I was running RumRaider until recently I relocked and used the RUU to revert to stock and then upgraded to ICS with the OTA update, which is what I'm currently using. For some reason though, every time I reboot the phone, it does the application optimization thing where it says "Android is Upgrading..." and goes through all of my apps. Any ideas why it is doing this? I have never used ICS before personally but it seems like it shouldn't have to optimize all of my applications on every boot (it takes a long time). Thanks.

i recently got my vivid, and it came with ICS and does the exact same thing. it's my first android, so i was wondering what was going on. after researching various forums, it seems like everyone gets the same "upgrading" thing too.
It's normal on stock roms
Sent from my HTC Vivid via Tapatalk
It does it on my Rum_Float ROM too. 131 to 98 apps updating every reboot.
Try to wipe your cache and Dalvik cache through recovery.
If that doesn't work, try reflashing your kernel.
Those worked for me
As far as I can tell, this is a "feature" in ICS associated with Odexed ROMs. Once a ROM has been deodexed, or you flash a doedexed ROM, you won't get the message. You will also get this message anytime dalvik cache has been cleared. So if you don't want to see this, you'll need to flash a custom, deodexed ROM.
A question I have is whether the total boot time is much different now with ICS than it was under Android 2.3.4. I seem to recall that my Vivid still took a long time to start up. It just didn't show anything other than the AT&T screen.

I am in dier (sp?) need of a new rom. I'm currently running cyanogen ..dont know what version but its the purple glass one. Lately everything is coming up as errors, my camera doesnt even work 98% of the time, and it takes about 3 minutes just to dial someone.
So question of the day: I was told by someone I consider "superior in phreaker knowledge" that I shouldnt run 2.3 on my phone. Mainly because his is *so much better than mine* but whatever.
I just need a good rom, a FAST one. I am open to suggestions. And if running 2.3 on my hero is stable and fast then I am open to it. preferably something less glitchy.
Try aosp's new gb build

I ran cyanogen 6 for a while, then Jaybobs extblue froyo build for about 6 months. I've had Aosp's gingerbread mod since Feb, and it is by far the best rom I've ever had.

+800%. The AOSP Froyo build is awesome, but there is nothing like showing off our little Heroes running Gingerbread like a dream. AOSP 2.3 is damn good.
As of the 4/21 build of AOSP, I would highly recommend it as the go-to gingerbread rom. CM7 and Gingersense are all well and good, but nothing has felt quite as snappy as this build (ymmv). It's also a smaller download than the others by a good margin. Not to mention GB includes a built in CPU governor, so you'll no longer need SetCPU. Seriously, just try it out.
ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! ive tried flashing 2.3 3 times now. ive tried re-downloading the file, tried downloading it to the phone and via sugarsync, tried wiping everything and it keeps showing "android" then goes to set up, then back to android, then back to set up. guess im going with 2.2
What all are you wiping before you flash?
followed a guide since it'd been over 6 mns since my last flash. did the factory reset, wiped cache, i think those were the only 2 options it gave me to wipe.

First, if you have the sprint radio that ends in .27, you should upgrade it to .29. Second, if you don't have clockworkmod recovery, get it because it wipes all the correct stuff. Third, go to this site and follow the step by step: http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Sprint_HTC_Hero
Definitely get ClockworkMod set as your recovery. I'm not even using the newest one and it works great. Every time I go to a new rom, I wipe the user data, cache, battery stats, and dalvik cache.
i already use rom manager and clockworkrecovery 2.3 just did NOT want to install correctly on my hero, so I went with asop (sp?) 2.2 and it worked perfectly. I love my hero once again- very fast.
Omg this Tom has been the answer to my battery nightmare. Since flashing, I can go all day without my phone dying (and I use it a LOT!)

Hi, first of all, I am new to Android devices.
I am having a problem with my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. Games and apps seems to be running slower than normal after updating to Gingerbread 2.3.5. I have rooted my phone with Odin3 v 1.85, but it's been running slow even before the root. (In fact, I rooted the phone so I could install a lagfix, but I can't find one for Captivate I897 running on 2.3.5).
Anyway, I don't see the reason for games and apps to be running slow because I've heard that the Captivate has a pretty good GPU. Also, it's not like I've overstocked my phone's storage; I only have a few apps.
I've also made a short video explaining my problem further. Just search "slow captivate" on youtube. I should be the first video: "Really Slow Samsung Galaxy S Captivate - Fix?"
I've searched everywhere for a fix, but I can't find anything, so I came here. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this, or at least reduce the lag?
Thanks in advance,
-xxTDGPainxx
I was seeing my phone work slower and slower on 2.3.6, I suspected that the developers of the apps I used were starting to develop for ICS and that maybe it was different enough that the updates were causing the apps to misbehave on older versions. I flashed to ICS just to see... and it was a great move, ICS on the captivate flies!!! I used SlimICS, I think it is the right way to go for Galaxy S phones...

