My friend needed some help rooting his Vivid. I thought I could help him because I've rooted other phones before but it seems to be much harder than an evo or a g2x. I don't own a Vivid so I'm not exactly sure on how to root it. He flashed wildchild's recovery using a super guide but he has s-on. I would really appreciate some help

Does the unguarded method just leave out super user and eliminate the prompts? Like the root just works without having to approve or deny every request for root access?
not so sure

I tried using that guide for a whole day plus a few others.
None of it would help me get rooted.
What finally worked was using pirateghost's pre-rooted OTA ICS ROM. After flashing with that I was done. Now I'm playing with his rum float ROMs and faux123 kernels.
Its rocknroll time now!

Anybody got any advice on how to root my inc s ? Do I need to wait for somebody cleaverer than me to come up with a guide specifically for this phone, or could I just follow one of the guides for another HTC phone ?

That actually depends on how brave are you you can test different rooting methods like Super One Click etc. but if you end up with a brick, then you are the only one responsible.
Yeh, not that brave yet, only had the phone for a day, think Ill wait a while

I just tried to root my IncS by using the unrEVOked method, but got an error message saying 'vivo not supported at this time'. Hope the guys at unrEVOked will add support soon.
Slightly OT but as as the general section is quiet (early days) would any of you lucky Incredible S owners care to take a look and offer your comments on my post / questions HERE?
Thanks and apologies for the OT post.
Edit: Forget this - I now know the answer!
what is the price you got your Incredible S?

When i had my phone for just half a day, i already tried to root it, with 2 difrent programs, did work though =(
Moved this to general
Currently there is no method of rooting, still busy with this one.
All previous exploits are out of the question, only temproot trough psneuter is useable. RageAgainstTheCage dont work.
Were (l0st.pr0phet and mainly scotty2) currently trying all we can to root this one, but HTC gives us a pretty hard time. And maybe there is no way of rooting... but that is something we will found out then.
See ya soon!
Good luck and thanks for the update.

Just an update:
First of all: tnx scotty2 for all the work you do!
Second: no root yet. Were still figuring what can be done, most of the things that worked on other devices don't work, only the temp root works until now

How to do a temp root?
Psneuter exploit. It's in superoneclick.
You don't have write permission in the system partition because of the nand-lock. Still working on that.
So currently its kinda useless, except for debugging and that kinda stuff, apps like root explorer probably won't work.
Anyone here any news or anything promising about this? I'm getting ancy.

I wouldn't expect any time soon.
Virgin is very tight lipped about it which usually means it's still a ways off.
I can't wait for the update, I am excited to see how well it works on this phone.
I'm going to guess October some time.
We should get a pool going on this one and see who wins
I'm still deciding whether to wait for the update or just put another official gingerbread/custom rom onto the phone.
Reason is, we have a way to S-OFF our phones via computer for FREE - which i've already done

I'm using a Bell incredible s. I took the s-off and originally flashed the gingerbread stock ruu. Nice to have it unbranded. I'm also using it on Rogers now. It's not hard to do. It can be overwhelming with all the info though. I'm thinking of writing a guide. Attn1 was very helpful in irc even though he didn't need to.

s-off isnt available. You dont need s-off to flash roms and kernels. You need root and your bootloader unlocked. Plenty of threads about how. look for hasoons toolkit.

This post is a little dead but I'd like to seek clarification at what exactly you can and can't do with S-on/off. It's still a little fuzzier there. Perhaps some concrete examples?

Nice, thanks for the link JoeDoe.
So s-off will be essential in playing with the radio bands, among a bunch of other stuff. Predictions on how long it takes our amazing devs to bust through s-on? (o:
The unrevoked did not give me s-off and other ideas. Thanks.

i don't think it is for the One
in time you will probably get it, but quicker and like the One S you'll get radio installers like Tecardo's and MrHydes that require no s-off. Some put the radio into System partition a way to bypass not having s-off
One S has no s-off but with these tools from the devs, no problem

Unrevoked is not for this device. It was initially developed for Evo 4g (unrEVOked). That thread was linked for clarification of ramifications of s-off. Generally you need s-off to update radios.
