes on...

When I talked to the tech at their center, there is apparently some special actions that only their recovery can do. These actions are those that allow changing boot table and other low level functions of the tablet which has nothing to do with the built-in memory or system files.
If I did not replace the recovery, then the repair by asus would have only cost 40$.
so ive messed with this before and have hard bricked devices doing so but those devices diddnt have custom recovery but i was able to increase the data partition size by approximately 500MB (see screenshot below) im working on a recovery zip that wll do it and seeing wherelse i can pull stuff from lol. i plan to future update it so that the system is 1GB which is about all you really need and shrink partitiojnns that have more space then they ned down to like 5MB to keep the number scheme the same
Beta 1 zip is bad i am just goinmg to make a windows bat file that will do it lol
instructions.
if you want to keep your rom and data you will need and external sd card that is big nough to hold a backup of system and data.
okay i made a bat script that **SHOULD** work i havent been able to test one part of it so if youd like to test ill attach the zip to the bottom of the post

shrinking of others. my final shrinking puts the total at 5.65GB

I tried using this and it at first didn't find adb. I moved the .bat into the tools folder, and it ran and booted to recovery. When it booted to recovery it sat there saying "waiting for device to enter recovery"

Okay. I need to refresh my bat scripting obviously XD and do you have twro installed? I should have mentioned that and if nothing else just unplug plug back in.

Um no, I have Philz-Touch installed, Is there any way to turn this into a flashable zip? I don't want to loose my CWM format backups, so if I must switch to TWR then I might pass for now.

I've tried making a flashable zip but with no success. Right now twrp is the only way this works

Or it has to be done manually (then we have repart making it EXACTLY the same, every single byte?

For D410 partition 31 is "eksst". It is 0.5mb only. What is the reason to delete it?

As I know LG software doesn't recreate partitions, so you have to do it manually.