First of all, lagfix isn't really used anymore. Also, I would say to get rid of those task killing apps. They don't help and only add to your problems. A lot of the symptoms you encountered are pretty common, and I was expecting something much worse. You seem to be running a different kernel that allows overclock; which is it?
If all else fails, try ICS

Hey
I tried to upgrade to ICS with Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3]. I followed a step by step tutorial using CWM to load "ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_Captivate.zip" and installation seems to go well. But after I try to reboot my phone, the AT&T logo comes up, then the "Google" logo comes up, but it just stays stuck at the Google logo forever. ICS never starts up. I've tried removing the battery and then going back into CWM and restarting the process but the same thing keeps happening. What should I do?

Yeah, I've flashed it a few times. Each time, before I install it, I clear data/factory reset, clear cache, and davlik cache, but it's still just getting stuck at the "Google" boot screen. It's weird because every time, CWM says it installs successfully. I'm starting to think that the .zip I downloaded isn't so good...
Do you know of a good, stable version of ICS I could use instead? Maybe even the same one you're using?
Thanks

Maybe I'll try it again if someone could link me to a detailed step-by-step tutorial to upgrading to ICS. I'm very new to the way android works and a lot of the tutorials are just plain confusing to me...
I ended up reverting back to GB 2.3.4.

GUIDE TO INSTALL ICS, my way at least
Hey if you're looking for a good guide to putting ICS on your captivate I can help, The first time i tried ICS i messed things up and angrily decided that i wouldn't try it again and reverted back to 2.3.5, after carefully trying ICS again i love it so much. I won't ever go back to android 2.whatever.
I used CM9 ICS and have no issues or bugs. It's possible there are other better ICS roms but i prefer this one since i know for a fact that it works great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
You'll need to download CM9 v17 and a gapps package on your SD card.
trust me, ICS is worth it, it's much better than 2.3
if you have titanium backup backup your user apps (NOT SYSTEM APPS/SYSTEM DATA)
Rom installation:
First things first always do a nandroid backup so you can go back easier, if necessary.
once thats done go to CWM recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition. once that's done install the CM9 .zip package for the rom.
IT WILL STOP HALFWAY THROUGH AND REBOOT ITSELF, as this is the new kernel being installed. while it's still rebooting pull the battery and let it turn off, reboot straight into CWM recovery.
once this happens go back to install you CM9 .zip file again. it will finish all the installation after that. once it finishes the install you should definitely install the Gapps.zip. it will load up your google apps (market, gmail, youtube, etc and your google account sync) if you don't load the Gapps you will not have very much functionality to your captivate.
once you have your google apps installed you should be ready to fly with a fast responsive captivate. Hope this helps, it took a few trial and error runs before i figured it out.
If you used titanium backup to backup your apps you can restore APPS ONLY!!! don't restore any system data/system apps!!!! it's very important that you don't do that.
that should be it. enjoy your ICS, it's much better than android 2.blah
Fastness: CM7
Sexyness: CM9
That's the answer to everything.
I have run aokp (my current) and doc's master. Both have been great!
I'm far from an Android guru but if you follow the directions, you will be ok. Both also have relatively supportive forums if you get in a jam.

I've flashed and flashed and flashed both ICS and GB roms on my bionic and I've yet to find one that works. I've had more luck with ICS roms than GB, but still I get roms that the dialer is bugged and you can't hear anyone or anything when using it. My data drops every 2 seconds on both ICS and GB roms.
I've tried Eclipse roms, everything worked fine, but I couldn't hear no one on the phone unless they called me first. So I had to get rid of that one for that reason.
I've tried every ICS rom out there, gummy works the best for me, but I get data drops every 2 seconds, bluetooth (which I use all the time) works, but if you forget to leave it on you can't hear nothing on calls. And for some reason it's started doing the same as Eclipse rom is doing, I can't hear no one on the phone not even if they call me and bluetooth is not on.
I've then tried Liberty rom, and I couldn't get data working period, the phone wouldn't work either.
Did I just get a crappy phone that just doesn't like to be flashed so many times or what?
Are you wiping data, cache & dalvik when you switch ROMs? Not doing wipes is the biggest cause of ROM malfunctions. Some ROMs just don't like it when you don't wipe. ROMs are built under the impression that they're starting out with a blank /data partition.
I ran Eclipse 2.2 for a while and everything on it worked without issue. However, Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs are a problem and will continue to be a problem for everyone. To me, it's a miracle that ICS ROMs even boot up on the Bionic. The locked bootloader means that the kernel cannot be modified except by official Motorola updates. This means that all these ICS builds are running on a Gingerbread kernel.
Yea, I'm wiping everything on each flash.
When I flashed the Eclipse rom, I wiped data, cache, dalvik and everything was fine except the call issue where I couldn't hear anything but people could call me and it'd be fine.
I've had better luck with the ICS roms than the GB roms though for some reason, minus the bluetooth/data issues.
What are you using to Flash, Bootstrap or SafeStrap? I know Eclipse has been giving me minor issues, but all and all it still works. Forget about trying Liberty or even anything else unless the Dev. modifies them to work with the 902 radios. There have been some people trying out the new radio leaks such as 904 and 905, but if they ever issue a true OTA you have to FXZ back to the 902 in order to apply the update. To touch up on some other stuff you can do also is format the internal storage. There could be something in there causing those issues to happen. Before I flash a new 902 compatible rom I go and backup everything important onto my external storage using ES file explore and then format the internal using the storage settings in the system settings.
I do the wipe data/factory reset, not sure if that gets the internal storage or not. Followed by the wipe cache, wipe dalvik.
I was using Safestrap, but FXZ'd back to stock and started using Bootstrap. Right now I'm sitting on the stock rom with bloatware frozen.

