My G/F's mother works for B&N so I'm going to see if she can get a good discount on a new or refurbished unit but before I do I wanted to ask a few questions. I was thinking of getting the SGT 10.1 inch or the Moto Xoom in Wifi only flavors.
I basically want to know how the Nook color performs for games such as Angry Birds, Ninja Jump without OC'ing. I basically will use this tablet for Evernote, Pandora, Browsing, Facebook, XDA, Organizing Pictures, etc.
What do you guys think the life cycle of this device will be? If a newer update for HC comes out do you think that the current hardware may support possible feature adds (example: video editor that google built for HC).
I asked the rep in the store about the internal memory and he said it had 5GB internal and supports up to 32GB. I googled the specs and it says the Nook has 8GB. Which one is it?
Thanks.
NC has 8GB internal but only 5GB are free OOB. non-OC plays games great.
If you can get a discount on a refurb, what do you think you'll be paying? Maybe $150ish? Maybe a bit more? Let's put things in perspective and keep in mind that, though the NC is overdesigned and overpowered as a reader, it's not being sold as an alternative to the Galaxy or (most definitely) the Xoom.
Performance-wise, it holds up well against the Galaxy. The screen is better. It boots a heck of a lot faster. It's likely not going to fare as well against the Xoom. But it's a fraction of the price.
For the price and for the joy of tinkering and pushing the limits, the NC is, far and away, the best value you can get *now* -- it's even better if you can get a substantial discount. Just know that it will be outperformed by several other tablets in the coming months. I doubt there will be anything competitive, at this price level, any time soon.
Make the jump now. Come on in, the water's fine.
Yeah I'm not too worried about it competing against dual core and camera equipped tablets. I have an Evo 4G so I don't need to have those features. I just want to know the possibility to get HC running efficiently.
I think a refurbished unit should run me below $200 so it isn't too bad. Just wanted to know what you guys think of the dev community on this Nook being that so many others are coming out.
I was in a similar boat and dove right into the Nook. It's only been a few days and I'm happy I did it.
Xoom is $550 more since you don't want a contract. I debated on going with a larger tablet such as the iPad or a 10.1 inch android. Ultimately, I found that they were too large and heavy for real, everyday use. I like being able to use the Nook with one hand.
FYI, I'm using mine to take handwritten notes (using a stylus), reading pdfs, websurfing and the occasional game.
I'm in a similar boat and had 2 quick questions:
1) Hows video playback with your typical 700mb avi file with apps like vplayer or rockplayer? Has froyo or cm7 improved things?
2) What app were people using to take notes with a stylus and how well does it work?
Cheers
1) I haven't avi files - I've been using m4v files with 1300 video bitrate and 128 bit audio on Act 1. It's been a great success so far.
2) I've been using HandMemoWritter. It's free and other programs have problems losing data when you change orientation (genial writing and apMemo). HMW is a bit basic, but it works well.
Thanks Wile E Coyote.
I think I may pull the trigger on this. I have to check out the dev section for HC to see how far they have progressed.
The good thing is that the GPU is the same one they use in the Droid X.
Briefly tried vPlayer and Rockplayer and wasn't satisfied with performance. Stock video player plays H.264 encoded MP4's well as long as they conform to the resolution specs of the device (854 pixel width). I've setup a default profile for my Nook Color in Handbrake and my bluray rips to 854 pixel width H.264 videos are amazing on the nook.
I don't have much experience with android devices yet, have had the nook for 3 weeks now, but IMO for video playback nothing beats VLC on a jailbroken iOS device for the shear ability to drag and drop things onto the device and play them back with nearly complete disregard for the format they're in.
3 weeks ago I was still hoping for news on iPad 2, and wishing for a Motorola Xoom. Xoom pricing was leaked and I jumped ship for a Nook Color instead. No regrets, as at this price point I could easily give this thing away to my wife or son and get a better tablet down the road without worrying about the price I paid for it.
It's fun to drop bootable images to micro SD cards and try out different operating systems too. Once all the kinks are worked out for Froyo or HC i'll surely change the primary boot system on mine. Developers working on nook color mods are fantastic, huge props to them!
iPad2 is supposed to be announced on March 3, according to All Things Digital.
I feel so dirty.
Honestly I don't see the iPad 2 as being anything special. They'll most likely add a FFC and Rear camera and more ram.
The price is going to go up if they add a retina display.
the nook color rooted and such will be the casual mans tablet. For mobile use as a notepad its great. Lightweight easy to hold and use. Also for it being the size it is you can hold in two hands and type with out over-reaching(i am a big guy so YMMV but my long fingers...)
for gaming it works pretty well. I did get my copy of nova over on it and it works pretty well. but some games will not work not sure if its the screen size but some just fc
The video playback is pretty good for me. I run Slingplayer and PlayOn for Netflix/Hulu stuff and it is good enough. The CM7 build as it is today doesn't have hardware video support yet, so the Nookie Froyo (currently at 0.6.8) is a better option for video support. The stock nook 1.0.1 or 1.1 rooted also works pretty smoothly with video. So in short, Nooted or Nookie Froyo are the best daily driver options today, although I'm sure CM7 will be the next great thing when it gets to a more robust version.