Not booting..
Not getting to boot animation... I have tried 3 times now.. Wiped everything..Format boot/storage etc... Anyone get it to work?
I was actually surprised and excited to see this update this morning but thought it would be ICS.
Long ago I rooted my phone just for gaining control and removing bloatware but ended up flashing my first rom with WildStang's Gingerbread OTA. After that I applied the "Warm" theme and been happy with that thinking there would be no more updates to this phone.
To the point - my question for you all is what do you mean by flash over? When the OTA is pushed is it just a patch or do they somehow send and entire install which removes the previous version, saves your data, installs the new version, and puts back your data? I don't have a problem with wiping and starting fresh, and it sounds like that is what everyone is recommending, I'm just trying to understand how it would even work flashing "over" my current version.
Nobody has replied to my post and I have not seen anyone report a trouble free install here so I'm gonna sit on the fence for a while
Did a full wipe and all seems to be working well
?
Just downloaded VR superwipe. I'm gonna redownload this Rom and give it another shot.

I have a question.
I am running an ICS ROM how does this affect me....
Well my QUESTION is this:
What are the procedures to installing this and can I just reflash the ICS ROM I was on before.
The only updates with this push seem to be SMS and Bluetooth, is it even worth it?
Thanks for your time guys....
I performed a data/factory reset, cleared the cache partition as well as did a dalvik wipe but after installing it gets stuck on the white Incredible screen. Any ideas? Perhaps my kernal/radio? I honestly lost track of what kernal and radio I have so I am not sure.
So what's up with this ROM, I flashed like 3 times And it boots up.....then it starts a random reboot and just bootloops continuously. Is there any fix?
EDIT: seems the OTA update was a bust check this out........

So guy - you put this out here and it seems like everyone is having problems. How about some feedback. I'm getting ready to sell this phone in two weeks and want it to be on the current version but I'm not touching this ROM until I hear it freakin works. There are always a few people with issues but I'm not hearing anyone saying "flashed it and running with no problems". Appreciate the effort to get this out there but if your gonna take the time follow through on your commitment.
problems with process com.android.phone!.
it is the only problem apart from dropping DATA on ICS bionic.
I am running LiquidSmoothBLUR and for some reason it seems to just constantly end this process.
It is stuck in a loop and my phone is unusable.
This happens after my second reboot after a new flash, every time. It works fine for a few reboots and then it just constantly crashes.
I don't know what to do.
Stock ICS OTA 2233 works fine, apart from the data problems -- I'm on ATT US.
anyone offer any help? i'm baffled. I've tried repairing permissions but it still doesn't work!

Well if the ICS leak 2233 worked fine and the problem only happens when you apply the LiquidSmoothBLUR rom then I would point at the rom you are trying to install. Something's borked in your installation or perhaps you're trying to load a program that isn't compatible with LiquidSmoothBLUR. Did you make sure to follow the instructions on installing the rom to the dot? Most roms require you to wipe your cache but if you're installing the rom directly on top of the leak without wiping cache you could run into issues. Or perhaps you're one of the few phones that isn't compatible with the new rom. Try downloading a the rom from a different source and reinstalling it.
it's weird. it happens on nearly EVERY single custom ICS rom, has happened on a leak. and yes I am flashing properly, definitely not missing any steps! wipe dalvik and cache, data, format system, then install the rom, and it is from a good source, checked the MD5 checksums, everything ads up!
another question : installing a custom ICS based on a leak ON TOP of 905 would stop me from downgrading, correct? say if i install project rectacle v2 -- a 232 based motoblur rom -- would it stop me from downgrading?
also -- safestrap is only for the leaks, correct?

I don't think that installing Reticle on top of .905 would even boot up. If it's based on a leak, such as .232, it requires a kernel from one of the leaks to run. If you want to install an ICS ROM on top of .905, you can't use one which was based on a leak. Most of the compatible ones are CM9 based and are either fairly old builds, or specifically say that they can be flashed on the non-leak versions. As for safestrap, there are versions that work with the .905 base, I'm not sure, but I think you need something lower than a 2.x build for that.