well right at this very moment if you want a semi stable hack to make your nook a HC tablet i suggest you get a nook but if you want something thats 100% stable and something that will work out of the box with no hackery involved i suggest you get a moto xoom
i own a nook color and i have no regrets about buying it, and i feel it has been the best thing i bought this year but it does require some work to make it a tablet(not much but its extra work none the less)
Watched an avi of "Saving Private Ryan" on the NC and ran beautifully. Earphone to listen but all in all it ran well.

Can I ask what size and resolution the movie was formatted in, what app you were using and which ROM you're on?
Just that there are contrasting reports regarding video playback.
This is the only thing stopping me from getting one at the moment, as the Archos 101 is awesome in terms of movie playback (including live live streaming over your Wifi network from my PC).
Would love to hear people's feedback.

Where you need 1GB RAM? They are Just Numbers. Cyanogenmod requires under 100MB RAM. I bet you will never fulfill your RAM, even, if you install hundreds of apps.
I have Sense on my phone, and it is damn RAM hog. Buy still I have 157 MB in use and 358 MB free.
It Is Not Just A RAM. Almost all of your RAM could be free, and still your phone is lagging like hell.
Stop watching numbers. For example, if you use AMD's processor, with six cores. GHz are higher than Intel. And still Intel's processor wins and washes AMD with lesser cores and lower GHz.
I bet Droid 3's software is much more lighter and uses less RAM, CPU etc. than hTC's Sense.

Not to mention ddr2. The ram in the d3 is far better than any other phone.
From what I can gather about how android works, faster ram >>> more ram.
Compared to my rooted/rommed Incredible, the Droid 3 blows it out of the water speed wise. Even faster than my Xoom, which is to be expected I guess
It's not their flagship phone, Droid Bionic will be which will have 1gb ram.
512mb is enough anyway like someone else said.

1gb ram is for webtop!!!!! why dont they give us webtop and how do you guys know android 4.0 wont have webtop function?
Would anyone actually use webtop?? The last I had looked, it hadn't really taken off with the Attrix. It's a unique idea, but at somewhere around $500 last I had looked for the laptop dock (its been awhile, so I may be wrong), you can buy one of several android tablets (Asus Transformer, Acer Iconia) and have a serperate fully functional device.
Plus the fact that the Droid 3 already has a physical keyboard.
That said, I would have been happier with 1 GB of RAM (not a deal killer though). I'm more worried about future possibilites. In 2 years, this will probably be like the original Droid is now, able to run the most current version of android, but not at its best. 1 GB would have made it more future proof, but in the end its personal choice that decides.
I'm loving mine so far, just waiting to get root going so I can start doing some cleaning.

512MB means not even 200MB free RAM after boot. No problem to fill that out which means the system kicks not recently used apps out of ram.
Mine has Google Talk... Though I don't know if it does video right now. It's got a camera, so if it doesn't now, I assume it will later.

The D3 appears to be allocated better, out of box, compared to the DX2. gTablet proves 512mb works fine with a dual core and so apparently does the D3.
I wonder if some of the ram in the Bionic will be allocated to web top?
i dont think bionic will have webtop~ 'cause the ad on bestbuy only mentioned mirror mode
Mirrored mode refers to 1080p HDMI mirroring. Plug your phone into your HDTV and watch the video you recorded in all its glory.
The Motorola phones with 1GB of RAM like the Atrix and (allegedly) the Bionic are webtop machines. Half the RAM is dedicated to the phone, half to the webtop. For that reason, we can assume there will never be a webtop option for the D3. But frankly, the D3 would be the last Moto phone you'd put on a webtop. It has a great keyboard built in, so the synergy really isn't there. I hope I'm wrong and everyone gets all the tech porn that they're wishing for.

Sorry to correct you, but the Droid Bionic will only have 512MB of RAM.
Besides, I was skeptical about the D3 having only 512mb of ram, until I threw everything I could at it and it just kept on hauling a$$. The memory management of android 2.3.4 combined with the D3 hardware is very good.

bionic will have 512mb for phone.... it's a larger screen, no keyboard, and webtop support.... other than that, same damn phone.
(another 512mb for webtop, not accessible by the phone)
it's HYPE.
i'd take 384mb of DDR3 over 1gb ddr, or 512 ddr2

When it comes out you'll be proven wrong. It will have 1gb ram.
I agree on the D3, since I have tried everything to choke it. Heavy Flash sites, hi-def video, multi-tasking, 150 apps installed, N64 and PSX games, etc. Nothing (so far) has tripped the D3 up. My DX2 was a blithering mess after an hours use and MP3 audio pops happened regardless of multi-tasking or not.
Game emulators including the Quake games are far better with the keyboard, which appears to be the best ever made for a phone (FWIW, since a phone). N64 and PSX game performance is faster than the A500, gTablet, DX2, and Thrive. All Tegra 2, but different OS versions.
1GB of ram certainly would not hurt, but I am not seeing anything so far that had an issue. No lag is what seem the oddest.
It is like the DX2 and D3 were firmware developed by two different companies. People that ignoring the D3 due to 512 ram alone, are missing out.
I have looked around a few forums looking for an answer to this question but i have not been able to find a definite answer.
According to the running services page on my DROID bionic my device currently only has 684mb of RAM acessable by the android OS. I am wondering why it would be that the system memory is hovering around such a low level when my previous android phones (devour and DROID 2) had almost all memory shown in this menu. So I am curious about weather or not I either have a phone that isn't working properly or more likely it is reserved for something else such as WebTop?
All of that RAM is for apps. The rest of it are distributed various places, the OS itself, video RAM, etc.
Similar to on Windows, when you have 4GB and no apps open, Windows is still using 25-30% of your RAM. The rest of it is that 684MB you see.
I've always wondered this too. Mine is around ~680 too.
Okay thanks alot for the help, just didn't know what to think of the large amount of RAM missing from the chart.

I'm looking at buying an Android tablet around the £100 mark, and think I've narrowed it down to either a HP Touchpad from ebay (dual boot with Android), or a A1CS Android tablet like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/A1CS-FUSION...1_8?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1358246198&sr=1-8
I can't seem to find any decent comparisons for the Touchpad + Android up against dedicated Android tablets. Does anyone have any experience? Would I be better off going for the A1CS if Android is all I want, or does a rooted Touchpad + Android out perform them?
Touchpad is much better in my opinion.
Dual core CPU, double the ram (1GB is needed really), much more dev support, running Jellybean.

I agree agree completely. You'll have a unique dual boot tablet.
Ok thanks guys, sounds pretty conclusive!
I've been through 3 Android phones and another tablet, and the TouchPad with CM9 is the most stable experience I've ever had. It's shocking to see such a perfect Android experience from a device that was never intended to run it. The devs here are fantastic and so is the XDA community. And the wireless charging dock is awesome. Every time I need my tablet it's 100% charged... everyone who sees it is jealous.
1. I would like to know if our lg optimus 4x hd will ever support usb otg? Is this feature related to kernel and can be activated using software or is it more on hardware side? If its on hardware side, does our device have support for such feature? If yes USB OTG can be used in our device then when can I expect it to be implemented on ROMS?
2. Why is RAM speed on 4x hd so low?? Its lower than even devices that were released in 2009? I did an antutu benchmark and made a comparison with other devices and surprisingly ram speed is lower than that of devices much older than ours. HTC one x and Samsung s3 were released on the same year but they have so much better ram speed. So i have a doubt that it could be because of kernel or rom. Is it so? or its just that ram on our device is crap.
Sorry for too much questions but I am so curious.
1. The OTG thread was started many times, just search. We have to wait for nicely working 3.4 kernel, OR a backport of OTG for 3.1. For now there is only kholk's implementation, but it's still a bit tricky.
2. It's hard to say for me, as I didn't notice. RAM itself is good for me, I didn't have any 'better' devices in my hands atm. Probably kernel + tweaks related.
lol why ? Ram is very nice.. on pac rom with iodakv08 i have ram operations 1915 with antutu and nexux 4 has 1022. Ram speed btw nexus 4 has 959 and 4x hd 425 but nexus has 2gb ram..
About usb host: I tried to find eternity kernel for cm everywhere but on kernel thread no response and in Q/A about this kernel i am still waiting for answer of one guy which had it on his computer in downloads.
2. Android fills the RAM almost as much as it can. "Free RAM is wasted RAM" is the philosophy. Android keeps certain apps in RAM for faster repsponse and when more RAM is needed for another app, it unloads some of them to free up memory. In short, don't worry about it.

So, I found that there is no point to create a new thread just for an info, so I'll stick to this one.
Today I was browsing a HTC One X forums and I found a 3.1 kernel with 100% working (it was named as Pure OTG but anyway ) OTG support. The patches are purely for Tegra3, so maybe some devs could take a look at it?
